可连接主语，连接并列主语时，谓语动词采取就近原则，即由but also后的主语来决定谓语动词的形式。

可连接谓语动词，如：The Americans and the British not only speak the same language but also share a large number of social customs.英国人和美国人不但语言相同，而且有很多相同的风俗习惯。

可连接宾语、宾语补足语、表语、状语，如：Light and bright colors make people not only happier but also more active.浅色和鲜艳的颜色不但使人看了更加高兴，也会使人更加活泼。

not only…but also…前后连接两个句子时，not only后的句子要用部分倒装，但but also后的分句不用倒装。

如：Not only did he come，but also he saw her.他不仅来了，而且还见到了她。
