Every month, people worldwide upload about 6 billion photos t o the Internet. Photography is now so common, it is easy to fo rget that photographs—and the memories they hold—
can be very precious.
In a cold, windowless basement in , there is a man who know s the real value of a photograph. Since 1983, Bill Bonner has l ooked after National Geographic’s photo archive(档案
馆). The archive holds around 8 million prints – many over 10 0 years old.

Deciding what to wear in the morning is a challenge for som e people. We often worry about what others will think of us be cause of our clothes. But researchers are beginning to think t hat our clothing has an equally powerful effect on how we see ourselves.
Scientists Adam Galinsky and Hajo Adams report that there is science behind our style. In their research, Galinsky and Ada ms had some participants(参与
者) wear white lab coats similar to the ones scientists or docto rs wear. Other participants wore their normal clothes. The part icipants took a test that measured their ability to pay attention. In the experiment, participants saw cards with different-colored words on them. They had to say the color of the word they saw, not the word itself. The people wearing the white la b coats said the correct color of the word more often. Galinsky and Adams think that the white coats made the parti cipants feel more confident and careful. The researchers also believe that other kinds of “symbolic” clothes can influence th e behavior of the people wearing them. A police officer’s unifo rm or a judge’s robe, for example, increases the wearer’s feeli ngs of power or confidence. And in workplaces that have a dr ess code, “symbolic” clothes may also affect how well employ ees do their jobs.
Fashion blogger Jessica Quirk believes that our clothes greatl y affect how we feel about ourselves. According to Quirk, “Th ere is joy and luck and confidence in what we wear.” On her b log called “What I wore,” Quirk posts a photo of what she’s we aring every day. She says that people should pay more attenti
on to what they wear. For example, we should choose a look t hat makes us feel more creative and happy. One way to do thi s at work is to “dress up for the exciting job we want,” she say s, “not the boring job we have.” Another way is to wear specia l clothes that mean something to us. For example, Quirk wear s one special pair of shoes to all her important meetings. The y are her “lucky” shoes.
As Quirk points out—and as researchers have discovered—our clothes are “like our second skin.” The clothes we wear ca n affect our behavior. They can also tell the world something about us, without us having to say a word.

In the warm, shallow waters of coral reefs live animals with a n amazing ability. These animals, known as cephalopods(头足纲动物), are able to change the appearance of their skin. Squid, octopi, and cuttlefish are all types of cephalopods. Eac h of these animals has special cells under its skin that contain pigment, a colored liquid. A cephalopod can move these cells
towards or away from its skin. This allows it to change the pat tern and color of its appearance,
Cephalopods mainly use these cells as camouflage to hide fro m predators. For example, cephalopods can blend in to the co lor of the sea floor, making them invisible to predators. They c an also change color to scare predators away. For example, t he skin of the reef squid is usually a plain brown. When a pre dator passes close by, the squid makes large “eyes” patterns on its skin. This makes the squid appear much bigger than it r eally is. Squid can also use these cells to communicate other messages. When two male reef squid fight, black and white li nes appear on their skin. These send a message that the squi d is fierce. A reef squid searching for a mate can flash colorful patterns, sending a message that it is attractive. Amazingly, reef squid can send two messages at the same ti me. They can send one message on their right side and a diff erent message on their left side. For example, when males ar e searching for a mate, they flash attractive patterns on one si de of their body. This is the side a female sees. On the other side of their bodies they can show their fierce zebra stripes. T hus is the side other males see. They can quickly flip the mes sages if the female swims to the other side!
With the ability to display 30 colors and patterns, the incredibl

To make other animals frightened.
69. Which word has the similar meaning to the word “predator s” in paragraph 3?
