七、阅读理解(共13小题;共26分)
A
Some people are pessimistic(悲观的) when they think about the future. They say that, a hundred years from now, we will have used most of the earth's resources. We will have polluted our seas badly,
and be unable to eat fish from them. We will have made the air so dirty that we will need to wear masks. The world's population will have doubled, and we will have used all the countryside for housing; there will be no farmland left.
Other people believe that Man adapts very easily. They have a different idea of the future. How, in their views, will people be living in a hundred years' time?
One architect believes that man will move off the land. He suggests that the city of the future will be a huge, pyramid-shaped building, which will be floating on the surface of the sea. About 5,000 families will be living there, and the building will contain shops and schools as well as homes. By living on the sea, we will give the farmers more land to grow crops.
As for oil, people will no longer need it: we will be heating our homes with power from the sun. And we will not be short of minerals, because there are plenty under our oceans. At the moment, we do not have the technology to get them out. But, in a hundred years' time, the optimists say, the new sea cities will be using these resources.
What will be in the shops in the year 3000? What will people be wearing? How will people be traveling?
Scientists who make predictions about the future suggest that, by the year 3000, shops will no longer exist. Computers will have replaced them; and people will order goods from home.
People will be wearing very light, thin clothes. By this time, scientists will have invented a fabric that keeps us cool in hot weather and warm in cold weather.
As for travel, the experts say that most people will be using public transport. Electric cars will be traveling through the streets day and night. Anybody will be able to stop one and use it.
An interesting picture. Unfortunately, we will not be there to see if these predictions come true.
96. Pessimists believe that in the future .
A. the seas and oceans will be full of houses
B. we'll have used up all the resources
C. we will not have enough fish to eat from the seas
D. we will have polluted the air so badly that it will be impossible for us to breath
97. Optimists suggest that .
A. all the land will be too polluted to be cropped on
B. pyramids will be the most commonly—used houses
C. people will be using the power from the sun instead of oil
D. we will be short of materials even though we get them from under the oceans
98. Scientists have made the predictions EXCEPT .
A. electric cars will be going along the streets continuously
B. the resources under the oceans will never be used up
C. people will order from home
D. people won't suffer from cold any longer

Reading science fiction novels and stories to your children is a great way to develop their imaginations at an earlier age. Science fiction literature has accurately(准确地) predicted many of today's inventions; could this be because a young mind read about these inventions first and then made them happen?
Many parents don't choose to read science fiction to their children because it is more difficult to read than traditional bedtime stories. Here are some steps to follow to make it an enjoyable experience for both you and your child.
How to Choose Your Selection

Review each book and short story that you are considering reading to your child. As adults, we often forget that some books we have read contain inappropriate(不合适的) material for children. A review will highlight(强调) these passages so you can choose to skip over them, or choose another selection.
Step 2
Find a book or story short enough to hold your child's attention, yet long enough to keep him or her busy and looking forward to bedtime. Piers Anthony has many great books in the Science Fiction type that are perfect for children.
Step 3
Discuss your choice with your child and explain why you chose it, and why it is special to you. How to Read Your Choice to Your Child
Step 1
Read slowly, so that your child understands every word.
Step 2
Pause often, so he or she can ask questions. Be sure to answer all his or her questions in detail so that she follows the story line.
Step 3
Replace new words with ones that he or she will understand, or stop and explain the meaning of the word as a vocabulary building exercise.
Step 4
Read only until your child is tired. Otherwise, he or she may fall asleep and miss some of the story, or worse, grow bored with the process.

A robot is machine designed to work like a living person. The word robot was actually invented in 1920 by Karel Capek, a Czechoslovakian writer. But although the word is quite new, the idea of machines acting like people is very old. In the second century BC, Philon of Byzantium designed statues that performed clever tricks.
Today throughout the world thousands of real robots do many important tasks that help people. Robots can do many of the things that people do, as well as some things people can't do. Many of the tasks that robots perform are boring or actually unhealthy for people.
Some robots are built to explore places too dangerous for people to visit. They can take pictures and send back useful information without putting people at risk. One of the areas where robots explorers are used extensively is in space. Astronauts need special equipment to survive in space. Robots do not need air, water or food. They can work on distant planets keeping in touch with Earth by radio signals. NASA's Sojourner Rover was the very first robot to travel across part of another planet. In 1997, the six-wheeled rover explored part of the surface of Mars.
The test robot Afghan Explorer may one day visit war zones. Working as a war reporter, it could send pictures and interviews back to a TV station in a safer place. The Dante 2 is similar to the Afghan Explorer. This eight-legged robot can climb into the crater of a red-hot volcano to collect gas samples(样本) and take photos with its eight cameras. Nomad Rover, another robot explorer, is the size of a small car. It has trekked through hot deserts and icy lands on it own, collecting information for scientists at home.
Many robots work underwater. They map the ocean floor, monitor sea life or find sunken wrecks(残骸). These robots can travel deep underwater far more easily than people. Robots can stay underwater for many days at a time and travel hundreds of kilometres exploring the oceans. Underwater robots, such as Deep Drone, can travel to the ocean floor and help recover crashed aircraft or sunken ships. Deep Drone can travel around 40 times deeper than unprotected human divers.
Some robots are rescue robots: they can save lives. They do this by fighting fires, searching for survivors after disaster, or handling dangerous objects such as unexploded bombs. Bomb disposal robots can look at suspect packages with their cameras. They relay the information to someone at a safe distance.
As robot technology advances, our robots are becoming smarter and are able to help us with more and more aspects of our lives. Robots have enhanced our work efficiency greatly. Robots won't always be machines hidden away in dangerous factories. Work is already being done to develop robots which will help us in our kitchens or on our farms. What do you think robots might be doing to help us in the future?
106. Which of the following aspects is Not mentioned in the passage?
A. Military.
B. Astronomy.
C. Education.
D. Rescue.
107. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Robots: A Valuable Resource
B. Robots: Future Applications
C. Living in the Robot Age
D. Leading a Robot-Style Life
108. Which of the following is Not true according to the passage?
A. The Afghan Explorer has not been put in use yet.
B. The Dante 2 is used to collect information about volcanoes.
C. Nomad Rover can endure miserable weather conditions.
D. Deep Drone is designed to protect human divers.

Some experts feel that the automobile is to "die". They see a day in the not-too-distant future when all autos will be abandoned and allowed to become rotten iron and steel rubbish. 109. They think that the car will remain a leading means of urban travel in the near future. 110. It should become smaller, safer, and more money-saving, and should not be powered by the petrol engine. The car of the future should be far more pollution-free than present types.
Regardless of its power source, the auto in the future will still be the main problem in urban traffic jam. 111.
When the auto enters the freeway system, a retractable arm, which can be moved inwards or backwards, will drop from the auto and touch a rail that is similar to the subway trains electrically powered from the system, and control of the vehicle will pass to a central computer. 112.
The driver will use a telephone to dial instructions about his destination into the system. The computer will calculate the best route, and reserve space for the car all the way to the correct exit from the freeway. 113. It is guessed that an automated freeway will be able to handle 10,000 vehicles per hour, compared with the 1,500 to 2,000 vehicles that can be carried by a present-day freeway.
A. Other authorities, however, think the auto is here to stay.
B. The computer will then monitor all of the car's movements.
C. One proposed solution to this problem is the automated freeway system.
D. Experts have different views on what role autos will play in the near future.
E. The motorcar will undoubtedly change significantly over the next 30 years.
F. Drivers in the freeway system can sit back and do nothing but control the direction.
G. The driver will then be free to relax and wait for the sound speaker that will warn him of his coming exit.
