The hit movie Notting Hill (《诺丁山》)
begins with a famous scene. Hugh Grant bumps into (撞
到)Julia Roberts and spills orange juice all over her. After the collision (碰
撞), Grant repeatedly says: “I am so sorry. I am so sorry”.
His behavior in this scene is very British. If Roberts' character were from Britain then she would probably apologize repeated ly as well — even if the collision was not her fault. But this do
esn’t happen in the film, as Roberts is from the US.
A report in The Telegraph last week said that three-
quarters of British people apologize when they bump into som eone in the street - regardless of whether they are responsibl e or not. In fact, we Britons use “sorry” in many situations. For example, if we mishear someone, we say “Sorry?” The perso n we are talking to will also apologize by replying: “No, I am s orry!” This can go on for a while as we compete over who is th e most sorry.
Life is never as simple as “duibuqi” and “meiguanxi”.
How we use “sorry” has changed. Traditionally, “sorry” was us ed to express deep regret, but a survey in 2007 showed that we use it to mean anything from “What?” to “Whatever!”.
Why are Britons so sorry? Mark Tyrell, a psychology writer in t he UK, thinks that our apologetic tendencies (倾
向)are rooted in the British class system. We say sorry becau se historically the new middle classes in Britain had to apologi ze for not being working class, but also for not really being up per class. Another theory is that we apologize to avoid confro ntation (对
抗). For example, if you bump into someone they might get an gry. To avoid this we say “Sorry!” right away.
True manners are about being considerate (体贴
的),and the modern day obsession (执
着)with apologizing shows that we are perhaps not as thought ful as we once were. The word has lost some of its meaning. Do you see my point? Sorry, it might just be a British thing...
55. The author mentions a scene in the hit movie Notting Hill at the beginning to ______.
A. introduce different ways of saying sorry
B. give an example of British manners
C. show what kind of men are considered gentlemen in the U K
D. draw our attention to how and when British people say sorr y

A. Americans care less about manners than British people do.
B. The fact British people apologize so much is linked to the cl ass system.
C. British people care too much about which social class they are from.
D. People shouldn’t apologize if they are not responsible.
57. We can conclude from the article that the author thinks __ ___.
A. it’s unnecessary for British people to be so polite
B. the obsession with apologizing shows Britons are truly sinc ere
C. Britons should stick to the traditional use of the word sorry
D. the change of how British people use sorry is because of la nguage development
58. What is the main point of the article?
A. To explore the best way of saying sorry.
B. Britons’ overuse of sorry and why.
C. To suggest many British people lack traditional manners.
D. To show how saying sorry has changed over time.

Over the years I often ran into him as he walked to his old pic kup truck on the coldest days with snow blowing and everyon
e with their collars turned up and their hands in their pockets. He would be there with a garbage bag full o
f aluminum cans. He’d toss (扔)it into the back of his truck and jump in. I’d reac h my car and jump in and we’d all race to the exit of this bi
g
h alf-empty parking lot.
One day I was working on a broken machine in this factory an d the can man came by with his bag, picking up cans. Our ma nager was standing there because the machine I was working on had been “down” for a couple of hours and he was getting worried that we might run out of parts for one of the assembly lines (装配线).
As I was finishing, I stood up just as the manager asked the c an man what he did with all those cans. I'd never thought to a sk him that question because I always just assumed he cashe d them in at the recycling center.
“I give them to my neighbor. He’s epileptic (有癫痫病的),” the can man said.
“You mean you’ve been collecting all those cans for all these years for your neighbor?” I blurted out.
“It’s not much,” he said. “But I give them to him. He can’t hold a job.”
Right then and there I found myself looking straight at him. He was wearing a T-

The loveliest house that I have ever lived in was one that my grandparents owned. This house was called Crosslands and I lived there when I was a child.
I had some very happy times at Crosslands. It seemed so big to me as a child. It had a beautiful living room with a piano in i t and a hall area with lots of carpets and antiques (古
董). And there was a mysterious drawing room which we only used on Sundays or on special occasions.
I used to be amazed by this room because it had the best furn iture in it but it was covered up with sheets (床
单).It was as if all the furniture was wearing clothes and it see med ridiculous (荒谬
的)to me that we couldn^ enjoy this lovely furniture all week lo ng.
My favorite room was probably the kitchen. It had a lovely red floor, which was always polished, and one big cooker to heat t
he whole room so it was always warm. There was also a kind of clotheshorse(晒衣
架)above it that we used to hang all our stuff on, and it was ju st lovely. It was a very warm room and my grandmother used to make ice cream that we'd eat there.
I spent a lot of time in the vegetable garden, picking peas and eating them. My grandmother used to get really cross with m e because I would pick all the vegetables and fruit for dinner, but eat half of it before she could start cooking. The homegro wn food tasted so fresh and delicious.
I went back to Crosslands a few years ago and it was a big mi stake. They've modernized the house and got rid of those lov ely old fireplaces. They've also knocked a wall down so the dr awing room and living room have become one big modem roo m. I think what upset me most about going back was the feeli ng that the house had shrunk (缩
小). It had become smaller and my memory of this lovely, larg e, warm, comfortable house was completely different. It taugh t me a valuable lesson: we can’t always recapture (再体

f it with us.

British people, writes BBC reporter Denise Winterman, were b rought up on the idea of three square meals a day being a nor mal eating pattern (模式),but this is changing.
Family dinner around a table, according to Winterman, is in d ecline (衰
落)and the UK is not the only country experiencing such chan ge.
A traditional English breakfast includes sausages, bacon, frie d eggs, mushrooms, baked beans, fried tomatoes, and toast with butter. However, these days most people don’t eat a tradi tional breakfast every day, or even at all. This is because it is very greasy (油腻
的). Most people eat a bowl of cereal with milk, or have a slice of toast with butter to start the day.
Take a look at a typical British Sunday. For millions of Britons, Sundays have gone from quiet church-
going and housework days, to days of happy shopping and so cializing. People get up later and eat brunch at pubs. Fewer p eople bother to cook for themselves.
As for lunch, sandwiches dominate (占主
导). Today the average time taken to eat lunch - usually in fro
nt of a computer—
is about 15 minutes, according to researchers at the Universit y of Westminster.
According to the British Sandwich Association, a sandwich is a popular lunch choice for 75 percent or Britons. People in the country buy about 3 billion ready-
made sandwiches a year, meaning each Briton eats about 20 0 sandwiches annually.
Dinner is the main meal of the day, and a time for people to re lax and enjoy a cooked meal with friends or family after a hard day at work. But when the first microwave meal came on to t he market in 1986, the family dinner began to decline.
While a formal family dinner may be eaten by fewer people no wadays, the dinner party with friends certainly isn’t over - than ks to the huge sales of recipe books by celebrity chefs.
