Chinese women in the countryside ,from teenage girls to white-haired grandmothers, can cut paper with scissors into all kinds of things, making paper-cutting of great interest. Because papercutting is a Chinese folk art, it has close links with traditional Chinese festivals and customs in the countryside. For example, window, door and lanternpaper cuts are put up during the Spring Festival and the LanternFestival. During the Spring Festival, farmers usually stick white paper on thewindows of their houses and then paste ( 粘贴 ) green and red paper cuts on them. They are also pasted in rooms to celebrate birthdays or in honor of the dead at funerals. Generally speaking, paper cuts are pasted in courtyards, rooms and on everyday goods to add to a cheerful atmosphere. There are some special paper cuts of traditional designs. These are used for embroidery ( 刺绣 ) on clothes , shoes, hats, pillows, bed curtains and door curtains. The cutter first cuts theoutline of paper. Second, the outline is sewn onto another piece of paper. The paper is then charred ( 熏黑) by a lamp or candle and then the sewn pattern outline is removed. Thus the original design is saved to provide the pattern forembroidery. In this way traditional patterns have been handed down from generation to generation.1. While wheels need lo roll on smooth surfaces, roads with smooth surfaces weren't going to be constructed until there was plenty of demand for them.Eventually, road surfaces did become smoother, but this difficult situation appeared again a few centuries later. There had been no important changes in wheel and vehicle design before the arrival of modern road desig n.In the mid-1700s,a Frenchman came up with a new design of road—a base layer(层)of large stones covered with a thin layer of smaller stoncs.A Scotsman improved on this design in the 1820s and a strong, lasting road surface became a reality. At around the same time, metal hubs(the central part of a wheel)came intobeing, followed by the Pneumatic tyre(充气轮胎)in 1846.Alloy wheels were invented in 1967,sixty years after the appearance of tarmacked roads(柏汕路).As wheel design took off.vehicles got faster and faster.【语篇导读】本文为说明文。

For many people, winter depression, the most common type of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), is as much a part of the season as hats and scarves.Winter serious SAD sufferers may need medical treatment. It is only when we cannot see perfectly that we realize how important our eyes are.People who are near-sighted can only see things that are very close to their eyes. Everything else seems blurry (unclear). Many people who do a lot of work, such as writing, reading and sewing become near--sighted.People who are far-sighted suffer from just the opposite problem. They can see things that are far away, but they have difficulty in reading a book unle ss they hold it at arm’s length. If they want to do much reading, they must get glasses, too.Other people do not see clearly because their eyes are not exactly the right shape. They have what is called astigmatism (散光). This, too, can be corrected by glas ses. Some people’s eyes become cloudy because of cataracts (白内障). Long ago these people often became blind. Now, however, it is possible to operate on the cataracts and remove them.Having two good eyes is important for judging distances. Each eye sees things from a slightly different angle. To prove this to yourself, look at an object out of one eye; then look at the same object out of your other eye. You will find the object’s relation to the background and other things around it has changed. The difference between these two different eye views helps us to judge how far away an object is. People who have only one eye cannot judge distance as people with two eyes.6. We should take good care of our eyes ___ .A. only when we can see wellB. only when we cannot see perfectlyC. even if we can see wellD. only when we realize how important our eyes are7. People who suffer from astigmatism have ____ .A. one eye bigger than the otherB. eyes that are not exactly the right shapeC. a difficulty that can be corrected by an operationD. an eye difficulty that cannot be corrected by glasses(C)T he word “conservation” has a thrifty(节俭)meaning. To conserve is to save and to protect, to leave what we ourselves enjoy in such good condition that others may also share the enjoyment. Our forefathers had no idea that human population would increase faster than the supplies of raw materials; most of them, even until very recently, had the foolish idea that the treasur es were “limitless” and “inexhaustible”. Most of the citizens of earlier generations knew little or nothing about the complicated and delicate system that runs all through nature, and which means that, as in a livingbody, an unhealthy condition of one part will sooner or later be harmful to all the others.Fifty years ago nature study was not part of the school work; scientific forestry was a new idea; wood was still cheap because it could be brought in any quantity from distant woodlands; soil destruction and river floods were not national problems; nobody had yet studied long-term climatic cycles in relation to proper land use; even the word “conservation” had nothing of the meaning that it has for us today. For the interests of ourselves and those who will come after us, we must now set about repairing the mistakes of our forefathers. Conservation should, therefore, be made a part of everyone’s daily life. To know about the water table(水位)in the ground is just as important to us as a knowledge of the basic arithmetic formulas. We need to know why all watersheds(上游源头森林地带集水区)need the protection of plant life and why the running current of streams and rivers must be made to yield ( produce ) their full benefit to the soil before they finally escape to the sea. We need to be taught the duty of planting trees as well as of cutting them. We need to know the importance of big nature trees, because living space for most of man’s fellow creatures on this planet is figured not only in square measure of surface but also in cubic volume(容积量)above the earth. In brief, it should be our goal to restore as much of the original beauty of nature as we can.11. According to the author the greatest mistake of our forefathers was that _______.A. they had no idea about scientific forestryB. they had little or no sense of environmental protectionC. they did not realize the importanceD. they had no idea of how to make good use of raw materials12. It can be inferred from the passage that earlier generations didn’trealize _______.A. the interdependence(相互依存)of water, soil, and living thingsB. the importance of the proper land useC. the harmfulness of soil destruction and river floodsD. the extraordinary rapid growth of population13. With a view to correcting the mistakes of our forefathers, the author suggests that ______.A. we plant more treesB. our forefathers be taught environmental science, as well as the science of plantsC. environmental education be directed toward everyoneD. we return to nature14. What does the author imply(express indirectly)by saying “living space for most of man’s fellow creatures on this planet is figured not only in square measure of surface but also in cubic volume(容积量)above the earth.”?A. Our living space on the earth is getting smaller and smaller.B. Our living space should be measured in cubic volume.C. We need to take some measures to protect space.D. We must create better living conditions for both birds and animals.15. The underlined word “restore” probably is closest to the meaning of “_________”.A. put backB. bring backC. keepD.protect第二卷Ⅳ. Can exercise during childhood protect you against memory loss many decades later? Exercise early in life seems to have lifelong benefits for the brain,in rats at least.“This is an animal study, but it shows that physical activity at a young age is very important—not just for physical development, but for the whole lifelong track of cognitive(认知的)development during ageing,〞says Martin Wojtowicz of the University of Toronto,Canada. “In humans,it may delay the appearance of Alzheimer's disease(阿尔茨海默病),possibly to the point of preventing it.〞Wojtowicz's team divided 80 young male rats into two equal groups, and placed running wheels in the cages of one group for a period of six weeks.Around four months later—when the rats had reached middle age—the team taught all the rats to connect an electric shock with being in a specific box. When placed in the box, they froze with fear. Two weeks later, the team tested the rats in three situations:exactly the same box in the same room, the same box with the room arranged differently, and a completely different box in a different room. The rats without access to a running wheel when they were young now froze the same percentage of times in each of these situations, suggesting they couldn't remember which one was dangerous. But those that had been able to run in their youth froze 40 to 50 percent less in both changed box settings.“The results suggest the amount of physical activity when we're young,at least for rats, has influence on the brain and cognitive health—in the form of better memories—when we're older,〞 says Arthur Kramer of Northeastern University in Boston, who has found that,in humans, exercise promotes the growth of new brain cells.1.The study shows that ________.A.physical activity is important for physical healthB.using the running wheels is of benefit to the rats' growthC.physical activity can prevent humans' Alzheimer's diseaseD.the more exercise a rat has when young, the better memory it will possess whenolder2.How are Paragraph 3 and 4 mainly developed?A.By analyzing causes.B.By giving an example.C.By describing the process.D.By showing differences.3.What does the underlined word “it〞 in Paragraph 2 refer to?A.Exercise. Ⅳ.阅读理解Increasingly, travel is woven into our daily lives. Whether for business, pleasure or holiday happymaking, travel is as much a part of our lives as MP3 players and cable TV.With so many people traveling, I'd like to make the case for treating travel as a hands-on adventure, rather than a passive(被动的) sightseeing opportunity. It can make a big difference in the rewards you get. Here's an example. When I was in Ethiopia, I was there for the nature and the history, but I found a crowd of local men drinking beer and talking about sports, music and even a little politics. Most of the conversation was happy and trifling (琐碎的), but I also learned that one of the group, a youngster of about 13, had lost all his family and was living on the streets. Despite his sad story, you could not have found a better-adjusted kid, who joked with me.I traveled to more than 21 countries. I saw the ancient pyramids in Egypt, the wonders of the Roman Empire. I traveled first class and I stayed at 5star hotels, but what really impressed me are the everyday people I meet along the way. The boy did perfect back flips (后翻) in the field, and he smiled when I gave him $5. The Ethiopian farmers planted the land as their ancestors have done for thousands of years. My advice is to embrace (拥抱) the wonderful world of travel. If you can get off that ship or tour bus and rub shoulders with the locals —do it. Of course, be careful, but experience tells me that there is much in this world todiscover if you let down your guard just a little. Open your eyes, open your mind, open your heart —open your wallet if you have to. The blessings will all be yours. 1.What might be the most suitable title for the passage?A.Traveling Is Part of Our LifeB. Traveling Makes a Difference in Your LifeC. There is Much in the World to DiscoverD. It Pays to Be Active in Traveling答案与解析 D 本文从一个新的角度说明了旅游的情况,作者通过自己的旅游经历,说明了在旅游的过程中,一个人如果以积极的态度去体验当地人的生活,以一种爱去关心当地人,那么他就会有所收获,因此D项反映了主题。
