For those who make journeys across the world, the speed of travel today has turned the countries into a series of villages.Distances between them appear no greater to a modern traveler than those which once faced men as they walked from village to village. Jet planes fly people from one end of the earth to the other, allowing them a freedom of movement undreamt of a hundred years ago.
Yet some people wonder if the revolution in travel has gone too far. A price has been paid, they say, for the conquest (征服) of time and distance. Travel is something to be enjoyed, not endured . The boat offers leisure and time enough to appreciate the ever-changing sights and sounds of a journey. A journey by train also has a special charm about it. Lakes and forests and wild, open plains sweeping past your carriage window create a grand view in which time
and distance mean nothing. On board a plane, however, there is just the blank blue of the sky filling the narrow window of the airplane. The soft lighting, in-flight films and gentle music make up the only world you know, and the hours progress slowly.
Then there is the time spent bei ng “processed” at a modern airport. People are conveyed like robots along walkways; baggage is weighed, tickets produced, examined and produced yet again before the passengers move to another waiting area. Journeys by rail and sea take longer, yes, but the hours devoted to being “processed” at departure and arrival in airports are luckily absent. No wonder, then, that the modern high-speed trains are winning back passengers from the airlines.
Man, however, is now a world traveler and cannot turn his back on the airplane. The working lives of too many people depend upon it; whole new industries have been built around its design and operation. The holiday maker, too, with limited time to spend, patiently endures the busy airports and limited space of the flight to gain those extra hours and even days, relaxing in the sun. speed controls people’s lives; time saved, in work or play, is the important thing—or so we are told. Perhaps those first horsemen, riding free across the wild, open plains, were enjoying a better world than the one we know today. They could travel at will, and the clock was not their master.
25.What does the writer try to express in Paragraph 1?
A.Travel by plane has speeded up the growth of villages.
B.The speed of modern travel has made distances relatively short.
C.The freedom of movement has helped people realize their dreams.
D.Man has been fond of traveling rather than staying in one place.
26.How does the writer support the underlined statement in Paragraph 2?
A.By giving instructions.
B.By analyzing cause and effect.
C.By following the order of time.
D.By giving examples.
27.According to Paragraph 3, passengers are turning back to modern high-speed trains because______.
A.they pay less for the tickets
B.they feel safer during the travel
C.they can enjoy higher speed of travel
D.they don’t have to waste time being “processed”
28.What does the last sentence of the passage mean?
A.They could enjoy free and relaxing travel.
B.They needed the clock to tell the time.
C.They preferred traveling on horseback.
D.They could travel with their master.
C
With only about 1, 000 pandas left in the world, China is desperately trying to clone(克隆) the animal and save the endangered species(物种). That’s a move similar to what a Texas A & M University researchers have been undertaking for the past five years in a project called “Noah’s Ark”.
Noah’s Ark is aimed at collecting eggs, embryos(胚胎), semen and DNA of endangered animals and storing them in liquid nitrogen(氮). If certain species should become extinct, Dr. Duane Kraemer, a professor in Texas A & M’s College of Veterinary Medicine, says there
would be enough of the basic building blocks to reintroduce the species in the future.
It is estimated that as many as 2, 000 species of mammals, birds reptiles will become extinct in over 100 years. The panda, native only to China, is in danger of becoming extinct in the next 25 years.
This week, Chinese scientists said they grew an embryo by introducing cells from a dead female panda into the egg cells of a Japanese white rabbit. They are now trying to implant the embryo into a host animal.
The entire procedure could take from three to five years to complete.
“The nuclear trans fer(核子移植) of one species to another is not easy, and the lack of available(capable of being used) panda eggs could be a major problem,” Kraemer believes. “They will probably have to do several hundred transfers to result in one pregnancy (having a baby). I t takes a long time and it’s difficult, but this could be groundbreaking science if it works. They are certainly not putting any live pandas at risk, so it is worth the effort,” adds Kraemer, who is one of the leaders of the Project at Texas A& M, the first-ever attempt at cloning a dog.
“They are trying to do something that’s never been done, and this is very similar to our work in Noah’s Ark. We’re both trying to save animals that face extinction. I certainly appreciate their effort and there’s a lot we can learn from what they are attempting to do. It’s a resea rch that is very much needed.”
29.The aim of “Noah’s Ark” project is to _______.
A. make efforts to clone the endangered pandas

30.According to Professor Kraemer, the major problem in cloning pandas would be the lack of _______.
A.available panda eggs
B. host animals
C.qualified researchers
D. enough money
31.The best title for the passage may be _______.
A.China’s Success in Pandas Cloning.
B.The First Cloned Panda in the World.
C.Exploring the Possibility to Clone Pandas.
D.China —the Native Place of Pandas Forever.
32.From the passage we know that _______.
A. Kraemer and his team have succeeded in cloning a dog.
B. scientists try to implant a panda’s egg into a rabbit.
C. Kraemer will work with Chinese scientists in clone researches.
D. about two thousand of species will probably die out in a century.

选项中有两项为多余选项。

Reading books can be a great way to pick up new vocabulary, see grammar in action and develop your understanding of a language. 36
For beginners, I would recommend starting with something short and simple. Avoid the classics, for they often use very old English words and can involve complex themes. Children's books are a great place to start. 37 .Dr Seuss writes his books in thyme and they are all very funny. Starting with something like this means you are more likely to finish the book and want to read more.
38 The book isn't too long and if you've seen the film it may be easier to follow. If you like re ading about historical events, Anne Holm’s I am David is a good read.
If y ou're not quite ready to read a full book, why not try Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes?
39 Or, try a very short book like one from Roger Hargeaves's Mr Men and Little Miss series. Although they are intended for young children, they are a good way to pick up some more basic vocabulary.
My final piece of advice would be to read something that interests you. Look at the short summary of the book on the back cover and see if it looks like something that you would enjoy. Think about the type that is in your own language and find one of that type in English.
40 .
A. Dr Seuss's books are guaranteed to make you laugh.
B. The key to success is choosing the right book for you.
C. Reading can bring you a lot of fun as well as knowledge.
D. For more advanced learners, you could try the Hobbit by J.R.R.Tolkien.
E. This way, you're more likely to enjoy reading, rather than see it as a headache.
F. How much you can understand a book depends on your vocabulary.
G. This book contains lots of short stories, based on fairy tales, all written in thyme.

Were you the first or the last child in your family? Or were you a middle or an only child? Some people think 61 matters where you were born in your family. But there are different ideas about what birth order means. Some people say that the oldest children, 62 are smart and strong-willed, are very likely 63 (succeed). The reason 64 this is simple. Parents have a lot of time for their first child and give him or her a lot of attention. An only child will succeed for 65 same reason.
What happens to the 66 children in the family? Middle children don’t get so much attention, so they don’t feel that important. If a family has many children, the middle one sometimes gets lost in the crowd. The youngest child, 67 , often gets special treatment. Often this child grows up to be funny. But a recent study saw things quite 68 (difference). The study found that first c hildren believed in family rules. They didn’t take many chances in 69 lives. They usually 70 (follow) orders.
