One teacher praises a student by saying “You’re so smart!” Another teacher says, “You must have worked really hard at this!” Which student does better in school? Studies show that students who hear the words of the second teacher will do better. Those students are learning that their effort is important.
Psychologists(心理学家)looked at what students did after they were given different types of praise. Some students were told that they were good at a task. They didn’t try very hard the next time. Other students were told that they had worked hard at a task. They worked even harder the
next time. The first group of students was learning that they had a set amount of skill. They didn’t think they could do any better. This is called a fixed mindset (思维模式). The second group was learning that they could do better if they kept trying. This is called a growth mindset. People who have a growth mindset believe that the brain can grow; people can do better and learn new skills. If they work hard, they can be successful.
How can teachers and parents help students succeed? They can focus mainly on effort and not simply on ability. When students succeed, teachers and parents should praise the actual work rather than intelligence (智力)or talent. When students fail, they should be told how they can do better. As humans, we communicate using the senses of sight, touch, and hearing. We send messages with body language, we greet friends with touch, and we speak using words to show our feelings and ideas. Anima ls don’t communicate in as many ways as humans — for example, they don’t have language like we do — but many animals do also use the senses of sight, touch, and hearing. A good example of this is elephant communication.
Like humans, elephants understand ea ch other by looking at each other’s body language. To send a message, they use their whole body, or just their heads, eyes, mouth, ears, trunk, tail, or feet. For example, elephants spread their ears to show anger. And while humans shake their heads to disagree, elephants to do this to show they are happy.
As with humans, touch is also very important between elephants. Just like a human mother holds her baby, a mother elephant regularly touches her young baby with her trunk. Elephants also show they are friendly when they touch other elephants. And when they want to have fun, they hold each other by the trunk and pull. Even if they can’t laugh like a human, elephants have a great sense of humor.
Elephants have very large ears, which means they can hear other elephants from as far as 2.5 miles away. Like humans, they can also copy sounds and make their own sounds that seem to communicate basic human words and phrases like, “Hello.” “I love you.” and “Let’s go.”
So while it’s true that humans are amazing at communication, elephants also communicate in ways that we can’t, and that’s probably true for other animals, too. The next time your pet dog or cat looks at you, touches you, or makes a noise, it’s probably trying to tell you something very important!
13. How do elephants show they are happy?
A. By using their whole body.
B. By spreading their ears.
C. By shaking their head.
D. By touching other elephants.
14. According to the passage, what can elephants do?
A. They can copy sounds they hear.
B. They can speak with words.
C. They can laugh like a human.
D. They can have languages.
15. Which is the best structure of the passage? (①=Paragraph 1, ②=Paragraph 2,…)
A. B. C.D.
16. What's the purpose of writing the passage?
A. To tell why elephants have languages,
B. To express how smart elephants are.
C. To tell what elephants can do.
D. To tell how elephant communicate.
