Brain cells work to actively forget memories during a specific period of sleep. When we sleep our brains clear out the memories we’ve made while we’re awake, deciding what to keep and what to get rid of. Forgetting is an active process, explained the authors of the study published in the journal Science. But less is known about this process during the different periods of sleep.
They found that during the rapid eye movement (REM ) sleep period — or active sleep when we are thought to dream — special nerve cells appear to actively contribute to forgetting. What are known as melanin-concentrating hormone-producing (MCH) neurons (神经元) sit in the hypothalamus (下丘脑): a part of the brain which helps with a range of functions such as sleep, appetite and emotions. Past research has suggested these cells help to control REM sleep patterns: activating the MCH neurons increasing time spentin this period, while preventingthemreducing changes into this period.
The scientists looked at MCH cells in mice, and found 52.8 percent were active during REM sleep, compared with 35 percent when the mice were awake. Study co-author Thomas Kilduff, director of the Center for Neuroscience at SRI International, told Newsweek the team was surprised to find that mice performed better on learning and memory tasks when the MCH cells were prevented. “This result suggests that activation of the MCH neurons may affect memory — that is, MCH neurons may facilitate forgetting,” Kilduff explained.
When asked what motivated the study, Kilduff said, “We hope the work could deepen our understanding of Alzheimer’s disease. Understanding the neural basis of learning and memory is a huge area of neuroscience research because of its effects on our everyday lives, as well as diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease. Prior to this work, no one suspected that MCH neurons had anything to do with forgetting,” said Kilduff.
4. What can we infer from paragraph 1?
A. Forgetting is a passive process.
B. The forgetting process is known to us.
C. Some memories are forgotten while we are awake.
D. Certain memories are removed while we are asleep.
5. What does the underlined word “them” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. REM sleep patterns.
B. Past researches.
C. MCH neurons.
D. A range of functions.
6. Why did Kilduff’s team conduct the research?
A. To publish the study in the journal Science.
B. To know more about Alzheimer’s disease.
C. To contribute to human’s forgetting.
D. To explore our everyday lives.
7. What can we know about MCH?
A. MCH cells takes control of REM sleep patterns .
B. MCH neurons may disturb memory consolidation.
C. MCH neurons have nothing to do with forgetting.
D. MCH cells help mice performing better on learning.

While the start of a new school year is always exciting, this year was even more so for some elementary school students inAuckland,New Zealand. They became the world’s first kids to be “taught” by a digital teacher. Before you start imagining a human-like robot walking around the classroom, Will is just an avatar that appears on the student’s desktop, or smartphone screen, when ordered to come.
The autonomous animation platform has been modeled after the human brain and nervous system, allowing it to show human-like behavior. The digital teacher is assigned to teach Vector’s “Be sustainable with energy”— a free program forAucklandelementary schools.
Just like the humans it replaced, Will is able to instantly react to the students’ responses to the topic. Thanks to a webcam and microphone, the avatar not only responds to questions the kids may have, but also picks up non-verbal cues. For instance, if a student smiles at Will, he responds by smiling back. This two-way interaction not only helps attract the students’ attention, but also allows the program’s developers to monitor their engagement, and make changes if needed.
Nikhil Ravishankar believes that Will-like avatars could be a novel way to catch the attention of the next generation. He says, “I have a lot of hope in this technology as a means to deliver cost-effective, rich, educational experience in the future.”
The program, in place since August 2018, has been a great success thus far. Ravishankar says, “ What was
fascinating to me was the reaction of the children to Will. The way they look at the world is so creative and different, and Will really captured their attention.” However, regardless of how popular it becomes, Will is unlikely to replace human educators any time soon.
8. What was special for some elementary school students inAuckland?
A. A digital teacher taught them.
B. They first saw something digital.
C. This was the start of a new school year.
D. They could get close to smartphone screen.

A. It can smile back.
B. It can use microphone.
C. It can talk any topic for free.
D. It can change if necessary.
10. What’s Ravishankar’s attitude to Will’s replacing Human educators soon?
A. Optimistic.
B. Doubtful.
C. Unclear.
D. Disapproving.
11. What might be the best title for the passage?
A. New High-tech Contributes to Education
B. The World’s First Digital Teacher Appears in Classroom.
C. The World’s First Digital Teacher, a Help to Students
D.New ZealandWill Replace Teachers in Classrooms

Each year, the women of Olney and Liberal compete in an unusual footrace. Dressed in aprons (围裙) and headscarves, they wait at both towns’starting lines. Each woman holds a frying pan with one pancake inside. At the signal, the women flip (轻抛) pancakes and they’re off!
This “pancake racing” tradition is said to have started on Shrove Tuesday, 1445, in Olney. Shrove Tuesday is the day beforethe Christian season of Lent (大斋戒) begins. During Lent, many people decide to give up sugary or fatty foods.
Legend says that in 1445, an Olney woman was making pancakes to use up some of her sugar and cooking fats before Lent. She lost track of time and suddenly heard the church bells ring, signaling the beginning of the Shrove Tuesday service. Realizing that she was going to be late for church, she raced out the door still wearing her apron and headscarf and holding her frying pan with a pancake in it. In the following years, the woman’s neighbors
imitated her dash to church, and pancake racing was born.
The rules are simple. Racers must wear the traditional headscarf and apron. They must flip their pancakes twice - once before starting and once after crossing the finish line. After the race, there are Shrove Tuesday church services. Then Liberal and Olney connect through a video call to compare race times and declare a winner.
In both towns, the races have grown into larger festivals. Olney’s festival is an all-day event starting with a big pancake breakfast. Liberal’s festival lasts four days and includes a parade, a talent show, and contests that feature eating and flipping pancakes. Although the women’s race is still the main event, both towns now hold additional races for boys and girls of all ages.
12. How did pancake racing start?
A. A woman in Olney created it.
B. Women made pancakes before Lent.
C. A woman dashed to church with a pancake.
D. People followed the suit of an interesting incident.
13. What should racers obey during the race?
A. They can wear fashionable headscarves and aprons.
B. They must flip their pancakes once in the race.
C. They must flip their pancakes at the beginning of the race.
D. They can flip their pancakes in the middle of the race.
14. What can we learn about the race from the last paragraph?
A. People can show their talent in Olney festival.
B. People can enjoy a one-day holiday in Liberal.
C. The race is not only intended for women now.
D. People can have a big pancake breakfast in both towns.
15. What is the text mainly about?

Endangered species
An endangered species is a group of animalsthat could soon become extinct.____16____Many species are nearly extinct and could disappear off the face of the earth very soon if we don’t do anything to save them. There are many reasons why species become endangered.
Habitat destruction is the main reason why animals become endangered and this happens in two ways. When humans move into a new area, the animals’ habitat is destroyed and there is nowhere for them to live and nothing to eat because humans chop down trees and build houses and farms.____17____Chemicals in rivers and poisons on farms cause the destruction of animals’ homes and food supplies.
Endangered species are also the result of hunting and fishing. Animals have been brought to the edge of extinction because they are killed for their highly-valued meat, fur, bones or skin, or just for sport.____18____ ____19____We should take care not to pollute natural areas, and farmers or companies who destroy animal habitats should face severe financial penalties. The public can help out by refusing to buy any products made from these animals’ body parts. Governments can help, too, by making it against the law to hunt, fish or trade in endangered species. They can also provide funding for animal sanctuaries (禁猎区), to protect animals from extinctionby breeding more endangered animals, which they later release into the wild.____20____
A. Animal habitats are also destroyed because of pollution.
B. Eventually, all the creatures on Earth will enjoy being together.
C. Recent changes, however, have helped to improve the situation.
D. So what can individuals and governments do to protect endangered species?
E. Extinction happens when the last of the species has died out and there will be no more.
F. If we all cooperate and take these steps, we will protectthese animals for future generations.
G. Overfishing has resulted in many large sea creatures becoming endangered species, like sharks.

第二节书面表达(满分25分)
52.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

One summer vacation, I learned some kids volunteered as guide dog raisers for a guide dog training center. Then I also wanted to take part in it. My parents supported it.
After I filled out the application form to be a guide dog raiser, two of the training center's workers came to my house to meet me and my family. They said, “After the volunteer helps raise a guide dog puppy for a year, the dog needs to be returned to the training center. There the dog will receive a five-month professional guide-dog training. Then the dog will stay with a blind person and help with his or her life.” The workers told us what a big responsibility it was to raise a guide dog puppy. And I promised I would do a great job.
We later got a call that our puppy was coming soon—a female yellow puppy. When Dad and I picked her up, I was glad. She was the prettiest dog I’d ever seen. Her name was Nisha. When I started working with Nisha, I learned right away how intelligent dogs are. Guide dog puppies seem to know they're special and were born to do special work. My main job was to help her grow, teach her basic house rules and how to get along with people, and let her learn about public places.
Nisha loved to ride in the car. I was allowed to take her anywhere a trained guide dog could go, including stores and buses. Nisha was a good listener. Whenever I felt I needed to talk to someone, Nisha was always there. She was a lovely puppy.
During the year, Nisha and my whole family developed a very close relationship. And we knew the day was coming when she would have to go back to the training center for the five-month professional guide-dog training. After that she would go to live with John, a blind man.
