Teaching procedures:
Step 1. Discovering useful words and expressions
First summarize the information in the text. This could be done as a whole class exercise with the teacher proving guidance, as a group activity or in pairs, depending on the ability of the students. Then do exercises.
Discovering useful words and expressions (Page28)
1 Go over the new words and phrases in the previous sections. Then complete each sentence with one of those new words or phrases.
2 Look at the two graphs on page 26. Then complete the paragraphs about them with appropriate words.
Step 2. Discovering useful structures
1. The reading passage contains examples of the use of the emphatic “it”. The emphatic “it” is when the writer wants to put extra emphasis or importance on a certain part of the sentence.
Gramma r: the use of “It”
It is(was) +被强调部分+that(who) + 句子的其余部分
Mr Lin teaches us English now. →
(1) It is Mr Lin who teaches us English now.
(2) It is English that Mr Lin teaches us now.
(3) It is now that Mr Lin teaches us English.
2. Rewrite each sentence with It is …that …to give more e mphasis to the underlined part. (Page29)。
