Do you know the sun’s warmth is a kind of useful energy? Want to try using it yourself? Let’s do a cool project—making a solar tower!
You can try this project at home. You just need some tape, a pin (别针), paper, three cans and two big thick books. Now, we’re going to build the solar tower. First, make a pinwheel (纸风车) with a piece of square paper. In the second stage, cut off the tops and bottoms of the cans, place the cans on top of each other and tape them together. Next, use a pin to connect the pinwheel with the tower. Finally, put the can tower on top of the books, which are 5 cm apart from each other. So there’s a gap (间隔) at the bottom, allowing the air to enter the tower.
Now, all we have to do is to set the whole thing near a window where there’s direct sunlight. When the sun shines on the tower, it gets hot and warms the air in it. The warmer air moves upward through the tower and makes the pinwheel turn around as it passes by. Then cooler air comes in through the gap from the bottom of the tower, gets heated up, and rises, so the cycle goes on. This is how it works. How amazing!
So next time you feel the warm sun on your face, remember that it’s more than just a nice feeling—sunlight is a powerful and useful source of energy.

China now has more than 30,000 kilometers of high speed track (轨道), and this is expected to increase to 38,000 kilometers by 2025. Fully two thirds of the world’s high speed rail (by length) is in China.
While the main advantage of the high speed rail lines is the convenience for people to travel from one city to another as quickly as possible, some of these high speed lines have become popular tourist attractions. A good example of this is the Hefei-Fuzhou high speed line. Technically speaking, this was one of the most challenging high speed rail routes ever built. Nearly 90% of the track was laid either on bridges or in tunnels. However, the amazing views are worth it, as the train goes through some of China’s most beautiful mountainous areas, including Mount Huang and the Wuyi Mountain Ranges.
As China has gained skills and knowledge in high speed rail, it is trying to extend its technology to other countries. Its first project on the international market was the line connecting Istanbul with Türkiye’s capital, Ankara, 530 kilometers away.
This was followed by projects among other countries. Perhaps its most challenging project is a Trans-Asian Railway Network (泛亚铁路网) connecting China with Europe. Although it is difficult, China will make every effort to take on this plan. It is hoped to be completed by 2030 as a part of China’s “Belt and Road” Initiative. There is no doubt that high speed rail will bring the people of the country closer together, and in time bring about deep social changes.
41.How many kilometers of high speed track does China have now?
