When I tole her my fears, she laughed and said ,“Don’t worry. The dentist is very good.”

China is a land of bicycles. At least it was back in 1992 when I traveled the country. Back then everyone seemed to be riding a bicycle. Millions of them, all black. Cars were rare. Yet since my arrival in Beijing last year, I’ve found the opposite is true. There are millions of cars. However, people still use their bicycles to get around. For many, it’s the easiest and cheapest way to travel today. Bicycles also come in different colors---silver, green, red, blue, yellow, whatever you want.
It’s fun watching people biking. They rush quickly through crossroads, move skillfully through traffic, and ride even on sidewalks(人行道). Bicycles allow people the freedom to move about that cars just can’t provide.
Eager to be part of this aspect of Chinese culture, I decided to buy a bicycle. Great weather accompanied my great buy. I immediately jumped up on my bicycle seat and started home.
My first ride home was orderly (守秩序的). To be safe, I stayed with a “pack” of bikers while cars on the streets came running swiftly out of nowhere at times. I didn’t want to get hit. So I took the ride carefully.
Crossing the streets was the biggest problem. It was a lot like crossing a major highway back in the United States. The streets here were wide, so crossing took time, skill and a little bit of luck.
I finally made it home. The feeling on the bicycle was amazing. The air hitting my face and going through my hair was wonderful. I was sitting on top of the world as I passed by places and people. Biking made me feel alive.
55. According to the author, why are bicycles still popular in China today?
A. Because they are convenient and inexpensive.
B. Because they are traditional and safe.

A. to ride it for fun
B.to experience local skills
C. to use it for transport
D. to improve his riding skills
57. How did the author feel about his street crossing?
A. It was boring.
B.It was wonderful.
C. It was lively.
D. It was difficult.
58. Which of the following best describes the author’s biking experience?
A. The author enjoyed showing off his biking skills.
B. The author was annoyed by the air while riding.
C. The author took great pleasure in biking.
D. The author was praised by the other bikers.

Sorry to say, our brains naturally start slowing down at the Cruelty young age of 30. It used to be thought that this couldn't be helped, but new studies show that people of any age can train their brains to work faster. "Your brain is a learning machine," says University of California scientist Dr. Michael Merzenich. Given the right tools, we can train our brains to act like they did when we were younger. All that's required is the practice designed just for the purpose: a few exercises for the mind.
Merzenich has developed a computer-based training method to speed up the process(进程) in which the brain deals with information (positscience). Since much of the data we receive comes through speech, the Brain Fitness Program works with language and hearing to better speed and accuracy (准确性).
Over the course of training, the program starts asking you to distinguish (分辨) sounds (between "dog" and "bog", for example) at an increasingly faster speed. It's a bit like tennis instructor, says Merzenich, hitting balls at you ~faster and faster to keep you challenged(受到挑战). You may start out slow, but before long you're pretty quick.
The biggest finding in brain research in the last ten years is that the brain at any age is highly plastic. If you ask your brain to learn, it will learn. And it may even speed up while in the process.
To keep your brain young and plastic you can do one of a million new activities that challenge and excite you: playing table tennis or bridge, doing crossword puzzles, learning a language.... "When it comes to preventing ageing, you really do 'use it or lose it' ," says Barbara Sahakian, professor at Cambridge University.
59. Dr. Merzenich’s training method mainly depends on ________.
A. the activities one joins in
B. computer languages
C. speech training
D. the information being dealt with
60. By saying "the brain at any age is highly plastic ", the writer probably means the brain can be______.
A. developed
B. mastered
ed
D. researched
61. What can we learn from the text?
A. Practice makes a quick mind.
B. People believed nothing could stop the brain slowing down.
C. Dr. Merzenich is a scientist in computer,
D. Brain research started ten years ago.
62. Which of the following agrees with the writer's idea?
A. The training methods work better for the old.
B. It's necessary to take part in as many activities as possible.
C. The training of the brain should start at an early age.
D. People should use the brain to stop it from ageing.

EP Portable Heater
We all know that the cost of heating our homes will continue to put economic pressure on the family life. Now millions of people are saving on their heating bills with the EP Portable Heater. With over one million satisfied customers around the world, the new EP heats better and faster, saves more on heating bills, and runs almost silent.
The EP has no exposed heating parts that can cause a fire. The outside of EP only gets warm to the touch so that it will not burn children or pets.
The EP will not reduce oxygen (氧气)in the room. With other heaters, you’ll notice that you get sleepy when the heat comes on because they are burning up oxygen.
The advanced EP also heats the room evenly, wall to wall and floor to ceiling. It comfortably covers an area up to 350 square feet. Other heaters heat rooms unevenly with most of the heat
concentrated to the center of the room. And they only heat an area a few feet around the heater. With the EP, the temperature will not vary in any part of the room.
The EP comes with a 3-year warranty(保修) and a 60-day. No questions asked. Satisfaction guarantee. If you are not totally satisfied, return it and your money will be given back to you.
Now, we have a special offer for 10 days, during which you can enjoy a half price discount and a free delivery(递送). If you order that, we reserve the right to either accept or turn down order requests at the discounted price.

The fiddler crab (蟹) is a living clock. It indicates(=shows) the time of day by the colour of its skin, which is dark by day and pale by night. The crab’s changing colour follows a regular twenty—four hour plan that exactly matches the daily rhythm (节拍) of the sun.
Does the crab actually keep time, or does its skin simply answer to the sun’s rays, changing colour according to the amount of light strikes it? To find out, biologists kept crabs in a dark room for two months. Even without daylight, the crab’s skin col our continued to change exactly on time.
This characteristic (特性) probably developed gradually in answer to the daily rising and setting of the sun, to help protect the crab from sunlight and enemies. After millions of years it has become completely regulated (受操纵) inside the living body of the crab.
The biologists noticed that once each day the colour of the fiddler crab is especially dark, and that each day this happens fifty minutes later than on the day before. From this they discovered that each crab follows not only the rhythm of the sun but also that of the tides (潮水). The crab’s period of greatest darkening is exactly the time of low tide on the beach where it was caught!
67. The fiddler crab is like a clock because it changes colour ______.
A at low tide
B. in answer to the sun’s rays
C. in a regular 24—hour rhythm
D. every fifty minutes
68. The crab’s changing colour ______.
A. protects the crab from the sunlight and enemies
B. tells the crab what time it is
C. keeps the crab warm
D. is of no real use
69. When the fiddler crabs were kept in the dark , they ______.
A. did not change colour
B. changed colour more quickly
C. changed colour more slowly
D. changed colour on the same timetable
70. The best title for this selection would be ______.
A. The Sun and the Tides
B. A Living Clock
C. A Scientific Study
D. Discoveries in Biology

第四部份:写作(共两节,总分值40分)
第一节阅读表达(共5小题;每题2分,总分值10分
阅读下面短文并回答下列问题,然后将答案写到答题卡相应的位置上(请注意问题后的词数要求)。

[1] Fishing is probably the world’s most popular sport. People spend many dollars each year on items like boats and four-wheel-drive vehicles. In addition, they spend money on fishing equipment , bait, fuel and boat repairs. And you can see that fishing can be an expensive pastime. Fishing lovers believe that their hobby is worth it. Others say that fishing is spoiling the environment and that it is a cruel hobby.
[2] Supporters of fishing say that it is a nice hobby. Firstly, of the millions of people who fish for
fun, most only catch enough fish to feed their families. They catch fish that are found in large numbers, so there is little danger to the species (种类).
[3] Secondly, recreational fishermen contribute to the economy. They spend money on equipment and other items, and they also spend it indirectly by paying taxes on their equipment and fuel. Those who travel to fishing spots pay for accommodation (食宿) and airfares. This money keeps people in work and provides new jobs each year.
[4] Thirdly, fishing is relaxing and fun so it lessens stress. Instead of turning to drugs or alcohol, it is far better to go fishing. People who are relaxed are generally healthier and much nicer to be near ----- except for the smell of the bait !
[5] Those who _________________ say that there are too many fish thoughtlessly taken form rivers, lakes, streams and oceans. This could lead to the dying out of some species. Modern cars and boats mean that people can fish in remote areas of the world, so no place is safe from greedy fishermen who take both males and females, leaving few fish to produce young.
[6] Those against fishing also say that it is a blood sport, which means that an animal must die so that a human can have fun. Many of the fish caught for sport are not suitable for eating, so they are thrown away. Once hooked (上钩), fish have no chance of escape.

Dear sir,
I’m a student of Senior 1. I’m writing to ask you for some advice.
Since last week, my parents and teachers have kept asking me to board in the school. They say it will be very convenient for me to ask questions whenever and wherever. Besides, they think boarding will make it possible to make full use of my night time, and that I can develop the ability to look after myself.
However, I have my own thoughts. If staying at home in the evening, I will have more time to work at my lessons. At the same time, I can learn what I think I’m not good at. I really don’t know how to deal with the disagreement between us. Can you give me your advice?
Yours,
Li Ming。
