IV.阅读理解:(每⼩题2分,共15 ⼩题,满分30分)
A
In most languages, a greeting is usually followed by “small talk”. Small talk means the little things we talk about at the start of a conversation. In English-speaking countries people often make small talk about the weather: “Nice day, isn’t it?” But there is something special about small talk. It must be about something which both people have the same opinion about. The purpose of small talk is to let both people agree on something. This makes meeting people easier and comfortable. People usually agree about the weather, so it is a safer topic for small talk. But people often disagree about religion or politics so these are not suitable topics for small talk in English. The topics for small talk also depend on where the conversation is taking place. At football matches, people make small talk about the game they are watching: “Great ga me, isn’t it?” At bus stops, people may comment about the transport system: “The bus service is terrible, isn’t it?”
Greetings and small talk are an important part of conversation in any language. The way people greet each other and the things they talk about,
however, may be different from one language to another. This shows that there is much more to learn when we learn a language than just the vocabulary and the grammar of the language. We also have to learn the social behavior of the people who speak it.

Twenty years ago, I drove A a taxi for a living. One night I went to pick up a passenger at 2:30 AM. When I arrived to collect, I found the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window.
I walked to the door and knocked, “Just a minute,” answered a weak, elderly voice.
After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her eighties stood before me. By her side was a small suitcase.
I took the suitcase to the car, and then returned to help the woman. She took my arm and we walked slowly toward the car. She kept thanking me for my kindness. “It’s nothing,” I told her. “I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my moth er treated.”
“Oh, you’re such a good man.” She said. When we got (please visit /doc/3a761763.html
) into the taxi, she gave me an address, and then asked, “Could you drive through downtown?”
“It’s not the shortest way,” I answered quickly.
“Oh, I’m in no hurry,” she said. “I’m on my way to a hospice(临终医院). I don’t have any family left. The doctor says I don’t have very long.”
I quietly reached over and shut off the meter(计价器).
For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the
building where she had once worked, the neighborhood where she had lived, and the furniture shop that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl.
Sometimes she’d ask me to slow down in front of a par ticular building and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing.
At dawn, she suddenly said,” I’m tired. Let’s go now.”
We drove in silence to the address she had given me.
“How much do I owe you?” she asked.
“Nothing.” I said.
“You have to make a living,” she answered. “Oh, there are other passengers,” I answered.
Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held onto e tightly. Our hug ended with her remark, “You gave an old

There is an old saying that “in this world nothing is certain but death and taxes (税收).”Many people today would agree with this statement. Even the people who lived more than four thousand years ago in ancient Egypt might agree!
Egyptian tomb paintings depict scenes from daily life. In a tomb dating back to about 2400 B.C., scenes show tax collectors at work, including handing out punishment for failure to pay taxes.
When the ancient Romans began to rule Egypt in 300 B.C., taxation grew worse. The Romans kept careful records of every taxpayer --- and they recorded all births, making sure that no future taxpayer escaped. The Romans taxed everything they could think of --- land, crops, goods. A tax was paid on every
animal a person owned. People paid taxes to work at a trade of craft. Males between the ages of fourteen and sixty paid a tax just for being male.
So when you hear people complain about taxes today, you can tell them that they’re lucky they didn’t live in ancient times.
69. The best title for this passage could be ____________.
A. Egypt ruled by the Romans
B. Hard life in ancient Egypt
C. Taxes in ancient Egypt
D. Cruelty of tax collectors
70. The passage is intended to tell the readers that ____________.

CHENGDU, China (Reuters) - The onset of the rainy season is swelling dangerous "quake lakes" and compounding the difficulties of reconstruction after China's worst earthquake in decades.
The 7.9 magnitude tremor of May 12 and thousands of aftershocks changed the landscape of northern Sichuan province forever, blocking rivers, weakening mountain walls and creating unstable lakes where there was once dry land.
The death toll had topped 55,000, with almost 25,000 missing and more than 281,000 injured, Sichuan vice governor Li Chengyun said on Friday as fears grew that disease, rain and aftershocks could bring yet more disaster to the southwestern province.
A landslide triggered by an aftershock in Wenchuan county, at the epicenter (震中), on Thursday crushed a house, killing two people, state media said on Friday.
Premier Wen Jiabao, making his second visit to the disaster zone, visited hospitals and tents sheltering quake refugees on Friday in Beichuan county, one of the worst-hit areas.
In a temporary shelter for the Beichuan Middle School, which lost up to 1,000 students and teachers in the quake, Wen tried to cheer up children, writing a line on the blackboard reading "Deep distress resurrects(复兴)a nation".
Wen, a trained geologist, had earlier ordered rescue workers to eliminate the danger of the lakes "through engineering means" while swiftly evacuating(疏散) people in their path.
In Hongguang, in northeastern Sichuan, the earthquake caused both sides of a valley to slide, burying three villages and 900 people. The Qingzhu River is trapped behind.

A.Flood in The Qingzhu River

73. By writing “Deep distress resurrects a nation”, what does Wen mean?
A. He shows his great respect to the rescuing soldiers.
B. He encourages the people to rebuild their home.
C. He wants the students to forget the deep sorrow of the quake.
D. He cheers up the students for the bad living conditions.
74. We can imply from the passage that_________.
A. Wen has been the quake zone for twice.
B. Some of the students have the chance to have class.
C. Rain and aftershocks could bring more disaster
D. The quake killed 900 students in the Beichuan Middle School.

One possible version:
Last Thursday, we had a class meeting to discuss where to go for our spring outing. We came up with several choices such as going boating, climbing a mountain, and going to an amusement park. Finally, we decided to go mountain climbing.
The next day, we set off early in the morning. While climbing the mountain, we enjoyed the warm sunshine and a beautiful view. However, when reached the top, we were shocked to see litter here and there, such as bottles and banana peels. Then we started to pick up the litter. Afterwards, we put the rubbish into the nearby recycling bin and non-recycling bin respectively. We were tired but happy.。
