When my daughter and my son were in their teens, they wanted to spend most of their free time with their friends. But there were always those special times when we were
reminded again how much we loved one another.
Make a Date with Your Teen
I recall how delighted my 14-year-old daughter, Ali sa, felt when I asked her to
see a movie,Cinema Paradiso, and I wanted this story to give her a sense of what it
had felt like for me to grow up as an Italian boy in a small town, where life was simple.
I wanted her to know better how her father had been brought up. But I made it very clear that what I wanted most was a special date with my daughter.
I knew she would—because I knew her. I decided we should complete our evening with
some lively conversation at a nearby bakery. I told her the movie was now so much more
special for me because I had shared it with her. She smiled. She understood.
Seize the Moment
I saw my 13-year-old son, Jason, tearfully searching our vegeta ble garden for a place to bury his pet boa constrictor( 大蟒蛇 ). Because my son had suffered with asthma and allergies (哮喘和过敏), he could never have the dog, the faithful friend that he
wanted so much.
We dug the grave, said our goodbyes and then he cried. He asked me why every pet
he owned died so soon. I just held him close. We both knew something happened that day
in the garden. He let me hold his aching soul.
Share your heart with your teens. Show them repeatedly that you know and love who
they really are. There are tender memories waiting to be made.

If you're out for a walk and a bird in a tree says to you “Hello there !”,don't worry, you're not going mad.
Naturalists have reported a growing phenomenon of pet parrots that have been taught to repeat phrases by their owners before escaping from their cages and then passing
on the technique to the wild flocks they join.“Hello there!”“ Hello darling!”
and “What's happen ing ?” are among the chorus of comments that flocks of wild birds
have been repeating after picking up words and sentences from other birds that were
once household pets.
Naturalist Martyn Robinson said:“We've had people calling us thinking they've
had something put into their drink because they've gone out to look at the flock of
birds in their back yard and all the birds have been saying something like‘Who's a pretty boy, then?’”
Mr. Robinson, who is based at the Australian Museum in Sydney, said the usual
sequence of events saw a caged parrot of some kind which had been taught phrases but
had then made its escape. It would then join a wild flock and chatter away in the trees, its words being learned by younger birds in the flock. The older ones would be unlikely to start learning. When chicks are born, they hear the words being spoken by the older
birds and grow up repeating the phrases. And so it continues, generation after generation.
Mr. Robinson said that because of a drought in the western regions of New South
Wales, flocks of wild bird“speakers” among them have been flying to Sydney, where
more food is available, and have been hanging around suburban gardens.
From the tree tops in gardens, from chimney pots and lamp posts, the flocks have
been talking away, leaving many people wondering if their minds were playing tricks
on them.
“These birds are very is important between them
smart and very social, meaning that communication and contact ,” said Mr. Robinson.“I just hope a pet bird that's been
going around the back gardens. ”

In 1834, Walter Hunt built America's first successful sewing machine. He
had no interest in patenting because he believed his invention would cause unemployment. Hunt never patented and in 1846, Elias Howe patented “a process that used thread
from two different sources ”.
Elias Howe's machine had a needle with an eye at the point. The needle was pushed
through the cloth and created a loop on the other side; a shuttle ( 梭子 ) on a track then slipped the second thread through the loop, creating what is called the lockstitch ( 双线连锁缝纫法) .
However, Elias Howe later met problems defending his patent and marketing his invention. Sewing machines didn't go into mass production until the 1850s, when Isaac Singer built the first commercially successful machine. Singer built the first sewing machine where the needle moved up and down rather than from side to side and the needle was powered by foot instead of by hand. However, Isaac Singer's machine used the same lockstitch. Elias Howe took Isaac Singer to court and won in 1854. Walter Hunt's
sewing machine also used a lockstitch with two spools ( 线轴 ) of thread and an
eye-pointed needle; however, the courts supported Howe's patent since Hunt had given
up his patent.
After successfully defending his right, Elias Howe saw his income jump from three
hundred to more than two hundred thousand dollars a year. Between 1854 and 1867, Howe earned two million dollars from his invention. Elias Howe died in 1867, the year his patent ran out.

(2012·晋江四校第二次联考 )If you see the popular documentary, A Bite of China, then you'll have an idea of what it's like to take a bite of Chinese food culture. But do you know what it's like to have a bite of America?
The first difference from China can be summed up in the word
“money”. Always remember to give tips when you eat out in America.
In most Chinese restaurants, you do not tip the waiters and
waitresses. But in America, not tipping is considered rude. Last
summer in the United States, we paid as much as 15 percent in tips
in some restaurants. It seems high, but this tip rate is quite
normal.
Additionally ( 此外 ), in the United States, it is considered polite for a restaurant to serve all dishes at once so everyone eats their own dish at the same time. In China, dishes are served as soon as they are finished to maximize ( 最大化 ) efficiency. Once
I ate out with my friends in a restaurant in China, and my friends had to wait for me
to finish eating for almost half an hour because my meal came so much later. I personally like it that all dishes are served at the same time in the United States.
The flavor of American food is best described as “juicy ”. Steak is an American favorite and American people often ask for their steak only to be half-cooked so as
to make it juicier.
American people also put lots of tasty sauces onto their plates. These complement
( 增补 ) the main ingredients of the food and make it taste even better, though they often make the food less healthy at the same time. It is common to add ketchup ( 番茄酱 ) and mustard to hotdogs, for example. Americans have tried copying traditional Chinese food in their many “Chinese restaurants ”. They modify ( 改正) Chinese food by adding much more oil to make the taste stronger. However, I dislike American-modified Chinese food because they add too much fat. Nevertheless, I recommend you to try real American food, especially if you are a meat-lover.
There are so many aspects of American food culture that it is impossible to cover
all of them in a short space. Wecannot know all the aspects of a certain food culture, but we can learn about it, taste it, understand and respect it — and enjoy it.
语篇解读:假如你看了美食类纪录片《舌尖上旳中国》,你就会想认识中国旳饮食文化,但你
能否想尝一尝美国旳滋味?
48. What is the article mainly about?
A.Good table manners in America.
B.Differences between Chinese and American food.
C.The author's impression of American food culture. D.How to deal with different food cultures.
分析:选 C. 要旨粗心题. 由第一段“ then you'll have an idea of what it's a bite of Chinese culture and food. But do you know what it's like to have a bite of America ?”可知,下文要谈旳就是美国旳饮食文化,最后一段响应首段,再次提到了“like to take There
are so many aspects of American food culture
in a short space.”,所以答案为 C.
that it is impossible to cover all of them
49. In the US, it is considered polite to ________.
A.give a tip to those who help you
B.serve all dishes together
C.serve food separately as quickly as possible
D.give waiters and waitresses a 5 percent tip
分析:选 B. 细节理解题. 由第二段可知在美国用餐,人们往常给服务员小费,并且往常
是很正常旳,所以 D 项 a 5 percent tip不对;文中没有说起在美国人们要给全部供给帮助旳
人小费,所以 A 项不对;由第三段“ it is considered polite for a restaurant to serve 15% all
dishes at once so everyone eats their own dish at the same time ”可知,在美国全部点
餐食品是一同端上桌旳,所以 B 正确, C项不对 .
50. What can we conclude from the article?
A.Traditional American food tends to be juicy but heavy.
B.Real Chinese food is becoming popular in the US.
C.The author prefers local American food to traditional Chinese food.
D.The author thinks Chinese food tastes better and is healthier than American food.
分析:选 A. 推理判断题. 由第四段旳“ The flavor of American food is best described as
‘juicy ’.”以及第五段旳“ American people also put lots of tasty sauces onto their
plates. These complement the main ingredients of the food and make it taste even
What
is the author's attitude toward the modified Chinese food in America? A.He likes
its strong taste.
B.He doesn't like the amount of sauce that goes with it.
C.He thinks it is not very healthy.
D.He thinks it would taste better if added more oil to it.
分析:选 C. 推理判断题. 由第五段“ However, I dislike American modified Chinese food
because it adds too much fat.”可推知 C 为正确答案.
E
Pants or trousers? Candy or sweets? Which word do you choose
in the American English versus British English war?
British children are increasingly using American English and
spelling in their writing, according to a report based on entries
( 参赛作品 ) to a BBC short story competition.
Oxford University Press studied around 74,000 entries. In the stories, written by pupils aged between 7and 13, Americanisms such as“trash can”,“candy”,“sidewalk ”and “soda”were found in many of the entries. The use of American words was not the only trend. The study found that punctuation (标点符号) like exclamation marks ( 惊讶号 )were used “too much” by the children.Researchers found 35,171 examples in total, with some young writers using five exclamation marks at a time.
Another report by the Atlantic Wire last month showed similar findings in the
US. According to the paper, the US was facing“a crisis of overusing exclamation marks”.
Popular US fiction, such as the Twilight( 《暮光之城》) vampire(吸血鬼) novels and films, is thought to be encouraging the use of American vocabulary and spelling
in the UK.
Modern technology has also played a part. Many translation services, spell
and text messaging devices (设置) are designed in American English. According to the
BBC, characters in the children's stories often“谷歌d” for information or used
checkers,
“apps”.
“The future of written English will owe more to Hollywood films than Dickens or Shakespeare ,” said Laura Clark, reporter for the Daily Mail.
She could be right in another way too—both the studies showed that kids in
the UK and the US were obsessed with celebrity culture—and some of the celebrities
were similar across the Atlantic. The BBC reported Canadian singer Justin Bieber
appeared in many stories, although so did famous TV talent show judge Simon Cowell and soccer star Lionel Messi. In the US, according to a Yahoo commentary (议论), “celebrity was something that was central to American society today”,with Paris Hilton and Brad Pitt topping the list.

Dysphagia ( 吞咽困难 ) means difficulty in swallowing food items and these food items may be solid and liquid in nature. People suffer from dysphagia when there is a problem with the muscles which play a very important part in the swallowing of the food. It
can be a weak tongue or facial muscles which make it hard to move the food in the mouth. In some instances people having weak throat muscles also suffer from dysphagia.
There is no need to worry if the patient has been diagnosed with dysphagia, as
there are lots of ways to deal with the problem. To deal with dysphagia, first of all,
don't miss your doctor's
appointments as medical
treatment is the sure way of achieving
success in this case. In many cases patients might be advised to consult a specialist
for a second opinion or
for better
treatment.
A qualified
doctor
can assist the patient
in picking up the right kind of food.
Having an erect posture (
直立姿势 ) while eating is also very important. Sitting
upright with shoulders in level and back straight up is considered a healthy posture while eating. Avoid leaning forward to taste the food. Smell the food before taking
a bite as this will encourage the production of saliva (
唾液 ) which facilitates the
passage of the food down the throat and into the esophagus (
食道).
In addition, people suffering from dysphagia just can not eat anything that they
want. They should avoid
eating hard foods, dried meats and foods which have to be broken
apart for eating. Food has to be eaten very slowly and should be consumed by taking
small portions.
People having problems with swallowing their food are advised to control their food habits for a little while. These people can also take the guidance of an experienced dietitian to make their daily diet better.
