Scientists say they have developed an experimental device that produces electricity from the physical movement of a person walking , British scientist Max Donelan and other scientists in Canada and the United States developed the device. The device connects to a person’s knee. As the person walks ,the device captures energy each time the person slows down. To dothis ,the device helps with the slowing sown movement of the leg, the movements of the walking person push parts of a small machine that produces electricity. Using the device, an adult walking quickly could produce thirteen watts of electricity in just a minute. Donelan says walking at that speed could produce enough power to operate a laptop computer for six minutes. There are several possible uses for the device. Developers say it could help people who work in areas without electricity to operate small computers. The device could also he used in hospitals to operate heart pacemakers(起博器), it could even be used to assist in the movement of robotic arms and legs. The experimental version of the device weighs about one and a half kilograms, but it is too costly for most people to buy, but the researchers hope to make a lighter, less costly version, An improved version should be ready in one year.The[3]developers hope the device will one day help developing countries; nearly twenty five percent of people around the world live without electric power.A similar product was invented in 2005 by Larry Rome of theUniversity of Pennsylvania, He created a bag carried on a person’s back that also produces power from walking. The knee device does not produce as much electricity as the bag, but the bag requires the walker to carry a load of twenty to thirty kilograms.36.. The second paragraph mainly talks aboutA. who developed the deviceB. how the device worksC. several possible uses for the devicesD. how much electricity the device can produce37.. What is the disadvantage of the experimental version of the device?A. It is too heavy for the walker to bearB. It is too complex for people to useC. It is too expensive for most people to affordD. It will slow down one’s walking speed38.. Compared with the device designed by Larry Rome, this new deviceA. produces power without adding more loads to the walkerB. can produce more power in a much shorter timeC. needs to be equipped with a batteryD. can help the walker walk faster39.. From the passage, we can learn that the electrical device canA. help housewives operate the washing machineB. make it much easier for us to go onlineC. produce more electricity than that invented by Larry RomeD. be applied in medical fields to operate heart pacemakersBWhy are people interested in eating raw foods or whole foods? One reason is that eating these types of food reduces the risk of acid accumulation in your body.Raw and whole foods are usually digested more efficiently than cooked and refined foods. When we cook foods, we destroy the natural enzymes(酶)that are part of the food in its raw form. These enzymes were intended by nature to help us digest the food. When we consume food without these natural enzymes, our bodies either digest the food improperly or allow too many nutrients to be absorbed into the bloodstream. In both instances, the result is obesity. When too many nutrients are absorbed at once, the body grows fat. Improperly digested food moves slowly through the digestive tract, where it becomes increasingly acidic (酸性的). To protect its vital organs from this acidic waste, the body changes the acid into fat and stores it safely away from the organs.Processed foods contain chemical elements, which might confuse the appetite mechanism that tells us when we’ve had enough to eat; as a result, people often overeat . Processed foods also upset the digestive cycle. The body will either identify these foods as allergens and then store them safely away from the organs as fat, or the remains of undigested food will become acidic and enter the bloodstream as acid waste, which will stick to the blood vessel walls and block the passage of vital oxygen and nutrients heading for the body’s cells. The body’s metabolism(新陈代谢) becomes inactive, and then result is weight gain and obesity. The accumulation of acid in the digestive tract makes digestion increasingly inefficient. When that happens, even healthy foods can become acidic and the food allergies will become more common. To stop this vicious(恶性的) circle in its tracks, people need to consume food and supplements that will neutralize (使…中和)the acid already accumulated in body. Eating the right types of raw and wholefoods can help. it’s also important to restore your enzyme balance. You need to identify and avoid the foods that cause acid accumulation and co[4]nsume the foods that increase enzyme production. If you truly want to change and help your body heal itself , you need to take an active approach..40.. What is the main purpose of this passage?A. To advocate eating more raw and whole foodsB. To tell the differences between raw and processed foodsC. To inform people of the harm of processed foodsD. To warn people of the problem of obesity41.. It can be inferred from Para. 2 thatA. it is essential for people to protect their vital organsB. foods with natural enzymes help people keep fitC. we’d better be cautious about raw and whole foodsD. giving up cooked and refined foods is a new lifestyle42.. Processed foods are unhealthy because theyA. destroy body’s cellsB. are difficult to digestC. may lead to obesityD. stop body’s metabolism43.. What can we learn from the text?A. Processed foods are good for our appetite mechanismB. Eating the right types of raw and whole foods does good to our bodyC. The accumulation of acid in the digestive tract makes digestion more effectiveD. Processed foods also comfort the digestive tractCOf the thousands of different kinds of animals that exist in the world man has learned to make friends with an enormous number. Some are pets, and offer him companionship, some give protection, and some do hard work which man can not do for himself. Some people feed a pet dogor cat on odds and ends of table scraps(剩饭), and then wonder whythe animal seems tired and dull. The quantity of food depends on the size of the animal and the amount of exercise it takes. Overfeedingis as bad as underfeeding. Containers for food and water must be washed regularly if the animal is to maintain good health.Even well-cared-for animals may sometimes fall ill. Although we were brought up in the same way, my brothers and sisters soon abandoned their pressed flowers and insects. Unlike them, I had no ear for music and languages. I was not an early reader and I could not do mental math. Before World War I we spent out summer holidays in Hungary. I have only the dim(模糊的)memory of the house we lived in, of my room and my toys, Nor do I recall clearly the large family of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins who gathered next door. But I do have a crystal clear memory of dogs, the farm animals, the local birds and above all, the insects.I am a naturalist, not a scientist. I have a strong love of the natural world, and my enthusiasm has led me into various investigations. I love discussing my favorite topics and enjoy burning the midnight oil reading about other people’s observations and discoveries. Then something happens that brings these observations together in my conscious mind. Suddenly you fancy you see the answer to the riddle. Because it all seems to fit together. This has resulted in my publishing 300 papers and books, which some may light honor, with the title of scientific research. But curiosity, a keen eye ,a good memory and enjoyment of the animal and plant world do not make a scientist: one of the outstanding and essential qualities required is self-discipline, a quality I lack, A scientist can be made a naturalist. If you can combine the two, you get the best of both worlds.48.The author says that his a naturalist rather than a scientist probably because he thinks heA. just reads about other people’s observations and discoveriesB. lacks some of the qualities required of scientistC. has a great deal of trouble doing mental arithmeticD. comes up with solutions in most natural ways.49.The author can’t remember his clearly becauseA. The author spent a lot of time working on riddles.七选五阅读The need for love is deeply rooted in the human psyche(灵魂). 51 Separateness, according to psychologists, means to be cut off, helpless and alone in the world. It is the source of all anxiety.52 It can be selfish and possessive, or unselfish and giving. Abraham Maslow distinguishes between two kinds of love: B-love or “being love” means love for another person: unselfish love not d[6]ependent upon your own needs. D-love or “deficiency-love” is a selfish possessive love which is based upon someone else’s abilityto satisfy your needs.D-love is conditional. It depends upon whether personal needscontinue to be met. But B-love isunconditional. 53 Furthermore, as it depends upon who you are, it is possible only when you allow yourself to be known to the other person. The psychologist Erich Fromm also distinguished between two types of love. 54 Symbiotic union is an immature love based upon the satisfaction of needs and is similar to Maslow’s concept of D-love. Mature love, on the other hand, is a relationship that allows individuals to retain(保持) their independence, their identity, and their integrity. In mature love people can overcome their sense of separateness yet continue to be themselves. The mature lover would say, “I love you because I need you,” but the mature one:“ 55 ”A.There are two types of love.B.I need you because I love you.C.Love is a way of overcoming the feeling.D.Every one of us needs love.E.It depends not upon what you do, but who you are.F.They are immature love, called by him symbiotic union(共同体), and mature love.G.These two types are quite different from each other.第II卷(非选择题)短文改错Maria was afraid that she was going to have to deliver a bad news to her friendFreddy. 2014高考高三年级英语模拟试卷(第I卷)总分:150分考试时间:120分钟一.阅读理解(40分)AThe time may soon come when we say goodbye to most of the world’s languages. Today humans express themselves in over 6,000 different languages. But that is quickly changing. Many scientists say that over half of these languages will disappear within the next 50 years. After 100 years, the languages used in the world will not be more than 20.Why? It is because people from different cultures live and work together much more often than before. This brings change. The languages of the world’s main cultures are replacing the languages of the smaller cultures. Most international trade takes place in world languages such as English. People respect their own cultures and traditions, but when it comes to getting a job, knowing a world language is often necessary. It may mean the difference between success and failure.Technology works on the change of languages in an even more amazing way. Modern media such as radio and television give young people in developing countries much knowledge about the world. But this knowledge doesn’t come in words from the mouths of their parents or the elders in their neighborhood. It usually comes in the language of a different culture.People in different cultures think it good for them to share a popular language. They can quickly share ideas and work together. Knowing the same language means easier communication and is a basis for trust. Is the death of a small local language such a terrible thing? The answer is maybe. Many cultures may have words for many useful things we know nothing about. If their languages die, their valuable wisdom may be lost forever. The future of the world’s languages depends on our actions now. Will we protect endangered languages or allowed them to quietly disappear?Time will have the last word.56. Scientists say that within 50 years, perhaps, there will be only _____languages in the world.A. 4,000B. over 3,000C. around 3,000D. no more than 2057. In “The languages of the world’s main cultures are replacing thelanguages of the smaller cultures,” the verb “replace” means “_____”.A. to put something back into a correct placeB. to use a second thing in place of the first thingC. to find good place for somethingD. to decide how important something is58. The passage says that if all the people in the world knew a major worldlanguage, _____.A. radio and television would all use the languageB. it would be easier for them to share their ideasC. lessons at schools would be taught in the languageD. people would respect their own culture more59. Also, the passage says that if nobody spoke the languages of smallercultures, _____.A. Many of the words for things we do not know would be lost.B. knowledge would come from the mouths of the eldersC. people would have difficult in working togetherD. there would be no smaller cultures.60. By saying “Time will have the last word,” the writer means “ _____”.A. let us wait and seeB. we have time to do somethingC. it is too late to do anythingD. it is only a problem of timeBPeople who are cheerful and relaxed are less likely to suffer from colds. It’s possible that being full of vim and vigor helps the body fight illnesses, say the researchers from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in Pittsburgh.“We need to take more seriously the possibility that a positive emotional style is a major player in disease risk,” says psychologist Sheldon Cohen, the study’s lead researcher. In a previous study, Cohen and his colleagues found that people who tended to be cheerful and lively were least likely to develop sniffles, coughs, and other cold symptoms. Those findings were interesting, but they didn’t prove that a person’s attitude affects whether he or she gets sick. Instead, it was still probable that a person’s underlying personality is what matters.Evidence suggests, for instance, that certain people are naturally more likely to be outgoing and optimistic, with high self-respect and a sense of2control over life. This would mean that who we are, not how we feel, finally decides our chances of catching colds. To figure out which mattered more (personality or emotions). The CMU team interviewed 193 healthy adults. The researchers talked to each person over the phone every evening for 2 weeks. They told the researchers about the positive and negative feelings that they had experienced that day.The results showed that everyone in the study was equally likely to get infected. Their symptoms, however, differed depending on the types of emotions that they had reported over the previous 2 weeks.Among those who reported good moods and had been infected with the flu virus, for example, 28 percent developed coughs and stuffy (堵塞) noses. On the other hand, those symptoms struck 41 percent of people who had been less positive. Scientists argue about whether negative emotions or positive emotions have a stronger effect on how healthy we are, For now, it can not hurt to look on the bright side more often than not.61. What is the text mainly about?A. How to get rid of colds.B. Attitude determines life.C. Smiles turn away colds.D. Different opinions about colds.62.The phrase”full of vim and vigor” underlined in Paragraph 1 probablymeans___________.A.ignorantB. As early as the 19th century, people produced and read books of drawing. In many ways, they were similar to modern comics. They contained stories of naughty children and playful animals. The owl(猫头鹰)and the elephant were usually wise animals, ready to give advice. The lion and the tiger were brave. The fox and the wolf were cunning(狡猾的)greedy(贪婪的)and dangerous.A century ago, an American newspaper published the first full-colour comic strip. It was so popular that sales of the newspaper, Morning Journal, increased quickly. Since then, newspapers throughout the world have included comic strips. In modern times, comics are popular in China, Japan, the USA and almost everywhere. Not even video games or CD-ROMs have reduced their popularity. Names such as Snoopy, Woodstock and Garfield are well known in dozens of countries. The Peanuts comic strip appears in over 2,000 newspapers and in more than 25 languages. People believe that its creator, Charles M. Schultz, earned US$60 million a year.Perhaps one day, you may like to create your own comic strip and become a millionaire. First, you must think of a good plot. It should be funny, exciting or interesting in some way. It should have plenty of action. Moreover, the language must be realistic and simple. The words should suit the characters in your story. One type of person might say, “Please be quiet and listen to what we have to say.” But another type of character might simply say, “Shut up and listen!”Furthermore, the characters in your story must be clear to readers. They should be obviously good or bad ---- and not a mixture of both. A leader must be stronger or cleverer than his or her followers. In many comic strips ---- especially those showing crime of adventure ---- there should also be a hero or heroine. This will attract the reader to keep on reading the story.65. By placing an emphasis on competition, for example, are we missinga large segment of the talent pool?”68. Which of the following statements is Not true according to thepassage?A. In other words, we do not educate children only for the purpose of educating them. Our purpose is to fit them for life.In some modem countries it has for some time been fashionable to think that by free education for all — one can solve all the problems of society and build a perfect nation. But we can already see that free education for all is not enough; we find in such countries a far larger number of people with university degree; they refuse to do what they think “low” work; and, in fact, work with hands is thought to be dirty and shameful in such countries. But we have only to think a moment to understand that the work of a completely uneducated farmer is far more important than that of a professor; we can live without education, but we die if we have no food. If no one cleaned our streets and took the rubbish away from our houses, we should get terrible diseases in our towns…In fact, when we say that all of us must be educated to fit us for life, it means that we must be educated in such a way that, firstly, each of us can do whatever work suited to his brains and ability and, secondly, that we can realize that all jobs are necessary to society, and that is very bad to be ashamed of one’s work. Only such a type of education can be considered valuable to society.41. The writer of the passage thinks that _______.A. education can settle most of the world’s problemsB. free education for all probably leads to a perfect worldC. free education won’t help to solve problemsD. all the social problems can’t be solved by education42. The writer wants to prove that _______.A. our society needs all kinds of jobsB. our society needs free education for allC. a farmer is more important than a professorD. work with hands is the most important43. The purpose of education is _______.A. to choose officials for the countryB. to prepare children mainly for their future workC. to let everyone receive education fit for himD. to build a perfect world44. The passage tells us about _______ of the education.A. the meansB. the systemC. the valueD. the typeBMotherhood may make women smarter and may help prevent dementia(痴呆) in old age bybathing the brain in protective hormones(荷尔蒙) , U.S. reseachers reported on Thursday.Tests on rats show that those who raise two or more litters of pups do considerably better in tests of memory and skills than rats who have no babies, and their brains show changes that suggest they may be protected against diseases such as Alzheimer’s(早老痴呆症). University of Richmond psychology professor Craig Kinsley believes his findings will translate into humans.“Our research shows that the hormones of pregnancy(怀孕) are protecting the brain, including estrogen(雌激素), which we know has many neuroprotective (保护神经的) effects,”Kinsley said.“It’s rat data but humans are mammals just like these animals are mammals,” he added in a telephone interview. “They go through pregnancy and hormonal changes.”Kinsley said he hoped public health officials and researchers will look to see if having had children protects a woman from Alzheimer’s and other forms of age-related brain decline.“When people think about pregnancy, they think about what happens to babies and the mother from the neck down,”said Kinsley, who presented his findings to the annual meeting of the Society of Neuroscience in Orlando, Florida.“They do not realize that hormones are washing on the brain. If you look at female animals who have never gone through pregnancy, they act differently toward young. But if she goes through pregnancy, she will sacrifice her life for her infant—that is a great change in her behavior that showed in genetic alterations(改变) to the brain.”45. How do scientists know “Motherhood may make women smarter”?A. Some researchers have told them.B. Many women say so.C. They know it by experimenting on rats.D. 2014年高考高三年级英语模拟试卷_适用于新课标全国卷
Well-informedC. energeticD. in low spirits63.According to the research, persons who are likely to catch colds should bethose __________?A. Who have negative attitude towards their life.B. Who are very emotional and optimistic.C. Who are open-minded and outgoing.D. Who have trouble with their noses64.The last paragraph implies that __________.A.positive and negative emotions have good aspects.B.people who have been less positive tend to catch colds.C.Keeping an optimistic state of mind is good for health.D.positive emotions have a stronger effect on health.C高三英语第3页Comic Strips(连环漫画)For hundreds of years, artists have used cartoons to criticize bad rulers or landowners. The underlined word “plot” is similar in meaning to _____.A. placeB. stripC. storyD. character66. Which of the following is NOT the name of a cartoon Character?A. Snoopy.B. Peanuts.C. Woodstock.D. Garfield.67. In the 19th century, the wolf in the cartoons was NOT _____.A. cunningB. dangerousC. greedyD. brave4DMeetings don’t just eat up time in the workplace ; they actually make groups of people stupider, says new research.Working in a group makes people perform worse on intelligence tests, as some group members are so anxious about doing well that they “divert”their brain towards maintaining their social status in the group. You may joke about how committee meetings make you feel brain dead, but our findings suggest that they make you act brain dead as well, said Read Montague the study leader at Virginia Tech.Groups of volunteers showed measurable drops in IQ when asked to perform intelligence tests socially, with the results broadcast to the group. Some people performed well in the “social”tests, but others were affected badly--- and overall, performance dropped.Women appear to feel this pressure more than men---only three out of 13 female volunteers performed well in a social environment, with 10 out of 13 finding that their performance dropped. The researchers used a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner to monitor how people’s brains responded--- and found that bad performers tended to show activity in parts of their brain that dealt with emotions and anxiety.“We started with individuals who were matched for their IQ,”said Montague. “Yet when we placed them in small groups, ranked their performance on tasks against their peers, and broadcast the rankings, we saw dramatic drops in the ability of some study subjects to solve problems.”“Our study highlights the unexpected and dramatic consequences even subtle social signals in group settings may have on the individual,” said lead author Keneth Kishida.“We don’t know how much these effects are present in real-world settings. By placing an emphasis on competition, for example, are we missinga large segment of the talent pool?”68. Which of the following statements is Not true according to thepassage?A. A Every Tuesday, my daughters have two hours of softball practice. This is when I head around the corner to the library and work on my weekly class newsletter, grade papers and visit HelpOthers. I also do acts of kindness. I have put homemade smile cards in library books and also left money with a 'please enjoy this random act of kindness' note at the reference desk to pay someone's late fines (罚款). Tonight, I attached(贴上) a homemade smile card to a small bag of chocolates. As I walked into the library, I headed to my usual area near the reference desk and placed the bag on a table. I sat in a chair near the table and did some work. It was so interesting how quickly the library workers noticed! I heard some say, "Hey, did you see that?" as they pointed to the chocolate. The reference worker who I had given the money to pay fines was there tonight working. She noticed me and the familiar blue homemade smile card and was whispering to explain what I had done previously. For forty-five minutes, I would type and look up. It was interesting to watch as people slowed to read the card, but kept going. I think many felt uncomfortable taking it because it was out in the open. I figured it might take some time, and then I dove into(潜⼼) grading papers. At the end of an hour and half, I packed up to get the girls. As I looked up, I noticed the chocolate was gone! How did I possibly miss someone taking it? Then I was left wondering—man or woman, young or old, I'll never know. But I do hope they enjoyed it, and I'm so glad they took it. As I usually do, I visited briefly with the softball moms at the end of practice. I shared the exciting news about my kindness article and told them about the library acts of kindness. I've now come to think of softball night as Kindness Tuesday. 21. The latest and most up-to-date devices can be spotted almost anywhere and everywhere. What was once intended to contact people now works as a game center, social network and educator. Every day, more and more apps and sites are making their debut. Social networking apps have become a huge hit especially with the teenage generation. Sites like Twitter, Instagram, Vine, Keek and Facebook are a few of the most popular social networks. Bridgeport sophomore(⼤⼆学⽣) Emily Oldaker said, “ Social networks allow me to keep in touch with long-distance family members and friends and share pictures that will hold all my memories as a teenager.” Aside from social networking, technology can be extremely useful in the education department. Many schools have become more in touch with technology allowing iPads in the classroom. Many teachers see this as a distraction but several others find this a great new way of teaching. Many AP classes distribute iPads to students foe their work and research in depth. Robert C. Byrd Ap language teacher Terri Boggs commented on the use of iPads in the classroom, “ I think iPads are very valuable because I can assign specific applications that are useful in helping the development of their analysis and writing skills. They are also good hands-on tools.” Using iPads in class allows students to access the Internet from their desks, making in-class assignments more fun and quicker for students. iPads also make homework assignments easier to compete with resources at the fingertips. “ I like having an iPad for my classes. I can use it for many different things like completing my homework, research and even note-taking. I find it very useful and helpful,” Robert C. Byrd junior Sierra Davis said. Technology may have faults but ultimately the pros outweigh the cons. Technology in classrooms will continue to grow as our world advances. 28. The underlined word “debut” in the first paragraph means __________.A. developmentB. appearanceC. disadvantageD. position 29. In Emily Oldaker’s opinion, the networking apps can help people in ________.A. getting informed of advanced technologyB. building up their interest in their studiesC. paying attention to what they are doingD. contacting their friends living far away 30. What does Terri Boggs think of iPads?A. They leave students much distracted in classB. Students can do scientific research with themC. They are useful in improving students’ skillsD. Students can use them to pass the boring time 31. It can be inferred from the passage that _________.A. students depend on iPads heavilyB. iPads can have much influence on homework C. technology is influencing every corner of the world D. there are more disadvantages in modern technology D The illegal ivory trade has been a major problem in Africa for decades. Poachers(偷猎者) and hunters have killed hundreds of thousands of elephants to obtain ivory. Now, affected areas are taking action. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) announced on Wednesday key African states where poaching takes place have promised to stop the ivory trade to protect Africa’s elephants. Over the past few days, top officials and experts from 30 states met at the African Elephant Summit. The conference, organized by the IUCN and the government of Botswana, was held in Gaborone, Botswana. Conversation efforts will include China and Thailand, where much of the ivory is sent. “ Now is the time for Africa and Asia to join forces to protect this universally valued species,” said Botswana President Ian Khama. In the 1980s, as many as 1 million elephants across Africa were killed for their ivory tusks. This continued until 1989, when the Convention on International Trade in Species (CITES) voted to ban all trade in ivory. With trade choked off, demand for ivory fell. Elephant populations slowly began to increase. However, this progress was short-lived. According to the IUCN, 2011 saw the highest levels of poaching and illegal ivory trading in at least 16 years. Around 25,000 elephants were killed in Africa that year. Preliminary data from the IUCN shows even higher levels of illegal trade may have been reached in 2013. “With about 22,000 elephants illegally killed in 2012, we continue to face a critical situation,” said John E. Scanlon, CITES Secretary-General. “Current elephant poaching in Africa remains far too high, and could soon lead to local extinctions if the present killing rate continues.” At the African Elephant Summit, key African states where elephants make their home agreed to develop a “zero-tolerance attitude” towards poaching. The deal calls for maximum sentences for poachers and hunters, and increased cooperation between affected states. Officials are determined to classifying wildlife trading as a serious crime — and to making sure that the people who commit it are punished. All participants at the conference agreed to sign the deal. With these states coming together, there may yet be hope for elephants. 32. The purpose of holding the African Elephant Summit is to _______. A. prevent elephants from being poached B. make new laws to punish poachers C. collect money for elephants’ protection D. call for African countries to save elephants 33. Why are China and Thailand mentioned in the text? A. Elephants need protecting in these two countries. B. The ivory is illegal sold in these two countries. C. They know how to protect wildlife like elephants. D. They prefer jewelry and other items made of ivory. 34. What can we learn from Paragraph 5? A. The governments do nothing to protect animals. B. It means that we live among competing interests. Your roommate’s need to study for an exam may take priority (优先) over pizza. Your instructor may have good reasons not to change your grade. And the object of your romantic/interest may have other choices. In such a world, persuasion is the art of getting others to give fair and favorable consideration to our points of view. When we persuade, we want to influence how others believe and behave. We may not always prevail — other points of view may be more persuasive, depending on the listener, the situation, and the merit of the case. But when we practice the art of persuasion, we try to ensure that our position receives the attention it deserves. Some people, however, object to the very idea of persuasion. They may regard it as an unwelcome interruption into their lives. Just the opposite, we believe that persuasion is unavoidable —to live is to persuade. Persuasion may be ethical (合乎道义的) or unethical, selfless or selfish, inspiring or degrading. Persuaders may enlighten our mind or prey on our vulnerability. Ethical persuasion, however, calls on sound reasoning and is sensitive to the feelings and needs of listeners. Such persuasion can help us apply the wisdom of the past to the decisions we now must make. Therefore, the most basic part of education is learning to resist the one kind of persuasion and to encourage and practice the other.Beyond its personal importance to us, persuasion is necessary to society. The right to persuade and be persuaded is the bedrock of the American political system, guaranteed by the First Amendment to the Constitution (美国宪法).21. After all, this is the 1990s and the idea of children working is just unthinkable. That is, until you are told that they are all pupils of stage schools, and that the “work” th ey go off to is to go on the stage in a theatre.Stage schools often act as agencies(代理机构)to supply children for stage and television work. More worthy of the name “stage school” are those few places where children attend full time, with a training for the theatre and a general education.A visit to such schools will leave you in no doubt that the children enjoy themselves. After all, what lively children wouldn’t settle for spending only half the day doing ordinary school work, and acting, singing or dancing their way through the other half of the day? Then of course there are times for the children to make a name and make a little money in some big shows. Some stage schools give their children too much professional work at such a young age. But the law is very tight on the amount they can do. Those under 13 are limited to 40 days in the year; those over 13 to 80 days. The schools themselves admit that not all children will be successful in the profession for which they are being trained. So what happens to those who don’t make it? While all the le ading schools say they place great importance on children getting good study results, the facts seem to suggest this is not always the case.25. People would stop feeling uneasy when realizing that the children they’re talking to________.A. attend a stage schoolB. are going to the theatreC. have got some work to doD. love singing and dancing26. We’ve got a bigger brain, of course. But when it comes to brains, is bigger always better?Traditionally, scientists have thought that human’ superior intelligence derived(源于)mostly from the fact that our brains are three times bigger than those of our nearest living relatives, chimpanzees. People even used to believe that because men have slightly larger brains than women that men are smarter. This, however, is not the truth. Scientists at University College London in the UK have found that brain organization, and not brain size, is the key to the superiority of human intelligence, reported Live Science.Through millions of years of evolution, our ancestors were constantly pushed to get smarter so that they could meet the demands of new environments. However, holding this growing intelligence in increasingly large brains was not the best choice because bigger brains require more energy to power. “This is when reorganization may come into play, ”said Christophe Soligo, a member of the London research team.In the study, scientists looked at the brains of 17 species of primates(灵长目动物), including monkeys, apes and humans. They found that in the process of evolution, brains didn’t keep growing as a whole. Certain regions of the brain grew prior to others in response to species’ needs, and in this way they could make the best use of their limited brain space. For example, when early humans were struggling to survive, the brain region in charge of using tools and finding food grew in size more than other regions. But in modern times, the prefrontal cortex(前额皮质)—the region in charge of social cognition (认知), moral judgments and goal-directed planning—grew more than the rest of the brain.Think of the brain as a room. If a big room is poorly organized, it doesn’t necessarily store more stuff than a smaller one.Paul Manger, professor at the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa, explains this principle using the example of whales. He told Scientific American: “Whales have big brains, absolutely. But if you look at the actual structure of the brain, it’s not very complex. Brain size only matters if the rest of the brain is organized properly. ”29. It has recently been found that humans are smarter than the other animals mainly because.A. they are a species of primatesB. they have much larger brainsC. their brain structure is more complexD. they were constantly pushed to get smarter30. According to the article, in recent human evolution, .A. the brain kept growing in size to adapt to new environmentsB. most regions of the brain didn’t changeC. the prefrontal cortex grew more than the rest of the brainD. humans’ brains became increasingly simple so that humans could survive31. What can we conclude from the article?A. Gender makes a difference in intelligence.B. The size of the brain has nothing to do with intelligence.C. Species whose brain is organized properly tend to be smarter.D. Larger brains are usually organized better than smaller ones.32.
