第二部分阅读(共两节,满分50分)
第一节:阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
阅读下列短文,从小每题所给的四个选项中选出最佳选项。

A
Spending as little as $ 5 a day on someone else could significantly boost happiness, the team at the University of British Columbia found.
Their experiments on more than 630 Americans showed they were measurably happier when they spent money on others—even if they thought spending the money on themselves would make them happier.
“We wanted to test our theory that how people spend their money is at least as important as how much money they earn,”said Elizabeth Dunn,a psychologist at the University of British Columbia. They asked their 600 volunteers first to rate their general happiness, report their annual income and detail their monthly spending including bills, gifts for themselves, gifts for others and donations to charity.
“No matter how much income each person made, those who spent money on others reported greater happiness, while those who spent more on themselves did not,”Dunn said in a statement.
Dunn's team also surveyed 16 employees at a company in Boston before and after they received an annual profit sharing bonus of between $ 3,000 and $ 8,000. “Employees who devoted more of their bonus to pro-social spending experienced greater happiness after receiving the bonus, and the manner in which they spent that bonus was a more important predictor of their happiness than the size of the bonus itself,”
they wrote in their report, published in the journal Science.
They gave their volunteers $ 5 or $ 20 and half got clear instructions on how to spend it. Those who spent the money on someone or something else reported feeling happier about it.
“These findings suggest that very minor changes in spending allocations—as little as $ 5—may be enough to produce real gains in happiness on a given day,”Dunn said.

Societies all over the world name places in similar ways. Quite often there is no official naming ceremony but places tend to be called names as points of reference by people. Then an organized body steps in and gives the place a name. Frequently it happens that a place has two names:one is named by the people and the other by the government. As in many areas, old habits die_hard,_and the place continues to be called by its unofficial name long after the meaning is lost.
Many roads and places in Singapore (新加坡) are named in order that the pioneers will be remembered by future generations. Thus we have names such as Stamford Road and Raffles Place. This is in keeping with traditions in many countries—in both the West and the East.
Another way of naming places is naming them after other places. Perhaps they were named to promote friendships between the two places or it could be that the people who used to live there were originally from the places that the roads were named after. The mystery is clearer when we see some of the roads named in former British bases. If you step into Selector Airbase you will see Piccadilly Circus—obviously named by some homesick Royal Air Force personnel.
Some places were named after the activities that used to go on at those places. Bras Basah Road is an interesting example. “Bras Basah”means “wet rice”in Malay (马来语). Now why would anyone want to name a road “Wet Rice Road”? The reason is simple. During the pioneering days, wet rice was laid out to dry along this road.
A few roads in Singapore are named by their shapes. There is “Circular Road”
for one. Other roads may have part of their names to describe their shapes, like “Paya Lebar Crescent”. This road is called a crescent (月牙) because it begins on the main road, makes a crescent and comes back to join the main road again.

Thirteen, for me, was a challenging year. My parents divorced and I moved to a new town with my father, far from my old family and friends. I was terribly lonely and would cry myself to sleep each night. To ease my sadness, my father purchased an old horse for me at a local auction. I named him Cowboy.
Cowboy was without a doubt the ugliest horse in the world. But I didn't care.
I loved him beyond all reason.
I joined a riding club and suffered rude comments and mean snickers about Cowboy's looks. I never let out about how I felt, but deep inside, my heart was breaking. The other members rode beautiful, registered horses.
When Cowboy and I entered the events where the horse is judged on appearance,we were quickly shown_the_gate. No amount of preparation and love would turn Cowboy into a beauty. My only chance to compete would be in the speed events. I chose the jumping race.
One girl named Becky rode a big brown horse in the race events. She always won the blue ribbons. Needless to say,she didn't feel threatened when I competed against her at the next show. She didn't need to. I came in next to last.
The stinging memory of Becky's smirks made me determined to beat her. For the whole next month I woke up early every day and rode Cowboy five miles to the arena(赛马场). We practiced running and jumping for hours in the hot sun and then I would walk Cowboy home totally exhausted.
All of our hard work didn't make me feel confident by the time the show came.
I sat at the gate and sweated it out while I watched Becky and her horse charge through the course and finish in first place.
My turn finally came. I put on my hat, rubbed Cowboy's neck and entered the arena. At the signal, we dashed toward the first fence, jumped it without trouble and raced on to the next one. Cowboy then flew over the second, third and fourth fences like a bird and I turned him toward the finnish line.
As we crossed the line the crowd was shocked into silence. Cowboy and I had beaten Becky and her fancy horse by two seconds!
I gained much more than a blue ribbon that day. At thirteen, I realized that no matter what the odds,I'd always come out a winner if I wanted something badly enough to work for it.

Youth who study just a short walk from a fast-food outlet(商店)eat fewer fruit and vegetables, drink more soda and are more likely to be fat than students at other schools, according to a research published Tuesday.
The study, which involved more than 500,000 teenagers at middle schools and high schools in California, adds new evidence to a growing backlash against the fast-food industry as studies suggest they contribute to the rising overweight in the United States.
“We've basically discovered that kids who are going to a school that is near a fast-food restaurant have a higher chance of being overweight than kids who are at a school that is not near a fast-food restaurant,”said Brennan Davis Of Azusa Pacific University in California, whose study appears in the American Journal of Public Health.
For the study,Davis and colleagues examined the relationship between fast-food restaurants located within one half mile of schools and overweight among middle and high school students in California. They took weight and dietary(饮食的)information from a statewide school survey between 2002 and 2005.“Overall,our patterns are consistent with(与……一致)the idea that fast food near schools affects students' eating habits,” Davis and colleagues wrote. They also found that students whose schools were located near fast-food restaurants eat fewer servings of vegetables and fruits, and drink far more soda than students at schools not located near fast-food restaurants.
The study could not determine why fast-food restaurants near schools have such an influence, but Davis said a nearby fast-food restaurant is really a hang out place for people to socialize.

With up to a third of Chinese college graduates unable to get a job, the number of suicides is soaring.
Chinese student Liu Wei who, consumed with guilt about her parents' financial sacrifices, took her own life.
For Miss Liu, the daughter of poor farmers, a degree was to be her passport out of a life of poverty, a way to escape working in the fields, or toiling as a humble migrant worker in a far-off factory in southern China.
But her dream will never become reality. Deeply depressed and ashamed about her failure to find a job, Miss Liu brought her studies and her life to an premature end by drowning herself in freezing ditch water.
Miss Liu's reaction to her predicament (困境) was extreme, but not unusual. In April, suicide was listed as the leading cause of death among students. And with one in three of this year's graduates unable to get a job, Miss Liu's anxiety about finding work is shared by most students.

参考范文:
Despite the efforts made by the government, one-third college graduates failed to get a good job this year feeling depressed and ashamed. What's worse, some of them committed suicide, just like Miss Liu in this report.
Once,I came across many setbacks in my study and life. For example, I failed in my math final exam when I was in Senior One. Knowing the result, I cried hard. However,I analyzed the situation and studied harder. With all my efforts and the help of others, I finally became good at math and passed many exams.
In my opinion, setbacks are harsh teachers, but the lessons we learn from them can be invaluable.
As a result, when setbacks happen, we should be brave and stay optimistic. It is a good way to relieve the pain to turn to our trusted ones for comfort, see a funny movie, listen to music, or visit a beautiful place. After we calm down, maybe we can gain something out of this painful experience.。
