Ask Steveland Morris and he’ll tell you that blindness is not
necessarily disabling。
Steveland was born earlier than expected time and totally without sight in 1950.He became Stevie Wonder—composer, singer and pianist。
The winner of ten Grammy awards,Stevie is widely admired for his great contributions to the music world.
As a child,Stevie learned not to think about the things he could not do,but to fix his attention on the things that he could do。
His parents encouraged him to join his sighted brothers in as many activities as possible. They also helped him develop his sense of hearing, which is very important to a blind person.
Because sound was so important to him,Stevie began at an early age to experiment with different kinds of sound。
He would bang things and then imitate(模仿)the sound with his voice.Often depending on sound for entertainment,he sang, beat on toy drums, played a toy harmonica(口琴)and listened to the radio。
Stevie soon graduated from toy instruments to real instruments。
He first learned to play the drums。
He then mastered the harmonica and the piano. He became a member of the junior church choir and a lead singer. In the evenings and on weekends,Stevie would play different instruments and sing popular songs in the front of neighbors' homes。
One of Stevie’s recordings was overheard(偶然听到)by Ronnie White,a member of a popular singing group called The Miracles.Ronnie immediately recognized Stevie's gift and took him to audition for Berry
Gordy, the president of Histville USA,a large recording company now known as Motown。
Stevie recorded his first hit “Fingertips” in 1962 at the age of twelve, and the rest of Stevie's story is music story.
56From the first four paragraphs we know ______.
A.Stevie couldn’t see,neither could he hear
B.Stevie couldn't see,but he could hear
C.Stevie was born with sight but lost it when he grew up
D.no one taught Stevie to speak,so he could only imitated the sound he made by banging things
57By saying “Stevie soon graduated from toy instruments to real instruments。
”,the writer means ______.
A.Stevie started to play real instruments instead of toy ones
B.Stevie graduated from a school teaching toy instruments and went to another one teaching real instruments
C.Stevie grew up and he didn't want to play with toys any more

It was a Sunday and the heavy storm had lasted all night. The morning after the storm, though, was beautiful: blue skies, warm air and a calm, inviting sea touching the shore gently.
My father realised it was a good day for fishing and invited my sister and me to go with him。
I was only 14 and fishing had never been my thing, but I decided to go all the same.I'm_so_glad_I_did.
On the road to the harbour we could see the terrible destruction on the coast, but the harbour itself was in fairly good shape. After all,it was protected by the arms of a bay that had only one tiny channel to the sea。
As we got on board,we noticed two big humps(脊背)in the distance.
On approaching them,we saw it was a mother whale with her baby。
We couldn't believe it-there aren’t any whales along the coast here。
The storm must have driven them across the ocean into the bay,in which the still water was so badly polluted that nothing could survive。
The little baby whale—actually as big as our boat-was obviously stuck and could not move。
The mother dived under the water and came up suddenly, making big whirlpools(漩涡)and waves.“She’s trying to help her baby, but on the wrong side,” my father said.At this point,my father moved our boat in a semicircle to the other side and, heading the boat towards the baby whale, pushed it gently。
With our several gentle pushes the big hump turned over and disappeared under water. Then it swam up right beside its mum. They struggled in their desperate attempts to escape
but missed the exit and started heading in the wrong direction. We hurried up to the whales and tried to lead them towards the bay channel。
Slowly, they let us lead them, sometimes rising from the water right beside us to breathe—and to give us a trusting look with those huge eyes.Once they hit their first part of clean water flowing straight from the sea,the mum gave us a wave with her tail and off they swam into the distance.
In the excitement it had felt like only a few minutes, but we had been with those wonderful animals for almost an hour and a half。
That was the simple and lasting beauty of the day.Nearly four decades later,I still look back fondly to that golden day at sea.
59The author says “I’m so glad I did.”(in Para。
2)because ______。
A.he witnessed the whole process of fishing
B.he enjoyed the beauty of the calm sea
C.he experienced the rescue of the whales
D.he spent the weekend with his family
60The harbour survived the storm owing to ______.
A.the shape of the harbour
B.the arms of the bay
C.the still water in the channel
D.the long coast line
61The mother whale failed to help her baby because ______。
A.she had stayed in the polluted water for too long
B.the whirlpools she had made were not big enough
C.she had no other whales around to turn to for help
D.the waves pushed her baby in the wrong direction
62What is the theme of the story?

C
Things always seem different from its normal times to people when he or she is not feeling well。
Perhaps, many of us know this rule, but we do not care about it.At such times, things make life hard for people in little ways。
For example, when I am not in good condition,I can never find the things I need.To my surprise,it seems that the things I need have moved from all the places where I expect to find them。
If I need something,I can never find it quickly.
Sometimes when we are not well,we will find that boxes become heavier when lifting them, that doors don't want to open much more easily when trying opening them, that wind becomes even colder when facing it,that the sun becomes much hotter when under it,that cars don't run better when driving it and the distances are longer than they were when we felt fine.
Why does it happen? The things around us usually do what they
should do as long as we are well and strong。
But when_we_aren’t_in_good_condition,things_often_tell_us_ that_they_are_
really_not_our_friends_but_our_enemies。
It is wrong。
In fact, everything keeps the same.Only because we are disturbed by the bad mood,we get the wrong feeling that everything is in the opposite direction against us。
If we keep calm in the bad times, things will be the same as usual.
63Things make life hard for people in little ways because ______。
A.people don't care about their feeling when not feeling well
B.life is hard itself
C.people don’t know that life is different when they are not feeling well
D.they are not feeling well
64According to this article, why does the writer feel everything is unusual in bad condition?
A.Because everything has changed。
B.Because the writer has changed everything.
C.Because the bad conditions influence his finding the right things.
D.Because the writer feels very sad and does not want to find the right things.
65What does the underlined sentence mean?
A.When we feel bad, things do not look like our enemies.
B.When we feel good,we can know something about our enemies。
C.When we feel bad, things can help us as our friends.
D.When we feel good,we feel that things are our friends.
66What does the writer want to tell us in this article?
A.When we are in bad condition,we can feel that everything is unusual.
B.When we are in good condition,we find that boxes become heavier than usual。
C.If we meet trouble,we should keep calm.
D.If we meet trouble,we should find ways to get ourselves out of it.

Michael Fish may soon be replaced as a weather forecaster by something truly fishier—the shark(鲨鱼).
Research by a British biology student suggests that sharks could be used to predict storms。
Lauren Smith,24,is close to completing her study on sharks' ability to sense pressure。
If her studies prove the theory, scientists may be able to monitor the behaviour of sharks to predict bad weather.
Miss Smith had previously studied the behaviour of lemon sharks in the Bahamas.
She then used their close relatives, lesser spotted dogfish(角鲨鱼),for further research at Aberdeen University.
Her work—thought to be the first of its kind to test the pressure
theory-resulted from the observation that juvenile blacktip sharks off Florida moved into deeper water ahead of a violent storm in 2001。
Miss Smith said,“I’ve always been crazy about travelling and diving and this led me to an interest in sharks.”
“I was delighted to have been able to research in the area for my degree.I know there’s so much more we need to understand—but it certainly opens the way to more research。
”
It has been discovered that a shark senses pressure using hair cells in its balance system。
At the Bimini Shark Lab in the Bahamas,Miss Smith fixed hi-tech sensors to sharks to record pressure and temperature, while also tracking them using GPS (Global Positioning System)technology。
In Aberdeen, she was able to study the effects of tidal(潮汐的)and temperature changes on dogfish—none of which were harmed。
She also used a special lab which can mimic(模拟)oceanic pressure changes caused by weather fronts。
She is due to complete her study and graduate later this year. She says she will be looking for a job which will give her the chance to enrich her experience of shark research.
67The passage is most probably taken from ______。
A.a short-story collection
B.a popular science magazine
C.a research paper
D.a personal diary
68What do we learn from the first four paragraphs of the passage?
A.Sharks may be used to predict bad weather。
B.Sharks’ behaviour can be controlled。
C.Michael Fish is not qualified for his job。
D.Lauren Smith will become a weather forecaster.
69Lauren Smith conducted her research by ______.
A.removing hair cells from a shark's balance system
B.measuring the air pressure of weather fronts
C.recording sharks’ body temperature
D.monitoring sharks' reaction to weather changes
70What is the passage mainly about?
A.A popular way of forecasting weather.
B.A new research effort in predicting storms.
C.Biologists’ interest in the secrets of sharks.
D.Lauren Smith's devotion to scientific research。
第四部分:任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)
请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词.注意:每个空格只填一个单词。
For more than twenty years scientists have been seeking to understand the mystery of the “sixth sense"of direction。
By trying out ideas and solving problems one by one, they are now getting closer to one
answer.
One funny idea is that animals might have a built-in compass(指南针).
Our earth itself is a big magnet(磁体).So a little magnetic needle that swings freely lines itself with the big earth magnet to point north and south. When people discovered that idea about a thousand years ago and invented the compass,it allowed sailors to navigate(航海)on ocean voyages, even under cloudy skies.
Actually the idea of the living compass came just from observing animals in nature。
Many birds migrate twice a year between their summer homes and winter homes. Some of them fly for thousands of kilometers and mostly at night。
Experiments have shown that some birds can recognize star patterns。
But they can keep on course even under cloudy skies. How can they do that?
A common bird that does not migrate but is great at finding its way home is the homing pigeon. Not all pigeons can find their way home. Those that can are very good at it,and they have been widely studied。
One interesting experiment was to attach little magnets to the birds’heads to block their magnetic sense—just as a loud radio can keep you from hearing a call to dinner。
On sunny days, that did not fool the pigeons。
Evidently they can use the sun to tell which way they are going。
But on cloudy days, the pigeons with magnets could not find their way。
It was as if the magnets had blocked their magnetic sense.
Similar experiments with the same kind of results were done with honeybees。
These insects also seem to have a special sense of direction.
In spite of the experiments, the idea of an animal compass seemed pretty extraordinary. How would an animal get the magnetic stuff for a compass?
An answer came from an unexpected source.A scientist was studying bacteria that live in the mud of ponds and marshes。
He found accidentally little rod-like bacteria that all swam together in one direction—north.
Further study showed that each little bacterium had a chain of dense particles inside, which proved magnetic. The bacteria had made themselves into little magnets that could line up with the earth's magnet.
The big news was that a living thing, even a simple bacterium, can make magnetite。
That led to a search to see whether animals might have it。
By using a special instrument called magnetometer, scientists were able to find magnetite in bees and birds, and even in fish。
In each animal, except for the bee,the magnetic stuff was always in or closer to the brain.
Thus, the idea of a built-in animal compass began to seem reasonable.
