第十九单元检测
(时间:100分钟满分:120分)
第一部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

A
If you want to become a fluent English speaker, you should take some advice. There are four skills in learning English. They are reading, listening, speaking and writing. The most important thing you must remember is that if you want to improve your speaking and writing skills you should first master(掌握) the skills of reading and listening.
Read as much as you can.But your reading must be active. It means that you must think about the meaning of the sentences, the meaning of the unfamiliar
words, etc. There is no need for you to pay much attention to grammar or try to understand all the unfamiliar words you come across. If you see them for the first time and recognize them whenever you see them again, for example,in other passages or books, that’s enough. It would be better to prepare yourself a notebook so you can write down the important words or sentences in it.
As for listening, there are two choices:besides reading, you can listen every day for about 30 minutes. You can only pay attention to your reading and become skillful at your reading, then you can catch up on your listening.Since you have lots of inputs(输入) in your mind, you can easily guess what the speaker is going to say. This never means that you should not practice listening.
For listening, you can listen to cartoons or some movies that are specially made for children.Their languages are easy.Or if you are good at listening you can listen to VOA or BBC programs every day.Again the thing to remember is being active in listening and preferably taking some notes.
If you follow these pieces of advice, your speaking and writing will improve automatically(自动地),and you can be sure that with a little effort they will become perfect.
1According to the author, which should you improve first among the four skills?
A.Reading and listening.
B.Reading and writing.

答案B
3The author seems to agree with the view that .
A.everyone should listen to VOA or BBC programs every day
B.you needn’t practice listening if you keep on reading every day
C.being good at reading is helpful in improving your listening
D.you should take notes of whatever you hear
解析由倒数第二段的第三句“Or if you are good at listening you can listen to VOA or BBC programs every day.”可推知A项错误。

由文章内容可知B、D两项错误。

由第三段的第二、三句“You can only pay attention to your reading...easily guess what the speaker is going to say.”可推出C项正确。

答案C
4The passage is mainly about how to .
A.choose suitable listening materials
B.deal with new words in reading
C.read as quickly as possible
D.become fluent in speaking and writing English
解析全文第一段提出:要想提高说、写技能就要先提高听、读技能。

A study of English learning problems was carried out among a total of 106 foreign students. It shows that most students considered understanding spoken English to be their biggest problem on arrival. This was followed by speaking.Writing increased as a problem as students discovered difficulties in writing papers that they were expected to hand in.Reading remained as a significant(显著的) pro blem.
The information gained helped us in determining where special attention should be paid in our course.Although many students have chosen to attend the course with a reasonable motivation(动机),we considered it important to note what seemed to encourage interest.Nearly all the students have experienced some kind of grammar-based English teaching in their own country. To use the same method would be self-defeating because it might reduce motivation, especially if it has failed in the past. Therefore,a different method may help because it is different.
Variety of activity was also seen as a way of maintaining (保持) or increasing motivation.Several years ago we had one timetable that operated throughout, but we soon found that both the students and the teachers lost interest about halfway
through the ten weeks. This led us to a major rethink,so finally we brought it into line with the expressed language needs of the students.
5What is the passage mainly about?
A.Foreign students have more problems.
B.There are many ways to improve English.
C.Teaching should meet students’ needs.
D.English learning problems should be studied again.
解析文章的最后一句话是点明主旨的“...so finally we brought it into line with the expressed language needs of the students.”即教学应当满足学生的需要。

答案C
6Writing became a bigger problem when foreign students .
A.had to write their papers
B.became better at speaking
C.became less interested in reading
D.had fewer problems with listening
解析由第一段倒数第二句“Writing increased as a problem as students discovered difficulties in writing papers that they were expected to hand in.”可知,当学生发觉在写需要上交的论文有诸多困难时,写作方面的问题也越来越突出。

答案A
7We may infer from the last two paragraphs that .
A.different teaching methods should be used
B.grammar-based teaching seems to be encouraging
C.English courses are necessary for foreign students
D.teaching content should be changed halfway
解析由原文第二段末句“Therefore,a different method may help because it is different.”可以得出答案为A项。

答案A
8The underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refers to “”.

Baby sign language is a growing movement.Pointing to a colourful flower,Tricia Campbell lifts her baby’s soft hand, and rapidly moves it from one side of his nose to the other as she sniffs(嗅) loudly.“Flower!”she says loudly.Gregory smiles, looks carefully and says happily,“Flower!”It could be a ye ar before
Gregory,4 months old,can speak, but now his mother hopes to communicate with her baby through sign language.
Like others around the world,Campbell is part of a growing movement of parents teaching hearing babies simple signs to communicate before they can talk.Baby sign language has been more popular in recent years. The movie,Meet the Fockers, where Robert De Niro’s character teaches his young grandson to sign, makes it well developed.
Babies generally begin to talk between 12 and 15 months, but babies can use sign language to communicate before they learn how to speak.
“We know they are learning language faster than they are able to show you with their speech production because that system takes a long time to develop,”says Gerald McRoberts, director of developmental research at the Haskins Laboratories,a private,non-profit research institute on speech and language.
“They are understanding words before they are able to say them. From around 16 to 18 months, they might say 50 words but understand 200.They understand short sentences well,”says McR oberts.
Studies have shown deaf children learn to use sign language earlier than hearing children learn to speak meaningfully. As to whether hearing babies can communicate earlier with sign language,McRoberts says,“I think that’s still unknown. It may.It may not.I’m very interested in that very question, and we are just starting a few st udies here.”
9In the whole passage, the first paragraph is written to .
A.show how Tr icia Campbell taught her son “flower”
B.show Gregory can use baby sign language
C.introduce baby sign language
D.explain that baby sign language is easy to learn
解析通读全文可知,本文的话题是婴儿手势语,第一段旨在以实例引出本文的话题。

答案C
10The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 probably refers to .
A.how to teach a grandson
B.making baby sign language meaningful
C.the movement of teaching babies sign language
D.the movie,Meet the Fockers
解析联系上文可知,本段落主要讲述父母教婴儿手势语在近几年十分流行,而这部电影使这个运动得到了更好的发展。

答案C
11Many parents teach their babies sign language mainly to .
A.make their babies clever
B.make their babies learn English fast
municate with their babies
D.make their babies interested in language
解析由文章第二段“...to communicate before they can talk”以及下文多次提到communicate可知,父母教孩子手势语是为了与孩子交流。

A.Gregory is a 4-month-old baby.
B.Babies can use sign language before they can speak.
C.Babies can understand more words than those they can say.

解析由最后一段McRoberts的话可知,有些东西还是未知的,现在还不能确定,故D项与原文表述不一致。

而其他三项都符合文意。

Some unusual words describe how a person spends his or her time. For example, someone who likes to spend a lot of time sitting or lying down while watching television is sometimes called a couch potato.A couch is a piece of furniture that people sit on while watching television.
Robert Armstrong,an artist from California, developed the term “couch potato” in 1976.Several years later,he listed the term as a trademark with the United States government.Mr.Armstrong also helped write a funny book about life as a full-time television watcher. It is called The Official Couch Potato Handbook.
Couch potatoes enjoy watching television just as mouse potatoes enjoy working on computers.A computer mouse is the device that moves the pointer,or cursor,on a computer screen. The description of mouse potatoes became popular in 1993.American writer Alice Kahn is said to have invented the term to describe young people who spend a lot of time using computers.
Too much time inside the house using a computer or watching television can cause someone to get cabin fever.A cabin is a simple house usually built far away from the city.People go to a cabin to relax and enjoy quiet time.
Cabin fever is not really a disease. However, people can experience boredom and restlessness if they spend too much time inside their homes. This is especially true during the winter when it is too cold or snowy to do things outside.Often children get cabin fever if they cannot go outside to play.So do their parents. This h appens when there is so much snow that schools and even offices and stores are closed.
Some people enjoy spending a lot of time in their homes to make them nice places to live. This is called nesting or cocooning.Birds build nests out of sticks to hold their eggs and baby birds. Some insects build cocoons around themselves for protection while they grow and change.Nests and cocoons provide security for wildlife. So people like the idea of nests and cocoons, too.
The terms cocooning and nesting became popular more than twenty years ago. They describe people buying their first homes and filling them with many things. These people then had children.
Now these children are grown-up and have left the nest. They are in college.Or they are married and start families of their own far away. Now these parents are living alone without children in their empty nests. They have become empty nesters.
13Which of the following was first used?
A.Couch potato.
B.Cocooning.
C.Mouse potat o.
D.Nesting.
解析由第二段第一句“Robert Armstrong,an artist from California,developed the term‘couch potato’ in 1976.”知,couch potato是在1976年第一次被使用。

第三段第三句“The description of mouse potatoes became popular in 1993.”告诉我们mouse potato在1993年才流行,倒数第二段告诉我们cocooning和nesting是20多年前才开始流行的。

因此A项正确。

答案A
14Which of the following refers to a person who spends much time on the computer?
A.A couch potato.
B.A nester.
C.A mouse potato.
D.An empty nester.
解析由第三段第一句“Couch potatoes enjoy watching television just as mouse potatoes enjoy working on comput ers”可知答案为C项。

答案C
15Why can most people easily get cabin fever in winter?
A.Because they are addicted to computer games.
B.Because they would like to play outside.
C.Because it is so cold that they cannot go outside.
D.Because they are too busy at work or school.
解析由第五段第三句“This is especially true during the winter when it is too cold or snowy to do things outside.”可知答案为C项。

答案C

If you are like most international students, you are probably pretty comfortable with reading and writing in English, but not as comfortable with listening and speaking in the language.Below are some tips to help you strengthen your conversational skills.16.
Make friends with American students.Practice makes perfect. The more you converse with others in English, the better you get. Many international students end up befriending a lot of—or only—other international students.17.Hanging out with natives not only naturally pushes you to improve your spoken English, but also helps you pick up cultural and social information.
Learn from American friends.Tell your American friends that you are trying to improve your listening and speaking skills, and would like them to help you.If you pronounce a word incorrectly,or misuse an idiom, you want them to tell you.18.
Increase your knowledge.19.If you have been exposed to topics that are likely to be discussed in conversation, you have a much better chance of understanding people when they talk, and of being able to express yourself well.
20.If you have to explain something to someone, you have a strong motivation to pronounce everything as well as you can,and find alternative ways to explain yourself.Eventually, this becomes a good habit. Many people have asked me how I learned to speak English fluently, and I owe most of it to my years of being a math teacher in college.
A.I don’t think this is a good idea.
B.You will learn much faster this way.
C.If possible,become a teacher at your school.
D.It’s a win-win opportunity for international students.
E.Read books, keep up with news and watch popular shows and movies.
F.This is a good way to make some extra cash while improving your English.
G.They will likely help you adapt more quickly to your new environment in the US. 答案16~20 GABEC

60%的同学认为:

Dear editor,
I’m writing to tell you about the discussion we have had about whether an entrance fee should be charged for parks.
Dear editor,
I’m writing to tell you abou t the discussion we have had about whether an entrance fee should be charged for parks.Sixty students out of one hundred think that a ticket should not be bought before one enters a park, for it is a place for the public to go to when they are free.If a ticket must be bought,a gate and walls have to be built for a park, which will make a city look ugly.Forty students out of one hundred think that an entrance fee should be charged before one enters a park, but that the price of the ticket should be reasonable.Money that is got from ticket selling can be used to pay the gardening workers and buy different kinds of flowers and trees. As for myself,I really think we visitors should pay the entrance fee when we enter a park. After all,it takes a lot of money to maintain a park in good working order.Do you agree with me,dear editor?
Yours truly,
Li Hua。
