There is nothing in the US quite like Black Friday. Before midnight on Thursday, in malls
across the US, people start queuing up outside the locked entrances of stores, making longer and longer lines, holding coupons (优惠券), sipping coffee and hot chocolate, rubbing their hands and stamping (跺脚) their feet for warmth, excitedly chatting, and waiting for the clerks to open the door when the time arrives.
Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, which fell on Nov 28,2014, “has become in recent decades a special American holiday”,said the International Business Times. Indeed, up to 147 million Black Friday shoppers were expected to put up with the dark of night and the elbows(手肘)of other shoppers so that they could bring home some bargains, according to the US National Retail Federation.
But why does the shopping festival have such a name?
The name was first used in Philadelphia in the 1970s. The streets and sidewalks of the city became so packed with traffic and crowds on the day after Thanksgiving Day that the local police did not look forward to it. Because of this, they called the day “Black Friday”,said The Huffington Post. However, others believe that Black Friday takes its name from the fact that because of the increase in sales on the day, shops are able for the first time in the year to move out of the “red”–that is, debt –and into the “black”,or profit. Businesses, of course, try to take advantage of this day. A decade ago, retailers (零售商) opened at 5 or 6 am. Now, many of the big stores open at midnight.
People really seem to like the whole experience of queuing up before midnight, “for it isn’t just about the bargains”, noted CNN. “For many shoppers, it’s just fun to be part of a large crowd. Those who go to the malls at midnight are driven by the same thing that makes a million people get together in Times Square each New Year’s Eve.”
56. Which of the following statements about Black Friday is TRUE?
A. It is a special day in the US on which government hands out coupons to customers.

You may have been told before not to be afraid of anything. Fear is often associated with weakness. Fear is something to be avoided. But that’s not true, according to Time For Kids magazine. Fear can be good for us. Fear tells us about danger. Without fear, we wouldn’t know to run away from a tiger or step back from a cliff (悬崖).
In a study published in the Justice Quarterly journal in August, researchers from Michigan State University said that a healthy fear of crime keeps teenagers away from potentially dangerous people, places, and activities. Fear makes us jump, scream and sweat. But interestingly, sometimes we make ourselves feel fear on purpose. Think about scary books and movies, and also the long lines for a scary roller coaster ride (过山车).
Margee Kerr, a US sociologist, explained why to Time For Kids. Fear fills our brain with healthy chemicals, especially endorphins and dopamine, and these things create feelings of happiness and excite us, according to Kerr. In addition, when you’re scared, your body produces a chemical which helps people bond with each other.
“Watch people walking out of a haunted house (鬼屋), and you’ll see lots of smiles and high fives (击掌),” Kerr told Time For Kids. That also explains why schools and companies organize challenging trips and physical activities to build up team spirit. People experience and deal with fear in different ways. If you happen to be a “coward” who gets scared easily, don’t worry. There
is some evidence that being scared can help a person manage stressful situations.
Kerr said that things like giving a report in front of your class or performing in a school play help build a sort of endurance (忍耐力) to fear that makes us more confident. “You become more comfortable with the physical experience of fear, and so you’re better able to work through it during tense situations,” said Kerr.
So learn to love your fear. It only grows when we forget how helpful our fear is trying to be.

62. The underlined phrase “bond with” is closest in meaning to ______.
A. get closer to

The Isle of Wight, off the south coast of England, is the best place in Europe for discovering dinosaur bones. Dinosaur Farm Museum was established in 1993. Since then, the museum has introduced the study of old bones to many more people.
What we offer
Visitors can enjoy our displays, or watch us cleaning dinosaur bones and other fossils found on the island’s beaches.
The museum has a variety of different fossils, many of them never displayed to the public before. As more are discovered all the time, you can be sure of seeing something new each time
you visit.
We have a free Fossil Identification Service, so you can bring in any fossils you have and find out what they are. In addition, we have a reasonably-priced Museum Shop, where you can buy a souvenir of your visit. You could also bring a picnic and relax in our special picnic area.
Activities
Fossil hunts are organized from the museum and run all year round. Groups of up to 25 are guided on a local beach where they can search for fossils. All these hunts are fully licensed and insured, and guides can help to identify any fossils found and point out things of interest.

A time capsule, buried by Apple founder Steve Jobs 30 years ago, has been discovered after its location was long forgotten. In 1983, the young tech innovator (改革者) was attending a conference in Aspen when he and the group decided to bury a time capsule during a design convention. The tube that was filled with an collection of various goods---- ranging from the new apple mouse to a six-pack of beer for the people who discovered the time capsule---- was
meant to be dug up 20 years later.
There was a problem with that plan, however, because everyone involved in the plan forgot where it was buried. The final discovery happened at the hands of the crew from the National Geographic Channel’s reality show called Diggers. The discovery was well documented(记载)and is surely going to be featured on an upcoming episode(一集), and even the experts had problems finding this particular treasure. CNET reports that in spite of their preparations and clear idea of where the 13-foot-long tube was, it still took them two hours to dig it up using heavy machinery.
To anyone removed from the tech industry, the accomplishment in finding the tube appears to be the biggest accomplishment. To others, the most interesting object would likely be the “Lisa”mouse placed in the tube by the hands of a then-28-year-old Jobs. The Lisa Mouse, which Jobs named after his daughter, was one of the first commercial computer mice sold publicly, making it a rarity(罕见的东西)at the time.
The Aspen Historical Society is going to help the show creators catalogue the tube’s contents---- but no word yet whether or not the Diggers cracked open one of the six bottles of Boddington’s Ale that was left inside for the people who found the tube.
72. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The great idea of burying a time capsule.

D. The discovery of the time capsule buried by Jobs.

C. was found by the crew of Diggers.
D. was forgotten by everyone in the world.
74.________ attracts the people from the tech industry most in the time capsule.
A. The treasure.
B. The Lisa mouse
C. Boddington’s Ale
D. Jobs’ daughter
75. What is the TRUE statement according to the passage?
A. The diggers cracked open the six bottles of Boddington’s Ale

书面表达参考:
The door of opportunity won’t open unless you do some pushing. Chances always favor prepared minds. The story that happened when I was in high school can help illuminate the true meaning of the proverb.
On hearing the news that one student would be chosen and appointed to be the tour guide of some visiting teachers from Ireland, all of us felt excited. However, what annoyed us was that few of us could speak English fluently because most of us attached little significance to oral English. But our monitor, who practiced her listening and speaking nearly every day, was no exception. She succeeded in grasping the opportunity. Even more excitedly, she was offered a free summer camp to Ireland later.
Contrary to common belief that she was simply luckier, I think it was her preparations in advance that led to her success. This is a lesson I can learn from her success.。
