One summer day in 1957, we headed to the courthouse for a marriage license. My husband-to-be, Steve, asked the clerk for a fishing license.1957年的夏天,我们去法院办理结婚证。

She advised him a fishing license cost $1.50 and a marriage license cost $2.50. With some thought and a smile, he chose the marriage license, and so our life together, later filled with two children, began.

Whenever we had a disagreement, I would remind my husband that he could have saved money had he chosen a fishing license, and it would have expired in a year. The extra dollar cost him 53 years of wedded bliss.

rather, they are themselves and as such do not use their energy putting on aperformance, maintaining pretence, and manipulating others. They are aware that there is a differencebetween being loving and acting loving, between being stupid and acting stupid, between being knowledgeable and acting knowledgeable.Winners do not need to hide behind a mask.Winners are not afraid to do their own thinking and to use their own knowledge. They can separate facts from opinion and don’t pretend to have all the answers. They listen to others, evaluate what they say,but come to their own conclusions.Although winners can admire and respect other people, they are not totally defined, demolished, bound, or awed by them.Winners do not play “helpless”,nor do they play the blaming game.Instead, they assume responsibility for their own lives. They do not give others a false authority over them.Winners are their own bosses and know it.A winner’s timing is right.Winners respond appropriately to the situation.Their responses are related to the message sent and preserve the significance, worth, well-being, and dignity of the people involved.Winners know that for everything there is a season and for every activity a time.Although winners can freely enjoy themselves, they can also postpone enjoyment, can discipline themselves in the present to enhance their enjoyment in the future.Winners are not afraid to go after what they want, but they do so in appropriate ways.Winners do not get their security by controlling others. They do not set themselves up to lose.A winner cares about the world and its peoples.A winner is not isolated from the general problems of society, but is concerned, compassionate, and committed to improving the quality of life.Even in the face of national and international adversity,a winner’s self-image is not one of a powerless individual.A winner works to make the world a better place.【篇三】2021年上半年大学英语四级美文It is 3 A.M..Everything on the university campus seems ghostlike in the quiet, misty darkness —everything except the computer center. Here, twenty students sit transfixed at their consoles, tapping away on the terminal keys. With eyes glued to the video screen, they tap on for hours. For the rest of the world,it might be the middle of the night, but here time does not exist. This is a world unto itself. These young computer “hackers” are pursuing a kind of compulsion,a drive so consuming it overshadows nearly every other part of their lives and forms the focal point of their existence. They are compulsive computer programmers. Some of these students have been at the console for thirty hours or more without a break for meals or sleep. Some have fallen asleep on sofas and lounge chairs in the computer center, trying to catch a few winks but loathe to get too far away from their beloved machines. Most of these students don’t have to be at the computer center in the middle of the night. They aren’t working on assignments. They are there because they want to be —they are irresistibly drawn there. And they are not alone. There are hackers at computer centers all across the country. In their extreme form, they focus on nothing else.Theyflunk out of school and lose contact with friends;they might have difficulty finding jobs, choosing instead to wander from one computer center to another. They may even forgo personal hygiene.“I remember one hacker. We literally had to carry him off his chair to feed him and put him to sleep. We really feared for his health,”says a computer science professor at puter science teachers are now more aware of the implications of this hacker phenomenon and are on the lookout for potential hackers and cases of computer addiction that are already severe. They know that the case of the hackers is not just the story of one person’s relationship with a machine. It is the story of a society’s relationship to the so-called thinking machines.。

And men guarded t and tended t, and gave up lfe and fame to ad ts growth. n the hot days of ther youth, they came to the gate of the garden and knocked, beggng to be let n, and to be counted among the gardeners. And ther young companons outsde called to them to come back, and play the man wth bow and spear, and wn sweet smles from rosy lps, and take ther part amd the feast, and dance, not stoop wth wrnkled brows, at weaklngs work. And the passers by mocked them and called shame, and others cred out to stone them. And stll they stayed there laborng, that the tree mght grow a lttle, and they ded and were forgotten. And the tree grew far and strong. The storms of gnorance passed over t, and harmed t not. The gap that has been left by the departure of ths mghty sprt wll soon enough make tself felt."Just as Darwn dscovered the law of development of organc nature, so Marx dscovered the law of development of human hstory: the smple fact, htherto concealed by an overgrowth of deology, that manknd must frst of all eat, drnk, have shelter and clothng, before t can pursue poltcs, scence, art, relgon, etc.; that therefore the producton of the mmedate materal means of subsstence and consequently the degree of economc development attaned by a gven people or durng a gven epoch form the foundaton upon whch the state nsttutons, the legal conceptons, art, and even the deas on relgon, of the people concerned have been evolved, and n the lght ofwhch they must, therefore, be explaned, nstead of vce versa, as had htherto been the case."But that s not all. Marx also dscovered the specal law of moton governng the present-day captalst mode of producton and the bourgeos socety that ths mode of producton has created. The dscovery of surplus value suddenly threw lght on the problem, n tryng to solve whch all prevous nvestgatons, of both bourgeos economsts and socalst crtcs, had been gropng n the dark."Two such dscoveres would be enough for one lfetme. 英语四级晨读美文适合朗诵的备考英语四级,晨读是我们提升英语阅读能力的很好途径,下面店铺为大家带来英语四级晨读美文,欢迎大家阅读!英语四级晨读美文篇一:University students are different. They come from different parts of the country, speak various dialects, and follow their distinctive regional customs. However, a closer look at their purposes of learning at universitywill enable us to classify them roughly into three groups:those who learn out of instinct, those who learn for a promising future, and those who learn with no definite purposes.Firstly, there are a handful of students who learn without fatigue simply because they like to learn. They read a great deal of British and American novels because they are keenly interested in literature. Others sit in front of the computer screen, working on one new program after another all day and all night because they have discovered beauty in complicated signal patterns, and dream of becoming “Bill Gates” one day.Secondly, there are job-oriented who work hard for a better career. It is arguable that the majority of university students fall into this category. After enrolling in the hottest specialty of the moment, they throw themselves into books, whether they like them or not,so as to absorb the most knowledge and to obtain all the available certificates, which may serve as a competitive edge in the cut-throat human resources market in four years’ time.Thirdly, there is a small fraction of students who learn without an aim. They take courses, finish assignments, enjoy life on campus, but lead a directionless life. They do not know what they are doing, nor what they are willing to do,nor what they will be doing after college. They are a group of “sleepers”.Studentsfrom all parts of the country gather in the same university. After four years, they part to continue their various lives. However, it is almost certain that those who learn out of instinct will be happy, those who learn with a determination will be professionally successful at least, and those who learn without an aim will end up with nothing.英语四级晨读美文篇二:in the united states, the fourth thursday in november is called thanksgiving day. on this day, americans give thanks for the blessings they have enjoyed during the year. thanksgiving is usually a family day, celebrated with big dinners and happy reunions. the first american thanksgiving was held in plymouth, massachusetts in 1621.in 17th century, a group of pilgrims left england to explore the new world. it was in september of 1620 when their ship called the “mayflower” left port with 102 men, women, and children on board.they landed in province town harbor after 65 days at sea.the pilgrims were poorly trained and poorly equipped to cope with life in the wilderness.during their first winter in the new land, they suffered tremendously.poor food, hard work, infectious diseases, and bitterly cold weather killed about half of them. by the end of this terrible first winter, only about 50 remained alive.one spring morning in 1621,an indian walked into the little village of plymouth and introduced himself in a friendly ter, he brought the indian chief, massasoit, who gave gifts to the people and offered assistance.the indians of massasoit’s tribe taught the pilgrims how to hunt, fish, and grow food.they taught the pilgrims to use fish for fertilizer in planting corn, pumpkins, and beans.because of this help from the indians, the pilgrims had a good harvest. governor william bradford was following anancient tradition when, in the fall of 1621, he issued a proclamation establishing a day of thanksgiving to god.the governor also decided to use this religious occasion to strengthen the bond of friendship between the pilgrims and their indian neighbors. so he invited chief massasoit and his braves to share the thanksgiving feast. the indians gladly accepted and sent five deer ahead.the pilgrim men went hunting and returned with turkey and other wild game.the women of plymouth prepared delicious dishes from corn, cranberries, squash and pumpkins.英语四级晨读美文篇三:i hate being a non-smoker.it is so boring! it occurred to me the other day that i really would be a lot happier if i smoked.when someone says “good morning” to me,i cannot just ignore him or her and go have a smoke.in fact, i seldom get an extra break in my workday.i cannot stop what i’m do ing to have a quick cigarette.i do not get to go outside and hang around talking to the other smokers at regular intervals on the pretense that i’m having nicotine fit.i’m not able to use nicotine as an excuse for my bad temper in the morning. if my nerves are jittery, i must have some sort of psychological problem. i cannot say it is because i have not had a cigarette. i can’t even go to the psychologist and pretend it is for “help to stop smoking.”i do not have anything to hold in my hand to calm my nerves.i do not get the satisfaction of throwing my butts down for others to clean up. no one praises me for trying to quit —because i never smoked in the first place. i do not have an excuse to buy new furniture because i accidentally make a burn mark on something. the candles on my birthday cake smoke more than i do. i don’t have to sit in the smoking section at a restaurant —and so i am always in the family section with people who have their kids along. at the theater, i do not have a reason to go out to the lobby during intermissions. i never have an excuse to get out of the house and run to the store for a package of cigarettes.yes, smokers are much happier people.if it were just not for that nagging little question about cancer, i’d smoke too.。

四级晨读英语美文(一)A Loving GentlenessDo you know what a loving gentleness is like? Have you had a taste of it or shown it to others?Surely you can get some idea of it from swallows under the eaves. They show it when they are busy flying to and fro to feed their nestlings. You can see it from the moon shedding cool light over the scorched land so that it becomes comfortable. You can also feel it when you listen to the clock ticking steadily, so considerate as not to disturb a sweet dream. Again you can find it in the heart of a young girl. She is charming because of her loving tenderness. It's also a picture of loving tenderness for a youngster playing a pampered child in his or her mother' lap. But later, the person is so much changed by fate that tenderness is gone together with values of life. Some people are born uncouth. But tossed by life's storms they become gentle and good-humored unexpectedly, like mushrooms sprouting from the root of the tree of life.True, gentleness or a tender care is often associated with love and kindness. It can also be found in a good- natured or broad-minded person. It is not fair to think that it has anything to do with weakness.Gentle as spring breeze, it cracks the frozen river with its light touch. Soft as cotton, it renders a steel ball bouncing high fromthe ground paralyzed in its embrace. Similarly, tenderhearted as friendship, it melts the toughness of an ironwilled man and reduces him to grateful tears.A loving gentleness is too subtle to describe. Though it seems invisible, inaudible and evasive to the touch, it is still perceptible. It is the quintessence of kindness, enthusiasm, love and moral support. It gives strength and power. It is the source of beauty.四级晨读英语美文(二)The Strenuous LifeA life of slothful ease, a life of that peace which springs merely from lack either of desire or of power to strive after great things, is as little worthy of a nation as an individual. We do not admire the man of timid peace. We admire the man who embodies victorious efforts, the man who never wrongs his neighbor, who is prompt to help a friend, but who has those virile qualities necessary to win in the stern strife of actual life. It is hard to fail, but it is worse never to have tried to succeed. In this life we get nothing save by effort. Freedom from effort in the present merely means that there has been effort stored up in the past. A man can be freed from the necessity of work only by the fact that he or his fathers before him have worked to good purpose. If the freedom thus purchased is used aright, and the man still does actual work, though of a different kind, whether as a writer or a general, whether in the field of politics or in the field of exploration and adventure, he shows he deserves his good fortune. But if he treats this period of freedom from the need of actual labor as a period, not of preparation, but of mere enjoyment, even though perhaps not of vicious enjoyment, he shows that heis simply a cumberer on the earth's surface; and he surely unfits himself to hold his own place with his fellows, if the need to do so should again arise. A mere life of ease is not in the end a very satisfactory life, and, above all, it is a life which ultimately unfits those who follow it for serious work in the world. As it is with the individual, so it is with the nation. It is a base untruth to say that happy is the nation that has no history. Thrice happy is the nation that has a glorious history. Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat.四级晨读英语美文(三)NatureTo speak truly, few adult persons can see nature. Most persons do not see the sun. At least they have a very superficial seeing. The sun illuminate only the eye of the man, but shines into the eye and the heart of the child. The lover of nature is he whose inward and outward senses are still truly adjusted to each other; who has retained the spirit of infancy even into the era of manhood. His intercourse with heaven and earth, becomes part of his daily food.In the presence of nature, a wild delight runs through the man, in spite of real sorrows. Nature says, he is my creature, and maugre all his impertinent griefs, he shall be glad with me. Not the sun or the summer alone, but every hour and season yields its tribute of delight; for every hour and change corresponds to and authorizes a different state of the mind, from breathless noon to grimmest midnight. Nature is a setting that fits equally well a comic and a mourning piece. In good health, the air is a cordial of incredible virtue. Crossing a bare common, in snow puddles, at twilight, under a clouded sky, without having in my thoughts any occurrence of special good fortune, I have enjoyed a perfect exhilaration. I am glad to the brink of fear. In the woods too, a man casts off his years, as the snake his slough, and at what period soever of life, is always a child, in the woods, is perpetual youth. Within these plantations of God, a decorum and sanctity reign, a perennial festival is dressed, and the guest sees not how he should tire of them in a thousand years, In the woods, we return to reason and faith. There I feel that nothing can befall me in life, no disgrace, no calamity, (leaving me my eyes) which nature cannot repair. Standing on the bare, ground, my head bathed by the blithe air, and uplifted into infinite space, all mean egotism vanishes. I become a transparent eye-ball; I am nothing; I see all; the currents of the Universal Being circulate through me; I am part or particle of Gods. In the tranquil landscape, and especially in the distant line of the horizon, man beholds somewhat as beautiful as his own nature.。

Appetite is the keenness of living; it is one of the senses that tell you that you are still curious to e某ist, that you still have an edge on your longings and want to bite into the world and tasteits multitudinous flavors and juices.

By appetite, of course, I don’t mean just the lust for food, but any condition of unsatisfied desire, any burning in the blood that proves you want more than you’ve got, and that you haven’t yet used up your life.

In recent years, to get a certificate Why does this craze appear? To begin with, it is the employment pressure that forces college students to get more certificates. With the admission expansion of colleges, a lot more graduates have to face the fierce competition in the job market. How can one make himself more competitive? More certificates at hand, maybe. Furthermore, diploma and certificates are still vital standards by which a good many employers measure a person’s ability. In order to increase the qualifications for a job, the students compel themselves to run from one exam to another. From my point of view, we should be more rational when it comes to certificates, since certificates do not necessarily prove one’s ability. Being craz y in getting certificates blindly is nothing but wasting time. To conclude, we should focus on improving our ability but not getting a certificate of no practical value. In China, there’s a saying that ^v^The landscape of Guilin tops that of any other place under heaven.^v^ In light of this, I will recommend Guilin as the first destination of my foreign friend’s trip to China.Overlooking the Li Jiang River, Guilin is located in the northeast of Guangxi. The name was derived from the cassia trees of the location. The trees line the streets of the town with yellow flowers blossoming every September, filling the air with sweet scent. Guilin is a place of breath-taking scenery. From ancient times, Guilin has been noted for its elegant landscape. It features beautiful mountains, clear rivers, grotesque rocks andmystic crags, which is a feast for the eyes. Sitting on a bamboo raft drifting down the river, visitors can see the varied shapes of the pinnacles reflected in the water. Various people have various answers. Some people think that money is the source of happiness. With money, one can buy whatever he enjoys. With money, one can do whatever he likes. So, in their minds, money can bring comfort, security, and so on. Money, as they think, is the source of happiness. But there are still a lot of others who think that money is the root of all evil. Money drives people to steal, to rob, and to break the law. A lot of people became criminals just because they were in search of money. And in the Western countries, there is nothing that can’t be bought by money. Many people lose their own lives when hunting it.I think that money is essential to life and we cannot do without money. But even though money is necessary to life, it can’t buy happiness. Happiness is not something that can be measured by money. It is a state of mind. One can have plenty of money, with which he can buy whatever he wants, and at the same time he is not happy because he is never satisfied orhe is troubled by various kinds of problems. Therefore, although money is necessary for a happy life, it can’t buy happiness. English has been getting more and more popular in the last decade. Many countries have made English taught as the second language in schools. But why do students need English? If they do need, what do they need it for?Different students learn English for different purposes. Most of the students learn English because they need to read English textbooks or journals and attend English lectures, while a few students use it to talk to English-speaking visitors, attend seminars, or write letters and reports.?Whatever the purposes are, one thing is certain: Students need English, and English teaching should be strengthened in universities. However, the current teaching methods should be improved and the teaching materials should be updated to satisfy their needs. As we all know, the situation of employment graduate is urgent nowadays. Employment becomes a major social issue in our country. More and more people pay great attention to it.This issue result from two aspects. First many undergraduates are finding jobs. They hope to get a job with high salary and other pensions. So the government and the society face great pressure. More job opportunities are needed to create for them.On the other hand, there are many vacancies of jobs in the west. So there comes an imbalance between the supply and demand in the east and the west. Few people want to seek jobs in the west. They prefer to live in the major cities, such as Beijing , shanghai and other developped areas. To solve this issue, it is a better choice to encourage people to seek jobs in the west. This also help to develop local economy and offer a brandew chance for graduates. Charity is of utmost importance to us humans. While following a spate of scandals, some individuals and institutions involved in this field have encountered criticism in recent months. There are several reasons for this phenomenon. Above all, compared with those of developed countries, the charity awareness in our country is backward. Some people equal charity with donation, and therefore they believe that charity is the rich’s responsibility and has nothing to do with the middle-class and the poor. The second thing that must be taken into consideration is that a number of individuals and charitable organizations lack a sense of social responsibility, which results in the declining social credibility. For my part, I believe the following steps can address this situation. Firstly, people’s awareness of how profound influence charity can bring to our society should be heightened. Secondly, rigorous supervision must be carried out by the administrations involved, so that the charity activities will become more transparent. Dormitory life is an indispensable part of college life. But sometimes the harmony in the dormitory is disturbed in one way or another. As is known to all, a harmonious dormitory life is important to college students and benefits all the members. On the one hand, we can have a good rest and put our heart into study. On the other hand, we will have a good mood and enjoy being together. There are several ways to create and maintain a harmonious dormitory life. Firstly, you have to evaluate your life-style and try to get rid of your dirty habits, if there are any. Secondly, when an annoying situation arises, you’ll just have to learn to tolerate each other and co-exist. If he comes to our country, I shall take him to the Great Wall first. There exist three reasons for my decision. To begin with, the Great Wall symbolizes China ancient history. The Wall built from the 5th century BC until the beginning of the 17th century, experiencing our countrys various dynasties.Whats more, it embodies our primary principle: teamwork is everything. Obviously, it was rather difficult to build such a wall in the ancient days without any modern machines, because all the work had to be done only by hand. But millions of China people came together and made it a reality. Finally, the Great Wall expresses our determination to resist invasion. The Wall was originally a project of Qin dynasty designed to keep out the invaders. Although millions of people died for building the Wall, China people defended our own sovereignty.I believe that Mike will satisfy with my arrangement. Many young people in China today prefer Western holidays to traditional Chinese festivals. Christmas is now celebrated by the younger generation all over China, and it has become especially popular as a romantic holiday for boyfriends and girlfriends or young married couples. Valentine\'s Day is also extremely popular, and even Halloween is being celebrated now. This phenomenon has actually developed quite naturally in recent decades due to our educational system\'s focus on English study and therefore on English-speaking cultures. To many students, Western culture has become a symbol of self-expression and freedom from restraint. Celebrating Western holidays has become a way for students to express their love ofsomething different from traditional Chinese culture, and to have fun together with their own generation. In my opinion, it\'s fine for students learning English and studying English-speaking cultures to celebrate Western holidays with their teachers and classmates. However, the way I see it, unless the young people later go abroad to live in those cultures, there is no reason for them to continue to celebrate them. We Chinese should hold on to our traditional festivals, the festivals which we have celebrated for centuries. With the popularity of the Internet, network columns in which celebrities such as pop stars, atheles show off their wealth become prevalent.Opinions on this issue differ from person to person. An army of people, especially youngsters today are fond of these activities. Not only can they know about the latest information of these celebrities but also they can get their shopping desires stimulated by copying what the rich do. On the contrary, a number of people hold the negative attitude towards this phenomenon. They maintain that the show-off may mislead the public’s value of consumption that erode people’s outlook on life. For my part, despite the continuous improvement of people’s living standard, in China where the gap between the rich and the poor is increasingly widening, the rich should play at least a small role in helping those in povertity instead of flaunting their wealth.英语四级作文范文阅读第11篇^v^A new industry developed new stars of dress. But you know there is a kind of reaction against the suit, isn\'t there?^v^^v^Yeah, I think when we see the 1960s, we see a move towards casualisation. And you\'re quite right in more formal industries like the law, like banking, people still wear the formal suit. But Silicon Valley, media people like yourself indeed wear open-necked shirts. But even in those areas now with the current difficulty with job market, you find it actually people are dressing flauntily more smartly. They are being a little more cautious. And when you look at the sort of best-dressed man in Britain today, guess what, he is backing a suit.^v^英语四级作文范文阅读第12篇Fast food is becoming more popular in China, especially among children and teenagers. Today、it’s certainly difficult to think of any other single thing that mirrors the fast pace of modern society as powerfully as fast food. There are several reasons for its popularity. First, it is very convenient and saves a lot of time. The trends of modern society seem to all point to one ultimate goal — saving time, and fast food well serves this purpose. Second, its popularity is also attributed to the clean andcomfortable environment of fast food restaurants, the excellent service, and the guaranteed quality of food. However From the nutritional point of view. It usually does not compose a balanced diet and doctors suggest that people, especially children, eat fast food as little as possible. Therefore, fast food is only a good choice when you are in a hurry and turn to it once in a while. Many students have enjoyed great pleasure and satisfaction from these games. But as we see, some students lacking self-discipline are too much indulged in these games so that their health and academic performances are affected. This phenomenon has caused much worry from the teachers and parents. However, some others argue that online games are not always harmful. They can train the ability of youngsters to respond to things quickly. Moreover, they can stimulate their imagination and their interest in computer science. More importantly, it does bring college students much pleasure and release their pressure greatly. From my point of view, online games are a wonderful entertainment if you play them in a clever way. When they interfere too much with your study, it is better for you to give them up at once. But if you have enough self-control over them, you can certainly obtain real pleasure and benefit a lot from them. With the modernization of the world, people’s standard of living has improved a lot. Only doing so can we keep us healthy. From the chart above, we can definitely get a conclusion that the more you learned, the higher your salary would be. The figures in the chart denied the claim that knowledge is useless. However quite a few people still hold the opinion that a higher education does no good to a better job since that there are many university students who can not get an ideal job. What I want to point out is that there is more than one factor that contributes to the failure of finding an ideal job for those who got a higher education. While those who failed to get a better education will hardly succeed in getting a good job because they didn’t get the knowledge systematically and scientifically. As the proverb goes like this, Knowledge is power. Education pays, sooner or later. The rise of mobile phones has been blamed for a number of social ills, but your smart phone may also be making you physically sick as well.Scientists have identified a condition called “cybersickness”, which they say is the digital version of motion sickness. The phenomenon, which affects up to 80 percent of the population who own smartphones or tablets, leads to feelings of nausea and unsteadiness. It is caused by seeing fast motion on a screen and covers anything from a car chase in a film to scrolling through web pages on your phone. The more realistic the visual content is, the higher your chances of getting cybersickness. The condition was identified in a piece in the New York Times in which British and US experts said that it needed addressing.Cyriel Diels, a cognitive psychologist and human factors researcher at Coventry University’s centre for Mobility and Transport, said: “It’s a fundamental problem that’s kind o f been swept under the carpet in the tech industry. It’s a natural response to an unnatural environment.Motion sickness leaves sufferers feeling ill because they feel movement in your muscles and your inner ear but do not see it.The mismatch in digital sickness is the opposite—you see movement on the screen but do not feel it.The effect is the same and the symptoms include a headache, wanting to throw up, confusion and the need to sit down.Often cybersickness manifests itself in a subtle way and sufferers put it down to stress or eyestrain.Steven Rauch, a professor of otolaryngology at Harvard Medical School, said: “Your sense of balance is different than other senses in that it has lots of inputs. When those inputs don’t agree, that’s when you feel dizziness and nausea “Some studies that have been carried out into cybersickness found that women are more susceptible than men, the New York Times reported. Those who have Type A’ personalities—meaning they are confident and assertive—are more likely to suffer from cybersickness as well.Among those who have reported experiencing the condition have been video gamers who spend hours playing fast paced games.Cinema-goers have struggled with some scenes in action movies which have quick cuts and fast editing—and virtual reality has made the problem even worse.Jonathan Weinstein, a professor at the Kanbar Institute for Film and Television at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, said: “The idea is to get audiences to feel like participants in the action rather than outside observers of the action.Engineers at Oculus VR, the virtual headset manufacturer, have admitted that digital motion sickness is one of their biggest problems.英语四级作文范文阅读第17篇Nowadays more and more parents are eager to send their children to study abroad before they finish high school by whatever means and at whatever is quite understandable for parents to send their children to study overseas because they place high expectations on their children. They are encouraged by the success stories of those who have completed their overseas study. With the development of economy, companies and institutions at home are giving more and more emphasis on overseas experiences, too. Consequently, pursuing overseas study became a kind of short cut in gaining a better future. Moreover, there is still one underlying reason for this rush-economic reason. The rapid economic progress in the past few years in China has enabled more and more parents to afford the huge cost for their children’s overseas for m e, overseas study is surely a helpful way to get both advanced knowledge and necessary experiences, but overseas study at an early age is neither necessary nor benef1cial. The students may be too young to either tend for themselves or think for themselves. I do think that overseas study can contribute to one’s self-improvement, but it’s better to be pursued after one has finished his college study at home, when he is more capable of learning and living on his own.英语四级作文范文阅读第18篇Recent years have seen a tendency in China that tourism is growing faster. According to a recent survey made by some experts, about 47% urban residents travel regularly, and 28% rural residents also make their tour across the country. The survey also shows that more people are interested in tourism, and will join the army in the future. Facing this tendency, we can’t help exploring some underlying factors that are responsible. In the very first place, with the policy of reform and opening up, Chinese people’s living standard has been greatly improved, and therefore, most of them can afford to travel around. What’s more, it is believed that people now take a more positive attitude to tourism, and regard it as a life style. In addition, tourism facilities are becoming better and better. For example, transportation develops fast, and many scenic spots are available now.Though there are still some problems with tourism, I personally believe that tourism should be playing a key role in our life. I also hope that our government will make policies to create a better environment for tourists.英语四级作文范文阅读第19篇It is reported by the World Luxury Association that by 2012 China will have been expected to be the biggest trade and consumer center of luxury goods. And this provokes a heated discussion. There are many factors that have stimulated this great change of consumption value. First of all, the rising of living standard enables people to afford the luxury goods. Secondly, owing to the high quality and famous designer, consumers prefer luxuries as long as the goods meet their needs in terms of aesthetics or collection value. Last but not least, it is vanity that derives more and more people to buy luxury goods. Consumers prefer so much to imitate their idols like pop stars that they just blindly pursue the trend and label themselves as rich. As a college student, I am supposed to buy what I can afford. I’ll take the factors like style , quality and design into consideration, regardless of whatever the brand is.英语四级作文范文阅读第20篇It has been said that when people succeed,it is because of hard work and that luck has nothing to do with I believe that hard work is very important and is the surest way to success for most people,I must disagree with this cannot be denied that luck often plays an important role in example, many important discoveries have been made by have been many cases of researchers and inventors making major breakthroughs while they were actually trying to solve another problem or create a different device.Furthermore, there is something to be said for simply being in the right place at the right time-perhaps meeting someone by chance who can offer a good job or rare of course, there are the rare examples of gamblers and lottery winners who beat the odds and achieve sudden and unexpected success. While the influence of luck cannot be ignored, this is not to say that one should depend on it and ignore the value of hard one is willing to work hard,I believe that success will eventually be achieved, with or without the added benefit of work is often an essential ingredient of luck because it enables one to take advantage of a lucky the scientist has not worked hard to develop his knowledge and skills,he may not recognize that lucky breakthrough when it comes suggestion is not to count on luck to bring you hard and keep your eyes open for that lucky opportunity.英语四级作文范文阅读第21篇last week, li ning and i studied in classroom. suddenly, lining said to me that he had a headache .i asked he to see doctor. he said it was not bad. after 5 miniuts, lining sai to me his headache very serious. so i helped him go to hosptialalthought there was sars around us, but i felt very rm from this thing. it told me that the love from true heart can help come across any difficult. we are so lucky that we live in a big warmth family. and not very long, my classmate was getting healthy and could come to school again. how happy we were!英语四级作文范文阅读第22篇Do you need books? Some have been teachers all their lives. Some devote their life energy to scientific research. Such people love their work and turn out to be specialists in their own field. They are usually high achievers. Some are different. They are in the habit of job-hopping, for they always pursue what is new and stimulating. They never seem content with their present situation. Some like to meet more people, make more money and new acquaintances, so they hop from job to job.As far as I am concerned, I want to be professionally strong. I am not in favor of frequent job hopping, as the saying goes Jack of all trades, master of none. But I want to have opportunities for advancement and as many colleagues as possible to cooperate and communicate with so as to be more creative and less partial.英语四级作文范文阅读第24篇The urban traffic is getting increasingly crowded nowadays in China. The roads are pakced with cars, bicylces and pedestrians and traffic jams, bus delays and traffic accidents are a common scene. Then how to solve this problem? Some suggest to lay down more roads to make the traffic less crowded and speed up the flow of traffic. Others believe that we should open up more public bus routes, so that more people will take the public buses instead of travelling by cars and bicycles.Though above two views sound reasonable, they have their own drawbacks. The fomer may take up much land which could be used for farms and houses. The latter may cause inconvenience for those who are used to travelling by car or bicycles. I think the best answerto the traffic problem is a combination of the two. More roads can be built to hold more traffic and meanwhile more public bus routes can be opened up to those who prefer to use the public transportation.英语四级作文范文阅读第25篇Smoe people say that money is the best thing in the world. But I consider reading books as the best and the most precious thing one can ever have.Reading books is very important. People\'s opinions differ sharply on this issue. Some hold the positive view. They say that it is a natural thing for one to get rewarded after he has made contributions to the society, especially in an age of market economy. Otherwise, people would be discouraged from helping others.Others, however, hold the opposite view. They maintain that one should learn from Lei Feng and expect no reward when helping others. Anyway, everything is not a commodity. The whole society would be in danger if we all calculated conscience and affection in terms of money. Anyway, as the saying goes, it is love, instead of money, that turns the world around. Personally, I believe that we should not go to extremes. On the one hand, we should recognize and reward in time people who have done a good deed or good deeds; on the other hand, we should keep it in mind that we do not help others for money, but out of love and responsibility. Only in this way can we achieve a really harmonious society.英语四级作文范文阅读第27篇There is an undeniable fact that the number of animals is declining faster than ever before. According to a recent survey made by some experts, about 37 species disappear from our earth every year. It is obvious that the problem has become a serious one worth our concern. When we explore this problem, some underlying factors emerge. In the very first place, human beings have played a big part. With the fast development of human society, the environment is much destroyed, and animals lose their home. Accordingly, some species become extinct. What’s more, people hunt animals for food and skin. A good case in point is that the Japanese have killed a lot of whales because they like to eat the meat. In addition, human beings are largely responsible for the pollution of natural environment, and poison animals in many ways. The current problem, I believe, should be solved immediately. First of all, our government should play a key role in making relevant rules and protecting animals. The general public should also be educated to value the existence of these animals on our planet.英语四级作文范文阅读第28篇omen are playing an increasingly important part in society today. more and more women go to work to earn money instead of keeping the house or looking after the children. women have entered many fields of society including scientific field. as we know, many women sports teams have won the world’s champions such as chinese women’s volleyball team.ith the changes in their social role, women’s position in the family has been improved as well. husbands are not the masters of wives in many places. husbands and wives are equal now. they join together to overcome difficulties and share happiness.豹眎n spite of these changes, the liberation of women has not been completely realized. also in some places. women are considered being “thing” belong to men. they have little chance to find jobs. they don’t get equal pay for equal job. this is a problem must be solved not only by society but also by women themselves.英语四级作文范文阅读第29篇Students mental health has been playing an increasingly important role in our day-to-day life. Indeed, it is widely accepted that it has gained growing popularity among persons in all walks of life. There is a general discussion today about the issue of disorder in brains. Obviously, it is necessary that effective actions should be taken to prevent problems. Authorities in universities play a critical role in the situation. To begin with, schools, such as colleges or universities, can provide chances for the young men to ease their attention. Whats more, some are physically strong, but psychological problems are able to bring potential threats. Teaches may have a chance to find them in advance. Besides, specialists in this field are to be required to make full preparation for cases in time. There are a flock of sheep are grazing in the distance. We came to a small pavilion on the edge of fish ponds, out of the basket caught a fish food to feed the fish, but half a day in the past,no fish to eat.Today is happy, also learned a lot of knowledge!英语四级美文短篇篇3Much to our distress, these years have seen a widespread neglect of patriotic education in our society.According to some official reports, many patriotic education centers have been closed down or kept open to the public for other more profitable purposes while many of our national heroes have given way to today's pop stars in youths' minds. If this current is allowed to run its course,I am afraid, things are bound to turn for the worse, with less and less sense of patriotism left in the youth. The significance of patriotic education to our society, however, can be seen from the perspectives as follows. In the first place, the patriotic education can make youth more aware of the glorious history and culture of our nation, thus building up their sense of pride as Chinese. In the second, the patriotic education helps youth value today's hard-earned life so as to hold dearer their golden chances of enriching themselves with knowledge in peace. And above all,the patriotic education can push youth to draw upon more of their capabilities in order to make tomorrow's life better than today's and leave behind themselves more highlights for the nation's culture. To sum up,patriotic education is a key ingredient in the all-round development of youth. So the most pressing for us now is how to effectively inculcate patriotism in the youth of today. In my opinion, the first step should be focused upon giving fuller play to the potentialsof patriotic education centers instead of running them for the purpose of making money. Then, greater efforts must be made to integrate the patriotic education into the curriculums throughout youth's education. In one word, where there is an effective patriotic education of youth, there is a greater enhancement of national cohesiveness. It is the duty of every citizen to make the country rich and powerful (To make the country rich and strong is...).In order to accomplish this object one must be patriotic (love his country).I consider this an unchangeable truth. How can a student love his country (be patriotic)? I find my answer very simple and clear. He must study hard and store up knowledge so as to serve his (the) country in the future. If every student can do according to what I said, the country will certainly be rich and powerful英语四级美文短篇篇4ino-Japan problem is always a sensitive topic,a fuse which can trigger a serial of explosion. Some so-called patriots argue that buying domestic products is patriotism and proclaim that in particular all the Chinese should reject goods marked "made in Japan”。

Feeling of YouthNo young man believes he shall ever die. It was a saying of my brother's, and a fine one. There is a feeling of Eternity in youth, which makes us amend for everything. To be young is to be as one of the Immortal Gods. One half of time indeed is flown-the other half remains in store for us with all its countless treasures; for there is no line drawn, and we see no limit to our hopes and wishes. We make the coming age our own-The vast, the unbounded prospect lies before us.Death. old age. are words without a meaning. that pass by us like the idea air which we regard not. Others may have undergone, or may still be liable to them-we "bear a charmed life“, which laughs to scorn all such sickly fancies. As in setting out on delightful journey, we strain our eager gaze forward- Bidding the lovely scenes at distance hail! And see no end to the landscape, new objects presenting themselves as we advance; so, in the commencement of life, we set no bounds to our inclinations. nor to the unrestricted opportunities of gratifying them. we have as yet found no obstacle, no disposition to flag; and it seems that we can go on so forever. We look round in a new world, full of life, and motion, and ceaseless progress; and feel in ourselves all the vigor and spirit to keep pace with it, and do not foresee from any present symptoms how we shall be left behind in the natural course of things, decline into old age, and drop into the grave. It is the simplicity, and as it were abstractedness of our feelings in youth, that (so to speak)identifies us with nature, and (ourexperience being slight and our passions strong)deludes us into a belief of being immortal like it. Our short-lives connection with existence we fondly flatter ourselves, is an indissoluble and lasting union-a honeymoon that knows neither coldness, jar, nor separation. As infants smile and sleep, we are rocked in the cradle of our wayward fancies, and lulled into security by the roar of the universe around us0we quaff the cup of life with eager haste without draining it, instead of which it only overflows the more-objects press around us, filling the mind with their magnitude and with the strong of desires that wait upon them, so that we have no room for the thoughts of death.我的职业.注定着要让我看多人世间生生死死的离别....这于"死亡"这个一直都很沉重.也不敢启齿."我们每个人,年轻的时候都不相信自己会死"。

One day when we look back, we will realize that we don t really need that much, but then we cannot turn back time for what we have missed.Life is not about making money, acquiring power or recognition. Suppose a child comes home with a report card with five As and one B. Usually the first thinghis parents will say is “Why the B?“ What do you think will go through the child’s mind? Did hetry for the B? Or should his parents congratulate the child for the B and accept a lowerstandard? Not at all. What the child is really looking for acknowledgement and encouragement for the effort ingetting the five As. A parent after acknowledging and praising the As, can make clear hisexpectations of seeing all six As and offer help if needed. If we lower our standards, thechances are pretty good that the performance next time would drop to those expectations.Similarly at work, an employee does 100 things right and one thing wrong. Guess what theboss picks on.Acknowledge the positive but don”t lower your standards.假设一个孩子带回家一张五个A,一个B的成绩单,他的父母亲首先通常会这样问:“为什么得了个B?”你认为孩子心里会怎么想?莫非他是争取得个B吗?或者父母亲应当庆贺孩子得了个B,并承受这较低的标准吗?根本不是。

Let me tell you that nothing is further from the truth。

The world is full of very rich peoplewho are as miserable as if they were living in hell。

We have read stories about movie stars who committed suicide or died from drugs。

Quite clearly, money is not the only answer to all problems。

Wealth obtained through dishonest means does not bring happiness。

Lottery winnings do not bring happiness。

Gamble winnings do not bring happiness。

To my mind, the secret to happiness lies in your successful work,There is no use sayingin your contribution towards others’ happinessand in your wealth you have earned through your own honest effort。

If you obtain wealth through luck or dishonest means, you will know that it is ill earned money。

But be assured, fellow graduates, that we are more smlar than you mght thnk. f you have treated educaton as your man goal, and not as a means to an end, then you, too, have probably been clamed as a mssng person once n your academc career, whether you were lost n the stars or the stacks of Wdener Lbrary. And you, too, know that the journey was worth t, and that the power of knowledge makes me the most formdable 89-year-old woman at the bus stop.4级晨读英语美文2f somebody tells you, " ll love you for ever," wll you beleve t?dont thnk theres any reason not to. we are ready to beleve such commtment at the moment, whatever change may happen afterwards. By and by, however," fervent" gave way to " prosac" . Precsely because of ths change t became possble for love to last. Then what was meant by an everlastng love would eventually end up n a sort of nterdependence. We used to nsst on the dfference between love and lkng. The former seemed much more beautful than the latter. one day, however, t turns out theres really no need to make such dfference. Lkng s actually a sort of love. CompetitionIt is a plain fact that we are in a world where competition is going on in all areas and at all levels. This is exciting.Yet, on the other hand, competition breeze a pragmatic attitude.People choose to learn things that are useful, and do things that are profitable.Todays' college education is also affected by this general sense of utilitarianism. Many college students choose business nor computing programming as their majors convinced that this professions are where the big money is. It is not unusual to see the college students taking a part time jobs as a warming up for the real battle.I often see my friends taking GRE tests, working on English or computer certificates and taking the driving licence to get a licence. Well, I have nothing against being practical. As the competition in the job market gets more and more intense, students do have reasons to be practical. However, we should never forget that college education is much more than skill training. Just imagine, if your utilitarianism is prevails on campus, living no space for the cultivation of students' minds,or nurturing of their soul. We will see university is training out well trained spiritless working machines. If utilitarianism prevails society, we will see people bond by mind-forged medicals lost in the money-making ventures;we will see humality lossing their grace and dignity, and that would be disastrous.I'd like to think society as a courage and people persumed for profit or fame as a horese that pulls the courage.Yet without the driver picking direction the courage would go straight and may even end out in a precarious situation .A certificate may give you someadvantage, but broad horizons, positive attitudes and personal integrities ,these are assets you cannot acquire through any quick fixed way.In today's world, whether highest level of competition is not of skills or expertise , but vision and strategy. Your intellectual quality largely determinds how far you can go in your career.Chinese Undergraduates in the USEach year, elite American universities and liberal arts colleges, such as Yale, Harvard, Columbia, Amherst and Wellesley, offer a number of scholarships to Chinese high school graduates to study in their undergraduate programs. Four years ago, I received such a scholarship from Yale. What are these Chinese undergrads like? Most come from middle-class families in the big urban centers of China. The geographical distribution is highly skewed, with Shanghai and Beijing heavily over-represented. Outside the main pool, a number of Yale students come from Changsha and Ningbo, swhereseach year American Yale graduates are sent to teach English. The overwhelming majority of Chinese undergraduates in the US major in science, engineering or economics. Many were academic superstars in their high schools - gold medallists in international academic Olympiads or prize winners in national academic contests. Once on US campuses, many of them decide to make research a lifelong commitment.Life outside the classroom constitutes an important part of college life. At American universities the average student spends less than thirteen hours a week in class. Many Chinese students use their spare time to pick up some extra pocket money. At Yale, one of the most common campus jobs is washing dishes in thedining halls. Virtually all Chinese undergraduates at Yale work part-time in the dining halls at some point in their college years. As they grow in age and sophistication, they upgrade to better-paying and less stressful positions. The more popular and interesting jobs include working as a computer assistant, math homework grader, investment office assistant and lab or research assistant. The latter three often lead to stimulating summer jobs.Student activities are another prominent feature of American college life. Each week there are countless student-organized events of all sorts - athletic, artistic, cultural, political or social (i.e. just for fun). New student organizations are constantly being created, and Chinese undergrads contribute to this ferment. Sport looms much larger on US campuses than in China. At Yale, intramural sports from soccer to water polo take place all year long; hence athletic talent is a real social asset. One of the Chinese students at Yale several years ago was a versatile sportsman. His athletic talents and enthusiastic participation in sporting events, combined with his other fine qualities, made him a popular figure in his residential college.I Want to KnowIt doesn’t interest me what you do for a living. I want to know what you ache for, and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart’s longing. It doesn’t interest me how old you are. I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool for love, for your dreams, for the adventure of being alive. It doesn’t interest me what planets are squaring your moon.I want to know if you have touched the center of your own sorrow, if you have been opened by life’s betrayals or have become shriveled and closed from fear of further pain!It doesn’t interest me if the story you’re telling me is true.I want to know if you can disappoint another to be true to yourself; if you can bear the accusation of betrayal and not betray your own soul. if you can be faithful and therefore be trustworthy. It doesn’t interest me to know where you live or how much money you have. I want to know if you can get up after a night of grief and despair, weary and bruised to the bone, and do what needs to be done for the children. It doesn’t interest me where or what or with whom you have studied. I want to know what sustains you from the inside when all else falls away. I want to know if you can be alone with yourself, and if you truly like the company you keep in the empty moments. It doesn’t interest me who you are, how you came to be here. I want to know if you will stand in the center of the fire with me and not shrink back.I want to know if you can sit with pain, without moving to hide itI want to know if you can be with joy, mine or your own, if you can dance with wildness and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your fingers and toes without cautioning us to be careful, be realistic, or to remember the limitations of being human.I want to know if you can see beauty , if you can source your life from god’s presence. I want to know if you can live with failure, yours and mine, and still stand on the edge of a lake and shout to the silver of the full moon, “Yes!”Beautythere were a sensitivity and a beauty to her that have nothing to do with looks. She was one to be listened to, whose words were so easy to take to heart.I have thought about her often over the years and how she struggled in a society that places an incredible premium on looks, class, wealth and all the other fineries of life. She suffered from a disfigurement that cannot be made to look attractive. I know that her condition hurt her deeply.Would her life have been different had she been pretty? Chances are it would have. And yet there were a sensitivity and a beauty to her that had nothing to do with looks. She was one to be listened to, whose words were so easy to take to heart. Her words came from a wounded but loving heart, very much like all hearts, but she had more of a need to be aware of it, to live with it and learn from it. She possessed a fine-tuned sense of beauty. Her only fear in life was the loss of a friend. It is said that the true nature of being is veiled. The labor of words, the expression of art, the seemingly ceaseless buzz that is human thought all have in common the need to get at what really is so. The hope to draw close to and possess the truth of being can be a feverish one. In some cases it can even be fatal, if pleasure is one's truth and its attainment more important than life itself. In other lives, though, the search for what is truthful gives life. The truth of her life was a desire to see beyond the surface for a glimpse of what it is that matters. She found beauty and grace and they befriended her, and showed her what is real.Work and PleasureTo be really happy and really safe, one ought to have at least two or three hobbies, and they must all be real. It is no use starting late in life to say: “I will take an interest in this or that.” Such an attempt only aggravates the strain of mental effort. A man may acquire great knowledge of topics unconnected withhis daily work, and yet hardly get any benefit or relief. It is no use doing what you like; you have got to like what you do. Broadly speaking, human beings may be divided into three classes: those who are toiled to death, those who are worried to death, and those who are bored to death. It is no use offering the manual labourer, tired out with a hard week’s sweat and effort, the chance of playing a game of football or baseball on Saturday afternoon. It is no use inviting the politician or the professional or business man, who has been working or worrying about serious things for six days, to work or worry about trifling things at the weekend. It may also be said that rational, industrious useful human beings are divided into two classes: first, those whose work is work and whose pleasure is pleasure; and secondly, those whose work and pleasure are one. Of these the former are the majority. They have their compensations. The long hours in the office or the factory bring with them as their reward, not only the means of sustenance, but a keen appetite for pleasure even in its simplest and most modest forms. But Fortune’s favoured children belong to the second class. Their life is a natural harmony. For them the working hours are never long enough. Each day is a holiday, and ordinary holidays when they come are grudged as enforced interruptions in an absorbing vocation. Yet to both classes the need of an alternative outlook, of a change of atmosphere, of a diversion of effort, is essential. Indeed, it may well be that those whose work is their pleasure are those who most need the means of banishing it at intervals from their minds.。

Before that period the city was a small highly compact cluster in which people moved about on foot and goods were conveyed by horse and cart. But the early factories built in the 1830s and 1840s were located along waterways and near railheads at the edges of cities, and housing was needed for the thousands of people drawn by the prospect of employment. In time, the factories were surrounded by proliferating mill towns of apartments and row houses that abutted the older, main cities. As a defense against this encroachment and to enlarge their tax bases, the cities appropriated their industrial neighbors. In 1854, for example, the city of Philadelphia annexed most of Philadelphia County. Similar municipal maneuvers took place in Chicago and in New York. Indeed, most great cities of the United States achieved such status only by incorporating the communities along their borders. With the acceleration of industrial growth came acute urbancrowding and accompanying social stress --conditions that began to approach disastrous proportions when, in 1888, the first commercially successful electric traction line was developed. Within a few years the horse-drawn trolleys were retired and electric streetcar networks crisscrossed and connected every major urban area, fostering a wave of suburbanization that transformed the compact industrial city into a dispersed metropolis. This first phase of mass-scale suburbanization was reinforced by the simultaneous emergence of the urban Middle Class, whose desires for homeownership in neighborhoods far from the aging inner city were satisfied by the developers of single-family housing tracts.

Text 1 The Scientific AttitudeWhat is the nature of the scientific attitude, the attitude of the man or woman who studies and applies physics, biology, chemistry, geology, engineering, medicine or any other Science? We all know that science plays an important role in the societies in which we live. Many people believe, however, that our progress depends on two different aspects of science. The first of these is the application of the machines, products and systems of applied knowledge that scientists and technologists develop. Through technology, science helps man to gain increasing control over his environment. The second aspect is the application by all members of society of the special methods of thought and action that scientists use in their work. What are these special methods of thinking and acting? First of all, it seems that a successful scientist is full of curiosity—he wants to find out how and why the universe works. He usually directs his attention towards problems which he notices have no satisfactory explanation, and his curiosity makes him look for underlying(含蓄的,潜在的) relationships even if the data available seem to be unconnected. Moreover, he thinks he can improve the existing conditions, whether of pure or applied knowledge, and enjoys trying to solve the problems which this involves. He is a good observer, accurate, patient and objective and applies persistent and logical thought to the observations he makes. He utilizes the facts he observes to the fullest extent. He is skeptical (好怀疑的) —he does not accept statements which are not based on the most complete evidence available and therefore rejects authority as the sole basis for truth. The scientist always checks statements and makes experiments carefully and objectively to verify them. Furthermore, he is not only critical of the work of others, but also of his own, since he knows that a number of factors tend to disturb neutral and objective investigation. Lastly, he is highly imaginative since he often has to look for relationships in data which are not only complex but also frequently incomplete. Furthermore, he needs imagination if he wants to make hypotheses of how processes work and how events take place. These seem to be some of the ways in which a successful scientist or technologist thinks and acts.[A] aspects [B] application [C] attitude [D] curiosity [E] incomplete [F] investigation [G] neutral [H] persistent [I] satisfactory [J] sole [K] unconnected [L] utilizes [M] verify科学态度科学态度,即那些研究和应用物理、生物、化学、地质、工程、医药或其他任何科学的男人或女人的态度。

1. The second aspect is the application by all members of society of the special methods of thought and action that scientists use in their work.【分析】复合句。

of society 修饰all members,of the special methods of thought and action 修饰application, that 引导定语从句修饰thought and action。

2. He usually directs his attention towards problems which he notices have no satisfactory explanation, and his curiosity makes him look for underlying relationships even if the data available seem to be unconnected.【分析】并列复合句。

第二个分句中look for...unconnected 作makes 的宾语补足语,其中even if 引导让步状语从句。

3. He is skeptical —he does not accept statements which are not based on the most complete evidence available and therefore rejects authority as the sole basis for truth.【
