1.阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
The Vine That Ate the South
Kudzu is a fast-growing vine (蔓生植物)that covers a large area in the southern United States. It is so common that one might think it is a native plant, but it is not. Kudzu was brought to the United States from Japan in 1876. Many Americans thought it was beautiful, and they began to plant it. They didn't know it could grow up to a foot a day during the summer months. Nor did they know it would grow up and over anything in its path (路径).
In Japan, kudzu experienced cold winters and a short growing season. But in the United States, it has a very long growing season with warm and wet southern weather. It is fine weather for the vine to grow fast.
In the 1920s, people used the vine to feed farm animals. Ten years later, the government supported to plant kudzu because it kept soil (土壤)from washing away. However, by the 1950s, the government no longer wanted people to plant the vine. Twenty years after that, the government said it was a harmful plant.
The vine grows up trees and buildings, making some beautiful shapes. However, trees die after kudzu covers them because they cannot get enough light. Scientists are looking for ways to kill the vine. They used poisons (毒药)to kill the vine. However, some of the poisons made it grow even better. Scientists also find it difficult to dig up Kudzu. The plant is really tough.
Because kudzu is so hard to kill, some people are making the best of it. So they try to find different uses for the vine. They find the vine can be used to make paper and baskets, it can be used to feed the goats, and it can even be eaten by people. Scientists are studying it in the hope that the vine can be used as a medicine. At the very least, kudzu serves as an example of the unexpected results that can come from non-native plants.

Is there intelligent(有智力的)life on other planets? For years, scientists said "no." or "we don't know." But today this is changing. Seth Shostak and Alexandra Barnett are astronomers (天文学家). They believe intelligent life exists(存在)somewhere in the universe. They also think we will soon contact them.
Why do Shostak and Barnett think intelligent life exists on other planets? The first reason is time. Scientists believe the universe is about 12 billion years old. "This is long enough for other planets to have intelligent life, "say Shostak and Barnett. The second reason is size the universe is huge. "Tools like the Hubble Telescope(哈勃望远镜)have shown that there are at least 100 billion galaxies, "says Shostak. "And our galaxy, the Milky Way, has at least 100 billion stars. Some planets going around these stars might be similar to the earth. "
In the past, it was hard to look for signs of intelligent life in the universe. But now, powerful telescopes(高倍望远镜)allow scientists to discover smaller planets-the size of Mars or the earth-in other solar systems, these planets might have intelligent life.
Have beings from space already visited the earth? "Probably not, "says Shostak. "It's a long way away. However, intelligent beings may contact us in other way, such as radio signals(信号). In fact, they may be trying to communicate with us now, but we don't have the right tools to receive their messages. However, this is changing. By 2025, we could make contact with other life forms in our universe and we might help each other. "

(3)Why haven't beings from space visited us yet according to Shostak?

D. Because they don't know how to use radio signals.
(4)What does the underlined phrase "life forms" in the last paragraph mean?

In modern society there is a lot of disagreement about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is good for social progress. Others say that competition is bad. It sets one person against another. And it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.
I have taught many children who believe that their self-worth depended on how well they did at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life-and death matters. In their single-minded dream of success, the development of many other human qualities (品质)is sadly forgotten.
However, while some seem to be lost in the desire (渴望)to succeed, others take a different attitude. In a culture which values only the winners, they are strongly against competition. Among the most vocal are youngsters who are under competitive pressures(压力)from their parents or society. They are always told to be the top ones, but they think it's really hard. When I teach these young people, I often find them in a desire to fail. They seem to search for failure (失败)by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse:" I may have lost, but it doesn't matter because I really didn't try. If I had tried and lost, that would mean a lot."
Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief. They think one's self-respect depends on how well one does compared with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. Only as this fear begins to dissolve(消除)can we discover a new meaning in competition,

One morning, I was driving my father-in-law to the airport when a plane flew silently over the road like a big bird, about to touch down at the airport.
"It's magic," my father-in-law said. I looked at him, without knowing what was happening.
He was a doctor who gave speeches at colleges and had visited more than 100 countries. He understood better than I why a plane can fly in the sky. It, really, wasn't magic. But now, I realize he was at least right in some way.
Though flying might not be magic, it's certainly magical. What it brings to our real lives is something found in our dreams.
But too often, we, especially I forget. I read a sentence a few months ago. It said, "You know you're growing-up when you no longer want a window seat."
Too often in recent years, I've asked for a seat near the exit row, forgetting the wonders of traveling fast. But sometimes, when the Wi-Fi's not working or my computer has no power, I remember to look.
I think of one time when I was leaving on a family vacation. Moments after take-off, I started working. But a passenger behind me wouldn't stop talking. "The clouds!" he kept saying, "Look at the clouds!"
I turned around, and saw two men, one who appeared to be in his seventies and the other much younger. The chat continued for 20 minutes until, not patiently, I raised my eyes from my computer screen and looked out of the window.
The clouds!
He was right. We were floating through big soft balls of cotton, each in different shapes. They seemed easy enough to touch. The afternoon sun provided all kinds of colors, all against a blue sky. I put away my computer and appreciated(欣赏)them for the rest of the flight.

10.阅读理解
Not every dog is right for children and not every child is right for a dog. Most dog or child problems I meet involve children under six years old. If your children are under six, you should
invest a great deal of time and thoughts before choosing a new dog. Large guard dogs or dogs which have a history of being aggressive(好斗的) or biting should be avoided. Large and high-energy dogs that can knock children over would not be good choices either. Instead, parents should consider the little gentle dogs.
Parents with little children are usually very busy. They often do not have free time or desire to spend hours cleaning or walking a dog. In fact, a dog requires almost as much time as a child does. So ask yourself if you are ready to keep a dog when you are already very busy. As a veterinarian, many of the problems I meet are caused by the excuses like "the dog would be good for the kids" or "the children begged for one", but the parents do not really want a dog. If the parents cannot completely care for or train the dog, then I usually stop them from keeping a dog, otherwise it is not fair to the dog.
