Yesterday, a firefighter crossed a partly frozen Arizona Lake to rescue two teenagers, who paid no attention to the danger sign “THIN ICE, STAY AWAY”. The boys hung onto a tree after ice began to crack.A girl stayed on the bank. She noticed them and called for help.Jack, a man on the ice rescue team, moved forward on the ice carefully to save the boys. When he covered half of the 200 feet, the ice broke. He had to make hisway throu gh the water. The training he had received worked as designed. It was already dark by the time the boys were taken back to the bank. The boys didn't seem to be frightened, but their hands and feet got pretty cold. They were taken to hospital for treatment.“We often have kids trying to see how far out they can go,” said the spokesman. “That was pretty foolish, Arizona Lake, usually doesn't get cold enough for ice to freeze solidly. Th ere was probably an inch of ice in the middle of the Lake.”。

Helping them enjoy science can be easy; there’s no need for a lot of scientific terms(科学术语)or modern labs. You only have to share your children’s interests.Firstly, listen to their questions. I once visited a classroom of seven-year-old children to talk about science as a job. The children asked me “textbook questions” about schooling, the money I got and whether I liked my job. When I finished answering, we sat facing each other silently. Finally I said, “Now that we’ve finished with your lists, do you have questions of your own about science?”After a long wait, a boy put up his hand, “Have you ever seen a grasshopper(蚱蜢) eat? When I try eating leaves like that, I get a stomachache. Why?” This began a lot of questions that lasted nearly two hours.Secondly, give them time to think. Studies over the past 30 years have shown that, after asking a question, many teachers usually wait only one second or less for an answer, no time for a child to think. When teachers increase their “wait time” to three seconds or more, children give better answers. But in talking about science, these words make a child think that the discussion is over. Instead, keep things going by saying, “That’s interesting” or “I’ve never thought of it that way before”, or coming up with more questions or ideas.Lastly, show; don’t tell. Let children look at their hands through a microscope(显微镜), and they’ll understand why you want them to wash before dinner….36. To help children enjoy science, the most important thing for teachers to do is ___________.A. let them see the world aroundB. let them study in modern labsC. tell them the difficult terms on scienceD. share the children’s interests37. In the last sentence of the second paragraph, the words “your lists” mean ____________.A. your answers to the questionsB. your own questions about scienceC. your questions from textbooksD. all the questions of your own38. According to the passage, children can give better answers to the questions if teachers ____.A. ask them to answer quicklyB. wait for one or two seconds after a questionC. tell them to watch their languageD. wait at least three seconds after a question39. The writer talks about all of the following ways except that teachers should ____________.A. tell their children stories instead of telling them to remember factsB. offer their children chances to see things for themselvesC. allow enough time for their children to find answers to the questionsD. encourage their children to ask questions of their own40. The writer of the passage is probably ____________.A. a teacherB. a scientistC. a seven-year-old boy’s fatherD. a reporterBSince the 1970s, scientists have been searching for ways to link the brain with computers.Brain¬computer interface (BCI) technology could help people with disabilities send commandsto machines.Recently, two researchers, Jose Millan and Michele Tavella from the Federal Polytechnic School in Lausanne, Switzerland, demonstrated (展示) a small robotic wheelchair directed by a person’s thoughts. In the laboratory, Tavella operated the wheelchair just by thinking about moving his left or right hand. He could even talk as he watched the vehicle and guided it with his thoughts.“Our brain has billions of nerve cells. These send signals through the spinal cord (脊髓) to the muscles to give us the ability to move. But spinal cord injuries or other conditions can prevent these weak electrical signals from reaching the muscles.’ Tavella says. “Our system allows disabled people to communicate with external world and also to control devices.”The researchers designed a special cap for the user. This head cover picks up the signals from the scalp (头皮) and sends them to a computer. The computer interprets the signals and commands the motorized wheelchair. The wheelchair also has two cameras that identify objects in its path. They help the computer react to commands from the brain.Prof. Millan, the team leader, says scientists keep improving the computer software that interprets brain signals and turns them into simple commands. “The practical possibilities that BCI technology offers to disabled people can be grouped in two categories: communication, and controlling devices. One example is th is wheelchair.”He says his team has set two goals. One is testing with real patients, so as to prove that this is a technology they can benefit from. And the other is to guarantee that they can use the technology over long periods of time.41. BCI is a technology that can ________.A. help to update computer systemsB. link the human brain with computersC. help the disabled to recoverD. control a person's thoughts42. How did Tavella operate the wheelchair in the laboratory?A. By controlling his muscles.B. By talking to the machine.C. By moving his hand.D. By using his mind.43. Which of the following shows the path of the signals described in Paragraph 5?A. scalp→computer→cap→wheelc hairB. computer→cap→scalp→wheelchairC. scalp→cap→computer→wheelchairD. cap→computer→scalp→wheelchair44. The team will test with real patients to ________.A. make profits from themB. prove the technology useful to themC. make them live longerD. learn about their physical condition45. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?A. Switzerland, the BCI Research CenterB. New Findings about How the Human Brain WorksC. BCI Could Mean More Freedom for the DisabledD. 高中英语真题-2013年高考第二轮复习英语陕西版_27

高中英语真题:2013年高考第二轮复习英语陕西版第一节阅读理解AThe Alps are the youngest and highest mountain system in Eur ope. They stretch across the western and southern part of the c ontinent in a broad arc.The mountain range starts near the Med iterranean Sea on the border between France and Italy. Then it curves north and eastward through northern Italy,Switzerland,Liechtenstein, southern Germany,Austria and Slovenia. The Alps are about 1,000 km long, and the broadest section is over 260 km wide. The highest peak ,Mont Blanc, situated on the border between France,Italy and Switzerland, rises 4,807 meters above sea level.Other famous peaks are the Monte Rosa, the Matterhorn, the GroBglockner and the Zugspitze.Millions of years ago the area of today's Alps was covered by a large sea that separated Europe and Africa. The southern landmass started moving northwards. This movement folded rock la yers at the bottom of the sea.Heat and pressure transformed th e rock and pushed the_material upwards.Today these regions a re the highest parts of the Alps. Most of the newly formed rock is granite and gneiss, but many ranges consist of limestone which also formed on the seabed.During the Ice Age,which started about a million years ago,the Alps were covered with a thick blanket of snow.Glaciers mo ved down valleys and made them wider and deeper. As they mo ved they took rock and other material with them, creating moraines(冰碛).When glaciers started to melt water filled up behind thes e natural dams and created the alpine lakes we know today. The largest of these glaciers is the Aletsch in Switzerland which reaches a length of about 25 km.The longest glacier of the east ern Alps is the 8 km long Pasterze,at the foot of the GroBglockner. The ice and snow of the alpine regions helped create the large r ivers of today:the Rhine,Rhone,Danube and the Po. 1.From the first two paragraphs we know the Alps ______. A.are about 260 km wideB.stretch across the western part of AfricaC.are the youngest mountain system in the worldD.have the highest peak 4,807 meters above sea level 2.What does the underlined phrase “this material” in Para.3 re fer to?A.Sea water and rock.B.Rock that was transformed.C.Rock layers that were folded.D.Limestone which was on the seabed.3.It can be inferred from the passage that the Alps were forme d ______.A.before the Ice Age B.during the Ice Age C.because of seas' movement D.because of glaciers' mo vement4.From the passage we know Danube is ______.A.a kind of rock B.one of the Alps' famous peaks C.the name of a river D.one of the largest glaciersBNanoparticles(纳米粒子)are everywhere, from cosmetics and clothes,to soda and snacks. But as common as they are, they also have a downside, say researchers at Binghamton University and Cornell Universit y in a recent paper published in the journal Nature Nanotechnol ogy. These tiny particles, even in low doses, could have a big impact on our longterm health.According to the lead author of the article,Gretchen Mahler, assistant professor of bioengineering at Binghamton University ,much of the existing research on the safety of nanoparticles ha s been directly related to health effects. But what Mahler and a t eam of researchers really wanted to know was what happens w hen someone gets constant exposure in small doses—the kind you'd get if you took a drug or supplement that include d nanoparticles in some form.“We thought that the best way to measure the more subtle(精细的)effects of this kind of intake was to monitor the reaction of intest inal(肠道的)cells,”said Mahler.“And we did this in two ways:through human intestinallining cells that we had cultured in the l ab,and through the intestinal linings of live chickens. Both sets of re sults pointed to the same thing—that exposure to nanoparticles influences the absorption of nutrients into the bloodstream.”The uptake of iron was of particular interest due to the way it is absorbed and processed through the intestines.“What we found was that for brief exposures, iron absorption dropped by about 50 percent,”said Mahler.“Bu t when we extended that period of time, absorption actually increased by about 200 percent. It was very clear—nanoparticles definitely affect iron uptake and transport.”While brief oral exposure disrupted intestinal iron transport, longtime exposure caused intestinal cells to be larger and broa der, thus allowing iron to enter the bloodstream much f aster.“The int estinal cells are a gateway that ingested nanoparticles must go through to get to the body,”said Mahler.“We monitored iron ab sorption and found that the polystyrene nanoparticles affected t he absorption process and caused a physiological resp onse.”5.What is the best title for the passage?A.Nanoparticles are common in our life.B.Nanoparticles have an effect on our health.C.We should know more about nanoparticles.D.The intake of nanoparticles should be banned. 6.Gretchen Mahler's research is to ______.A.measure the direct health effects of iron uptakeB.find out the effect of longtime exposure to nanoparticles C.explore how to reduce the effects of nanoparticles D.study how nanoparticles affect chickens7.The underlined word “disrupted” in the last paragraph proba bly means “______”.A.disordered B.benefitedC.discovered D.followed8.In which part of a magazine can this passage most likely be found?A.Science. B.History.C.Entertainment. D.Economy.CClimate change is threatening to redraw the world's wineproduc ing map,and the effects are already being seen in earlier harvests and c oarser(更为粗糙、劣质的)wines.“The consequences of global warming are already being felt.Ha rvests are already coming 10 days earlier than before in almost all grapegrowing regions,”said Bernard Seguin, the head of climate studies at France's INRA agricultural resear ch institute. He was speaking at the opening of the Second International Congress on Wine and Climate Change.“Wine and win eproducing will change in a way that will depend on how we fac e global warming,”said Seguin.“If the temperature rises two or three degrees centigrade,we could manage to see Bordeaux remain as Bordeaux,Rioja as Rioja,Burgundy as Burgundy. But if it goes up five or six degrees,we must face up to huge problems, and the changes will be hard,”he said.Grapes are damaged if they ripen too quickly, due to higher temperatures and a lack of rain.“When a grape m atures more quickly, you get higher concentrations of sugar, lower acidity(酸性)and a higher PH level,”said Fernando Zamora of the oenology faculty(葡萄酒酿造学系)at the University of Tarragona in Spain. The result is coarser win es,with a higher alcohol level and lower acidity which can destroy t he delicate flavor of good quality wines,he said.It would also lead to higher prices in countries which tax wine a ccording to its alcohol level.“The types of wines will change in al most all regions,”said Vicente Sotes,a professor at the Polytechnic University. And some regions which still produce good wine would no longer benefit from the idea l climatic conditions that are responsible for their fame.“The French will have problems, especially in the Bordeaux region,”said Pancho Campos, the president of the Wine Academy of Spain, who organized the Barcelona conference.“German producers on the banks of the Rhine will be the least at risk,”he said. The French “Grand Crus” could be further thre atened by the “New World” wines of Australia,California,Chile,Argentina,South Africa and New Zealand, which would have the best climatic conditions.“The countries in the southern hemisphere(半球)are next to a greater mass of water, and it is sea currents that maintain the temperature at its level ,”said Campos.9.What's the main idea of the passage?A.How we should fight against the climate change. B.Earlier harvests are the causes of coarser wines.C.Wine production is threatened by the climate change. D.Global warming is very serious in many countries.10.A brand of wine with poor quality bears the feature of ____ __.A.a lower alcohol level B.a lower PH levelC.a lower acidity level D.a lower sugar level11.The last paragraph indicates that ______.A.wines produced in the countries in the southern hemisphere have low pricesB.French wine producers face more threats from the rise of te mperatureC.the southern countries have much higher temperature comp ared with the northD.the countries in the southern hemisphere would have ideal climate for wine producingDScientists think it will be possible to record people's dreams and then interpret them. They claim to have developed a system wh ich allows them to record higher level brain activity.Dr Moran C erf told the journal Nature:“We would like to read people's dreams.”Previously the only wa y to access people's dreams is for psychologists to ask about th em after the event and try to interpret them.Dr Cerf hopes to eventually compare people's memories of their dreams with an electronic picture of their brain activity. He told t he BBC:“There's no clear answer as to why humans dream. And one of t he questions we would like to answer is when do we actually cr eate this dream.”The scientist believes his latest research shows that certain neu rons(神经元)or individual brain cells are linked with specific objects or conce pts.He found that a particular neuron lit up when a volunteer tho ught about Marilyn Monroe. If a database was built up identifyin g various neurons with concepts, objects and people,it would allow them to “read the subject's minds”,according to Dr Cerf. However,Dr Roderick Oner,a clinical psychologist and dream expert, said that this kind of picture would be of limited help when it ca me to interpreting the “complex dream story”.In order to get a detailed picture of individual neurons, scientists had to have electrodes(电极)implanted deep in the brain by using surgery. The Nature resear chers used data from patients who had electrodes implanted to monitor and treat them for brain seizures. However,Dr Cerf said he hoped that it would be possible at a later stage t o monitor people without invasive surgery. He said it would be “wonderful” to be able to read the minds of coma(昏迷的)patients who are unable to communicate.12.How did we record and interpret our dreams in the past? During the Ice Age,which started about a million years ago,the Alps were covered with a thick blanket of snow.Glaciers moved down valleys and made the m wider and deeper. As they moved they took rock and other material with them, creating moraines(冰碛).When glaciers started to melt water filled up behind these natural dams and created the alpine lakes we know today. The largest of these glaciers is the Aletsch in Switzerland which reaches a length of about 25 k m.The longest glacier of the eastern Alps is the 8 km long Pasterze,at the foot of the GroBglockner. The ice and snow of the alpine regions helped create the large rivers of today:the Rhine,Rhone,Danube and the Po.1.From the first two paragraphs we know the Alps ______.A.are about 260 km wideB.stretch across the western part of AfricaC.are the youngest mountain system in the worldD.have the highest peak 4,807 meters above sea level2.What does the underlined phrase “this material” in Para.3 refer to?A.Sea water and rock.B.Rock that was transformed.C.Rock layers that were folded.D.Limestone which was on the seabed.3.It can be inferred from the passage that the Alps were formed ______.A.before the Ice Age B.during the Ice AgeC.because of seas' movement D.because of glaciers' movement4.From the passage we know Danube is ______.A.a kind of rock B.one of the Alps' famous peaksC.the name of a river D.one of the largest glaciersBNanoparticles(纳米粒子)are everywhere, from cosmetics and clothes,to soda and snacks. But as common as they are, they also have a downside, say researchers at Binghamton University and Cornell University in a recent paper published in the journal Nature Nanotechnology. These tiny particles, even in low doses, could have a big impact on our longterm health.According to the lead author of the article,Gretchen Mahler, assistant professor of bioengineering at Binghamton University, much of the existing research on the safety of nanoparticles has been directly related to health effects. But what Mahler and a team of researchers really wanted to know was what happens wh en someone gets constant exposure in small doses—the kind you'd get if you took a drug or supplement that included nanoparticles in some form.“We thought that the best way to measure the more subtle(精细的)effects of this kind of intake was to monitor the reaction of intestinal(肠道的)cells,”said Mahler.“And we did this in two ways:through human intestinallining cells that we had cultured in the lab,and through the intestinal linings of live chickens. Both sets of results pointed to the same thing —that exposure to nanoparticles influences the absorption of nutrients into the bloodstream.”The uptake of iron was of particular interest due to the way it is absorbed and processed throug h the intestines.“What we found was that for brief exposures, iron absorption dropped by about 50 percent,”said Mahler.“But when we extended that periodof time, absorption actually increased by about 200 percent. It was very clear—nanoparticles definitely affect iron uptake and transport.”While brief oral exposure disrupted intestinal iron transport, longtime exposure caused intestinal cells to be larger and broader, thus allowing iron to enter the bloodstream much faster.“The intestinal cells are a gateway that i ngested nanoparticles must go through to get to the body,”said Mahler.“We monitored iron ab sorption and found that the polystyrene nanoparticles affected the absorption process and caus ed a physiological response.”5.What is the best title for the passage?A.Nanoparticles are common in our life.B.Nanoparticles have an effect on our health.C.We should know more about nanoparticles.D.The intake of nanoparticles should be banned.6.Gretchen Mahler's research is to ______.A.measure the direct health effects of iron uptakeB.find out the effect of longtime exposure to nanoparticlesC.explore how to reduce the effects of nanoparticlesD.study how nanoparticles affect chickens7.The underlined word “disrupted” in the last paragraph probably means “______”.A.disordered B.benefitedC.discovered D.followed8.In which part of a magazine can this passage most likely be found?A.Science. B.History.C.Entertainment. D.Economy.CClimate change is threatening to redraw the world's wineproducing map,and the effects are already being seen in earlier harvests and coarser(更为粗糙、劣质的)wines.“The consequences of global warming are already being felt.Harvests are already coming 10 da ys earlier than before in almost all grapegrowing regions,”said Bernard Seguin, the head of climate studies at France's INRA agricultural research institute. He was speaking at the opening of the Second International Congress on Wine and Climate Change.“Wine and wine producing will change in a way that will depend on how we face global warming,”said Seguin.“If the temperature rises two or three degrees centigrade,we could manage to see Bordeaux remain as Bordeaux,Rioja as Rioja,Burgundy as Burgundy. But if it goes up five or six degrees,we must face up to huge problems, and the changes will be hard,”he said.Grapes are damaged if they ripen too quickly, due to higher temperatures and a lack of rain.“When a grape matures more quickly, you get higher concentrations of sugar, lower acidity(酸性)and a higher PH level,”said Fernando Zamora of the oenology faculty(葡萄酒酿造学系)at the University of Tarragona in Spain. The result is coarser wines, with a higher alcohol level and lower acidity which can destroy the delicate flavor of good quality wines,he said.It would also lead to higher prices in countries which tax wine according to its alcohol level.“The types of wines will change in almost all regions,”said Vicente Sotes,a professor at the Polytechnic University. And some regions which still produce good wine would no longer benefit from the ideal climatic conditions that are responsible for their fame.“The French will have problems, especially in the Bordeaux region,”said Pancho Campos, the president of the Wine Academy of Spain, who organized the Barcelona conference.“German producers on the banks of the Rhine will be the least at risk,”he said. The French “Gr and Crus” could be further threatened by the “New World” wines of Australia,California,Chile,Argentina,South Africa and New Zealand, which would have the best climatic conditions.“The countries in the southern hemisphere(半球)are next to a greater mass of water, and it is sea currents that maintain the temperature at its level,”said Campos.9.What's the main idea of the passage?A.How we should fight against the climate change.B.Earlier harvests are the causes of coarser wines.C.Wine production is threatened by the climate change.D.Global warming is very serious in many countries.10.A brand of wine with poor quality bears the feature of ______.A.a lower alcohol level B.a lower PH levelC.a lower acidity level D.a lower sugar level11.The last paragraph indicates that ______.A.wines produced in the countries in the southern hemisphere have low pricesB.French wine producers face more threats from the rise of temperatureC.the southern countries have much higher temperature compared with the northD.the countries in the southern hemisphere would have ideal climate for wine producingDScientists think it will be possible to record people's dreams and then interpret them. They claim to have developed a system which allows them to record higher level brain activity.Dr Moran Ce rf told the journal Nature:“We would like to read people's dream s.”Previously the only way to access people's dreams is f or psychologists to ask about them after the event and try to interpret them.Dr Cerf hopes to eventually compare people's memories of their dreams with an electronic pictu re of their brain activity. He told the BBC:“There's no clear answer as to why humans dream. And one of the questions we would like to a nswer is when do we actually create this dream.”The scientist believes his latest research shows that certain neurons(神经元)or individual brain cells are linked with specific objects or concepts. He found that a particular ne uron lit up when a volunteer thought about Marilyn Monroe. If a database was built up identifying various neurons with concepts, objects and people,it would allow them to “read the subject's minds”,according to Dr Cerf. However,Dr Roderick Oner,a clinical psychologist and dream expert, said that this kind of picture would be of limited help when it came to interpreting the “complex d ream story”.In order to get a detailed picture of individual neurons, scientists had to have electrodes(电极)implanted deep in the brain by using surgery. The Nature researchers used data from patients w ho had electrodes implanted to monitor and treat them for brain seizures. However,Dr Cerf said he hoped that it would be possible at a later stage to monitor people without invasiv e surgery. He said it would be “wonderful” to be able to read the minds of coma(昏迷的)patients who are unable to communicate.12.How did we record and interpret our dreams in the past?A.We couldn't do that because of our limited science knowledge.B.Only some scientists could do that with some special systems.C.Everyone could do that by asking about the dreamers after the event. D.Psychologists could do that by asking about the dreamers after the event. 13.What can be inferred from the 3rd paragraph?A.Dr Cerf's latest research is really a success.B.Dr Cerf's latest research turns out to be a failure.C.Not all scientists are in favor of Dr Cerf's opinion.D.All scientists think Dr Cerf's research is ridiculous.14.Why did scientists have electrodes implanted deep in the brain?A.Because they wanted to gain a more clear image of individual neurons. Seeking the Edge Dr. Joseph L. Rose ISBN 9781462031795 Seeking the Edge provides the tools and techniques to find that edge in one’s life . ---driving readers to achieveIn 1978, I was 18 and was working as a nurse in a small town about 270 km away from Sydney, Australia. I was looking forward to having five fays off from duty. Unfortunately, the only one train a day b ack to my home in Sydney had already left. So I thought I’d hitch a ride (搭便车).I waited by the side of the highway for three hours but no one stopped for me. Finally, a man walked over and introduced himself as Gordon. He said that although he couldn’t gi ve me a lift, I should come back to his house for lunch. He noticed me standing for hours in the November heat and thought I must be hungry. I was doubtful as a young girl but he assured (使…放心)me I was safe, and he also offered to help me find a lift home afterwards. When we arrived at his house, he made us sandwiches. After lunch, he helped me find a lift home.Twenty-five years later, in 2003, while I was driving to a nearby town one day, I saw an elderly man standing in the glaring heat, trying to hitch a ride. I thought it was another chance to repay someone for the favour I’d been given decades earlier. I pulled over and picked him up. I made him comfortable on the back seat and offered him some water. After a few moments of small talk, the man s aid to me, “You haven’t changed a bit, even your red hair is still the same.”I couldn’t remember where I’d met him. He then told me he was the man who had given me lunch and helped me find a lift all those years ago. It was Gordon.50. The author had to hitch a ride one day in 1978 because .A. her work delayed her trip to SydneyB. she was going home for her holidaysC. the town was far away from SydneyD. she missed the only train back home51. Which of the following did Gordon do according to Paragraph 2?A. He helped the girl find a ride.B. He gave the girl a ride back home.C. He bought sandwiches for the girl.D. He watched the girl for three hours.52. The reason why the author offered a lift to the elderly man was that .A. she realized he was GordonB. she had known him for decadesC. she was going to the nearby townD. she wanted to repay the favour she once got53. What does the author want to tell the readers through the story?A. Giving sometimes produces nice results.B. Those who give rides will be rapid.C. Good manners bring about happiness.D. People should offer free rides to others.CAccording to sociologists(社会学家), every modern industrial society has some form of social stratification(阶层). Class, power and status are important in deciding people’s rank in society.Class means a person’s economic position in society. A commonly used classification is lower class, middle class and upper class. While sociologists disagree on how these terms should be exactly defined, they do describe societies like the United States quite well. One study shows that 53% of Americans belong to the lower class, 46% the middle class, and 1% the upper class. Interestingly, a surgeon earning $500,000 a year and a bus driver earning $50,000 a year both regard themselves as the middle class!Power refers to the amount of control a person has over other people. Obviously, people in positions of great power (such as governors) exercise(行使)big power, but people who take orders from others have less power. Power and class do not always go hand in hand, however. For example, the governor of a state has great power, but he or she may not belong to a corresponding (相应的)economic class. Generally, however, there is a relationship between power and class. To our knowledge, there aren’t too many people who aren’t millionaires in the U.S. Senate! Status is the honor or respect attached to a person’s position in society. It can also be affected by power and class, but not necessarily so. For example, a university professor may have a high status but not belong to a high social class or have a lot of power over others.54. What can we learn about “the middle class” from Paragraph 2?A. People earning $50,000 a year belong to the middle class.B. Nearly half Americans belong to the middle class.C. People generally consider bus drivers as the middle class.D. Sociologists have a clear definition of the middle class.55. According to the text, we know that _____.A. power and class do not always correspond with each otherB. status refers to a person’s economic position in societyC. people with high status have a lot of control over othersD. class is less important in deciding a per son’s social rank56. Which of the following shows the structure of the whole text?○P1○P1○P1○P1○P2○P3P2P4P2P3P2○P3P4P4○P3○P4A. B. C. D.DAbout 30 years ago, I left Cuba for the United States with my son. After getting settled finally in Brunswick, New Jersey, I enrolled(注册) my son in kindergarten. Several weeks later, my son’s teacher asked me to meet him at his office. In the teacher’s office, and exchange of greetings was followed by his questions: “Is your son mentally retarded(弱智的)?Does he suffer from any kind of mental disability?”Was he talking about my wonderful Scola? NO,no,it can’t be. What a helpless, lonely moment!I told him that Scola was a quiet, sweet little boy, instead. I asked him why he was asking me all these questions. My son could not follow the teacher’s directions, he told me, and thus, Scola was disrupting the class, Didn’t he know my son did not speak English yet?He was angry; “Why hasn’t your son been taught to speak English? Don’t you speak English at home?”No, I didn’t speak English at home, I replied. I was sure my son would learn English in a couple of months, and I didn't want him to forget his native language. Well, wrong answer! What kind of person would not speak in English to her son at home and at all time? “Are you one of those people who come to this country to save dollars and send them back to their country, never wanting to be a part of this society?”Needless to say, I tried to tell him I was not one of “those people.” Then he told me the meeting was over, and I left.As I had expected, my son learned to speak English fluently before the school year was over.He went on to graduate from college and got a job, earning close to six figures. He travels widely and leads a well-adjusted, contented life. And he has benefited from being bilingual(双语的)。
