A
Bird migration is described as the regular, seasonal movement of bird populations from one place to another and back again.
The longer days and rich food of the northern summer provide greater chances for birds to feed their young. The longer daylight hours and enormous food resources allow birds to lay larger eggs than those of related non-migratory species that remain in the tropics all year round. As the days shorten in autumn and the breeding period is over, the birds return to warmer regions where the available food supply differs little with the seasons changing. The advantages of migration make up for the high stress, physical exertion(消耗), and other risks of the migration.
Day length is the primary environmental factor that encourages birds to prepare for migration. They have an increased appetite which results in weight gaining, giving them the fat reserves that provide energy for their migratory flight. They also show more activity at night, which is when most birds migrate. While the length of day is the primary reason for migration, birds also respond to temperature changes. For example, if a spring is late and the temperature is lower than normal, birds delay migration; if a spring is early, birds also begin migration early.
The timing of the migratory cycle must allow birds to arrive on the breeding site so that there is time tobuild a breeding place, mate, lay the eggs, and hatch the young before the rich food is available to feed the young in the nest. Similarly, if birds wait until the climate in their northern breeding grounds becomes tolerable(可忍受的), there will be no time togain the necessary weight that provides the energy needed for their southbound migration.

A Singaporean company will feed airport food waste to mealworms before turning them into fish feed, aiming to cut the country's use of imported feed and offer a continuous alternative.
Blue Aqua Internationalwill partner with Dnata, an air and travel services provider, to change organic waste at Singapore's Changi Airport into insect protein for aquacultural use, according to a statement Tuesday.
The project looks to replace traditional fish and soybean meal as the main sources of protein for aquafeed. The insects will eat the food waste and change it into part of the body containing about 60 per cent protein. The dried baby worms will then be made into feed.
These mealworms can be a continuous solution to several problems. Using a small land and giving out less carbon, they turn food waste into feed and offer an alternative source of protein. Ynsect SAS, a small French business that keeps mealworms to feed fish and pets, attracted money from investors includingIron Manmovie actor Robert Downey Jr. in a round of fund-raising last year.
The deal will give Singapore's farmers access to domestically produced animal feed, which is traditionally bought from abroad. The Southeast Asian nation imports more than 90 percent of its food and has set a goal to produce a third of its food locally by 2030. It also aims to achieve a general recycling rate of 70 per cent by then. Presently, less than 20 per cent of Singapore's food waste is recycled.
As part of the partnership, Dubai-based Dnata will add Blue Aqua to its list of suppliers to buy locally farmed seafood for its catering service.
4. What is the function of mealworms?
A. To cut the use of imported fish feed.
B. To eat food waste and make fish feed.
C. To domestically produce animal feed.
D. To replace traditional fish and soybean meal.
5. What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. The producers of the feed.

6. What can we infer about Singapore from Paragraph 5?
A. It is a rich country.
B. It is short of self-produced food.
C. Its recycling rate is very high now.
D. Its farmers don't support the deal.
7. What is the text mainly about?

After finishing his dinner, Lin Xu opened a WeChat mini-program called "Clear Plate" on his phone and took picture of the empty plates. He was then awarded 157 credit points after the image was uploaded and recognized by artificial intelligence.
“Users of the app can use their credit to buy gifts, such as books and cellphones to purchase charity meals donated to children in poor rural areas,” Lin said.
A nationwide "Clear Your Plate" campaign is gaining steam online. Efforts to stop food waste and promote thrift are also being made by restaurants that have been urged to create an environment in which consumers are reminded not to waste food. They are also encouraged to offer different portion sizes so that customers can have more choices.
The “Clear Plate” mini-program has become popular among young Chinese and currently has nearly 1 million users.
Liu Jichen, founder of the startup that developed the app, said that the idea popped up at a dinner in 2017, when Liu found that a restaurant would give diners who polished off their food a card and offer small gifts after a certain number of cards had been collected.
“Such an idea can be realized online,” Liu said. He formed a team to work on the project.
Yet it was quite challenge for the AI system to identify whether the uploaded photos showed empty plates.
To make the AI system smarter, Liu and his team, assisted by more than 1,000 others, spent half a year collecting over 100, 000 samples in canteens and restaurants across the country and used the data to train neural network. Dozens of enterprises, institutions and restaurants have contacted the startup to cooperate on the project.
Through the visualized mini-program, people can clearly see the good results of saving food, which will
effectively reduce waste, he noted. "We hope our efforts can start a new trend among the younger generation, encouraging them to carry out the virtue of cherishing food and developing the habit of thrift, " Liu said
8. What is the main function of the APP "Clear Plate?
A. Awarding credit points.
B. Giving charity meals.
C. Showing the empty plates.
D. Encouraging saving food.
9. How is the "Clear Your Plate" campaign carried out?
A. Customers wasting food are punished.
B. People join in it on mini-program.
C. Restaurants limit customers' choices.
D. People are encouraged to buy gifts.
10. What was the most difficult when the app was created?
A. Getting other people to cooperate with the team.
B. Collecting samples in canteens and restaurants.
C. Ensuring the app to recognize empty plates.
D. Finding people to fund the app.
11. What is the purpose of the writing?
A. To introduce an app.
B. To promote saving food.
C. To praise a startup founder.
D. To raise fund for poor children.

British anthropologists (人类学家) Russell Hill and Robert Barton of the University of Durham, after studying the results of one-on-one boxing, tae kwon do, Greco-Roman wrestling and freestyle wrestling matches at the Olympic Games, conclude that when two competitors are equally matched in fitness and skill, the athlete wearing red is more likely to win.
Hill and Barton report that when one competitor is much better than the other, colour has no effect on the result. However, when there is only a small difference between them, the effect of colour is enoughtipthe balance. The anthropologists say that the number of times red wins is not simply by chance, but that these results are statistically significant.
Joanna Setchell, a primate (灵长目动物) researcher at the University of Cambridge, has found similar results in nature. She studies the large African monkeys known as mandrills. Mandrills have bright red noses that stand out against their white faces. Setchell’s work shows that the powerful males — the ones who are more successful with females — have a brighter red nose than other males.
As well as the studies on primates by Setchell, another study shows the effect of red among birds. In an experiment, scientists put red plastic rings on the legs of male zebra finches and this increased the birds’ success
with female zebra finches, Zebra finches already have bright red beaks (鸟喙), so this study suggests that, as with Olympic athletes, an extra flash of red is significant. In fact, researchers from theUniversityofGlasgowsay that the birds’ brightly coloured beaks are an indicator of health. Jonathan Blount, a biologist, andhis colleagues think they have found proof that bright red or orange beaks attract females because they mean that the males are healthier. Nothing in nature is simple, however, because in species such as the blue footed booby, a completely different colour seems to give the male birds the same advantage with females.
Meanwhile, what about those athletes who win in their events while wearing red? Do their clothes give them an unintentional advantage? Robert Barton accepts that “that is the implication” of their findings. Is it time for sports authorities to consider new regulations on sports clothing?
12. According to their research. Hill and Barton conclude that ________.
A. the colour of clothing has an effect on most sport events
B. red should be the choice of colour for clothing in sports
C. red plays a role when competitors are equally capable
D. athletes perform better when surrounded by bright red
13. The underlined word “tip” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to ________.
A. achieve
B. advance
C. keep
D. change
14. The example of the blue footed booby proves that ________.
A. male birds use different body parts to draw attention
B. red is not the only colour to attract female birds
C. blue gives female birds the same advantage
D. blue can indicate how healthy a bird is
15. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. The colour red gives male animals the most advantage.
B. Male zebra finches prefer to have red plastic rings on their legs.
C. Rules on sports clothing are going to be changed.
D. Athletes wearing red may have an advantage over their opponents.

When I was five years old, we lived in a small town in theMidwestin an old yellow house with a stream out back. On summer days, I used to play with a neighbor girl named Marie, who was two years older. She would take my hand and lead me down to the stream, where I could lie on the bank and stare at the muddy water. On one such day I was sitting on the bank, with my dirty toes in the soft warm mud, when Marie took something from the pocket of her overalls. It was a little boat, made of paper.
“Papa made this for me,” she boasted. I stared at it, immediately wishing that I had an equally fine object to show. I had nothing in my pocket but a small plastic truck with only three wheels.
Marie placed her boat in the water. Then, the current took hold of it and swirled it downstream. “See?” Marie said in excitement. “See my canoe drifting down the stream? After a while that little stream will turn into a bigger stream and it will go a little faster. Then that stream will turn into an even bigger stream, and the streams will keep getting bigger and bigger until finally it will reach a big river, and it will go faster and faster, and then it will come out in the ocean.”
“Have you ever seen the ocean, Willy?” she inquired softly, inclining her head so that her bright brown eyes looked straight into mine.
I looked down at my muddy toes and shook my head no.
“At the ocean,” Marie explained, “water reaches for miles and miles, as far as you can see, and it’s deep water, dark blue and green.”
“And there’s sailing ships that go on the ocean, where you can get on, and sail for days and weeks and months, until you get all the way toChina.”
“Pretend that canoe is a real boat, Willy,” she whispered. “You and I could get in that boat and sail all the way to the ocean.” She looked out at the stream, disappearing around a stand of trees.
