Dad was a cowboy who raised me on a farm in the mountains of western Virginia. Working cattle on horseback with him, I made many memories that shape who I am today. One from 2021 or 2021, when I was a girl, stands out above the rest.
We had to gather a couple hundred head of steers (小公牛) on the farm, so Dad and I rode on the horses and away we went. Our plan was to sweep around the farm, collecting cattle along the way. Then we would push them through the corner gate, which led them through the lower pens (畜栏), uphill through a path and into the upper pens.
We circled the farm, picking up a steer here and a couple more there. Noticing a thunderstorm coming up through the valley, we tried to move a little faster. But our cattle hated the corner gate. If you pushed them too hard they would run around; if you didn't push them hard enough they would stand there all day. You had to do it just right. I decided to push a little harder, and the lead steer headed toward the gate. I applied a little more pressure, but it was too much. The head steer jumped back, scaring the rest. The steers ran in all directions in an instant.
I could tell that my father was none too happy, but with the storm about to cut loose, he ordered our retreat. 〝We'll get them later,〞 he yelled. We took off,
but the farther we went, the worse I felt. So, I turned back, determined to sweep the steers once more. The thunder boomed louder and my heart raced faster as I picked them up along the way. I tried my best to ignore the weather.
I don't really know when it stopped raining, but by the time I got the steers into the upper pens, the sun had come out and Dad was standing at the gate with a big smile on his face. He didn't give me a pat on the back or say anything special but the smile was enough.

Time management
Time management is number one on the list for a reason. Sometimes it's not enough to sit down and think 〝I need to finish these three assignments by noon.〞 That's where time management comes in. A successful student will sit down and plan what they need to get done, for example, studying for tomorrow's test for one hour, doing a math assignment for 30 minutes and analyzing a poem for 20. And they take breaks! You cannot function at full capacity (领悟才干) if you study for four hours straight.
Independence
Independence pairs with time management. Not only do you need to be able to
schedule your homework, you have to put away your phone and actually do it. Unfortunately, you cannot rely on your parents or teachers to hold your hand and guide you through the land of homework to good grades. Independence became a problem for the students at my school with our new schedule. Suddenly helicopter parents weren't there when students were supposed to be doing their work. Although the librarian may try to get them on track, I often see my peers start conversations again as soon as she turns around. If you are constantly relying on your parents and teachers to remind you to complete your assignment, it's time to do that for yourself.
Lifestyle
This one sounds strange, but it does help. Energetic exercise before a test or study session has been proven to increase test scores and productivity. If you are able to, walk to school before your morning exam or do some jumping before sitting down to do homework. Combined with a good diet, your lifestyle should keep you focused at school, as well as helping you stay in shape. The ideal lifestyle would also include at least 8 hours of sleep a night. So why don't more people go to bed earlier? To be honest I'm not sure. I know I feel awful when I only manage five hours of rest.
If you lead a healthy life and can become an independent, time-managing machine you'll be fine.
