Mr Williams,39 was always a very careful driver, was driving home from work one evening when he came to a crossroad. It had a “SLOW”40 . He slowed down when he came to the main road,41 both ways to see that nothing was coming, and then drove across without stopping completely.
At once he heard a police whistle (哨声), so he pulled into the 42 of the road and stopped. A policeman walked over to him 43 a notebook and a pen in his hand and said, “You44 at that crossing just now."
“But the sign there doesn't say “STOP",answered Mr Williams, “It just says ‘SLOW’, and I45 go slow.”

It seems 48 great artists and scientists often suffer from mental problems
Both Einstein and Dickens had mental illness. Now scientists have started to look at whether mental illness and genius(天才)are 49 。

Do the two have anything to do with each other?
Dr Adele Juda studied 5000 creative people in Germany。

She found there were more people with mental illness in this group 50 in the general population。

Poets had the highest rate of mental illness, followed by musicians, with lower numbers for painters and architects.
Other scientists did research which also showed a strong link between mental problems and creativity. But it did nothing to 51 why。

Dr Ruth Richards of Harvard University made 52 breakthrough. Instead of studying creative people, she took a group of psychiatric (精神病的) patients and tested them for creativity。

The patients got much higher scores than a normal group。

Also, the patients' close relatives were much more creative than the patients and a normal group. This 53 that the key to the link between creativity and mental illness is in our genes. But this is a problem. According to Darwinism, harmful genes should be removed. Some scientists believe that evolution (进化)has created a balance, where the madness of a few people leads to the 54 of the whole human race。

Geniuses may be mad,bad 55 even just difficult to understand, but their discoveries have improved the world we live in. It seems that a little creative madness is good for us all.

At school they can talk to their friends but Robert and Joanna can not see their friends。

They live 100 , or perhaps 300,miles away and like Robert and Joanna, they all go to school by radio。

Mount Ebenezer is in the centre of Australia。

Not many people live in “The Centre”. There are no schools with desks and blackboards and no teachers in “The Centre”. School is a room at home with a two-way radio。

B
The other day I heard a few local musicians talking:
“I hate all the terrible pianos in this town. I hate that rubbish they play on the radio. They can’t even understand a bit of music。

“I’m never playing in that club again. To o many drunks and nobody listens to us。

"
But, one younger musician said,“There are a few clubs that book my band a few nights a month, and I'm trying to find other places to play。

I’m also looking to book a few summer festivals this year.”
I've heard that you are the average of the five people whom you spend the most time with,or to put it another way, you are who your friends are。

Attitudes are important. Whether they're positive or negative, they're rubbing off on you. If you’re around people who com plain about lack of work and about other musicians,or blame others, and you play the role of victim ,chances are that you will start to as well。

So it’s time to take a look at the people you call “friends”.
This is an easy exercise: Make a list of the people who you hang out with, and simply stop spending time with the negative people on your list. Set a new standard for yourself and don't become friends with people who fall below that standard.
Keep successful people around you and your own chances for success will be much better。

Ask them how they do it. Ask if they will help you get the work you're looking for,or maybe give you some advice to help you on your career path.
61。

A。

A friend in need is a friend indeed B. How to make friendship last for ever

6 means ______。

A. they'll push you ahead B。

C。

they’ll cover your shortcomings D. they’ll help you achieve your goal
63。

The musicians’ words at the beginning are written mainly to show ______.
A. the musicians’ living condition s are quite poor
B. people have poor taste in music
C。

people have different attitudes towards the same thing D。

young people have greater chances of succeeding
64. By taking the exercise mentioned in Paragraph 7,you can ______。

A. improve a lot in making more friends
B. come to the right way of making friends
C。

develop a better relationship with your friends D。

There are many ways to find a job. It can be as easy as walking into a neighborhood store to look at its announcement board. Local stores often have areas where people can put small signs telling what kind of service they need or can provide。

Such services include caring for children or cleaning houses.
Or,job searchers can look in the newspaper. Local newspapers have employment announcements placed by companies seeking workers。

Another popular tool for finding jobs is the Internet。

For example, people in four hundred and fifty cities around the world can use the Craigslist Web site to buy objects, meet people or find a job。

Craigslist says that it receives two million new job listings each month。

Another useful way to find a job is through a college or university。

For example, students at the University of Texas in Austin can go to the Career Exploration Center to get help in finding a job。

Of course, looking for a job requires knowing what kind of work you want to do. For example, there is a book called “What Color is Your Parachute (降落伞)?" by Richard Bolles。

This book has been helping people choose a career (职业)since it was first published in nineteen seventy。

Some experts also help people find jobs. Susan W. Miller owns a company called California Career Services in Los Angeles。

She says her company helps people find jobs by first helping them understand their strengths, goals and interests. Then she provides them with methods and resources to help them find the right job.

Section B (10points)
Directions: Read the following passage and answer the questions below, using the required number of words。

Now satellites are helping to forecast the weather。

They are in space, and they can reach any part of the world。

The satellites take pictures of the atmosphere, because this is where the weather forms。

They send
these pictures to the weather stations。

So meteorologists can see the weather of any part of the world. From the pictures, the scientists can often say how the weather will change.
Today, nearly five hundred weather stations in sixty countries receive satellite pictures. When they receive new pictures, the meteorologists compare them with earlier ones。

Perhaps they may find that the clouds have changed during the last few hours。

This may mean that the weather on the ground may soon change, too. In their next weather forecast, the meteorologists can say this。

So the weather satellites are a great help to the meteorologists。

Before satellites were invented, the scientists could forecast the weather for about 24 or 48 hours. Now they can make good forecasts for three or five days. Soon, perhaps, they may be able to forecast the weather for a week or more ahead.
81.Where does the weather form?(no more than 3 words)
82。

Why are the pictures a help to meteorologists?(no more than 10 words)

Dear Lisa,
I’m glad to have received your letter。

Our holiday life has changed a lot。

Learning and relaxing are still very important to us。

Besides, we often help our parents do housework or farm work。

Through that, we
学必求其心得,业必贵于专精
realise how hard our parents work every day。

And we can form a habit of laboring at the same time。

Also, we take an active part in social activities as volunteers. Sometimes, we go to the streets to collect rubbish or go to the hospital to cheer up the sick children。

We try our best to help people in need and make our hometown more beautiful. We find great pleasure in all these activities.
Best wishes !
Yours Li Ming。
