The idea of micropayments--
- charging Web users tiny amounts of money for single pieces o f online content--
- was basically put to sleep toward the end of the dot-
com boom. In December 2000, Clay Shirky, a professor in New York University’s interactive telecommunications program (电信交互程序), wrote a manifesto (宣
言) that people still quote whenever someone suggests using t he idea. “Micropayme nts will never work,” he wrote, mainly bec ause “users hate them.”
But wait. Without many people noticing, micropayments have ar rived--
- just not in the way they were originally imagined. The 99 cents
you pay for a song on the Internet is a micropayment. So are th e tiny amounts that some operators of small web sites can earn whenever someone clicks on the ads on their pages. Some sto ck-photography companies sell pictures for as little as $1 each.“Micropayments are here” said Benjamin M. Companie, a lectur er at , “they just have not developed in the way that everybody expected.”
From the earliest days of the Web until around the time of Mr. S hirky’s manifesto, the expectation was that a handful of compan ies would provide platforms---or perhaps a single platform--
- that would enable Web users to pay a penny or a dollar for a b it of content such as a newspaper article, or a research report. Simply clicking a link would complete the transaction (转换). Sellers of content--- at the time, newspaper companies---
were among the most interested in the idea as they looked for t ax income that didn’t depend on advertising.
44.According to the first paragraph, we can infer that ________ .
A.people once failed to charge Web users
B.all the Internet companies can’t earn profit
C.it’s difficult for Web users to pay online
D.micropayment costs people too much

A.companies on the Internet would earn a lot of money B.Web users would never pay for the websites
C.it was impossible to visit websites for free
D.all the companies on the Internet would go bankrupt (破产).
46.You will have to pay for it, if you ________.
A.visit some famous websites
B.read latest news on the internet
C.advertise for your products on some websites D.download your favorite songs
47.What is expected by the sellers of content on the Internet? A.Better attitude from Web users.
B.Understanding from Web users.
C.A platform to help them realize micropayment.
D.More and more Web users.

Many people will remember the flight of the space shuttle (航天飞
机) Challenger, in June, 1983.The achievement of Sally Ride, America’s first woman astronaut to fly into space, made this flig
ht especially memorable. Students from two , , high schools, ho wever, are probably to remember Norma rather than Sally when ever they think about the flight.
Norma didn’t travel alone. She brought about 100 companions along with her. Norma was an ant, a queen ant who, with her su bject, made up the first ant colony (群
体) to travel into space. The ants were part of a science experi ment designed by students to test the effects of weightlessness on insects.
The equipment designed by the students for their colony functio ned perfectly throughout the long space trip. The young scientis ts and their teachers were very sad to find that their insect astro nauts had all died at some point before the container was return ed to the school and opened. The problem didn’t occur in space , but on the ground after challenger had landed. The container r emained in the desert for nearly a week before the ant colony w as moved. The hot, dry desert air dried out the colony’s contain er and the ants died from lack of moisture (水分).
The project was termed success because it did provide useful i nformation. Students will continue their efforts to pinpoint (精确找
到) what went wrong. They will try to prevent the same difficult ies from reoccurring on future missions. They don’t want to be d
iscouraged either by the demise of the ants or by the $10,000 s huttle fare they will have to pay to send the next colony of ants i nto space.
48.What does the passage mainly tell us?
A.Sally Ride, ’s first woman astronaut.

50.We don’t think the project was a failure. This is because __ _______.
A.everything went as smoothly as expected
B.the students had pinpointed exactly the reason C.something important had been learned
D.the students had succeeded in the experiment
51.We can conclude that ants __________ on the next space tr ip.
A.will have to be kept alive in a container full of water
B.will have to be sent into space with the first woman astrona

C.should be put into a container where there is enough food D.should be put into a container which is not too dry
