Leeny stood in the chicken coop〔笼子〕, shovel in hand, smiling widely. She was not faking it: My 7-year-old daughter was having fun cleaning out the chicken coop. I was happy she was enjoying herself, but I’d meant the househol d work to be punishment for losing a library book. So, was I winning or losing at parenting?
Leeny always has her nose in a book. She even took to reading in the car on the long drive to summer camp, which was where she lost the book. This is the first lost library book in my life. My family has always been overeducated, but we were poor.
I didn’t own books. I borrowed books. However, my daughters have more books now than I owned my whole childhood and I knowingly contribute to it by adding to the stacks〔堆〕. So it’s probably my fault that when Leeny realized she had lost the book, she shrugged〔耸肩〕. “Sorry. I can't find it.〞My daughter said. “It’s only $20, right? What's the big deal?〞
I felt the need to make her feel responsible for the book. She agreed to clean
the chicken coop in trade for my paying the library fine. I thought this idea was very clever because cleaning the coop is some work I had been avoiding for months. It was summertime, and dust floated in the dry air.
But my girl, my animal-loving, mini-me, thought shoveling chicken poop〔铲鸡粪〕was the most fun she’d had on a Saturday morning in a long time. She did not feel any of the emotions that punishment is supposed to introduce. In fact, she looked as if she might lose another book on purpose in order to clean the coop again. I stood, somewhat dumbfounded〔发呆的〕, watching her.
It took me a while to realize what had happened, why my punishment had failed completely and why I didn’t care. The fact is that I had Leeny help me clean the chicken coop. I was there, too, shoveling chicken poop, fetching the clean straw and feed. Leeny’s little sister, Vicki, was inside watching a cartoon while my husband paid bills. Only Leeny and I were outside. She had me all to herself for the first time since Vicki was born, and she was enjoying all the attention for once.
I don’t know what she learned about responsibility, but I found that I didn’t care about the book anymore. We bonded over that unpleasant job and spent quality time together: mother, daughter, and chicken poop.
4. How does Leeny find reading?
A. It is very enjoyable.
B. It is full of challenges.
C. It inspires her to be a camper.
D. It teaches her to lover her family.
5. The underlined word “it〞 in Paragraph 2 refers to the fact that _______.
A. the autho r didn’t own any books
B. the author’s daughters own too many books
C. the author’s daughters often lost library books
D. the author could never have enough books to read
6. How did the author feel after she saw Leeny’s cleaning work?
A. Worried.
B. Ashamed.
C. Astonished.
D. Embarrassed.
7. What’s the best title for the text?
A. My punishment failed, but I didn’t care
B. What I owe to Leeny: much more attention
C. My daughter drove me crazy, but I felt grateful
D. Surprise: my daughter loves cleaning chicken coops
【答案】4. A 5. B 6. C 7. A

应选A。

【5题详解】
词句猜想题。

根据划线句上文However, my daughters have more books now than I owned my whole childhood可知,我女儿有比我整个童年有的书更多的书,因此推断划线局部说的是:我有意通过增添书架助长了它,因此推断it指代上文提的“女儿有太多的书〞,应选B。

【6题详解】
细节理解题。

通读全文,特别是最后一段的It took me a while to realize what had happened, why my punishment had failed completely and why I didn’t care.( 我花了一段时间是才意识到发生了什么,为什么我的惩罚完全失败了,为什么我不在乎。

C
Many curi ous children have lately asked “How do glasses help you see?〞Actually, they asked this at a very good time because more and more people are needing to wear glasses and we don’t really know why.
Our eyes let us see because light enters each eye, and the eye then creates a message that goes to the brain. The eyeball itself doesn’t actually “see〞—the brain sees. The eyeballs just take pictures, like two little cameras. To see properly, each eyeball needs to send the light that enters it into a very exact spot inside the eyeball, called the retina(视网膜). If the light falls onto the incorrect place, everything goes wrong.
Many people won’t need glasses and can see just fine. This is because their eyeballs are focusing light properly onto the retina. However, some people have eyeballs that are too long. They are called “shortsighted〞. For these people, things far away can look blurry(模糊的). Other people have eyeballs that are too short. They are called “farsighted〞 and things close to them can look blurry. Both shortsighted and farsighted people need glasses to help them see clearly. They work by helping the eyeball to focus light onto the correct place, the retina. Only then can we see clearly.
Maybe you have a grandma or grandpa who wears whenever they are reading books or using their mobile phone. When people get older, they usually become a little bit farsighted because a part of their eye called the lens becomes stiff and doesn’t work properly.
More and more young people in the world are needing to wear glasses. we’re not
sure why, but some scientists think that children who spend too much time inside are more likely to need glasses. Children who need glasses but don’t wear them don’t do as well as in school. Once you need glasses, you usually need them forever—your eyes won’t go back to normal on their own.
I hope that one day we can find out why people’s eyeballs become too long or too short and then we can stop people needing to wear glasses in the first place. Then people will never lose or forget their glasses ever again!
8. What is the author’s purpose for writing this article?
A. To give expert advice.
B. To tell an interesting story.
C. To present a research finding.
D. To answer children’s question.
9. What does the underlined sentence “everything goes wron g〞 in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Our brain is confused.
B. Our retina stops work.
C. We may lose our eyesight.
D. We are unable to see things clearly.
10. What can we learn about shortsighted people?
A. Their eyeballs are too long.
B. Their eyeballs are too short.
C. The lens of their eye works lazily.
D. The light falls exactly onto their retina.
11. Which of the following does the author know for certain?
A. What causes changes to people’s eyeballs.
B. What makes us lose our glasses quite often.
C. Why more and more young people have bad eyesight.
D. Why people with poor eyesight usually need glasses forever.
【答案】8. D 9. D 10. A 11. D

Over the last few years, cartoon pictograms have become an important part of how many people communicate. In recent years, there has been a push to include more diversity in emoticons, like adding new options for a variety of skin tones in smiley faces.
But when people from the Te Puia Maori cultural center in Rotorua, New Zealand,
looked at existing emojis, they realized there was an opportunity to create some that reflected their country’s native cultures. They designed more than 150 emoticons that have named “Emotikis.〞 The pictograms include traditional objects from Maori culture. The set even includes a number of animated emoji gifs.
But while the Maori emojis may be designed with fun in mind, Kiri Atkinson-Crean, Te Puia spokesperson, says they give Maori youth a way to communicate with each other online using signifiers from their own culture.
“All they could use were expressions and symbols from other countries—we wanted to give them an opportunity to express themselves through another form of this language with Maori culture Emotikis,〞 said Atkinson-Crean.
Even so, there is more to texting than emoticons. Many languages are inexpressible with the limited symbols available for most smartphone keyboards, and many of those languages are at risk of disappearing.
In Canada, there are more than 60 different native languages spoken by First Nations people, but many of these languages are at risk of disappearing. During the late 19th century, government policies tore First Nations children from their parents in order to forcibly absorb them into Euro-Canadian and Christian culture. Raised in state-run schools, they were forbidden to speak their native languages.
Native groups have advocated for years to have their languages officially recognized by Canada. To protect their language s, they’re also turning to technology for solutions. For example, the FirstVoices Keyboard is a free app for iPhone and Android smartphones that allows anyone to write in more than 100 native
languages from around the world.
Many native languages require c haracters that weren’t available on smartphone, tablets and the like. So Alex Wadsworth, who developed the FirstVoice Keyboard, programmed in these characters and then applied his keyboards to use for text messaging and writing emails. “You can text an eld er now,〞 says Wadsworth.
12. Why did the Te Puia Maori cultural center designed Emotikis?
A. To preserve their culture.
B. To keep up with the world.
C. To enrich the life of Maori youth.
D. To help Maori youth communicate easily.
13. What can be learned about Emotikis?
A. They are popular in Canada.
B. They will endanger native language.
C. They are too limited to express fully.
D. They include many symbols from different countries.
14. What happened to native languages in Canada?
A. They were once forbidden in many schools.
B. Many of them disappeared from literary usage.
C. They were once officially recognized by Canada.
D. Many of them served as a bridge to learn English.
15. Which of the following is TRUE of the FirstVoices Keyboard?
A. It is designed for elders.
B. It offers many languages.
C. It has been advocated officially.
D. It can be bought on smartphone.
【答案】12. A 13. C 14. A 15. B

Things You Should Know About COVID-19
COVID-19, a cousin of the SARS virus, has infected more than ten million people
since the outbreak began in Wuhan, China in December, 2021. Scientists think it likely started in an animal and spread to humans. The World Health Organization offered guidance to countries on how they can prepare for it. Here are four things you should know about it.
What are the symptoms?
It’s from a family called the corona viruses. The symptoms of this illness are pretty ordinary on the face of it: it’s a dry cough fever and then breathing problems. ___16___ But we also know about the more severe cases, which is where people have gone on to develop viral pneumonia〔病毒性肺炎〕, and those people obviously end up in hospital, and all the deaths have been among those people.
How is this virus transmitted?
___17___ It was hoped at first actually that it just came from animals as all corona viruses do. But now it looks as though it is actually passed from one human being to another. We’ve got people to people transmission, because the market has been closed for sometime, and there are cases in people who’ve never been near it.
___18___
So there actually isn’t any treatment at the moment at all, because this i s a virus. Antibiotics〔抗生素〕won’t work. ___19___ So really you want to know antiviral treatment, but none of the flu drugs that we’ve got works effectively on this now. A corona virus is different from a flu virus, so there actually isn’t any treatment at the moment at all.
Should we be panic about this outbreak?
Though there have been so many cases so far, it is possible for us to largely reduce the risk of infection if we can take preventive measures, including regularly washing our hands, covering our sneezes, and wiping down surfaces. Good news is that in the months since, we’ve seen the social distancing measures taking effect, too. ___20___
A. What treatment is available?
B. What should we do if we are affected?
C. They only work against bacteria not viruses.
D. Actually there is no need for us to be too anxious about it.
E. It seems quite mild in lots of people, and probably those people don’t end up in hospital at all.
F. Although your body is very strong and healthy, you’re going to find it very hard to fight off a virus.
G. We’ve only just discovered that the new corona virus is actually transmitted from one person to another.
