ANACORTES,Wash.—An explosion and fire at a Washington state oil refinery (炼油厂) shot flames into the night sky early Friday,killing three people and critically injuring four others.
The fire struck the Tesoro Corp refinery in Anacortes,about 70 miles north of Seattle,at about 12∶30 a.m.,the company said in a statement.The flames occurred at the naphtha (挥发油) unit while maintenance work was being performed and was put out in about 90 minutes,the company said.The naphtha unit is a step in refining crude oil into gasoline and other fuels.
Four employees are in hospital with major burns over the majority of the bodies.Susan Gregg-Hanson,a spokeswoman for Harborview Medical Center in Seattle,said they are two women,29 and 36,and two men 34 and 41.
Nearby residents,some 5 miles from the complex,called Washington TV stations after midnight with reports of an explosion,saying flames were being blown by high winds.“My house shook,big time,”Lisa Wooding told KOMO-TV.“There were flames.First high,then low to the ground and broad.”
Tesoro human resources manager John McDarment told The Associated Press he didn’t know exactly how the fire started.“This is a very sad time for our o rganiz ation.Everyone in the Tesoro family appreciates the impact that this will have on the families involved,and we are responding quickly to ensure the safety for ou r employees,and the neighboring community,”s aid Bruce Smith,Te soro’s chairman,president and CEO.
Activity around the complex has calmed down considerably as dawn approached.Guards were turning reporters away from the gate and there was no apparent sign of the fire th at had lit up the skies only hours earlier.
The Anacortes refinery,located about 70 miles north of Seattle on Puget Sound,can refine (精炼) about 120,000 barrels of oil daily into gasoline,jet fuel and diesel to markets in Washington and Oregon,according to the company.

Getting to the top is hard enough but staying there is an even greater challenge.And so it could be argued that the 10th World Championship 400m victory by Tonique Williams Darling is even more remarkable than wh en she struck Olympic gold in 2004.
Coming off the final turn the 27-year-olds from the Bahamas held off the attack of both Sanya Richards (USA)and the former World champion Ana Guevara of Mexico displaying a hunger that permanent champions must have.
“I would say that being able to pull off the Olympic title and then come back a year later and pull off the World Championship title has just been a roller coaster(过山车)experience for me,”she revealed.“It’s really a historical moment for me a nd for the Bahamas,just to be able to do something like this.And so I feel really humbled and grateful and just overjoyed right now.”
