高二英语任务型阅读试题
1. Young people are definitely less courageous (勇敢的) than they were 30 years ago. Why is this? It’s because they are spoiled, and take for granted everything that they have or are given. Thirty years ago, there wasn’t nearly as much blatant (公然的) disrespect for elders, peers, or other people in general. At that time, young people were taught that to get anything or get anywhere in life, they’d have to work for it and earn it.
If young peop le aren’t being taught the basics of respecting others, and aren’t being taught that they need to work to make a living, then where are they to learn courage?
Courage isn’t necessarily about risking your life, for whatever reason. It is about being able to face any kind of hardship, and to make decisions and face the consequences of those decisions. Courage means being able to learn from hard times, and to take those lessons with you through life. It means having the resourcefulness (足智多谋) to find ways to deal with your problems yourself, and not being afraid to do so.
Too many young people now rely on parents, siblings, older relatives and others to get them through life. Too often they turn to these figures whenever they get into trouble, and expect to have their problems solved for them.
If we are to help our young people become more courageous, we should stop spoiling them, stop doing everything for them, and teach them the skills necessary to make basic life decisions on their own.
Once these basic principles are instilled (灌输) in our young people, I think we’ll find that they are more courageous than we could have dreamed, and more like the young people of thirty years ago than we had ever imagined.
It’s time to go back to older values and ideas, and to bring courage back into our young people and society.
【答案】brought
【解析】结论就是文章最后一段,只是这里用了一般过去时,所以填bring的过去式brought。

2. Are people less happy or more happy the older they get? If you answered more happy, then you were right, based on a study published two years ago. It found that people generally become happier and experience less worry after age fifty. In fact, it found that by the age of eighty-five, people are happier with their life than they were at eighteen.
The findings came from a Gallup survey of more than three hundred forty thousand adults in the United States in 2008. At that time, the people were between the ages of eighteen and eighty-five.
Arthur Stone in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Stony Brook University in New York led the study. His team found that levels of stress were highest among adults between the ages of 22 and 25. Stress levels dropped sharply after people reached their fifties. Happiness was highest among the youngest adults and those in their early seventies. But the people least likely to report negative emotions were those in their seventies and eighties.
The survey also found that men and women have similar emotional patterns as they grow older. However, women at all ages reported more sadness, stress and worry than men did.
The researchers also considered possible influence like having young children, being unemployed or being single. But they found that influences like these did not affect the levels of happiness and well-being related to age.
So why would happiness increase with age? One theory is that, as people get older, they become more thankful for all that they have and have better control of their emotions. They also spend less time thinking about bad experiences.
Happiness is not the only thing that apparently improves with age. In a study published this year, people in their eighties reported the fewest problems with the quality of their sleep. Researchers surveyed more than 150,000 American adults. The study, led by Michael Grander at the University of Pennsylvania, appeared in the journal Sleep.
The original goal was to confirm the popular belief that aging is connected with increased sleep problems. The survey did find an increase during middle age, especially in women. But except for that, people reported that they felt their sleep quality improved as they got older.

4. Stress for a teenager is as real a problem as stress for an adult. To d eal with it, it’s important
to understand the causes of stress in teenagers.
When parents change their jobs or if the family decides to move to a different place, the child
has to change schools, find new friends, adapt to the new social circle and fit into new groups. It is always difficult for children to adapt to such changes, which can be a serious cause of stress
in their life.
Academic difficulties, such as inability to understand a certain subject can cause stress. Not every child has the ability to understand every subject. Some kids need extra help besides school work to grasp a few concepts. Poor academic performance is often laughed at and is looked down upon by both teachers and peers. In such cases, it can make the child feel isolated, neglected and hurt. All of this, put together, can add to stress, which many times worsens grades.
Extra curricular activities (课外活动) such as playing a sport, or attending art classes can weigh heavily on your child’s mind. Juggling between school and extra curricu lar activities does seem like a burden when you have to excel at both. When the pressures from both the ends get unmanageable, teenagers tend to get tired and annoyed. Fatigue sets in, leading to stress related issues such as lack of concentration in school.
These are the common causes of stress in teenagers, which can be noticed through signs such as poor memory, anxiety, negative and pessimistic attitude. If the signs of teenage stress go unrecognized for a long time, it can make the child emotinally imbalanced.

5.In today’s world, over 7,000 different languages are spoken. English is one of the most recognized languages in the world and is the language of choice for many people across the globe. For this reason it plays a significant role in communication between different societies and organizations. It is important that global workers can effectively use this style of English in order to be successful in the world business markets.
Global English, also known as international English, is the movement towards using an international standard for this common language. It is also the concept of using the English language to communicate across the wo rld and in various dialects. In today’s society of constant communication among people around the world, it is important that the English language is not tied to one local dialect such as the United States, the UK or Australia, but rather represents a broad usage of language so that it can be understood in all countries. When using global English, it is important to write and speak clearly so it can be understood around the world.
There are a variety of techniques that can be adopted to successfully use global English. Avoid sentences and paragraphs which are long and wordy. Try not to use false subjects, such as sentences that start with “It is” or “This has” which can be confusing. Instead, start the sentence with a specific descriptive subject.
Do not use mini word clusters (串) because they may confuse anyone who is just learning the English languages. Mini words are short, common words with one-to-three letters. Avoid using idioms, such as “the tip of the iceberg” and “right around the corner”. Instead, s ay exactly what you mean. Also, because many languages do not use pronouns such as “it” or “they”, try to avoid them. Avoid using phrasal verbs, such as “keep up” or “get into” because they aren’t easy to understand in some languages. Finally, since most languages have different formats for writing dates, it is best to write out the month, date and year completely.
In a word, it is important to read and write global English. By understanding the concepts of global English and using proper techniques, a business can successfully grow in the global business economy.

7.We’ve all done it at one point or another. You’re driving along to work or school when that familiar sound reaches your eardrums(耳膜). You look down, reach into your pocket and begin
to read, your steering wheel(方向盘) in one hand, your phone in the other. As you respond to
that text message from your friend, you look intermittently(间歇地) at the road, and then back down at your phone. You’ve done it plenty of times before. What can go wrong?
What do you think is the number one killer of teenagers in the U.S.? Drugs? Alcohol? Violence? The answer is distracted driving. According to the National Safety Council, over 24 percent of all motor vehicle crashes involve cell phone use. Either a quick 30-second phone call or a simple text reading may be the cause of a traffic accident. In addition, drivers who talk on a cell phone, whether hands-free or not, are four times more likely to crash.
The risk of teenagers getting into an accident rises sharply. According to , more than 3,000 teenagers die in car accidents each year with about another 450,000 teenagers being injured. Additionally, according to a University of Utah study, reading or
sending even one text message is equal to having a 0.08 alcohol level. In most states, that is considered as drunk-driving.
So, how do you prevent yourself from the danger of distracted driving? The answer is simpler than you might think. Put your phone away. Mute(消音) your phone or just turn it off while driving. If you still can’t h elp reaching for your phone, throw it on the backseat. This way, you won’t be able to get to it until you arrive at your destination.
You may get away with talking on the phone now, but there may be a day when you don’t. Dropping your phone may be an incon venience, but it’s better than being a victim of your distracted driving.
【答案】convenient
【解析】词义归纳题:从最后一段的句子:Dropping your phone may be an inconvenience,可知把inconvenience,改成convenient

Children who grow up with self-control and an understanding of others’ needs will be happy and successful adults, according to Dr. Cleen Kelly Mast, an expert on children’s health. The key to raising a successful child comes from realizing what is true happiness.
For a person to be truly happy, he or she should learn to form the habits of self-discipline and generosity (慷慨). Parents must help their children to reach this point by emphasizing the development of virtue and the advantage of forming good habits. “We have wonderful support systems through our schools,” Dr. Mast said, “but they are just support systems. The school cannot make up for what is lacking at home.” According to Dr. Mast, family life is well suited to educate children in virtuous living and the dev elopment of what she calls a “fine-tuned” conscience, which brings happy feeling.
So how can busy parents help children fine-tune their consciences? Dr. Mast suggested parents stop blaming and criticizing and teach children the skills of self-discipline through concrete actions.
However, a parent’s good example is not enough. Children must become involved in their own development. Parents can help to achieve that by making children realize that they are responsible for their actions in difficult situations, and they can choose to stop protecting them from painful experiences as well. Good discipline is not just making children follow their parents’ demands. “We parents must encourage them with more than ‘Because I said so.’” said Dr. Mast. Besides, orderliness and organization are quite important for children to achieve self-discipline. In a broad sense, humans are designed to love, and love involves sacrifice, which is not a quite popular idea in the modern world. Parents need to work on developing their chi ldren’s habits of generosity and kindness to others. “Help your child, and yourself, to think kind thoughts of others, while pushing out negative thoughts.” said Dr. Mast. She also suggested parents find
out their children’s nature by analyzing the way the y react to situations or to other people. And it is also considered effective to have them develop the habit of reviewing the day nightly, with a focus on correcting their own particular faults.
But life is not all work and no play. All have the right to enjoy life. As parents, it is your duty to help your children form good habits and let them have fun while working hard, which will result
in success when they grow up.

10. There are so many good reasons to send a child to camp.
When children go to camp, they are on their own, sometimes for the very first time in their lives. They have to decide what to wear, what to eat and which activities to participate in. As a result they develop confidence and independence.
As self-respect develops from learning to be on their own, children continue to try new activities. Also it is possible that they will engage in what they are unfamiliar with. In school, children do not experience success in the same way. Camp can be a school without failure because just having fun makes them a success.
One of the greatest benefits of a camp experience is that children develop social skills. In a camp setting, a good counselor will make sure that every camper is included in the activity and that each child interacts with the others in a positive way. They learn the give and take, and they learn how to work and cooperate. Something as simple as clean-up, is not only there to get the cabin clean, but to promote a team atmosphere of working together which in turn results in friendship.
The obvious benefit of camp is that campers make long lasting friendships. These friendships can often be unique and special because campers are living with each other and see the true personalities. Children learn to see others from a different viewpoint. Children tend to be accepted for who they are and do not have to be concerned about what they wear, what they are good at and how they look. This is because in a camp setting, respect and caring finally win out over materialistic objectives.
In a word, camp does give children fun, friends and fulfillment.

The standard of living of any country means the average person's share of the goods and services which the country produces. A country’s standard of living, therefore, depends first and foremost on its ability to produce wealth. "Wealth" in this sense is not money, for we do not live on money but on things that money can buy, “goods” such as food and clothing, and "services" such as transport and entertainment.
A country's ability to produce wealth depends upon many factors, most of which have an effect on one another. Wealth depends to a very large degree upon a country's natural resources, such as coal, gold, and other minerals, water supply and so on. Some regions of the world are well supplied with coal and minerals, and have a fertile (肥沃的)soil and a favorable climate; other regions possess perhaps only one of these things, and some regions possess none of them. The USA is one of the wealthiest regions of the world because she has vast natural resources within her borders(边疆), her soil is fertile, and her climate is of great variety. The Sahara Desert, on the other hand, is one of the least wealthy.
Next to natural resources comes the ability to turn them to use. Sound and stable (稳定
的)political conditions, and freedom from foreign invasion(侵略), enable a country to develop its natural resources peacefully and steadily, and to produce more wealth than another country equally well served by nature but less well ordered.
Another important factor is the technical efficiency(效能) of a country's people. Old countries that have, through many centuries, trained up numerous(无数的) skilled craftsmen and technicians are better placed to produce wealth than countries whose workers are largely unskilled.
Wealth also produces wealth. As a country becomes wealthier, its people have a large
margin(富余)for saving, and can put their savings(储蓄) into factories and machines which will help workers to turn out more goods in their working day.

American public education has changed in recent years. One change is that increasing numbers of American parents and teachers are starting independent public schools called charter schools.
In 1991, there were no charter schools in the Unite States. Today, more than 2300 charter schools operate in 34 states and the District of Columbia. 575000 students attend these schools. The students are from 5 years of age through 18 or older.
A charter school is created by groups of parents, teachers and community members. It is similar in some ways to a traditional public school. It receives tax money to operate a number of students. The charter school must prove to local or state governments that its students are learning. These governments provide the school with the agreement, or charter that permits it to operate.
Unlike a traditional public school, however, the charter school does not have to obey most laws governing public schools. Local, state or federal governments cannot tell it what to teach.
Each school can choose its own goals and decide the ways it wants to reach those goals. Class。
