卷及答案解析
第一部分阅读(共两节,满分40分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项
A
I started working with my hands at a young age. The youngest of five brothers, I took on the role as a “maintenance (维修) man” at an early age for our family’s small grocery store. Often my dad wouldn’t give me a clear idea of how something shouldbe done, so I just had to figure it out by researching or through trial and error.
Fast forward to 2016 and those problem-solving skills would become the focus of Tippecanoe High School’s Homebuilding class. I knew I wanted to teach the students skills that went beyond just being able to hammer nails or cut pieces of two-by-fours. The problem was that we didn’t have the resources at the time to do much else. The idea of attracting some type of funding seemed very important. Designing, building and selling a tiny house on wheels seemed like the perfect project to accomplishthe task. I reached out to a number of local businesses and most of them responded with the greatest support for what x k w we were doing.
This year we added a new element to the program. Through one of our partners, we were able to connect with the nonprofit Veteran’s Ananda Incorporated. Students in the Homebuilding class are leading the design and production of micro houses to be donated to this organization. The new partnership gives the students another focus to consider when designing and building the houses.
There has been no shortage of students since our first year. Three years ago we had 41 students, the next 191, and this year it was limited to just over 160 students so we could have a safe and manageable classroom environment. The number of girls taking the class has risen steadily over the last few years as well. This class offers something for everyone and the skills are universal.

As a 51-year-old first-aid responder since 1984, Jeffrey never knows what type of situation he might walk into, or who he'll meet along the way
Ten years into the job, Jeffrey received a call that reported that a man in his early 30s had fallen down in the Mall of America. When Jeffrey and his partner arrived at the scene, they found the young male face down on the ground. He had gone unconscious, making weak attempts to breathe. His wife stood beside him holding their small son in horror. They quickly rushed to calm the man to keep him under control and offer necessary first aid. After Jeffrey dropped the patient off at the neighboring hospital, he thought about the man and his family for a long time.
Jeffrey thought he had experienced everything under the sun until one random visit to Office Max three years ago, where he met a man repeatedly walking back and forth while staring at him. As it turned out, the man was the patient he had saved 20 years earlier.
"You gave me 20 years more than I ever thought I'd have," the man said. He thanked Jeffrey repeatedly and told him he had someone he wanted him to meet. He stepped around the corner and reappeared with a 20-something-year-old man. Jeffrey instantly knew that it was the son he had seen standing by his mother all those years ago
"That day changed my life," Jeffrey said. "Before that, everything was about work…When I talk to my beginner-training class, I tell them you never know the effect you can have on someone's life."
4. What did Jeffrey do with the young man?
A. He cured the man at the scene.
B. He took care of the man's wife and son.
C. He only sent the man to hospital.
D. He did what was needed
5. What did Jeffrey think of the encounter with the man at Office Max?
A. It was a common routine.
B. It was troublesome
C. It was unbelievable
D. It was a dangerous situation.
6. Why was the man thankful to Jeffrey?
A. Jeffrey helped bring up his little son
B. Jeffrey donated to support his family.
C. Jeffrey's help gave him the present happy life.
D. Jeffrey's kindness taught his son to be a new doctor.
7. How did the meeting change Jeffrey's life?
A. He was rewarded with much money
B. He changed his attitude to his job.
C. He got a promotion to be a team leader.
D. He took up teaching work to train newcomers.

The grocerystore might not be your favorite place to visit when you're at home, but is it ever fun when you're in another country? Honestly speaking, they're one of those strange little destinations that I like to sniff out everywhere I go, much as other travelers head toward clothing stores, libraries, coffee shops or galleries.
The greatest beauty of the grocery store –– whether it's a supermarket or a tiny shop –– is that it gives you a glimpse into what local people buy to cook their own meals. This offers clues into their lifestyles and preferences, and into the agricultural and cooking practices of the country. I stare at the strange fruits and vegetables, the seafood, the cheese, the spices, the bread, and oh, the chocolate...always the chocolate!
Being the environmental nerd(呆子)I am, I like paying attention to packaging, which can reflect people's attitudes towards environmental protection. Italy, for example, has a habit of requiring customers to bag their fruits and vegetables in plastic for weighing, while Sri Lanka leaveseverything loose in bins. In Brazil, everything is prepackaged in a layer of plastic.
People in grocery stores tend to be friendlier. They smile, say hello, and sometimes ask questions, which can lead to great conversations. I had a further discussion with a teenaged cashier in Sri Lanka, over which bag of crunchy(松脆的)mix to buy. He insisted that the one labeled “spicy” would be too hot for me, but I told him I was willing to risk it. He laughed and we ended up talking about my favorite Sri Lankan foods for ten minutes.
It's interesting then to come home and look at one's own local grocery store through new eyes. What would a visitor think? What stands out, and what do the food displays say about us as a culture? You might be surprised by
what you realize.
8. According to the author, what is the key benefit of visiting foreign grocery stores?
A. Learning to cook foreign dishes.
B. Making friends with local people.
C. Buying cheaper food and souvenirs.
D. Knowing local people and the country.
9. What does the author show by mentioning some countries in paragraph 3?
A. People's special lifestyles.
B. People's shopping habits.
C. People's environmental awareness.
D. People's packaging methods.
10. What can we infer from paragraph 4?
A. Sri Lankans know a lot about food.
B. Grocery stores are good social places.
C. Grocery stores vary in different countries.
D. Sri Lankans like to give strangers suggestions.
11. Which of the following shows the structure of text? (P: paragraph)
A. B.
C. D.
D
The beach may seem like an inviting place to run on a cool summer morning, but is running on the sand good for your body? It can be, but it’s important to be aware of the challenges that some beach runners experience before you get ready.
Running on the beach can be a good thing. It’s certainly different from running on a track or a pavement. For starters, sand can be a challenge because it has an uneven (不平坦的) surface. As you push off, you’re going to lose some of your push as the sand moves. So, you’re not going to be able to push yourself forward as you would on a track or a pavement. But this unevenness has anupside: It gives your body an extra workout, forcing you to exercise muscles that don’t get as much use during runs on firm surfaces. For example, your feet, ankles and lower back might feel sorer and more tired than usual after a beach run just because the surface is constantly moving and changing step to step.
You also might feel sore afterward because beaches tend to slope (倾斜) down to the water. If you’re going for a long run on the beach, you might notice that one side of your body might feel sorer because you’re putting more pressure on it due to the slope.
Some beach runners prefer to run barefoot — not wearing anything on feet. However, if you’re not used to barefoot running, start slowly and don’t run long distances at first. That’s because running barefoot uses more different muscles than running with shoes does, and it’s important to strengthen these muscles and adapt your feet. If you want to run barefoot and as long as you run carefully enough into it, go for it!
Running on the sand can be a smart choice for you, because running on softer ground surfaces can reduce muscle damage.
12. Why is it difficult to run on the beach for starters?
A. The soft surface makes people fall over easily.
B. People need to run carefully on its smooth surface.
C. Running on its uneven surface takes much effort.
D. It’s hard to keep one’s balance on its hard surface.
13. Which of the following best explains “upside” underlined in Paragraph 2?
A. Advantage.
B. Reason.
C. Character.
D. Challenge.
14. What’s the author’s attitude to barefoot running?
A. Critical.
B. Supportive.
C. Doubtful.
D. Uncaring.
15. The passage can probably be found in ______.
A. A primary school textbook
B. A tourist guide
C. A sports magazine
D. A scientific report

Dear Jack,
How is everything going? I am very glad to learn that you are coming to China this summer. It's not necessary to worry your Chinese. I'd like to share my ideas, it might help.
First, be brave enough to speak Chinese when you communicate with others. It's of great important to be
confident of you. We Chinese are very friendly so you needn't be afraid of making any mistakes. Second, it's better to speak slowly and clearly. Only by this way can you make yourself understand more easily. What's more, sometimes I can use drawings or pictures. Like you know, body language was also widely used across cultures and very often it really works.
May you will have a good time in China.
Best wishes!
