My Unforgettable Summer Vacation
This summer was the best summer of my whole life! I had so many amazing adventures that I will never forget. It all started on the last day of school when my teacher, Mrs. Johnson, announced that we would have an exciting English writing contest over the summer break. The prize for the winning essay was a big basket full of books, art supplies, games, and candy. I knew right away that I wanted to win that prize more than anything!
As soon as summer vacation began, I got right to work braiding a colorful friendship bracelet for Mrs. Johnson as a thank you gift. I also started jotting down notes about all the fun things I did over the summer so I wouldn't forget anyDetails for my essay. My notes looked like this:
June 12 - Went to Ben's birthday party! Played pin the tail on the donkey and ate so much cake.
June 15 - Summer reading program at the library. Got a sticker for my first book!
June 20 - Highway road trip to visit Grandma and Grandpa on their farm. Played with the baby chicks!
And so on and so on. My notebook was absolutely stuffed with summery memories by the time August arrived.
Some of the most exciting events of the summer were the three big trips we took as a family. First, we drove up to a lake house belonging to family friends. We went swimming, had a bonfire, and made s'mores every night. I loved looking up at the starry sky and watching for shooting stars before dozing off in my cozy sleeping bag.
A few weeks later, my parents surprised me and my little brother with a trip to a gigantic water park. We spent the whole day zipping down water slides, floating along the lazy river, and getting soaked by the huge wave pool. I was having so much fun that I didn't even care when my brother put a wet floor sign in my bag as a prank!
The grand finale was our trip to the county fair in late August. We watched a rodeo, did rides like the Tilt-a-Whirl until we were dizzy, and I even entered my pet rabbit Snowball in the animal competition. She took home a blue ribbon! We spent the whole day gorging ourselves on treats like funnel cakes, cotton candy, and candied apples. At night, we watched a spectacular fireworks show that filled the whole sky with color.
In between those big trips, my best friend Anna and I went on adventures almost every day. We had lemonade stands, went on scavenger hunts around the neighborhood, caught fireflies in the park at night, and made epic backyard forts and clubhouses out of branches and old sheets. One time, we even held a summer camp in my backyard and invited all the neighborhood kids to join for a full week. We made crafts, played games, and put on silly talent shows.
One of my favoritest (I know that's not a real word, but I'm using it anyway!) parts of summer was my reading goal. Mrs. Johnson had given us all a challenge to read at least 10 books over break, so I went to the library as often as I could to check out big stacks of books. I really grew to love comic books and graphic novels about characters like Dog Man and Raina Telgemeier's realistic fiction stories. By the end of the summer, I had read 17 books! I was so proud.
As you can probably tell from my notes and memories, I stayed very busy and active all summer long. I cherished the freedom of having no school, sleeping in late, staying up past my bedtime, and just having tons of fun in the sun every single day. My notebook ended up completely crammed full of tiny
drawings, stickers, inside jokes with friends, and so many jotted down moments and laughs.
When it finally came time to submit my essay for the writing contest, I knew exactly what wonderful topic I wanted to focus on: the simple joys and pleasures of summer vacation. I spent a whole week rereading my notes and organizing my memories into one long, detailed essay about how magical summer is when you're a kid. I worked really hard on making my descriptions come alive with lots of specific details, examples, and even some creative writing tricks like onomatopoeias and similes. I had my mom proofread it about a million times before turning in my final draft.
A few weeks into the new school year, Mrs. Johnson on a Monday morning. "We have a very special guest with us today," she announced. "The first place winner of our summer writing contest!" That's when I realized it was me she was talking about! I couldn't believe I had actually won.
I slowly made my way to the front of the classroom where a smiley older lady was waiting with the grand prize basket. She shook my hand and told me that my essay had been chosen as the best out of every single entry across all grade levels. She really loved how I had filled my essay with so much fun and
appreciation for summer vacation. The judges said my descriptions were excellent and my positive energy and excitement just beamed right off the pages.
I gave Mrs. Johnson a big hug and thanked her for the writing contest idea. Then I excitedly opened my prize basket right there in front of the whole class. It had a huge assortment of books that looked amazing, including some of the Dog Man and Raina Telgemeier graphic novels I loved. It also had all kinds of rad supplies like colored pencils, crayons, fancy markers, sketchbooks, and decorative washi tape. Finally, the basket had cool novelty treats and toys like a hilarious yodeling pickle, temporary haircolor gels, and classic toys like a slinky and a zen garden. I spent the rest of the day slowly looking through my prizes with my classmates and feeling incredibly proud.
Winning that writing contest was so special, but the real prize was the awesome。
