Many cars in advertisements and on exhibition in the United States are red, blue or green, but almost 75 percent of new cars sold in the United States are black, white, silver orgray.
Les Jackson is a reporter who writes about cars. He says the color1 s of cars Americans choose do not show dirt. He says that means the owners wash their cars less in order to save money. And he notes some areas that are suffering from water shortages do not permit people to wash their cars often.
Dan Benton works for a company called Axalta, which makes supplies for international car makers. He says white cars are often sold more expensive than cars of other color1 s. And he notes that white cars “absorb(吸收)less energy” than cars of other color1 s. This means temperatures inside them are lower in warmer areas. Benton also says research at Monash University in Australia suggests that there is a lower risk of crashes during the day for white cars compared with darker ones.
Car buyers in other countries also like white. Jane Harrington works for PPG Industries, a company that makes paint for cars. She said in China, buyers say white makes a small car look bigger.
About 11 percent of cars sold in North America are red and 8 percent are blue. Green has become less popular. Benton notes that in the mid-1990s green was the most popular color1 in North America. Today, green is hard to find.
Sometime in the future, people may not have to choose the color1 of their cars —— technology may let owners change their cars’ paint color1 anytime.

D. Green cars were once popular in North America.
7. What does the text mainly tell us?

"Long time no see." is a very interesting sentence. When I first read this sentence from an American friend's e-mail, I laughed. I thought it was a perfect example of Chinglish.
Obviously, it is a word-by-word literal translation of the Chinese greeting with wrong English grammar and structure! Later on, my friend told me that it is a standard American greeting. I was too surprised to believe her. Her words were unbelievable at all. So I did research onGoogle. com. To my surprise, there are over 60 thousand web pages containing "Long time no see." Though it is sort of informal, it is part of the language that Americans use daily. Interestingly, if you type this phrase in Microsoft Word, the software will tell you that the grammar needs to be corrected.
Nobody knows the origin of this Chinglish sentence. Some people believe that it came from Charlie Chan's movies. In the 1930s, Hollywood moviemakers successfully created a worldwide famous Chinese detective named "Charlie Chan" on wide screens. Detective Chan liked to teach Americans some Chinese wisdom by quoting Confucius. "Long time no see." was his symbol. Soon after Charlie Chan, "Long time no see." became a popular expression in America thanks to the popularity of these movies.
Some scholars compare America to a hugemelting pot. All kinds of cultures are mixed in the pot together, and they change the colour and taste of each other. Language is usually the first thing to be influenced in the mixed pot.
You can have some examples from other countries such as pizza from Italian, sushi from Japanese, and déjà vu from French etc. There is a long list! Since Americans admire Chinese culture more and more nowadays, I believe more Chinese words will become American English in the future. In this way, the American's melting pot
keeps adding richness and flavour.
8. What did the writer himself feel surprised at?
A. The Chinglish expression "Long time no see."
B. So many literal translations of the expressions used in America.
C. "Long time no see." is used as a standard American English greeting.
D. Finding out Americans use the expression every day.
9. What do the underlined words "melting pot" in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Confucius's words.
B. Culture mixture.
C. A kind of cooked dish.
D. American changing cultures.
10. According to the passage, what can be inferred?
A. Detectives translated the phrase "Long time no see."
B. Cultures cannot be changed in the huge melting pot.
C. The huge melting pot greatly affects all kinds of languages.
D. Hollywood made "Long time no see." popular.
11. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Some Chinese expressions are introduced into English.
B. You'll not be surprised at a tofu and peanut butter hamburger in a restaurant in America.
C. Some American expressions can be used in China.
D. American English keeps being enriched by different cultures.

Following the Famous Silk Roads

A key section of the Silk Roads is the Chang’an-Tianshan corridor(走廊), whichstretchesover a distance of around 5,000 kilometres through China, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, covering a total of 8,700 kilometres of trade routes. The corridor began to develop in the 2nd century. Astronomy and mathematics were introduced toChinafromIndiaandArabia; important Chinese inventions such as papermaking and printing were brought to the West.
All of these activities contributed to a great age of expansion as trade and cultural exchanges gave people access to new goods, knowledge and ideas. These routes connected Eastern and Western civilizations, which achieved a shared development. The addition of the Chang’an-Tianshan corridor to the UNESCO World Heritage List is a milestone in recognition of the Silk Roads as a crucial part of humanity’s common heritage.

On a steamy morning in July, Clay and Acaimie Chastain arrived at the base of Mount Liamuiga on the Caribbean island of St.Kitts, ready to spend a day of their honeymoon climbing Mount Liamuiga. The highest point on St.Kitts, Liamuiga is also a dormant(休眠的)volcano that starts in the clouds and plunges down to meet the sea.
They couldn't find a visitor centre or hire a guide, so they set off on their own. They reached the peak around noon and ate their sandwiches looking out over the ocean and surrounding islands.
That's when Clay saw it: a small trail that led into the volcano's crater(坑), a bowl of green with cloud forest giving way to green grass.A series of screw eyes(螺钉孔)had been drilled into the rocks, with ropes that led down.Clay wanted to go down and take some pictures.Acaimie followed him a little way, but she was very
cautious and quite scared of heights;so Clay went on alone.
A few minutes later, she heard a crash——a noise that sounded like a large branch snapping, followed by the sound of something big rolling downhill."Clay?" she called.Silence.
Uneasy, she waited a minute and shouted again——still nothing. And then, from somewhere much further down, she heard a weak cry for help. This time she was certain: It was Clay calling for help from deep within the crater.
As she looked over the lip of the volcano, she tried to stop some of her worst worries. Her phone wasn't getting a signal, and her cries for help were met with only silence."Clay!" she shouted as loud as she could."Clay, are you OK?"
Acaimie grasped the rope and began climbing down the trail. When the path became too steep, she slid on her butt, her legs and arms getting bruised and scraped in the process. Then, just off the trail, she saw a flash of red.It was Clay's scarf. And next to it was his cell phone.
She grabbed both and continued down, screaming for Clay all the way.
"Help," he said in that strange voice.
"I'm coming! Stay where you are," she said.
