第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
21.(6分)Kids seem to spend endless hours on smartphones, computers and tablets these days. The best thing parents can do to prevent it is to encourage youngsters to spend more time outdoors in the sunlight.
There has been a massive rise around the globe in short-sightedness—or myopia as it’s officially known—over recent decades. Myopia or short-sightedness is becoming more common. Lack of natural light seems to be the key issue. “The main factor seems to be a lack of exposure to direct sunlight, because children who study a lot and who use computers or smartphones or tablet computers a lot have less opportunity to run around outside and are less exposed to sunshine and because of that children seem to be at more risk of developing shortsightedness.”
Professor Hammond says, “It may be there’s no coincidence that in East Asian countries, the most myopic ones all relate may to be the that maths league tables(排名表). These kids are being pushed with very intensive education from a very young age and spend a lot of time indoors studying close up. Therefore the concern is that all close work—like playing with the iPhone—carries the potential that it could make them more shortsighted.”
The best thing to do, say the experts, is to get children playing outside as much as possible. “In a perfect world, probably on average across the week and the weekend, two hours a day outdoors is protective of becoming short-sighted in children. Healthy diet is really also important—in terms of getting oily fish, green vegetables, green leafy vegetables as much as possible.
“What we need to look at is ways of modifying the impact that these activities have on their visual development.” Professor Hammond said, “There are eye drops and other treatments to slow myopia progression. But in terms of preventing myopia itself, there isn’t any data out there at the moment in terms of the question, ‘Could the drops we use slow progression or stop myopia developing at all? ‘ ”
1、What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Much natural light. B.Running around outside.

A.It appears quite by chance. B.It is not serious enough.
C.It largely relate to iPad or iPhone. D.It connects with their study pressure.
3、What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.The myopic students will decrease in the future.
B.Researchers have found methods to reduce myopia.
C.It’s still a hard job to control the children’s myopia.
D.Researchers needn’t collect any more data on myopia.
4、What is the best title for the text?
A.Common troubles of students
B.Problems caused by short-sightedness
C.Staying outdoors more to keep good eyesight
D.The importance of protecting kids
22.(8分)Susan was born as the ninth child in a Catholic family. She suffered from learning disabilities ever since her birth because of her mother’s poor health.
School was difficult for Susan and she was bullied because of her different behaviors. Her siblings, who were much older, had life experiences that were unknown to their little sister. From the time of her birth, Susan was a screamer. The only really safe place that she would use as a repeat was her bedroom. There she would hang posters of her musical idols on the wall and sing popular music into a hairbrush that she pretended was a microphone.
One by one the siblings moved away from home and then Susan’s father died. This left her alone with an aging mother and a cat. The siblings accused her mother of not expecting more out of Susan. She had seen many professionals and remembered hearing the word “borderline” but didn’t know what it meant. She tried volunteer work. Her best state of mind, however, was found when she was singing and so she would regularly join others in karaoke or pubs where she could show her skills and receive appreciation from the crowd.
When Susan announced at Christmas that she was planning to compete in the Britain’s Got Talent contest, her siblings tried to discourage her. It was a wonder that she was even able to do the audition considering the troubles she faced just physically getting to the right place.
“The Woman I Was Born to Be” is a beautiful story written in the simple but humorous voice of the author, Susan Boyle. She tells her story from birth to the present in an interesting and educational manner. The writing is supplemented by photos from her albums.
I love this book! In fact, I read the whole thing in one day!

23.(8分)Encouraging life to bloom(兴旺) in the middle of a desert is no easy task. But one company in the United Arab Emirat es has come up with a plan to provide drinking water for the state’s citizens. The company intends to drag icebergs from Antarctica to the gulf coast in order to harvest its freshwater.
The company plans to source the massive blocks of ice from Heard Island, around 600 miles off the coast of mainland Antarctica. It will then transport them around 5,500 miles to Fujarirah, one part of the UAE. One iceberg could provide enough water for one million people over five years, according to the company.
The company’s director says they have already travelled the transportation route and checked the possibility of the scheme, according to reports in Gulf News. Speaking to the site about what he is calling the UAE Iceberg Project, Abdullah Mohammad Sulaiman Al Shehi s aid, “We have made the technical and financial plan. We will start the project at the beginning of 2018. We want it mainly for the water. It could also be good for tourism and the weather.”
The UAE is one of the driest countries in the world, due to its extremely arid climate, which receives less than four inches of rainfall per year. Despite that, it consumes more water than double the global national average, putting the country at severe risk of droughts over the next 25 years.
An average iceberg contains more than 20 billion gallons of water, according to the company. The iceberg takes a long time to melt as 80 percent of it is underwater, while the white ice above reflects sunlight and deflects(使转向) its heat. Blocks of ice will be placed in giant tanks, before being processed. “This is the purest water in the world.” Mr. Al Shehi added.
1、What can we learn about the UAE project?
A.It will help the UAE harvest freshwater.
B.It will encourage life to boom in Antarctica.
C.It will put the UAE at severe risk of droughts.
D.It will completely change the climate in the UAE.
2、Where could the block of ice come from?
A.The Atlantic Ocean. B.Fujariah.
C.The Gulf. D.Heard Island.
3、Which of the following may NOT benefit from the project?
A.The local people. B.Antarctica.
C.The weather. D.Tourism.
4、The author mentions the nature of ice in the last paragraph to show ________.

25.(10分)Scientists fear rising energy bills may lead to an increase in obesity (肥胖)after discovering a link between poorly-heated homes and higher body -fat.
Researchers from the University of Stirling’s Behavioural Science Centre set out to explore claims that warm indoor temperatures have contributed to rising obesity levels in winter.Instead, the team found that people who live in well-heated homes are more likely to have low body mass index (体重指数)levels while those who keep their heating turned down or off tend to be heavier.
Dr Michael Daly, behavioral scientist and senior lecturer, said: "We set out to investigate the scientific claims that cooler indoor temperatures help us maintain a healthy weight by pushing our bodies to use up more energy. In fact, the research suggests people may eat less and burn more energy when in a warmer indoor environment. The 13-year study, published in the journal Obesity, involved more than 100,000 adults across England.
Researchers found reduced weight levels among people living in homes heated to above 23°C(73F), which involved about 15,000 of the households studied.
Dr Daly said: "As national gas bills continue to rise faster than the rate of inflation, this research suggests the obesity could worsen where heating is turned down below comfortable levels or off for long periods to cut costs."
This is not just about people who live in well-heated homes being in the financial position to afford more expensive low-calorie foods, exercise classes and sporting activities, and therefore finding it easier to maintain a low BMI level. The study took age, sex, social class and other factors into account.
"The comfortable temperature of 20°C -23°C is where we feel comfortable in our clothes and are neither hot nor cold.At temperatures above this, we use more energy and we eat less because our appetite is affected."

C.funny D.encouraging
2、According to the passage, with rising gas bills, people may turn down or off their heating to______.
A.stay in shape B.maintain a low BMI level

3、Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A.Obesity links to poorly-heated homes
B.Well-heated home's contribute to obesity
C.Obesity--- A weighty problem in England
