Conventional wisdom says that hardship can make us old before our time. In fact, a new study suggests that violence not only leaves long-term scars on children’s bodies, but also changes their DNA, causing changes that are equal to seven to ten years of premature aging.
Scientists measured this by studying the ends of children’s chromosomes(染色体), called telomeres, says Idan Shalev, lead author of a study published in Molecular Psychiatry.
Telomeres(端粒) are special DNA sequences (基因序列)which prevent
the DNA in chromosomes from separating. They get shorter each time a cell divides, until a cell cannot divide any more and dies.
Several factors have been found to shorten telomeres, including smoking, radiation and psychological stresses such as being treated badly when young and taking care of a chronically(长期地) ill person.
In this study, researchers examined whether exposure to violence could make children’s telomeres shorten faster than normal. They interviewed the mothers of 236 children at ages 5, 7 and 10, asking whether the youngsters had been exposed to domestic violence between the mother and her partner; physical maltreatment by an adult; or bullying. Researchers measured the children’s telomeres—in cells obtained by swabbing the insides of their cheeks—at ages 5 and 10.
Telomeres shortened faster in kids exposed to two or more types of violence, says Shalev. Unless that pattern changes, the study suggests, these kids could be expected to develop diseases of aging, such as heart attacks or memory loss, seven to 10 years earlier than their peers.
Shalev says there is hope for these kids. His study found that, in rare cases, telomeres can lengthen. Better nutrition, exercise and stress reduction are three things that may be able to lengthen telomeres, he says.
The study confirms a small but growing number of studies suggesting that early childhood adversity imprints itself in our chromosomes, says Charles Nelson, a professor of pediatrics and neuroscience at Harvard Medical School.

Concussions(脑震荡) are brain injuries that occur when a person receives a blow to the head, face, or neck. Although most people may feel dizzy, sick and sleepy at first, these symptoms often disappear after a few days. The long-term effects of concussions, however, are less understood and far more severe. Recent studies suggest that people who suffer multiple concussions are at a significant risk for developing chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a brain disorder that causes a variety of dangerous mental and emotional problems to arise weeks, months, or even years after the initial injury. These psychological problems can include depression, anxiety, memory loss, inability to concentrate, and physical aggression. The majority of people who develop these problems are athletes who participate in popular high-impact sports, especially football. Although both new sports regulations and improvements in helmet technology can help protect players, the media and fans alike bear some of the responsibility for reducing the incidence of these destructive injuries.
Improvements in diagnostic technology have provided a lot of evidence to link severe-and often fatal-psychological disorders to the head injuries players receive on the field. In response to the growing understanding of this danger, the National Football League (NFL) has revised its safety regulations. Players who have suffered a head injury on the field must give a “concussion sideline assessment” –a series of mental and physical fitness tests-before being allowed back to the game. In an effort to reduce the amount of head and neck injuries on the field, NFL officials have begun enforcing stricter penalty calls for helmet-to-helmet contact, leading with the head, and hitting a defenseless player. Furthermore, as of 2010, if a player’s helmet is accidentally pulled off his head during a game, the ball is immediately whistled dead. There is hope that these new regulations, coupled with advances in helmet design, will reduce the number of concussions players
suffer, thus controlling the number of CTE cases.
Efforts by the NFL and other professional sports leagues are certainly praiseworthy; indeed, we should commend every attempt to protect the mental and physical health of players. However, new regulations at the professional level cannot protect amateur players, especially young people. With appropriate equipment and form, tackling (擒抱) need not be dangerous. Proper tackling form—using the arms and shoulders to aim for a player’s midsection(中间部分) rather than leading with the top of the head—should be taught at an early age. Youth, high school, and college leagues should also adopt safety rules even stricter than the NFL’s. Furthermore, at an early age, athletes should be educated about the serious dangers of head injuries.
Perhaps the most important factor in reducing the number of brain injuries, however, lies not with the players, the coaches, or the administrators, but with the media and fans. Sports media producers have been used to showing the most aggressive tackles and the most intense plays. NFL broadcasts often replay especially violent collisions, while the commentators admire the physical ability of the players involved. Some sports programs even feature the countdowns of the hardest hit. When the media focuses on such dangerous behavior, professionals are rewarded for injuring each other on the field, and amateurs become more likely to try to imitate their favorite NFL athlete. Announcers, commentator, television producers, and sportswriters should engage in a collective effort to stop glorifying violent plays. In turn, fans should stop expecting their favorite players to put their lives online for the purposes of entertainment. Players must stop being encouraged to trade their careers, health, happiness, and their lives for the sake of a game.

protecting players.

This is an excerpt from Emma Watson’s speech at the United Nations headquarters.
Today we are launching a campaign(called "He For She"). I am reaching out to you because we need your help. We want to end gender inequality, and to do this, we need everyone involved. This is the first campaign of this kind in the UN. We want to try to involve as many men and boys as possible to be advocates for change.
I started questioning gender-based assumption a long time ago. When
I was 8, I was confused being called bossy because I wanted to direct
a play that we put on for our parents, but the boys were not. When I was 14, I started to be sexualized by certain elements of the media. At 15, my girlfriends started dropping out of a lot of sports teams because they didn’t want to appear masculine. At 18, my male friends were unable to express their feelings.
I decided that I was a feminist. This seemed uncomplicated to me. But my recent research has shown me that feminism has become an unpopular word. Women are choosing not to identify as feminists. Why has the word become such an uncomfortable one? I’m from Britain and I think it is right that I am paid the same as my male counterparts. I think it is right that I should make decisions about my own body. I think it is right that women be involved on my behalf in the policies and decisions that will affect my life. I think it is right that socially, I am afforded the same respect as men.
But sadly, I can say that there is no one country in the world where all women can expect to receive these rights. No country in the world can yet say that they have achieved gender equality. These rights, I considered to be human rights, but I am one of the lucky ones.
My life is a sheer privilege because my parents didn’t love me less because I was born a daughter. My school did not limit me because I was a girl. My mentors didn’t assume that I would en d up nowhere because
I might give birth to a child one day. These influences were the gender equality ambassadors that made me who I am today. They may not know it but they are the inadvertent feminists who are changing the world today. We need more of those.
Men, I would like to take this opportunity to extend you a formal invitation. Gender equality is your issue, too. Because to date, I’ve seen young men suffering from mental illness, unable to ask for help for fear it will make them less of a man, or le ss of men. I’ve seen men made fragile and insecure by distorted sense of what constitutes male success. Men don’t have the benefits of equality, either. Both men and women should feel free to be sensitive, both men and women should be free to be strong. Th is is what "HeForShe" is about. It’s about freedom.
You might be thinking: who is this Harry Potter girl? What is she doing at the UN? I’ve been asking myself at the same thing. All I know is that I care about this problem and I want to make it better. And having seen what I’ve seen and given the chance, I feel my responsibility to say something. Statesman Edmund Burke said all that is needed for the forces of evil to triumph is for good men and women to do nothing. In my nervousness for this speech and in my moment of doubt, I told myself firmly: If not me, who? If not now, when? If you have similar doubts when opportunities are presented to you, I hope those words would be helpful. Because the reality is that if we do nothing, it will take 75 years, or for me it will be nearly 100 before women can be expected to be paid as same as men for the same work. 15.5 million girls will be married in the 16 years as children. At current rate, it will be until 2086 before all rural African girls can have secondary education. We are struggling for a uniting world, but the good news is we have a uniting movement. It is called “He For She”. I am inviting you to step forward, to be seen and to ask yourself: if not me, who? If not now, when?
Thank you.

Effective communication is a sign of strong and stable families while poor communication often causes families difficulties and conflicts, according to Virginia Tech. Understanding the features and the benefits of good family communication helps ensure positive and healthy relationships among family members.
Virginia Tech sees the clear family communication as clear direct and clear indirect communication. The former, the healthiest form of family communication, occurs when you clearly express a message to the correct family member. The latter refers to a message stated understandably but without a good indication of whom the message refers to.
Good listening is of great importance in family communication and it shows that you care and that you are concerned with the message being conveyed . At the same time, you should make constant eye contact and provide verbal feedback (反馈), such as “I see”. Rephrasing(改述)improves understanding and reduces confusion. To rephrase a message, you must listen carefully to the message, restate the message without adding extra information and check with the speaker to ensure the correct understanding. Probing refers to asking questions or making statements to identify the aspects of the message and reflect on the feelings it
conveys. Positive speaking requires you to focus on positive things and be willing to share more information related to the topic. This gives you the chance to express yourself, helps family members build positive self-images, and encourages cooperation.
Good family communication develops good relationships and leads to a better understanding, which help reduce anger and stress.
according to the University of Delaware, good family communication helps resolve conflicts within the family. Good communication also helps families stay strong by recognizing the need for compromise (折中).
There are some practical tips on improving the communication between the family members.
In order to increase availability, set aside a few minutes every day
to connect with your family members and discuss your days and anything disturbing you.
Being empathetic (感情移入的) means listening to the feelings of family members and showing your understanding.
Let the communication in the family be more than just verbal expression. Even the presence of family members are very important. For
example, the presence of parents conveys the messages of safety, love
and concern for the children. Use body language and gestures of affection generously in the communication. Even when you criticize or correct a child, holding him and talking to him in the most pleasing manner may help the messages to be accepted in the desired manner. Remember a kiss
or a hug can tell more than words can do.

“When should I begin to develop good habits?” a young boy asked his teacher.
“How old are you?” asked the teacher.
“Eight years old, sir.” answered the boy.
“Then you have just lost eight years,” the teacher replied.
There is no doubt that habits are formed at a very early age. When one is young, it is easy to gain good habits.
Good habits are practices that help us in our daily life. The habit of brushing one’s teeth in the morning, for example, keeps one’s teeth clean and prevents a bad smell which is unpleasant to others. Bad habits such as sticking one’s tongue out, biting one’s fingernails and picking one’s nose, a re unwelcome ways of behaving in front of others. If we want people to enjoy being with us, we should try to develop habits that are pleasant.
The habits we formed at an early age shape our character. Habits are like tributaries (细流) which flow into a river. The river is made up of all its tributaries; a person’s character is made up of all habits that he or she has developed over the years.
