Betty teaches Physics at a university four times a week. Today, at the beginning of the class, she asked her students happily how their weekend had been. One student said it was awful because he had his bad tooth pulled out. He then asked why Betty always seemed to be so cheerful.
Betty thought for a while and began to tell them about her weekend. Betty’s mother is ill in hospital these days, so she goes there to take care of her after class. Last Friday, after giving lessons to the students, she drove to the hospital. The hospital is 16 miles away from the university. When she was still several miles away from the hospital, her car broke down. So she walked to the hospital and arrived there a bit later than usual. Betty told her mother that her car had broken down, but this was her lucky day. Her mother didn’t understand why. Betty explained, “My working place is 16 miles away from the hospital. My car didn’t break down far away from here. Instead, it broke down in the perfect place within walking distance from here. I’m still able to see you, mum.” After hearing that, her mother smiled.
Betty looked at her students' faces after telling the story. Although it was a morning class, no one seemed to be sleepy. Her story had touched them. Or maybe it wasn’t the story at all. It was her happiness that had touched them.

Most American high schools publish a yearbook. The yearbook usually comes out every year in spring . It is a “book of memories” for the students.
Inside a yearbook is each student’s photo. The seniors are graduating soon, so their photos appear first. The teachers have photos, too. The yearbook also has photos and descriptions of all the sports teams and after-school activities, such as drama group and chess club.
There is a yearbook club. The students in the club write and design all year for the yearbook. At the end of the year, the book is printed.
In the yearbook, some students receive special awards. For example, the senior students vote and choose the funniest student to be the class clown. They also vote a student with a good fashion sense to be the “best dressed”.
Students always sign each other’s yearbooks. This is especially important for the seniors, because they are leaving school. Students also write notes to each other, such as “We had a lot of fun,”or “I will never forget you.”They also write about all the fun and funny experiences they shared in school together.

D.Jack Ma is now a billionaire (亿万富翁). Many people take him as a
role model, but how much do you know about his success?
Ma was born and raised in Hangzhou. He used to be very ordinary, but he worked hard. When he was 12, he got interested in English. For eight years, he rode his bicycle for 40 minutes every morning to a hotel. There Ma showed foreign visitors around Hangzhou for free. That experience not only improved his English, but also widened his horizons.
Ma became an English teacher after his graduation from university. However, he had always dreamed of starting a business.
In the early 1990s, Ma left the university to follow his dream. After a hard time finding a job, he was employed as a translator.
In 1995, he went to the United States to work as a translator for a group of business people. There, one of his friends showed him the internet. Ma had never seen the internet before. He was interested in the technology and thought that the internet might help him realize his business dream.
Ma suffered much hardship during his early business career. Finally, in 1999, he set up his own company, Alibaba, in his apartment.

In today’s world many people seem to be hungry for money. Some of them even lose their lives for it. Money does have its most useful effect on the poor, but once a person has a rich life, a lot more money doesn’t m ean more happiness.
If money was everything, all millionaires would have true love, true friendship, good health and a long life. However, this is not always true.
Nothing else is more pleasant than the three words which are “I love you”. But can love be bought? I’m afraid not. Love means to give, not to take. To every person, health and long life are probably the most precious things. Well, can health and a long life be bought with money? The answer is “No”.
Of all the longest living people in the world, few of them are millionaires. True friendship can’t be bought either. In a word, where people believe money means everything, money can cause brothers to quarrel, lovers to hate, strangers to fight and so on. No matter how much money you have, it is still not enough to make you a happy person if you have not one to laugh with, no one to cry for.

San Francisco is going to do what many other cities have already done---provide free bicycles to the public. The mayor of San Francisco supports the bicycle program. He wants to improve the terrible traffic problems in the city. At first, 40 to 60 bikes will be available only to city workers. People will give their old bikes to the city to use in the program. If
this program is successful, one day more than 1000 bicycles will be available. Everyone, not just city workers, will be able to use these bicycles.
People in Fresno (弗雷斯诺市) California already have a free bicycle program. In fact, this idea began in Amsterdam over 40 years ago. These programs encourage citizens to get out of their cars and onto pollution-free bikes. Fresno’s Yellow Bike Program puts about forty bicycles around the city. The bikes are painted bright yellow so people know they can take them. When people take a yellow bike, they can ride to work or to shopping areas, and then leave the bike for the next rider.
Some people worry that the free bikes will be stolen. However, stealing hasn’t been a problem in other free-bike cities. Though most people think the bike program is a good idea, only a few say they will use it. Phil Cheng says, “There are too many cars on the road. Riding a bicycle can be dangerous. There are not many bike lanes.” He adds, “What’s more, it’s too cold in the winter. And what if you ride a bike to work, and then there isn’t one to ride home?”
Program leaders know there will be problems. But they think it’s worth trying. “It’s not the solution for everyone,” say s Sylvia Pass. “But if just one hundred people use it every day, that’s one hundred cars that aren’t on the streets, one hundred parking spaces that aren’t used. I think it’s a great beginning.”

While he was there, he also went to the supermarket. He bought some nice food for supper. He came out of the shop and put the presents and food in the back of his car. Then he went to visit a friend who lived round the corner. He wished him Merry Christmas. He stayed with his friend for about an hour. It started getting dark so he decided to go home.
As he was driving home, he got a flat tyre. He was not very good at changing tyres. Luckily, another man stopped and offered to change the tyre. Mario was pleased that someone helped him! The man told Mario to get in the car because it was raining a lot. He said he would change the tyre for him. The man, who seemed really friendly and helpful took the flat tyre off. Then he put the good tyre on. Mario thanked the man. The man said goodbye and got in his car and left.
When Mario arrived home, he went to get the presents. That was when he discovered the man was a thief. Everything including the old tyre, the Christmas presents and the food were not there except a ticket. Mario didn’t collect the prize money with the ticket. He put an advertisement in the newspaper, asking the thief to come and get the ticket. The thief went to see Mario and got the ticket back. Then he went to collect the prize money. Q: And now you're the fans' favourite.
Harry: The fans make a big difference. You need their support. It gives you strength if you're trying to score.
Q: Then you were picked for the England team. You were 21, and you were on the bench for a match at Wembley. You made your first show there. Harry:It was amazing. It was at Wembley that I ran out onto the playground.
Q: And how long did it take you to score your first goal for England? Harry: I think it was 80 seconds.
Q:The fans were singing, "He scores when he wants!" And that's true. You've won the Golden Boot twice for the most goals scored in the Premier League! What gives you so much confidence?
Harry:Hard work. Hours of practice. And belief. If you don't believe in yourself, not many others will.
Q: Thank you very much, Harry.
Harry: You are welcome.
