第三部分:阅读理解(共两节,每小题2分,满分40分)
A
Time spent in a bookshop can be most enjoyable, whether you are a booklover or merely go there to buy a book as a present. You may even have entered the shop just to find shelter from a sudden shower.
Whatever the reason, you can soon become totally unaware of your surroundings. The desire to pick up a book with an attractive dust-jacket is irresistible, although this method of selection ought not to be followed, as you might end up with a rather dull book. You soon become absorbed in some book or other, and usually it is only much later that you realize you have spent far too much time there and must dash off to keep some forgotten appointment—without buying a book, of course.
This opportunity to escape the realities of everyday life is, I think, the main attraction of a bookshop. There are not many places where it is possible to do this. A music shop is very much like a bookshop. You can wander round such places to your heart's content. If it is a good shop, no assistant will approach you with the unavoidable greeting: "Can I help you, sir?" You needn't buy anything you don't want. In a bookshop an assistant should remain in the background until you have finis hed browsing. Then, and only then, are his services necessary. Of course, you may want to find out where a particular sec tion is, but when he has led you there, the assistant should retire considerately and look as if he is not interested in se lling a single book.
You have to be careful not to be attracted by the variety of books in a bookshop. It is very easy to enter the shop looking for a book on, say ancient coins and to come out carrying a copy of the latest bestselling novel and perhaps a book about brass-rubbing--something which had only slightly interested you up till then. This volume on the subject, however, happened to be so well illustrated and the part of the text you read proved so interesting that you just had to buy it. This sort of thing can be very dangerous. Apart from running up a huge account, you can waste a great deal of time wandering from section to section.

Teachers and parents usually call attention to the pictures when they read storybooks to preschool child. But a new study suggests that calling attention to the words and letters on the page may lead to better readers.
The two-year study compared children who were read in this way in class with children who were not. Those whose teachers most often discussed the print showed clearly higher skills in reading, spelling and understanding. These results were found one year and even two years later.
Shayne Piasta, an assistant professor of teaching and learning at Ohio State University, was a n author of the study. She says most preschool teachers would find this method manageable and would need only a small change in the way they teach. They already read story-books in class. The only diff erence would be increased attention to the printed text. “If you get children to pay attention to letters and words, it makes sense that they will do better at word recognition and spelling.” But she says research suggests that very few parents and teachers do this in a systematic way.
More than 300 children aged four and five were observed in classrooms. They came from poor families and were below average in their language skills. For thirty weeks, the children took part in a program called Project STAR— Sit Together and Read. The project is based in Ohio State. It tests the short-term and long-term results of reading regularly to preschool children in their classrooms.
There are different ways that adults can talk to children about print. They can point to a letter and discuss it, and even trace the shape with a finger. They can point out a word and discuss the meaning of the print or how the words tell the story. And they can talk about the organization of the print-- for instance, showing how words are written left to right in English.

As for students, opinions are divided. Some students think that it will be of great benefit for their health, enabling them to be well developed. On the other hand, some students hold the view that this kind of education will take up their time, which will be spent studying otherwise. And it will have a negative effect on their grades.
It’s true that students are given little chance of laboring nowadays, thus lacking the sense of labor. So as far as I’m concerned, students definitely value more what labor brings about.。
