Boys and girls, first, I'm going to tell you a funny story. I hope you can listen to it carefully, because I'll ask you some questions about it later. One day a little boy came into a fruit shop. He had five dollars and wanted to buy some apples. He said to the shopkeeper, “Give me apples for five dollars, please.” When the shopkeeper gave him the apples in a bag, the boy counted them and felt very surprised. Then he said, “Last Friday, my mother bought apples here for five dollars, too. Why did you give me fewer apples?”
“My boy, don't you know? The fewer apples you get, the less fruit you will have to carry.” said the shopkeeper.
“All right,” said the boy and he kept one dollar and gave the rest of the money to the shopkeeper. He was just going to leave the shop when he heard the words. “Come back! You must pay me five dollars.” “That's OK!” said the boy. “Don't you know? The fewer dol lars you get, the less money you will have to count.”

Barbara McClintock was one of the most important scientists of the 20th century. She made important discoveries about genes and chromosomes (染色体).Barbara McClintock was born in 1902 in Hartford, Connecticut. Her family moved to the Brooklyn area of New York City in 1908. Barbara was an active child with interests in sports and music. She also developed an interest in science.
She studied science at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Barbara was among a small number of undergraduate students to receive training in genetics in 1921. Years later, she noted that few college students wanted to study genetics.
Barbara McClintock decided to study botany, the scientific study of plants, at Cornell University. She completed her undergraduate studies in 1923. McClintock decided to continue her education at Cornell. She completed the master's degree in 1925. Two years later, she finished all her requirements for the doctorate degree.
McClintock stayed at Cornell after she completed her education. She taught
students botany. The 1930s was not a good time to be a young scientist in the United States. The country was in the middle of the great economic depression. Millions of Americans were unemployed. Male scientists were offered jobs. But female geneticists were not much in demand.
An old friend from Cornell, Marcus Rhoades, invited McClintock to spend the summer of 1941 working at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. It is a research center on Long Island, near New York City. McClintock started a temporary job with the genetics department. A short time later, she accepted a permanent position in the laboratory. This gave her the freedom to continue her research without having to teach or repeatedly ask for financial aid.
By the 1970s, her discoveries had had an effect on everything from genetic engineering to cancer research. McClintock won the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1983 for her discovery of the ability of genes to change positions on chromosomes. She was the first American woman to win an unshared Nobel Prize.

Three years ago, FFI (野生动植物保护国际组织), an international and conservation organization, gave the warning that in Vietnam the 150 elephants were in the danger of becoming extinct.
Though the poachers (偷猎者) still cannot make elephants
disappear completely from Vietnam, extinction is a foreseeable
thing, if Vietnam cannot do more to protect its elephants. Frank
Momberg, a representative of FFI, undertook the job of building
an elephant training center right in the central province of Dak Lak, believed to be the main land for elephants in Vietnam. At that time, people kept optimistic about the project's possibility, believing that this would help much the wildlife conservation plan.
However, in September last year, Mark McDonald, a conservationist, stated that the groups of conservationists all have “surrendered” in the fight to protect Vietnam's elephants. An elephant conservation center has been built in the National Park in Dak Lak Province, becoming the living place for a herd of 29 elephants. However, the small scale of the center and the limited money do not allow the officers here to prevent the illegally hunting to protect the lives of elephants.
Two weeks ago, a couple of elephants were killed right in the forest belonging to the shelter. The officers here discovered the dead body of a male elephant with its tusks cut. Forest protectors are now worried that the death of a male elephant would make it difficult for the elephants to maintain the race. Director of the Dak Lak National Park said the elephant illegally hunting had been developing so rapidly. Six male elephants have been killed so far this year.
The strong economic development since early 1990s has led to the narrowing of the living environment for elephants. The forests, which were once their habitats,
have been replaced by rice, coffee and rubber farms, or factories, water dams and roads. Meanwhile, the large forests with precious wood have been cut down for money.

To most people, noise pollution is a jet flying over their head. For one Spanish woman, it is a neighbor playing the piano. The woman has taken her neighbor to court. Now she wants to send her neighbor to prison for over seven years on the charges of psychological damage and noise pollution.
In a country known for its noisiness, the case has raised eyebrows. Neighbors often complain about street noise in Spain, but people seeking prison time for someone practicing the piano is unheard of. At the trial, Sonia Bosom says she has been suffering noise pollution up to now due to the practice sessions of Laia Martin, who lives below her. Martin, 27, didn't admit that she played at home that often, saying she took regular classes in other towns and mostly practiced at home on the weekends.
On the first day of the trial, the newspaper reported that Bosom told the court she now hated pianos so much that she couldn't even stand seeing them in a film.
Bosom says years of hearing constant playing has caused her “psychological injury”. Medical reports show she has suffered from a variety of problems, including insomnia (失眠), anxiety, and panic attacks.
She says tests by local authorities have found that the sound levels made by the piano are up to 10 decibels (分贝) higher than the limit. City authorities have asked the family several times to either stop the piano playing or soundproof (隔音) the room. The family told the court they carried out soundproofing work twice but the complaints continued.
The court hasn't made a final decision. A spokeswoman says the trial will end before May.
