Topics for the second oral practice for Grade 2010 Directions: Work in pairs or in groups to discuss the following topics for the second oral English class. Try to use what you have learned in both textbooks to prepare conversations, short speeches or games before class. You can use the useful expressions and phrases in textbooks as many as possible and your performances would be assessed based on your work.

1. The Media

Questions for discussion:

1) Which do you like better, radio or television? Why?

2) Do you often watch TV? What TV programs do you like watching?

Or: Do you often listen to the radio? What kind of radio programs do you listen to? What do you think of them?

3) Can you imagine a life without TV or radio? What role does

radio or TV play in your life?

4) Can you name some disadvantages of TV or radio?

5) Besides radio and television, is there any other kind of media?

2. Love and Marriage

Questions for discussion:

1) What factors do you think are important in making a

boyfriend or girlfriend?Is romantic love the most important condition for marriage? Why?

2)Some people contend that college students should not make

boyfriends or girlfriends when they study on campus; while others hold that college students should be encouraged to date on campus. What is your point of view on campus date of college students? Why?

3)Late marriage is becoming a trend in large modern cities.

What are the reasons behind it? Do advantages of late marriage outweigh disadvantages? Why?

4) Why is mixed marriage popular in such big cities as

Shanghai and Beijing? What are the possible difficulties for cross-culture marriage?

5) If you were Gail’s parents, would you accept the marriage

between Gail and Mark? Give your reasons.

6) Would you mind marrying a person from a different culture

or nation? Why or why not?

3. Advertising

1) Do you think ads are necessary or a nuisance?

2) Do you like watching or reading advertisements? Why or

why not?

3) Do ads influence you (or people in general) in buying things?

4) Why do manufacturers spend so much money on advertising?

5) Among the advertisements you have watched or read, which impressed you most? Why?
