When I was young, I had an old neighbor named Dr. Gibbs. He didn’t look like any doctor I’d ever known. He never shouted at us for playing in his yard. I remembered him as a neighbor who was nicer than anyone else in the neighborhood.
When Dr. Gibbs was happy, he was planting trees. And his life’s goal was to make it a forest.
Dr. Gibbs had some interesting theories about planting. He talked about trees that weren’t watered would grow deep roots in search of water. So he never watered his trees. He planted an oak (橡树) and, instead of watering it every morning, he beat it with the rolled-up newspaper. I asked him why he did that, and he said it was to get the tree’s attention.
Dr. Gibbs died a couple of years ago. Every now and again, I walk by his house and look at the trees that he planted twenty-five years ago. They’re very strong
now.
I planted a couple of trees a few years later. I watered them regularly and took good care of them. Whenever a cold wind blows, they shake their leaves and branches.
The funny thing about those trees of Dr. Gibbs was that difficulty seemed to help them in ways comfort and ease never could.

C. Difficulty is necessary for growth.
D. Planting trees is good for the environment.

Most of the time, people wear hats to protect themselves from harshweather conditions. Hats are also worn to show politeness and as signs of social position. But nowadays, hats, especially women’s hats, are much more than that. More exactly, hats have changed into fashion and style symbols by many movie stars. What’s more, people now consider many different features(特点) when choosing even a simple hat. Many designers point out that, when choosing the right hat, it’s important to consider the color of your skin as well as your hair, your height, and the shape of your face.
First of all, the color of the hat should match the color ofyour skin andhair. For example, black hats should be avoided if you aredark skinned. If a purple hat is placed on top of red hair, one willlook as attractive as a summer flower. Second, the height of the hat is alsoan important point.Tall women should not go for hats with tall crowns, just as short women should choose hats with upturned brims to give the look of height. Third, and most importantly, the shape of the face decides the kind of hat one should pick. A small, gentle hat that fits the head looks good on a small face. However, women with big, round faces should choose a different style.
As the saying goes, “Fine feathers make fine birds.” A goodhatcan not only helpyour dress but also support your features, so why not choose the best possible

There are many colors in nature. But do you know if a color has weight? I think you’ll say “no”. But I am afraid you are wrong. If you don’t believe, you may do a small experiment.
First, put two objects with the same weight into two boxes. Then cover the box. Third, wrap one box with a red piece of paper, the other with a white piece of paper. OK. Now hold the boxes with your hand one by one. It is certain that you will think the red one is a little heavier.
Why do you think so? A scientist found that different colors have different weight in a man’s mind. So he did many tests and at last he got the result. That is to say, every color has its own weight in our mind. The heaviest color is red, then blue, green, orange, yellow and white.
The scientist told us that colors also have smell. Can you smell the color?
Of course not. Then why did the scientist say so? That is because every color stands for a kind of light with a certain wavelength. It reaches our brain through sense organs(器官).
According to this discovery, scientists say that people accept the colors they like, and refuse the colors they hate. So your body and mind will be healthy by using the colors you like. Or you’ll be nervous or even get ill. For example, you like blue and hate red. If you stay in a room with red windows, wallpapers and furniture for two hours, you’ll feel you have been there for four hours. But if t he room is blue, you’ll feel you have been there for only an hour. And, if a person walks out of a blue room and into a red room, his temperature will raise. That means our body temperature will change with different colors.
32. The purpose of the second paragraph is to tell us _________.
A. the two boxes have the same weight
B. colors have different weights in people’s mind
C. colors can change the weight of an object
D. the red paper is heavier than the white paper
33. We can learn from the fourth paragraph that _________.
A. people can sense the light from colors
B. people can smell colors through the nose
C. the smell of colors is changeable
D. every color gives off light of the same length.
34. Which of the following is true?
A. red color is bad for our health.
B. people get nervous in a red room.
C. blue color can raise our body temperature.
D. colors can affect our mood and health.
35. This passage is probably _________.
A. a short novel

advertisement

Habits of Highly Successful Students
Never Over–Study
When you spend too much time studying, you will quickly lose focus and the time spent in studying will become “junk time”. You think you’re studying but you’re just sitting there re-reading the same sentence about 100 times and you’re not getting anywhere. 36 Taking breaks will make you energetic again. Besides, it will give your mind sometime to take in what you have been doing.
- -- 37
Top students don’t just randomly(随意地) sit down and complete work. They actually plan what they are going to do. They actually plan the time they will study and they set goals for what will be achieved. If you want to be successful, do as successful people do. Set a plan, a goal and stick to it, which will create a routine and a routine is the first step towards developing a habit. 38 .
Face up to the hardest work first
Many of us like to do the easy things first to build our confidence. That’s OK. The only challenge with this way is that you use up your primary energy at the start of any study period and when it comes the time to deal with the hard part your batteries will be low. So what happens then? 39 We all do it. We really shouldn’t, thoug h.
So develop the habit of giving your primary energy to the hard tasks and completing the easy stuff last.
40
Do we really have to explain this? Just turn them off for an hour. We promise the world will still be there when you log back in! Don’t text your friends, don’t chat while doing memory activities, don’t make phone calls, just focus on what you’re doing. Even if you focus on work for 15 minutes followed by 5 minutes of chatting, it’s better than 30 minutes of work while also chatting! You get that right?
A.Plan your study.
B.Put First Things First.
C.Instead, take regular breaks.
D.Positive habits decide future success.
E.You get tired and impatient and just give up.
F.Taking breaks can make you get everywhere.
G.Get off social networking sites and turn off the phone.
