My youngest eagerly entered kindergarten, while my oldest excitedly started college and I felt left behind. After being very happy as a stay-at-home mother of six children, I suddenly felt disappointed on a dead-end road and surrounded by a lack of direction. An inner anxiety troubled me that life was passing by. The road, requiring expensive education, appeared too long and difficult.
Thanks to supportive friends and family, I eventually discovered the road sign pointing to the ideal program at an excellent college, which offered a lot of tuition grants (学费资助). With anxiety and fear, I went to the college at age forty. Driving to my first master's class, I was as eager and nervous as children for the first day of school.
School required sacrifices: weekends for class, sleep for study, and life's extra money for tuition payments. Yet, as with all good things, the rewards greatly outweighed the cost. The narrow, rocky road developed will power and patience, while the smooth, open road built low confidence. Along the way, I met companions of all ages and interests: a 50-year-old woman who took part in photography classes at the college; a 62-year-old successful businessman who worked toward a nursing degree to serve in developing countries; an 80-year-old woman who enthusiastically started classes to use the Internet, so she could keep up with the world.
This past May, twelve years after starting the journey as a non-traditional student, I graduated with a doctoral degree in literature one week before our youngest child graduated from college. All six children have been especially proud, lovingly calling me “Dr. Mom”. Never could I have imagined the wild rush and great travel of this ride back to school. When you hear the small, still voice urging you to do something more or different, remember you
can trust your heart.

C
(2012·阜阳三中期末考试)Many businesses today use conferences as a means of discussing new plans of the company. As people are paying more attention to the environment and green problems, more businesses are looking for ways to reduce their negative effect on the environment. Many businesses do this by using Web conferencing.
Web conferencing is a technology that allows people to communicate more effectively over the Internet. It's an easy way of hosting and attending conferences without having to leave the office. Each of the people involved in a Web conference will be posted an invitation to the conference with the time and date of the Web conference on it. When the conference is ready to begin, all participants (参与者) must sit at their computers and they will be connected over the Internet.
With Web conferencing all participants attend the conference from the comfort of their own desk. Obviously, in doing this no fuel is used in traveling to and from a conference, and less work time is taken up in attending a conference.
Any material to be used during Web conferencing is simply e-mailed to all the participants before the conference. Participants can then either choose to print material or read it on screen. This not only saves paper but also greatly reduces mailing costs for the business.
As a conference hall or business center isn't being used, it means that the only power that is used is the power used by the participants' personal computers. Similarly conference organizers don't have to arrange for food or overnight accommodation(住宿) for participants of their conferences. All this means that less energy is used.
Often in business some companies actively choose to do business with other companies that do many things to reduce their negative impact on the environment. And Web conferencing helps you show other businesses that you are willing to work hard for the green cause.
So Web conferencing is much cheaper and greener and more people are willing to host and attend a Web conference.

In a little-known part of the counter-terrorism (反恐怖主义) world, one of the most effective detection systems is a 600-pound animal that works for about 20 pounds of fish a day.
Since the 1960s, the United States and a handful of other countries have trained dolphins and sea lions to detect sea mines and swimmers, and to recover worn-out torpedoes
(鱼雷) and testing objects used in naval (海军的) exercises.
The U.S. Navy kept its Marine Mammal Program a secret until the 1990s, and this spring CNN became one of the first- members of the media to witness firsthand how the program works.
The program trains about 75 Pacific bottlenose dolphins, with natural biosonar (生物声呐) that tracks better than any man-made device; and 35 California sea lions, with very good underwater eyesight.
Not only do these trained marine mammals track and save millions of dollars in U.S. military equipment, they are also helping to save lives. The Navy won't reveal whether the dolphins and sea lions have effectively stopped terrorists attempting to do harm to the U.S.
A key part of the training program is teaching these mammals how to stop potentially unfriendly swimmers. The program is also positioned to defend against swimmer terrorist attacks as well.
In the digital age, it seems that there should be more advanced approaches to guard the Navy's most expensive things. But according to Rothe, the program director, nothing in today's high-technology world can compete with these mammals' biosonar abilities. “I hope that one day there is a robot or a UUV (unmanned underwater vehicle) that makes the mammal program out of date,”he said. “But right now this is the best thing out there.”
语篇解读:海洋动物也可以参与反恐,为国家安全尽力。

(2012·莆田一中质检)To American visitors, Iceland is a very interesting country, partly because it is different in so many ways from what he or she is used to seeing at home. There are quite a few things that are not done, or that do not exist on the island —quite a few “No's”.
There is no pollution, for instance. No dogs are permitted in Reykjavik, the capital. There is no television on Thursdays or during the entire month of July, and only three hours of black-and-white TV the rest of the time. There is no hard liquor on Wednesdays and no beer at any time. There are no handguns; only one jail of thirty-five cells in the entire land — an admirable figure, even for a small country of 313,376 people.
There is no army, air force or navy. There is no tipping for anything. There are no large stores open on Saturdays or Sundays. Since Iceland is situated just under the Arctic Circle, there is no darkness in summer and no daylight in winter. But thanks to Gulf Stream, the climate is rather mild, with temperatures ranging from 34 degrees Fahrenheit to 52 degrees in July.
The rules on television, liquor, and guns are the result of governmental decision. But the absence of pollution is due in great part to the fact that Iceland gets its power from the enormous geyser(间歇泉)and the thousands of hot springs that come out of the ground. They provide all the energy needed by the country. In fact, Iceland uses only 3 percent of all its available power.
Iceland has been described as a democratic independent country where more fish are caught and more books published per person than anywhere else in the world. The Icelanders have always felt a particular love for literature. They composed their first works in the ninth and tenth centuries AD. These works were poems and tales about the kings, heroes, and heroines of Iceland and Norway. At first the stories were memorized and passed from generation to generation. They were finally written down between 1140 and 1220. The Icelanders have never stopped writing ever since. “Rather shoeless than bookless”,they proudly say.
A.no dogs are permitted in the capital
B.the police do not carry handguns
C.the climate is rather mild
D.it is very different from America

You can achieve this by following some basics and including them in your daily diet as well. However, before kick starting a healthy diet to lose weight plan, make this clear —don't expect an overnight success. Though a healthy diet for a healthy weight loss goal can be set in weeks, it will be more rewarding, if you can stand the changes in the long term.
The best healthy diet plan to lose weight should ensure that your body refuses the large amount of proteins, fats, minerals and vitamins. Something Special for Parents
Not long ago, Student Union in our school advocated that Senior Three students should
do something special for their parents on their 18th birthday. All the students were actively in response to it and most of them have come up with their ideas. Some choose to write a letter, saying it's the best way to express their appreciation as well as love for their dearest parents. Others prefer to cook a big meal to show that they've already grown up.
As for me, I tend to do up hair, wash feet and cut fingernails for my parents. By doing what parents have been doing for me I can really know how much they devote to bringing me up. Also, being eighteen years old means it's time that I should take responsibility to take care of them.
