Many people think a telephone is essential .But I think it is a pest and a time waster .Very often you find it impossible to escape from some i dle or curious chatter-box ,or from somebody who wants something for
nothing .If you have a telephone in your own house ,you will admit that it tends to ring when you are asleep ,or in the middle of a meal or a conversation, or when you are just going out ,or when you are taking your bath. Are you strong -minded enough to ignore it , to say to yourself, “Ah ,well ,it will all be the same in a hundred years’ time” You are not .You think there may be some important news or messages for you .I can assure you that if a message is really important it will reach you sooner or later .Have you never rushed dripping from the bath ,or chewing from the table, or dazed from the bed ,only to be told that you are a wrong number?
But you will say ,you need not have your name printed in the telephone directory ,and you can have a telephone which is only usable for outgoing calls .Besides ,you will say, isn’t it important to have a telephone in case of emergency-illness ,an accident ,or fire? Of course ,you are right ,but here in a thickly populated country like England one is seldom far from a telephone in case of dreadful necessity.
I think perhaps I had better try to justify myself by trying to prove that what I like is good .I admit that in different circumstances-if I were a toon (business VIP) ,for instance ,or bed -ridden I might find a telephone essential . But then if I were a taxi-driver I should find a car essential.
Let me put it another way: there are two things for which the English seem to show particular talent; one is mechanical invention, the other is literature .My own business happens to be with the use of words but I see I must now stop using them .For I have just been handed a slip of paper to say that somebody is waiting to speak to me on the telephone .I think I had better answer it .After all ,one never knows , it may be something important. 60.The passage is mainly discussing .
A.that we should be strong enough to ignore a phone call
B.that important message will reach you sooner or later
C.whether it’s necessary to answer all phone calls
D.whether it is necessary to have a telephone
61.Judging from the passage ,who is strong -minded enough to ignore a phone call?
A.The author. B.A toon. C.A taxi-driver. D.Hardly anyone.
62.According to the passage ,the author .
A.thinks the telephone should go out of our life
B.likes to be different from other people
C.thinks the telephone is annoying
D.speaks favourably of a telephone
63.In the author’s opinion ,which of the following is NOT true ?
A.Nearly everyone has been told a wrong number.
B.It’s necessary for everyone to have a telephone.
C.He himself can not decide whether to answer a call.

People i n the United States honor their parents with two special days: Mother’s Day, on the second Sunday in May, and Father’s Day, on th e third Sunday in June. These days are set aside to show love and respect for parents. They raise their children and educate them to be responsible citizens. They give love and care. These two days offer a chance to think about the changing roles of mothers and fathers. More mothers now work outside the home. More fathers must help with child-care.
These two special days are celebrated in many different ways. On Mother’s Day people wear carnations. A red one stands for a living mother. A white one shows that the mother is dead. Many people attend religious services(宗教仪式) to honor parents. It is also a day when people whose parents are dead visit their graves. On these days, families get together at home and in restaurants. They often have outdoor BBQs for Father’s Day. These are days of fun and good feelings and memories.
Another tradition is to give ca rds and gifts. Children make them in school. Many people make their own presents. These are valued more than the ones bought in stores. It is not the value of the gift that is important, but it is “the thought that counts”. Greeting card stores, florists, candy makers, bakeri es, telephones companies and other stores do a lot of business during these holidays.

包头一中2010—2011学年度第一学期期中考试试题
高一年级英语试题答案
1.听力(学英语第17期)
Recently we held a class meeting to discuss the problem of passers-by crossing the street while the traffic light is red. As we can see, some passers-by don’t obey traffic rules and jaywalk frequently. This blocks traffic, seriously affects drivers and causes accidents to happen, en dangering the safety of passers-by and drivers. In a word, jaywalking produces negative effects and does not help develop good social behavior.
It is really a pity to see all this in our society. To deal with the situation, the government has taken some measures. When caught jaywalking, the passers-by are criticized so that they will become aware of the dangers of doing so, or they are fined on the spot. Sometimes the traffic police will report jaywalkers at their workplace and expose them to the public. However, it will still take a long time to stop passers-by from jaywalking. We should start from ourselves right now.。
