Dear Alice,
Thank you for your last letter. I enjoy reading it very much. Thank you for telling me about your best friend. In this letter I will introduce you mine. Her name is Rose. Rose has long, dark brown hair and green eyes. She is the same age as me, but a little taller. She is always happy and cheerful. We sit together in class, and help each other with our homework. We always go home together after school and play computer games for an hour. Rose thinks very quickly and usually wins. Rose is learning to play the piano. I am learning to play the flute. We practise playing the musical instruments together every day. We play simple duets for piano and flute. They are fun. Sometimes Rose stays overnight t my flat, or I stay overnight at her house. We always have a lovely time. Have you ever stayed at your best friend’s house? Write to me soon.

<D> As a child and as an adult as well-Bill Gates was untidy. It is said that in order to counteract this , his mother, Mary, made weekly clothing plans for him. Bill Gates hated wasting time, whether at work or during his leisure time. Every year, he and his friends would go to sumer camp. Bill especially liked swimming and other sports. One of his summer camp friends recalled, “we all knew Bill was smarter than us. Even back then, when e was nine or ten years old, he talked like an adult and could express himself in ways that none of us understood.”
Bill was also well ahead of his classmates in mathematics and science. His parents sent him to Lakeside. In this school, “even the dumb kids were smart”. In 1968, the school gained access to a computer -a Program Data processor (PDP) -through a teletype machine. Type in a few instructions on the machine and a few seconds later the PDP would type back its response. It hooked Bill Gates and his best friends, Kent Evans and Paul Allen, immediately. Whenever they had free time, and sometimes when they didn’t, they would dash over to the computer room to use the machine. At 14, Bill was already writing short programs for the computer to perform. Early games programs such as Tic-Tac―Toe, or Noughts and Crosses, and Lunar Landing were written in what was to become Bill’s second language, BASIC. Bill and Paul read a great deal. Paul enjoyed magazines like Populr Electronics, while Bill read business magazines. Computer time was expensive and both boys were desperate to do more. Because Bill already had an insight into what they could achieve financially, the two of them decided to set themselves up as a company:”The Lakeside Programmers Group”. “Let’s call the real world and try to sell something to it!” Bill announced.
