China is a land of bicycles. At least it was back in 1992 when I traveled the country. Back then everyone seemed to be riding a bicycle. Millions of them, all black. Cars were rare. Yet since my arrival in Beijing last year, I’ve found the opposite is true. There are millions of cars. However, people still use their bicycles to get around. For many, it’s the easiest and cheapest way to travel today. Bicycles also come in different colors----silver, green, red, blue, yellow, whatever you want.
It’s fun watching people biking. They rush quickly through crossroads, move skillfully
through traffic, and ride even on sidewalks(人行道). Bicycles allow people the freedom to move about that cars just can’t provide.
Eager to be part of this aspect of Chinese culture, I decided to buy a bicycle. Great weather accompanied my great buy. I immediately jumped up on my bicycle seat and started home.[:]
My first ride home was orderly (守秩序的). To be safe, I stayed with a “pack” of bikers while cars on the streets came running swiftly out of nowhere at times. I didn’t want to get hit. So I took the ride carefully.
Crossing the streets was the biggest problem. It was a lot like crossing a major highway back in the United States. The streets here were wide, so crossing took time, skill and a little bit of luck.
I finally made it home. The feeling on the bicycle was amazing. The air hitting my face and going through my hair was wonderful. I was sitting on top of the world as I passed by places and people. Biking made me feel alive.
21. According to the author, why are bicycles still popular in China today?
A. Because they are traditional and safe.
B. Because they are convenient and inexpensive.
C. Because they are colorful and available.
D. Because they are fast and environment friendly.
22. The author decided to buy a bicycle because he intended ______________.
A. to ride it for fun
B. to use it for transportCom
C. to experience local skills
D. to improve his riding skills
23. How did the author feel about his street crossing?
A. It was boring.
B. It was difficult.
C. It was lively.
D. It was wonderful.
24. Which of the following best describes the author’s biking experience?
A. The author enjoyed showing off his biking skills.
B. The author was annoyed by the air while riding.
C. The author was praised by the other bikers.
D. The author took great pleasure in biking.

Next ti me you hear a funny joke ,you’d better not laugh too hard. According to a paper published by the British Medical Journal, laughter isn’t always the best medicine. Sometimes it can even be harmful.Professor Robin Ferner from the University of Birmingham, one of the authors of the study, found that bad things could happen to people who laughed too much. He says: "We found people with heartbeat problems which had stopped their heart, we found people who had fainted(昏倒), and we found people who’d dislocated(使关节脱位)their jaws or burst their lungs."
It seems that laughing can be no laughing matter. But it’s not all doom and gloom. Professor Ferner says there are benefits to laughing when you want to lose weight, for example. Yes, that’s right: laug h and be slimmer! Professor Ferner explains that: "You use energy when you laugh, you move your diaphragm(横膈膜), you expand your lungs, and both those things can be helpful."
According to the research, laughing for a quarter of an hour can burn up to 40 calories, and if you laughed all day you’d use up about 2,000 calories, which is what most people consume in a day. But don’t do that or you might end up with a painful jaw. Ouch! Or you might find people looking at you in a funny way.

C. diaphragm movement
D. jaw dislocation

B. About 2,000
C. About 1,000
D. About 2,040
31. What is the author’s att itude towards laughing in the last paragraph?
A. Favorable
B. Disapproving
C. Worried
D. Uninterested

How many hours do you spend sitting in a chair every day? Eight hours in the office plus three hours in front of the TV after work is normal for many people.
You probably don’t need an expert to tell you that sitting too much is not good for your health—from an increased risk of heart disease and obesity (肥胖)in the long term, it reduced cholesterol maintenance (胆固醇含量)in the short term, not to mention the strain(血流)on your neck and spine(脊柱).
To make matters worse, many researches show a good diet and regular exercise can’t reduce the negative effects of sitting too much.
A study of nearly 9,000 Australians found that for each additional hour of television a person watched per day, the risk of dying rose by 11%. Another study tracked the health of 123, 000 Americans between 1992 and 2006. The death rate for men who spent six hours or more per day sitting was about 20 percent higher than that for men who sat for three hours or less.
So what can we do about it? Health experts suggest we break up those many hours spent sitting with more hours spent standing.
The BBC did a simple experiment with a group of 10 volunteers who usually spent most of the day sitting. They were asked to stand for at least three hours a day. The researchers took measurements when the volunte-ers stood, and when they sat around. When they looked at the data, there were some striking differences, the BBC reported.
Blood sugar leveled off much quicker on the days when the study subjects stood compared with that on the days they spent in a chair. Standing also burned more calories-about 50 calories an hour. The researchers believe that even small adjustments(调整), like standing while talking on the phone, will help.
32. The underlined word “normal” in Paragraph 1 most probably means____.
A. standard answer
B. cause
C. excuse
D. reasonable explanation
33. What bad effect does sitting too much have?
A . low risk of heart disease. B. Becoming too fat.
C. Balanced cholesterol maintenance.
D. Benefiting your neck and spine.
34. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 3?
A. Sitting is killing us.
B. We should have a good diet.
C. Watching TV does us no good.
D. Women have higher death rate than men.
35. What is the purpose of the experiment in the text?
A. To help the 10 volunteers to lose weight.
B. To find the difference between standing and sitting.
C. To prove the benefit of standing.
D. To teach us how to control blood sugar.
