Hurricane(飓风) Babette reached the northeastern United States today and caused death and destruction everywhere. The killer storm carried winds of 135 miles per hour. The high winds and heavy rains, together with the force of the Atlantic Ocean, created extremely dangerous waves. It is not yet known how many people died or were hurt in this storm, but it is said that the numbers will be very high. The damage to homes, business and crops will run into billions of dollars. Now that the storm is over, the long, slow rebuilding will begin.
With the arrival of the tornado season, the National Weather Service is again
telling people how to protect themselves from these deadly storms. The winds from tornadoes are the most violent winds on earth. They can blow up to 400 miles per hour. A tornado looks like a funnel(漏斗). It is also very loud. It may sound like a train coming at you. In fact, the winds from a tornado can pick up a train and throw it around. If a tornado is seen in your area, it is very important that you protect yourself.
A basement (地下室) is the safest place to go. Try to wait under a table in the basement. If your building does not have a basement, stay on the ground floor but lie flat under a bed or table. Stay away from windows. If you are outside or in your car, try to find a narrow place to lie down in.
As the area tries to deal with the worst flood of the century, there are many heartwarming stories of people helping other people. From all over the world people have sent food and clothes to help the thousands who have had to leave their homes. Many volunteers have come to help to make sandbags and use them to build walls against the overflowing river. While the result of this disaster will be terrible for many, it is beautiful to see people coming together to help others and save lives, and property (财产).

On July 16,1960, Jane Goodall, a 26-year-old former secretary from England, began to study the behaviour of chimpanzees in the wild. Until that time, scientists had mostly observed and studied chimpanzees in laboratories and zoos. Few scientists had gone to study chimpanzees in the remote areas of Africa where the chimps live. When scientists had studied the chimpanzees in the wild, they hadn't spent long periods of time observing them. Jane Goodall planned to watch chimpanzees in Africa over a ten-year period and see exactly how they behaved. She was not a professional scientist when she started out. Her book, "In the Shadow of Man", tells how she began her project and what she discovered.
As Goodall said in 1973, "I had no qualifications at all. I was just somebody with a love of animals". Her love of animals drew her to Africa where she met Dr. Louis S. B. Leakey. Leakey was a world-famous scientist who was studying how prehistoric people lived. Since chimpanzees are humans' closest living relatives, Leakey thought prehistoric people might have lived in the same ways that chimpanzees live today. Leakey told Goodall that studying chimpanzees might give clues about the way that early people lived.
Leakey asked Goodall to study the chimpanzees on the shores of Lake Tanganyika in Africa. The chimpanzees were very shy and the country was very
difficult to travel through. Goodall took on the difficult job of finding and watching the chimpanzees.

BEIJING, Sunday, March 5,2006— China's new "historic task" is to narrow the gap between rich and poor and improve the economy of the country's vast but still poor rural areas, Prime Minister Wen Jiabao said in a national address Sunday morning.
Wen said officials must find a way to make sure that the two-thirds of China's 1.3 billion people who live in rural areas share the quick economic growth that has mostly taken place in urban regions.
"We need to see clearly that there are many hardships and problems in economic and social life," he said in the televised address before the National People's Congress. Some deeply seated problems that have built up over a long time have yet to be solved, and new problems have occurred that cannot be ignored (忽视)."
Wen focused a large section of his speech on the recently announced effort to build a "new socialist countryside", in which the central government has promised to spend more on agricultural and rural basic construction and social services for the country's 800 million farmers and rural residents.
He said the government had decided to put US$42.3 billon in such spending this year, an increase of 14.2 per cent over 2005. That rate of growth is not particularly high for a country that recorded 9.9 per cent economic growth last year.

Three members of an international crime ring had been arrested and were being brought to Will Ketchum's office for questioning.
"What do we know about these three?" the Inspector asked. "Are they South Americans?"
"All I know about them so far is what Officer Tall told me before he went off duty," said Sergeant Zupp. "He understands Spanish and that's what they speak, though they seem to know some English. From what he heard by chance, two of them are brothers named Malo, and the other is called Bueno."
"I've heard of the Malo brothers," said the Inspector.
"I don't know which two are the brothers," continued the Sergeant, "but Officer Tall told me he'd heard the Malos agree not to give a truthful answer to any question we asked. Bueno said it was hopeless and he was going to tell the truth. I guess the Malos are going to be out to confuse us."
The Inspector had the men brought in. He asked the bald one whether his name was Bueno or Malo. The man mumbled a reply and before the Inspector could repeat the question, the others answered.
"He says his name is Bueno," volunteered the thin one.
"He says his name is Malo," said the fat one.
The Inspector turned to Sergeant Zupp. "They're clearly keeping to their plan about who is telling the truth and who is lying. Take the brothers back to their cell and leave Bueno here with me."

Firstly, they should be polite and friendly to the athletes and visitors from all over the world, and avoid improper behaviour. Secondly, they should stick to their posts, offering good services, satisfying any reasonable needs and being ready to help those in difficulty, and never fail to do theirduty. Thirdly, they should introduce the Chinese culture and history to foreigners so that they may know China better and never say or do anything that harms the image of our motherland.
If I have the honour to be chosen as a volunteer, besides the above, I will work hard and creatively, but never be lazy. I will follow the law and disciplining, but never break them. I will take the opportunity to make friends with the athletes and visitors, and help make the 2008 Olympic Games a great success.。
