We sat at a long table th at displayed storybooks, DVDs and poem collec tions, some in English, some in Chinese. The walls were almost completely hidden behind row after row of Chinese and English compositions, poems, stage photographs and welcome messages.
“Do you think these were written by kids of our age?” Yang Lin asked me in low voice.
“I hope not. I don’t think I can write such good English speeches or compositions. Nor can I perform as professionally as they do in those photos.”
Yang Lin nodded, “Maybe we are in the wrong class. Our English is good, but I don’t think either of us can be as good as those ki ds.”

杨林点点头:“可能我们走错班了吧。
我们的英语挺好,但我认为咱们俩谁也没有那些孩子那么好。
”
Our conversation was interrupted by a short, black-ha ired man. “I’m glad to have you in this summer’s English camp. My name is David Li. I have lived i n Canada for the past 15 years. I’ll be with you for the next 4 weeks.”
He walked around and continued, “Before we started, I couldn’t help hearing some of your conversation. We have some beautiful articles, poems and photos displayed here from previous groups. You don’t need to feel uneasy. You are able to do that too, but at this moment, you may not realize it. Like every year’s camp. Have some students from China, and some from Canada. Remember the important thing in this camp is to make a lot of
friends and have fun.”

Yang Lin and I exchanged looks. Now we felt a little relaxed. The first thing we did in the camp was to introduce ourselves to others. Well, my English wasn’t that bad. It was actually better than the Canadian students’ Chinese. In the afternoon, we took a trip to an old-fashioned farm kitchen. We saw how steamed-bread was made and we took the opportunity to make it ourselves. With our hands full of flour, I couldn’t wait to find out what was waiting for us the next day. Must be something fun too!
