How to Succeed
How_to_succeed_in_science1
If you are contemplating pursuing a career in the life sciences, or have already embarked on one, you need to give some thought to your career prospects. So, take a study break, grab a cup of coffee and read on. Unfortunately, I need to begin with some depressing facts. First, only a small minority of Ph.D. students will ever have opportuni-ties to become principal investigators (PI)in academic settings and direct their own independent research programmes (FIG. 1). Second, even if you are among this elite group, the odds are that you will be well down the path towards retirement by the time you receive your first research project grant (R01) (the average age is 43) from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the principal source of funding for biomedical research in the United States. Third, for your entire career as a PI, you will put inordinate efforts into writing grants. If you should ever lose funding, you will be at the mercy of your institution for your continued employment. Fourth, if you do achieve the ‘Holy Grail’ of full professorship then you will not be poor, but you will be far worse off financially than nearly all of your peers who have similar levels of talent, energy and dedication, but who chose other careers.Y our professors might tell you that this is the way it has always been, but this simply isn’t true. Twenty-five years ago the situation was much rosier. Scientists gained independ-ence a decade earlier and funding, althoughnever easy, was more reliable and accessible.Universities were more humane institutionswhere accountants had less influence overinstitutional priorities and decisions. Our cur-rent lamentable situation is fixable, and willhave to improve significantly if the UnitedStates is to maintain its position as a leader inscience and technology. A positive outcomeis not guaranteed, however, and fixing thecurrent mess will require the concerted effortsof scientists, university presidents and politi-cians to save the biomedical goose that haslaid golden eggs for US biotechnology andhealth care for the past 50 years.Science rocksBut there is good news too. Society desper-ately needs your talents. The future health, wealth and even survival of Homo sapiensdepend on a deeper understanding of thelaws and mechanisms of nature and on usingthis information to develop new technologiesand therapies. For rationally thinking peoplewith an altruistic bent, life can be no morerewarding than when practising the scientificmethod for the benefit of all of the denizensof this fragile planet. As a budding scientist, you are trained to expertly use the scientificmethod. That is, you learn how to wield thebody of techniques that are used to identifyand investigate natural phenomena by form-ulating and rigorously testing hypotheses. The origins of the scientific method dateback at least 1,000 years, and it is arguablythe most important invention of civilizedman. Armed with the scientific method, wecan explore and understand nature to thelimits of our intelligence. As a high priest of‘Scientific Methodism’, you will be equippedfor success not only in science and its alliedoccupations, but in virtually any career thatrequires rational decision making (and insome, such as politics, that ought to).More good news: for individuals witha hunger for knowledge and an insatiablecuriosity about how things work, scienceoffers a constant challenge and, best of all,the intense thrill of discovery. What canmatch being the first person who has everlived to know something new about nature? And not just the big, infrequent, paradigm-making (or breaking) discoveries, but thesmall, incremental discoveries that occuron a daily or weekly basis too. If this doesn’tgive you goosebumps and if you are not in arush to get to the laboratory in the morningto find the results of yesterday’s experiment, then you should seriously consider a non-laboratory career. Making discoveries is thecore reward for the myriad of difficulties youwill face in your scientific career (see Part II,in which I discuss making discoveries1).Although it is possible to succeed in scienceeven if you lack this passion for discovery, you will almost certainly be miserable andmake your colleagues, friends and familywretched too.Science has other perks. Contemporaryscience is one of the most communal activi-ties ever pursued by humanity, and is amongthe most international careers possible. Y ouwill probably be interacting on a daily basiswith scientists from all over the world, bothin your laboratory and over the internet.Once established in your career, you canfly to dozens of cities across the globe andbe greeted by a colleague that you eitherknow personally or through reading eachother’s publications. Y ou might even train ageneration of researchers in your laboratorywho will disperse around the globe to passthe torch of the scientific method to the nextgeneration of their nation.E S S ayHow to succeed in science:a concise guide for young biomedicalscientists. Part I: taking the plungeJonathan W. Y ewdellAbstract | Biomedical research has never been more intellectually exciting orpractically important to society. Ironically, pursuing a career as a biomedicalscientist has never been more difficult. Here I provide unvarnished advice foryoung biomedical scientists on the difficulties that lie ahead and on how to findthe right laboratories for training in the skills that you will need to succeed.Although my advice is geared towards succeeding in the United States, manyaspects apply to other countries.PerSPectIveSideally several per week, if not daily. This provides the best training and, importantly, is also the most fun. This will also develop your abilities to conceive the crucial controls that are needed to interpret the data in a meaningful way. ‘Control creativity’ is a central part of your scientific IQ; it comes only from the experience of designing and interpreting experiments. Y ou should avoid projects that are largely based on using a single technique to develop a reagent or collect data (for example, generating a transgenic mouse).Choosing a mentor. Although there is tremendous subjectivity in choosing a compatible mentor, there are a number of objective criteria (FIG. 2). Are the people in the laboratory happy and enthusiastic about their research? Have former students gone on to productive careers? Does the mentor treat students as junior colleagues and not as employees? Generally speaking, you should run from laboratories where a PI is referred to as Doctor X and not by his or her first name.Frequently, you will have to choose between a small laboratory with a new investigator versus a large laboratory witha well-established scientist. Newly minted assistant professors will not have much of a track record as mentors; you might even be the first student they train. Still, you should seriously consider joining such a laboratory if the chemistry seems right. Although this has its obvious risks, you are a much more valu-able commodity to a small laboratory, the survival of which could well depend on your personal success. Consequently, you will getmore intense mentoring and will probably be working side-by-side with the PI. The best situation is to be the first Ph.D. student of a rising star, for you will be maximally produc-tive, will generate well-developed ties to your field and will have an influential champion for years to come (although because aca-demic ‘star’ formation is an inexact science, this often takes some luck).Skills, not papers.Contrary to what you might have heard, it is not critical to havea spectacular publication record from your Ph.D. When the time comes to apply for a tenure-track job, the selection committee will focus on the productivity and promise you displayed during your postdoctoral fellowship. Furthermore, a solid Ph.D. with one good first-author paper that is based largely on your own work is all that is usually required to obtain the postdoctoral position of your dreams, particularly for citizens of the United States, who are in short supply atthis level. Y our focus as a graduate studentshould be to develop all of the skills you willneed to be an independent scientist. At some point as a graduate student youwill need to take responsibility for all aspectsof your career and develop the skills of anindependent scientist. Y ou need to developconfidence in your ability to make discover-ies and learn new techniques, so that you willnot be limited later in your career when yourfindings lead you to new and unexpectedareas (see Part II (ReF 1)). Y ou need to do thebackground reading to place your results intheir proper context and determine the nextstep in the project. Y ou need to learn how topresent a seminar in which you convey notonly the data and conclusions, but also yourdepth of knowledge and enthusiasm foryour field of research. Such public-speakingskills are critical for peer recognition ofthe impact of your research, for recruitingstudents and fellows to your laboratory, andfor effective teaching. Most importantly, youneed to learn how to write concisely andlucidly2, for without this skill, you will notbe able to raise grant money or place yourpapers in high-impact journals.Step two: postdoctoral fellowshipIn many ways the most important decisionon the PI career path is where you do yourpostdoctoral fellowship. It should be in afield in which you envisage starting yourindependent career, the success of which willbe almost entirely dependent on your abilityto attract funding. As a newly independentscientist, study sections will be loath to fundyou to embark on a project that is not a directcontinuation of your postdoctoral studies. This also means that you will need access tothe reagents you developed as a postdoctoral Figure 2 | The nine types of principal investigator. this cartoon was kindly provided by Alexander Dent, .P e r s P e c t i v e sfellow. Y ou will also need the blessings of your mentor and, optimally, your mentor should actively support your nascent career. So, in choosing your postdoctoral mentor, it is critical to determine whether a mentor enthusiastically supports, both materially and psychologically, the careers of their fledglings. This is easier to determine if the mentor is an established scientist with a pedi-gree. established scientists will also be able to offer laboratories with a greater varietyof expertise, reagents and greater financial resources, all of which will help you establish an independent line of research for you to parlay into an independent career. It is essential to visit the laboratories that interest you to gauge the productivity, independence and happiness of the students and postdoctoral fellows. It is a good idea to contact scientists who have left the laboratory to obtain their honest opinion of their experience (in laboratories headed by evil mentors, this might be the only way to ascertain their pathology, as the current lab-oratory members may be too intimidated to express negative opinions). If the laboratory won’t pay your travel expenses, then this does not augur well, as it indicates either limited financial resources or stinginess. All things being equal, it is advantageous to work at larger, wealthier institutions where there will be better access to expensive, state-of-the-art instruments and core facili-ties, greater overall intellectual ferment, more laboratories for collaboration and a better chance to impress other established scientists, who can write the crucial recom-mendation letters for getting your tenure-track application into the interview round. Sometimes, however, all things are not equal, and if the best mentor is at a smaller institution, this will do just fine. What is it going to take? Perspiration. Success in science will require a major commitment of your body and soul. As a graduate student, you should be spend-ing a minimum of 40 hours per week actually designing, performing or interpreting experi-ments. As there are many other necessary things to do during the day (for example, reading the literature, attending seminars and journal club, talking to colleagues both formally and informally, and common labo-ratory jobs), this means you will be spending 60 or more hours per week in science-associ-ated activities. The key to success and happi-ness is that most of this should not seem like work. If the laboratory is not the place you’d most like to be, then a career as a PI is prob-ably not for you. At the postdoctoral level you will have to work at least as hard, butyour most intense effort will actually begin asa tenure-track faculty member, when you areexpected to fund your research (and at leastsome of your salary too), teach undergradu-ates as well as graduate and professionalstudents, serve on committees and run yourlaboratory, which itself entails learning anentirely new set of skills (such as accounting, diplomacy and psychology). Ironically, youwill have more to learn as a fledgling profes-sor than as a postdoctoral fellow. Until youare well into your career, there will be timein your life for just one additional significantactivity (family, active social life with friends,a sport or a hobby), but probably not formuch more than that.Talent.enthusiasm and effort are necessarybut not sufficient for a successful scientificcareer. Talent is a key part of the equation, and at some point in your career (not neces-sarily as a graduate student), you will needto objectively assess your skills and potentialrelative to your peers. The inexorable weightof the scientific career pyramid squeezesout all but the most talented from gettingthe tenure-track job that will offer you thechance of establishing your own laboratory.Furthermore, the insanely competitive fund-ing situation is making the previously safetransition between tenure-track and tenuredprofessor a far dicier proposition. Scientifictalent is not a single parameter, but a com-plex mix of innate and learned skills andabilities. Deficiencies in one area can be off-set by strengths in another. Some scientistsachieve success by their experimental skillsor insights, others by their management orpolitical skills. There is no one path to suc-cess and each successful scientist has uniquecombinations of strengths (and weaknesses). If, for whatever reason, you decide thatyou are better suited for life outside the labo-ratory, there are numerous career alternatives.Neither you nor your mentor should considerthis outcome a failure. It is unfair, and evenirresponsible for mentors to expect traineesto emulate their own career paths. each men-tor has only to train a single replacement tomaintain the PI population at equilibrium.even with robust growth in NIH-fundedbiomedical research (which is unlikely in theforeseeable future), the current investigator-to-trainee ratio dictates that most trainees willpursue careers that differ fundamentally fromthose of their mentors.Networking plays a key part in provid-ing information about potential alternativecareers and in landing such jobs. Alumni ofthe laboratories and departments you haveworked in are the most proximal source ofnetworking partners. e-mail has opened agreat portal into the academic communityfor initiating contacts that can be deepenedby follow-up telephone conversations. It canbe difficult to penetrate the corporate worldby this path, but conferences provide idealcircumstances for meeting scientists out ofthe academic mainstream who can provideinsight, advice and even job opportunities. It might be possible during your post-doctoral fellowship to develop your skillsand attractiveness to potential employers bymoonlighting or volunteering in the careerpath you are contemplating.Final thoughtsSo, your cup of coffee should be finished bynow. Please don’t be discouraged, but givesome thought to your career path. If youare talented and passionate, you will have agood chance of becoming a PI; particularly inthe United States, which still provides greatopportunities for truly independent entry-level positions. If the trials and tribulations ofbeing a PI aren’t for you, there are many otherways to use your scientific training to make adecent living and a valuable contribution tosociety. Now get back to work.Jonathan W. How to succeed in a job interview
How to succeed in a job interview范文1 How to Succeed in a Job Interview?Nowadays, the interview has become indispensable in seeking a job. Its success will determine whether or not you will get the job you applied. Then how to succeed in a job interview? There are many factors involved. According to psychologists, it depends more on the first impression you leave which is half a battle: how you look, how you sound and what you say are of great importance. In the first place, how you look makes up 55% of a first impression. This includes facial expressions, body language, and eye contact, as well as clothing and general appearance. Among those, clothing is the most important to show your respect to the interviewer and to leave the interviewer a good impression in the end. In the second place, how you sound makes up 38% of the first impression. This includes how fast or slowly, loudly or softly you speak. So make sure that you sound friendly, interested, confident and happy in answering any inquires in the interview. Finally, what you say counts for only 7% of the message. Therefore, attach more importance to your appearance and expressions rather than your words. To conclude, no one can escape from the interview. Remember the above points, and you will succeed in the interview.范文2 How to Succeed in a Job Interview?Nowadays, when people want to find a job, they always have to take a job interview. After the interview both the interviewer and the interviewee can make the final decision. So a job interview has become more and more important in our society.Interview has the advantage of being the most natural situation. It is easier to build up a relationship with the interviewee, and he will feel at ease and will answer questions more fully and more naturally. In this way the interviewer is likely to find out a great deal about the interviewee. Particularly, he will be in a good position to find out whether or not he will want the interviewee to work with him. On the other hand, there are disadvantages as well. The interviewer may be so strongly affected by his own feelings that he will be unable to judge a person by a proper standard. His feelings may drive him to make the final decision. It is not necessary for us to feel bad if we have failed in an interview, because it is only a matter of choice, instead of right or wrong. If we want to succeed in a job interview, we have to remember the following factors. Firstly, we should pay more attention to our appearance. We should dress more formally, which is a kind of respect for the interviewer. Secondly, we should talk in a proper way, with good manners and confidence. Thirdly, we should try our best to show our abilities as much as possible. If we can bear those factors in mind, we are more likely to succeed.范文三:Nowadays both the interviewee and the interviewer are attaching more and more importance tojob interview. As far as the interviewers are concerned, they tend to feel it unscientific to evaluate the competence of the interviewees by just reading their written materials, such as the application forms, self-introductions, etc. A face to face interviewing is more reliable and informative. As far as the interviewees are concerned, they think that they also have the right to get to know the employer and the company in which they are going to work, e.g. what work they are going to do, how much money they can get etc. However, many interviewees fail once and again in their job interview. They want to know the secret in job interview. There are many factors that determine the success of the job interview. For example, a dean and tidy appearance will surely attract the attention of the interviewers; a graceful manner is easy to leave a good impression on your would be boss. When it comes to the job, the applicant should display a wide range of expertise and strong confidence in himself. Nevertheless, be sure not to overstate but stick to reality; show your keen enthusiastic about the job and your strong desire for obtaining the job all the way.Once you achieve what is mentioned above, the new job will be within your reach.范文四:Nowadays, in an ever tighter job market, great importance has been attached to an interview by both the employer and the applicant. The interview, so to speak, has become indispensable for getting a satisfactory job. On the one hand, the interviewer can take advantage of the occasion to learn about the candidates, such as their work experiences, education and their personalities, so as to pick out the right candidates for the company. One the other hand, the interviewee can make use of the opportunity to get to know the job he is going to take up, the credibility of the firm to which he has applied, and the working conditions as well.Essential as it is, the job interview is far from fearful. Well begun, half done. Excellent performance in it will enable the would-be employee secure the job. But how can one succeed in it?First of all, the interviewee has to pay attention to his or her appearance. Though we can never judge a person by his appearance, the first impression is always where we start. Secondly, good manners are equally important. The interviewee has to be neither too proud nor too timid. Just be courteous. Thirdly, the interviewee must demonstrate his aptitude and skills for the job and knowledge about the job-related areas; he must express himself clearly and confidently. Last but not the least, the interviewee ought to be honest about his or her personal as well as academic background, for honesty is the best policy. To sum up, the job interview is indeed important. There is no need to be nervous, however, if the interviewee has made full preparations for it and given a fairly confident and honest performance, his or her success can be ensured.范文五:When applying for a job, many people, school graduates in particular, have to have an interview with the employer before they are offered the job. Many graduates, however, do not know how to succeed in such an interview. The following are some of the rules to abide by.To succeed in an interview, the applicant should demonstrate certain personal and professional qualities. Since much of the first and lasting impression of a person is the clothes he wears, the applicant should take care to appear well but modestly dressed, avoiding the extremes of too elaborate or too casual clothes.Besides, he should pay close attention to his manner of speaking, which should be neither showy nor familiar but rather straightforward, grammatically accurate, and friendly. In addition, he should be prepared to talk knowledgeably about the requirements of the position for which he is applying in relation to his own professional experience and interests. And finally, a really impressive applicant must convey a sense of serf confidence and enthusiasm for work, a factor that att interviewer value highly. The applicant who displays these characteristics, with just a little luck, witt certainly succeed in the typical personal interview. If you can bear these rules in mind, chances are that you will succeed in a job interview.范文六:With the development of the HR market, interview is becoming more and more important in job-seeking. So it is of great importance for us to master the skills on interview. On the one hand, the interviewer can know about the candidates in the interview. On the other hand, the interviewer can get necessary information directly from the interview. We have figured out many ways to succeed in an interview. Firstly, the interviewee has to pay attention to his appearance and manners because the first impression is important. Secondly, an interviewee must demonstrate his skills for the job. Thirdly, the interviewee ought to be hones about his academic background. There is no doubt that the skills for the jib play a decisive role. That is because skills enable a person to cope well with his future work. So it is important for him to show all his abilities to the interviewer. In conclusion, a qualified candidate must give an excellent performance.。

如何在大学里取得成功英语作文120字
如何在大学里取得成功英语作文120字全文共6篇示例,供读者参考篇1How to Succeed in CollegeHi friends! Today I'm gonna tell you all about how to be a super star in college. College is where the really big kids go to learn after they finish high school. My older brother just started college last year, so I've heard a lot about it. It sounds like a lot of work, but also a ton of fun!The first important thing is to pick the right college for you. There are lots of colleges all across the country, and they're all a little bit different. Some colleges are really good at certain subjects like science or arts. Others are in big cities while some are out in the countryside. You have to decide what matters most to you - do you want a big school with lots of people or a smaller one? Do you want to be near home or far away for an adventure? My brother chose a college that was only a couple hours from our house. He said he didn't want to be too far away from Mom's cooking! The college he picked is pretty big, with over 20,000 students. That's like a small city! It has majors foranything you can imagine - business, engineering, nursing, you name it. But it's also known for having a beautiful campus with nice dorms and lots of trees and gardens. That was important to my brother since he doesn't like feeling cramped up in a city.Once you get into college, the next big key is to go to class! Yeah, I know that sounds really obvious. But my brother says it's actually pretty tempting to skip classes, especially on nice days when you just want to goof around outside. A lot of kids struggle with staying motivated when there's so much freedom and so many fun distractions. In college, the professors won't get on your case if you miss a bunch of days. They just keep on teaching whether you're there or not. So it's totally up to you to make it to every lecture and section. My brother sets about a million alarms on his phone to wake him up for his 8am classes. Otherwise he'd just snooze forever!Another major part of college life is studying hard. You can't just wing it and slack off on the homework like some kids did in high school. The classes are way harder in college, especially for majors like science, engineering, nursing and stuff. My brother spends wayyyy more time hitting the books than he ever did in high school. He lives in the library most nights, working through problem sets or writing essays until pretty late. On weekends, he meets up with friends from class to do practice problems together or quiz each other before big tests. Honestly, it sounds pretty brutal! I can't even imagine having that much homework every single day. No wonder they call it the "higher education" big leagues! But it's not ALL just endless studying, I promise! College still leaves plenty of room for fun, too. My brother is part of the outdoors adventures club, and they go hiking, rock climbing, and camping pretty often. He also joined an intramural soccer team to stay active. And obviously there are tons of parties every weekend if you're into that scene (just don't go too cray cray!).The main thing is to find that perfect balance between work and play. Study really hard during the weekdays, but then cut loose and enjoy the college experience on weekends. Get involved with some clubs that appeal to your hobbies and interests. That's where you'll make a lot of new friends who are just as passionate about photography or zombie movies or whatever as you are!Speaking of friends, that's like the best part of college in my opinion. You're finally out on your own, away from your parents' rules. You get to live with a roommate and be around peopleyour own age 24/7. My brother's roommate is from California and they've become total best buds. They're always cracking jokes and messing around together in the dorm. But your friends can also be your best study support system. You NEED to find a solid group of people to work with and lean on, especially for those brutally hard majors. My brother says there's no way he'd survive engineering without his crew to vent to and help keep each other motivated. When one person starts falling behind, the others are there to pick them back up. Teamwork makes the dream work!Okay, I could probably go on forever about college since my brother wonāt stop talking about it. But I'll wrap it up for now. The keys to success are 1) pick the right school for your interests 2) actually go to class 3) study like crazy 4) balance work with fun 5) get involved in clubs 6) make great friends. If you can master all those things, then you'll be a college pro in no time! Just don't forget to call your family every once in a while, mkay? We'll miss you!篇2How to Do Well at University by a KidUniversity is a big deal! My older cousin just started going to one and she says it's like the hugest school ever. She has to take a million classes and there are thousands of other students there too. It sounds exciting but also really hard. If I ever get to go to university some day, here's what I think I would need to do to succeed:First off, you gotta study hard. Like super duper hard. My cousin says she has to read a bajillion pages of books and articles every week for just one class! That's more than I read in an entire year of elementary school. She spends pretty much all day and all night hitting the books. I would have to be really focused and not get distracted by video games or TV shows or I'd fall behind for sure. Studying is probably the most important thing.Speaking of being focused, that's another key thing - staying on track. University has so many potential distractions. My cousin said there are always parties happening and fun events and clubs to join. That sounds awesome but if you do too much of that kind of stuff, you'll end up neglecting your schoolwork. You have to budget your time really well and plan out when you'll study, go to class, do homework, eat, sleep, etc. Otherwise, it would be really easy to just mess around all the time and fail out. Scary! You also gotta get good at managing money at university from what I hear. My parents give me a small allowance each week, but university students are basically real adults who have to pay their own rent, groceries, textbooks, and other bills. My cousin has a part-time job to cover her expenses. She said creating a budget is really important so you don't spend too much money on useless junk and run out before the end of the month. Money management sounds hard but super crucial.Another biggie is getting involved on campus beyond just academics. My cousin joined a club related to her major and says it's been an awesome way to meet people with similar interests. Getting experience through internships, volunteering, and campus activities looks really good when you graduate and apply for jobs too. You can't just lock yourself in the library all day every day or you'll miss out big time.Despite how challenging it all sounds, university also seems hella fun if you can handle it all. There's so much freedom compared to elementary school. My cousin decorates her dorm room however she wants, comes and goes as she pleases, picks her own classes, and decides her whole schedule herself. No more being stuck in one classroom all day or having a teachertelling you when to go to recess or lunch! You just have to use that independence responsibly. The social life is huuuuge in university too from what I've heard. Hanging out with friends is basically a full-time hobby. People are always grabbing food together, going to parties, taking trips, joining clubs, playing sports, or just chilling. My cousin lives in a suite with three roommates who have become some of her closest friends. She said it can occasionally cause drama, but for the most part it's an awesome experience getting to live with your besties. The friendships you make in university will last for life.So in summary, to crush it at university, you gotta: study like crazy, manage your time impeccably, budget your money carefully, take advantage of extracurriculars, enjoy your independence responsibly, and immerse yourself in the social scene. It's basically like taking on a full-time job...plus some! No wonder my parents are already saving up to pay for my tuition - it's gonna take every ounce of effort and discipline to thrive in such an intense environment. But damn, it sure sounds worth it for the invaluable experiences, friends, and education you get out of it. I can't wait until I'm old enough to go!篇3How to Succeed in CollegeHey there! Today I'm going to tell you all about how to be a totally awesome college student and get straight A's! College is like big kid school after you're done with elementary, middle, and high school. It's where you go to learn a ton of cool stuff and get ready for your future job.The first really important thing is to go to every single class! Don't ever skip or you'll miss out on learning. When you get to class, sit up front near the teacher so you can hear everything. Pay close attention and take lots of great notes on what the teacher says. Are you excited about going to college one day? College is like a big school for grown-ups, but it's way more fun and interesting than regular school. You get to study whatever you're really into, whether that's science, art, music, or even video games! However, college can also be challenging, so you'll need to work hard to become a super star student. Here are some tips to help you succeed in college:Go to Class and Pay AttentionThis one might seem obvious, but it's really important to actually go to your classes. Unlike in elementary school, nobody is going to make you attend or nag you about it. You'll have to be responsible for yourself and make sure you show up on time, every time. Once you're there, listen closely to what your professor is teaching and take good notes. The information they share will be super important for your assignments and tests, so you don't want to miss anything!Study Hard and Study SmartIn college, you'll have to study a lot more than you did in elementary school. The material will be much harder, and you'll have to spend several hours each week reviewing your notes, reading your textbooks, and doing practice problems or assignments. However, studying doesn't just mean staring atyour books for hours on end. You'll need to study smart by finding techniques that work best for you, whether that's making flashcards, joining a study group, or even recording yourself reading your notes out loud. Mix it up and find what helps the information stick in your brain!Get Involved on CampusCollege isn't just about attending classes and studying. It's also about meeting new people, trying new things, and having fun! Most colleges have tons of clubs, sports teams, and other activities you can join. This is a great way to make friends, explore your interests, and take a break from your schoolwork. Getting involved on campus can also help you develop important skills like leadership, teamwork, and time management, which will come in handy later on.Ask for Help When You Need ItEven the smartest students struggle sometimes, and that's okay! College can be really tough, and there's no shame in asking for help when you're feeling overwhelmed or confused. Your professors and teaching assistants are there to support you, so don't be afraid to visit them during their office hours or send them an email if you're having trouble understanding something. Most colleges also have tutoring centers, writing labs, and other resources to help you succeed.Take Care of YourselfWith all the studying, classes, and extracurricular activities, it can be easy to forget to take care of yourself in college. However, your physical and mental health should be a top priority. Make sure you're getting enough sleep, eating well, exercising regularly, and taking breaks when you need them. If you're feeling really stressed or overwhelmed, don't hesitate to reach out to a counselor or therapist on campus. Taking care of yourself will help you stay focused, motivated, and energized throughout your college journey.Wow, that's a lot of advice, huh? Don't worry, you don't have to remember all of it right now. Just keep these tips in mind as you get closer to college age, and you'll be well on your way to becoming a super star student! College can be challenging, but it's also an incredible opportunity to learn, grow, and have fun. With hard work, dedication, and a positive attitude, you can achieve anything you set your mind to. Good luck, future college kids!篇6How to Succeed in CollegeHi there! Today I'm going to tell you all about how to be a super success in college. College is like big kid school after you finish regular school. It's fun but can also be tricky. If you follow my advice though, you'll be an A+ student for sure!First up, you've got to go to every single class! Don't ever skip. Even if you're tired or don't feel like going, pushing through and attending is really important. The professors teach you all the critical info you need to know. If you miss too many classes, you'll get behind and struggle.Speaking of professors, be sure to be friendly with them. Raise your hand in class, answer questions, and participate. After class, stick around and chat with them. Ask questions about anything you didn't understand. Professors love students who are engaged and want to learn. If they like you, they may grade you a little higher too!Another key is taking awesome notes. Don't just write down a few words here and there. No way! You need to take detailed notes on everything important the professor says and does. Write down examples they give, definitions of terms, formulas or concepts - get it all down on paper. Then you can review your stellar notes when studying later. You'll definitely need to study a ton too. Don't leave everything until the last minute before a big test. Start reviewing your notes regularly from day one of the class. Make flashcards, re-write your notes, quiz yourself. Keep reviewing and really internalize all that knowledge. When papers or essays are assigned, don't procrastinate! Outline your ideas first, then start writing drafts early. Have a smart friend or the writing center proofread it. Edit and revise until it's absolutely perfect before handing it in. Rushing at the last second leads to sloppy work. Finally, take breaks once in a while to recharge your brain. Study non-stop and you'll burn out. Do something fun like playing frisbee, watching a movie, or grabbing pizza with friends. Just be sure to balance the fun times with plenty of hard work too!Follow this advice and college will be a piece of cake. You'll make those A's, no problem! It takes discipline and effort, but staying focused and on track will make you a shining success. Who knows, you may even become the valedictorian! Doesn't that sound awesome?Well, that's all I've got for now. Thanks for reading, and good luck rocking college! If you ever need any more tips, just let me know. Study hard!。
英语作文Howtosucceed范本五份
英语作文Howtosucceed范本五份英语作文How to succeed 1My Way To Success I firmly believe a saying:”Where there is a will, there is a way.” Therefore when it es to my way to success, there are two words in my mind: persistence and innovation. When I was a child, I was very eager to swimming. I often imagine if only I could swim when I seeing my partners who were a little older than me swimming in the pool. Then I asked them to teach me how to swim. At the beginning, I often got a mouthful of water, and several times I wanted to quit it. But I couldn’t e the expectation to swim, and I persevered. I just thought if there were any skills I didn’t master. Then I changed a way of swimming. Gradually, I got the key points of swimming and I could swim with my partners at last. The mater gave me a good lesson that something are very hard and only persisting and directly facing difficulty can we be successful. As far as I’m concerned, if we give up, there won’t be any chance to succeed. On the contrary, if we persist, maybe success is waiting us in the near future. But in some cases, if we blindly persist, we still can’t achieve success. At this time, weshould find other ways, namely, innovate. Innovation, I think, is the cornerstone of the road to success at some time.英语作文How to succeed 2Last week, my teacher told me that I got the important role in the New Year's drama. I felt so lucky. Thinking about my school time, I always treated myself as a lucky girl. When I told my friend this idea, she did not agree. She said luck couldn't be around me all the time, only my effort that made me successful. What she said is true. I am very strict to myself and keep studying very hard. When the chance es, I am already to show myself. When my teacher told us to pete for the important role, I practiced many times to fight for it. So I got the role without question.英语作文How to succeed 3There is no doubt that everyone wants to be successful, but the point is how to achieve success. In my opinion, Lincoln’s remark “give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spe nd the first four hours sharpening the axe” perfectly answers the question. That is to say, one should make preparations beforehand.First, you should persist in learning. Only in that way can you keep up with the changing society. If you give up studying whiletaking a job, you will find yourself replaced by younger people in a couple of years. Knowledge will do you a good return even as a means of subsistence. Charles Darwin has managed to squeeze one hour a day for study. But how remarkable he has been!Second, you should put what you have learned into practice.A man of words and not of deeds is like a garden full of weeds. People who act their words immediately can actually hold the opportunity and turn the possibility of success into real achievement instead of looking at success slip away just for inability of executive force.Preparation is the casting mould of success. So if you are fully prepared, success is watching eagerly to see you just around the corner.英语作文How to succeed 4som e students often say “my spoken english is poor."others say "speaking english is verst harcl for me; so no need to try." this is what we call "negative thinking." in fact, a lot of chinese students can speak good english, but they don't. their problem is a linguistic inferiority plex, in other words, they worry that they won't be able to speak as well as other people, so they feel inferior in their presence.this sickness has a cure, that is, building self-confidence to get rid of shyness.here are some suggestions for you.the first thing you can do is to speak english with good friends, with whom you can speak freely without feeling shy.then, try your ability with teachers and foreigners if possible. don't be afraid of mistakes and don't be afraid to ask questions about things you don't know, as this is the way to acquire knowledge.thirdly, try to think in english and leave out mindtranslation. not until you have done so can you be said to have a better mand of spoken english.fourthly, do more reading to expand vocabulary and learn to use the new words in your speech as much as possible.lastly, don't get angry with yourself when you e across something you cannot express in english or the words you want to use suddenly escape your memory. this is unavoidable in the learning process. just keep constant practice.for example, in cet-set, a number of candidates failed the first time and after half a year's practice, they succeeded in the second round. municate with the world.英语作文How to succeed 5When people talk about success, they will think of the reputation and great fortune naturally. Howtosucceed?Getmoresleep!演讲稿(中英文)
How to succeed? Get more sleep(阿里安娜·赫芬顿Arianna Huffington)My big idea is a very, very small idea that can unlock billions of big ideas that are at the moment dormant inside us. And my little idea that will do that is sleep. This is a room of type-A women. This is a room of sleep-deprived women. And I learned the hard way, the value of sleep. One-and-a-half years ago, my mom’s friend fainted from exhaustion. She hit her head on my desk. She broke her cheekbone, she got five stitches on her right eye. And I began the journey of rediscovering the value of sleep. And in the course of that, I studied, I search the web for that and I'm here to tell you that the way to a more productive, more inspired, more joyful life is getting enough sleep. And we women are going to lead the way in this new revolution, this new feminist issue. We are literally going to sleep our way to the top, literally.Because unfortunately for men, sleep deprivation has become a virility symbol. I was recently having a talk with a guy who bragged that he had only gotten four hours sleep the night before. And I felt like saying to him -- but I didn't say it -- I felt like saying, "You know what? If you had gotten five, this talk would have been a lot more interesting."There is now a kind of sleep deprivation one-upmanship. Especially here in Washington, if you try to make a breakfast date, and you say, "How about eight o'clock?" they're likely to tell you, "Eight o'clock is too late for me, but that's okay, I can get a game of tennis in and do a few conference calls and meet you at eight." And they think that means that they are so incredibly busy and productive, but the truth is they're not, because we, at the moment, have had brilliant leaders in business, in finance, in politics, making terrible decisions. So a high I.Q. does not mean that you're a good leader, because the essence of leadership is being able to see the iceberg before it hits the Titanic. And we've had far too many icebergs hitting our Titanics. In fact, I have a feeling that if Lehman Brothers was Lehman Brothers and Sisters, they might still be around. While all the brothers were busy just being hyper-connected 24/7, maybe a sister would have noticed the iceberg, because she would have woken up from a seven-and-a-half- or eight-hour sleep and have been able to see the big picture. So as we are facing all the multiple crises in our world at the moment, what is good for us on a personal level, what's going to bring more joy, gratitude, effectiveness in our lives and be the best for our own careers is also what is best for the world. So I urge you to shut your eyes and discover the great ideas that lie inside us, to shut your engines and discover the power of sleep. Thank you.如何成功?请多睡一会儿我的绝妙想法实际上看似微不足道但是却能够激发层出不穷的绝妙创意这些想法雪藏于酣睡时我们的大脑中。

Interviews can be scary, but if you follow my tips, you'll be feeling confident and ready to impress the interviewer!First up, you need to prepare. Don't just walk in there without knowing anything about the company or the job. That's a big no-no! Do your research and learn as much as you can about them. What do they do? What are their values? What will your role involve? Knowing this stuff shows you're really interested and have made an effort.Next, practice your answers to common interview questions. Things like "Tell me about yourself" and "What are your strengths and weaknesses?" The interviewer will definitely ask you questions like these, so have some good responses ready to go. But don't just memorize them word-for-word - that cansound really robotic. Just have a general idea of what you want to say.Now let's talk about how to make a great first impression. When you arrive, be polite and friendly to everyone, even the receptionist. Don't be chewing gum or playing on your phone. Sit up straight, make eye contact, and shake hands firmly. Easy peasy!During the interview itself, it's so important to stay positive and enthusiastic. The interviewer wants to see that you're excited about this opportunity. Use positive language, smile, and try not to say anything negative about your previous jobs or bosses. Nobody likes a grumpy guts! When you're asked questions, take a moment to gather your thoughts before responding. It's okay to pause for a few seconds - it shows you're being thoughtful and not just blurting out the first thing that comes to mind. Speak clearly and give specific examples to back up your points.I know it can be hard, but try to stay calm and confident throughout. Take some deep breaths if you're feeling nervous. The interviewer wants to see that you can handle a bit of pressure without getting all frazzled.Oh, and don't forget to prepare some smart questions to ask the interviewer at the end. This shows you're genuinely interested in learning more. Maybe ask about opportunities for growth and development or what a typical day would be like. When the interview is over, make sure you thank the interviewer for their time. You could even send a follow-up email reiterating your interest and enthusiasm. A little extra effort can go a long way!I know interviews seem super scary, but they don't have to be. Let me know how it goes.Good luck!篇2How to Succeed in an InterviewInterviews can be really scary, especially when you're just a kid. You have to dress up all fancy and talk to grown-ups you don't know about why you'd be good at a job. But don't worry, I've got some tips to help you rock your next interview!First up, you gotta prepare. That means learning all about the place you're interviewing for. What do they do there? What kind of kids do they like to hire? You can find out a lot just by checking out their website or asking your parents. Knowing this stuff shows you're really interested.Next, practice answering some common interview questions out loud. Like "Why do you want this job?" or "What are your strengths and weaknesses?" Have your parents or a friend ask you these and get comfortable explaining yourself. Don't just make stuff up though - be honest about your skills and experiences.Speaking of experiences, make sure you can share examples of times you showed qualities they're looking for, like being a team player or working hard. Maybe you helped out at a bake sale for your scout troop or got an award for perfect attendance. Little things like that can make you look really good! When it's time for the actual interview, you've got to make a great first impression. That starts with your outfit - wearsomething neat and clean, like nice pants and a button-down shirt. And don't forget to smile and make eye contact when you greet the interviewer!During the interview itself, listen carefully to each question before answering. It's okay to take a few seconds to gather your thoughts rather than just blurting out the first thing that pops into your head. Speak slowly and clearly too so they can understand you.And here's a pro tip: have a few questions ready to ask them at the end! You could ask about the daily responsibilities or what they love most about working there. Asking questions shows you're truly interested. Most importantly, be yourself! Let your awesome personality shine through. If you're feeling nervous, take some deep breaths. Just pretend you're chatting with a teacher or family friend. The interviewers will definitely be impressed if you make eye contact, speak confidently about your experiences, and ask thoughtful follow-up questions. Do all that and you'll be a shoo-in for the job!So don't stress too much. If you prepare properly, practice answering questions, and just be your amazing self, you're gonna knock that interview out of the park. Good luck!篇3How to Succeed in an InterviewHi friends! Today I want to talk to you about interviews. You might be thinking - interviews, why do I need to know about those? I'm just a kid! Well, even kids sometimes have to go through interviews. Maybe it's for getting into a cool club or a special program at school. Or maybe your parents are making you interview for a job like babysitting or mowing lawns. Whatever the reason, it's good to know how to do well in an interview. The first step is being prepared. That means knowing what the interview is for and who you are meeting with. Ask lots of questions ahead of time so you understand what it's all about. Then you can get ready with the right things. For example, if you're interviewing to be a camp counselor, you'll want to brush up on your camping knowledge. What kinds of activities do kids like at camp? What are some camp safetyrules? Thinking about those kinds of things will help you feel confident going in.You'll also want to practice answering possible interview questions out loud. Have your parents or a friend ask you sample questions so you can practice giving good responses. The more you practice, the less nervous you'll be.The next key to interview success is making a great first impression. That starts with your outfit. You don't need an expensive suit or anything, but do wear neat, clean clothes that fit well. Avoid things with logos or silly slogans. You want to look pulled together.Good hygiene is also part of a great first impression. Make sure you bathe, brush your teeth, and use deodorant (if needed) before your interview. Tidy hair is good too. You don't want to be remembered as the stinky, messy kid! When you meet your interviewer(s), shake their hand firmly and make eye contact. Sit up straight in your chair. Good posture shows confidence and respect. Smile and be ready with a friendly greeting like "It's nice to meet you!"During the actual interview, listen carefully to each question and don't interrupt. If you don't quite understand something, it'sokay to politely ask for clarification before answering. Then give clear, honest responses without rambling too much. It's smart to prepare a few questions to ask the interviewer too. Good ones show you're interested and thinking ahead. You could ask things like "What skills are most important for this position?" or "What do you enjoy most about working here?"Stay calm and positive throughout the interview, even if you're feeling nervous inside. The people interviewing you are just trying to get to know you better. It's not an interrogation! With practice, interviews become easier. At the end, maintain that great first impression by thanking the interviewer for their time. A short handwritten thank you note after is a classy touch too.So those are my tips for succeeding at interviews. Remember to be prepared, polite, friendly and interested. If you practice those things, I know you've got this! Just picture how proud your parents will be when you nail that interview. Let me know if you need any other advice!篇4How to Succeed in an InterviewHave you ever felt super nervous before an important interview? Maybe it was for getting into a cool club at school or trying out for the soccer team. Interviews can be scary, but they don't have to be! If you follow some simple tips, you can go into your next interview feeling confident and prepared. The first step is to learn as much as you can about what the interview is for. Is it to get a role in the school play? Or maybe to become a hall monitor? No matter what, you need to do your research! Read up on the responsibilities and skills required for that position.Next, practice how you will answer common interview questions out loud. If it's a job, read up on the company and what they do. Knowing this information shows you're really interested.Next, practice your answers to common interview questions. Things like "Tell me about yourself" or "What are your strengths and weaknesses?" The interviewer will probably ask you these. Have a friend or parent do a mock interview so you can practice out loud. It'll build your confidence! Now let's talk about what to wear. You want to look nice and put together, but you don't need to go overboard with a suit or anything unless they specifically say so. Nice pants or a skirt with a collared shirt is totally fine. Speak clearly and try to smile - it'll make you seem more confident and friendly. If you get stuck on a question, you can ask for clarification. The interviewer would rather you understand than just guess!Pay close attention to any questions about problem-solving skills or how you'd handle different situations. Interviewers love to ask those to see how you think on your feet. For example, if they ask how you'd resolve a conflict with a teammate, you could say something like "I would first listen to their perspective to understand where they're coming from. Then I'd calmly explain my side and look for a compromise we could both agree on."Another important thing is to have some good questions ready to ask the interviewer at the end. This shows you've thought it through and have a genuine interest. You could ask things like "What do you most enjoy about being on this team?" or "Can you tell me about the work environment here?" Just don't ask questions you could easily find the answers to online. Most of all, be yourself! The interviewer wants to get to know the real you. Don't try to be someone you're not. If you're naturally a bit shy, that's okay. Just do your best to make eye contact, speak up, and let your true personality shine through.I know interviews can be nerve-wracking, but if you follow these tips you'll be a pro in no time!
