Looking around the room, the father was very surprised and very angry. And the young man succeeded with the help of the ring。

Fantasies for young readers really began with the fairy tales of writers such as the Brothers Grimm。

Of course, all the children who grow up reading these books and tales never, at heart, really grow up at all, for such wonderful stories are forever carved in their minds. And fairy tales are as much fun to read when we are fifty, only for memorable reasons, as they are when we are children。

But it’s obvious these days that fantasies aren’t only for the little ones. In 1977, 23 years after TheLordoftheRings by Tolkien was published, Terry Brooks published
his first novel, TheSwordofShannara。

It became the first work of fiction ever to appear on theNewYorkTimes Trade Paperback Bestseller List, where it remained for over five months. Following the release of Tolkien’s work, earlier works of fantasy, like T.H. White's OnceandFutureKing and Eric Eddison's TheMezentianGate(in 1958) came out before TheSwordofShannara, but neither had an influence quite like TheSwordofShannara. Fantasies were truly reborn。

As the popularity of fantasies began to grow quickly, the film and television industry climbed_aboard_the_bandwagon. During the eighties, the fantasy/adventure movie was born。

Conan is a classic to the eighties. Other less memorable films can still be found in video stores。

The lack of really good fantasy movies in the recent past can be blamed on substandard (标准以下的) special effects。

However, now, in an age of postmodern computer technology, the impossible is no longer a concern。

Since the release and popularity of TheLordoftheRings, cinema screen production rights have been purchased for scores of fantasy novels, from Terry Brooks to Robert Jordan。

The future of fantasies has never looked so assured。

Even children's cinema has had its own successes through the big screen release of the HarryPotter series and the classic PeterPan. While there remains a choice to go beyond the reality we know, there will always be fantasies。

__2__ Provide individual features for the protagonist's philosophical and immediate motivations, and try to explain them fully or properly. What is the conflict within? Who blocks his efforts in the real world? Then build your villain (反面人物), the one blocking the protagonist, in the same way。

Build characters。

__3__ Write a treatment tracing how each plays into the main dramatic action, with one event leading to another.
Redraft the idea. Redraft your original idea and story to adjust for what you have learned so far. __4__ None of this needs to be perfect, nor does the novel have to remotely resemble your plans and outlines. You are charting a path to tell the story。

Write every day。

A.Detail the protagonist。

B.Expand on the story and subplots.
C.Quality in writing is achieved through rewriting。

Gene Wolfe is one of the most admired and respected American science fiction and
fantasy writers. He is also a productive writer of outstanding short fiction, which is collected in many volumes over the last forty years, most recently in TheBestofGeneWolfe.
Although Wolfe is not as wellknown to readers as he once was, he has been the receiver of great praise, including three World Fantasy Awards, two Nebulas, and eight Hugo Award nominations (提名)。

Sci。

fi author Harlan Ellison has called him,“no less than one of the fi nest, most original writers in the world today”,and the EncyclopediaofScienceFiction names him “quite possibly the most important” writer in the field of science fiction.
Born in 1931, New York, Gene Wolfe moved frequently as a child, but spent most of his growing.up years in Texas. Wolfe began writing fiction in 1956, selling his first story, TheDeadMan, to Sir magazine in 1965。

He produced a vast amount of short fiction during the 1960s and 1970s,many of which were published in Damon Knight’s Orbit antho logies. In 1972 Wolfe’s groundbreaking TheFifthHeadofCerberus appeared。

The story of human conquest (征服) upon two distant planets, the book examines issues of identity, individuality, and the results of colonialism upon both the colonized and the colonizer. The novel was later listed in David Pringle’s 1985 list of The 100 Best Novels in science fiction for the period 1949-1984.
Many of his novels,TheShadowoftheTorturer included, rely on a diary or letter to tell his story。

In addition,Wolfe’s early inter est in mystery novels shines through in his ability to drop cleverly hidden clues (线索) that allow the reader to grasp at the possible narrative behind the narrative。

By 1984 Wolfe was able to retire and devote himself full。

time to his writing. Yet despite (尽管) all this, and despite the continuing respect of his colleagues, his work has become somewhat unfamiliar. Wolfe’s admirers hope this fact will be at least somewhat improved by his most recent offering, TheWizardKnight, which falls within the fantasy type that is currently popular。

Nelle Harper Lee was born on April 28, 1926, in Monroeville, Alabama。

As a child,Harper Lee was a tomboy (假小子)。

She fought on the playground. She talked back to teachers, and she was bored with school. In high school Lee was lucky enough to have
a gifted English teacher, Gladys Watson Burkett, who made her fall in love with literature and taught her how to write well。

There Lee loved nineteenthcentury British authors best, and once said that her dream was to become “the Jane Austen of South Alabama”.

Despite her father's hope that she would become a local attorney (律师) like her sister Alice, Lee went to New York for her writing.
She spent eight years working small jobs before she finally showed a manuscript (手稿) to Tay Hohoff, an editor at J.B. Lippincott. At this point, it was more like a string of stories than the novel that Lee wanted to write。

Under Hohoff’s guidance, two and a half years of rewriting followed. Finally the novel was ready for publication。

ToKillaMockingbird was published in 1960 to highly favorable reviews and quickly climbed the bestseller lists, where it remained for eighty.eight weeks. In 1961, the novel won the Pulitzer Prize。

The word or phrase that you use to open your email account may provide a key to your personality as well as to your correspondence (信件),according to a British psychologist. Helen Petrie, professor of human/computer interaction (交互作用) at City, University in London, analysed the responses of 1,200 Britons who participated in a survey funded (提供资金) by CentralNic, an Internet domain name company. The results were recently published on CentralNic’s website。

Petrie identifies three main password “types”.“Family oriented” respondents numbered nearly half of those surveyed。

These people used their own name or nickname, the name of a child, partner, or pet or a birth date as their password. They tend to be occasional computer users and have strong family ties. “They choose passwords that
symbolize people or events with emotional value,” says Petrie. One third of respondents were “fans”,using the names of athletes, singers, movie stars, fictional characters,or sports teams. Petrie says fans are young and want to attach themselves to the lifestyle represented by a celebrity。

Two of the most popular names were Madonna and Homer Simpson。

The third main group of participants are “cry.ptics" because they pick confusing passwords or a random (随机的) string of letters, numbers, and symbols such as “Jxa +157". Petrie says cryptics are the most security。

conscious group. They tend to make the safest but least interesting choices.
Passwords are revealing for two reasons. First, because they are invented on the spot. “Since you are focused on getting into a system, for example your email ac count, you’re likely to write down something that comes quickly to mind,” says Petrie。

“In this sense passwords take advantage of things that are just below the surface of consciousness。

Also, to remember your password, you pick something that will stick in your mind. You may unconsciously choose something of particular emotional importance。
