Reading poems is not exactly an everyday activity for most pe ople. In fact, many people never read a poem once they get o ut of high school. It is worth reminding ourselves that this has not always been t he case in America. In the nineteenth century, a usual Americ an activity was to sit around the fireside in the evening and re ad poems aloud. It is true that there was no television at the ti me, nor movie theaters, nor World Wide Web, to provide diver sion. However, poems were a source of pleasure, of self-education, of connection to other people or to the world beyon d one’s own community. Reading them was a social act as we ll as an individual one, and perhaps even more social than ind ividual. Writing poems to share with friends and relations was, like reading poems by the fireside, another way in which poet ry has a place in everyday life. How did things change? Why are most Americans no longer c omfortable with poetry, and why do most people today think th at a poem has nothing to tell them and that they can do well without poems? There are, I believe, three culprits(肇事者):poets, teachers, and we ourselves. Of these, the least importa nt is the third: the world surrounding the poem has betrayed u s more than we have betrayed the poem. Early in the twentiet h century, poetry in English headed into directions unfavorabl e to the reading of poetry. Readers decided that poems were not for the fireside or the easy chair at night, that they belonge d where other difficult-to-read things belonged.Poets failed the reader, so did teachers. They want their stud ents to know something about the skills of a poem, they want their students to see that poems mean something. Yet what u sually occurs when teachers push these concerns on their hig h school students is that young people decide poems are unpl easant crossword puzzles.1. Reading poems is thought to be a social act in the nineteen th century because .A. it built a link among peopleB. it helped unite a communityC. it was a source of self-educationD. it was a source of pleasure2. The underlined word “diversion”(in Paragraph 2) most prob ably means “”.A. concentrationB. changeC. amusementsD. stories3. According to the passage, what is the main cause of the gr eat gap between readers and poetry?A. Students are becoming less interested in poetry.B. Students are poorly educated in high school.C. TV and the Internet are more attractive than poetry.D. Poems have become difficult to understand.4. In the last paragraph, the writer questions .A. the difficulty in studying poemsB. the way poems are t aught in schoolC. students’ wrong ideas about poetryD. the techniques used in writing poems1、答案解析:答案为A。

专题一阅读理解阅读理解怎么考?Ⅰ.正确选项的命题方式和特征描述(2016·全国甲卷·B)Five years ago, when I taught art at a school in Seattle,I used Tinkertoys as a test at the beginning of a term to find out something about my students.I put a small set of Tinkertoys in front of each student, and said:“Make something out of the Tinkertoys. You have 45 minutes today—and 45 minutes each day for the rest of the week.”A few students hesitated to start. They waited to see what the rest of the class would do.Several others checked the instructions and made something according to one of the model plans provided.Another group built something out of their own imaginations.Once I had a boy who worked experimentally with Tinkertoys in his free time. His constructions filled a shelf in the art classroom and a good part of his bedroom at home.I was delighted at the presence of such a student. Here was an exceptionally creative mind at work. His presence meant that I had an unexpected teaching assistant in class whose creativity would infect(感染) other students.Encouraging this kind of thinking has a downside.I ran the risk of losing those students who had a different style of thinking.Without fail one would declare,“But I'm just not creative.”“Do you dream at night when you're asleep?”“Oh,sure.”“So tell me one of your most interesting dreams.” The student would tell something wildly imaginative.Flying in the sky or in a time machine or growing three heads.“That's pretty creative.Who does that for you?”“Nobody.I do it.”“Really—at night, when you're asleep?”“Sure.”“Try doing it in the daytime,in class,okay?”25.The teacher used Tinkertoys in class in order to .A.know more about the studentsB.make the lessons more excitingC.raise the students' interest in artD.teach the students about toy design26.What do we know about the boy mentioned in Paragraph 3?A.He liked to help his teacher.B.He preferred to study alone.C.He was active in class.D.He was imaginative.27.What does the underlined word “downside” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?A.Mistake. 专题强化练(五)——阅读理解之主旨大意题(限时25分钟)对应学生用书(单独成册)第113页A(2020·郑州第二次质检)Something strange has been happening to me lately: Women in the street have been telling me I'm brave. My act of courage isn't much—I just stopped coloring my hair.I had brown hair that started going gray when I was 30.So,like a lot of women,I started dyeing(染)it.It was expensive and timeconsuming. And my hair grows fast,so I needed to go back to the hair salon(美发厅)every 5 weeks. Many people seem to enjoy holding onto their youth for as long as possible, giving others the impression that they don't have much wisdom or many accomplishments. But our hair starts to turn gray and suddenly we start spending $500 or more a year to cover something our male colleagues don't need to cover.Of course, people should do what they want to do with their own body—my mother is 91 and still has“blonde” hair, and why not?I just wish more of us would feel that it is OK to be ourselves, because going gray has done more for me than saving me time and money.I like my natural hair, just as it is.I like how it has got curly again. It is recovering after years of being damaged by chemicals.I also like that it has given me some needed attitude in a society that makes youth seem so important, while being against maturity. It reminds me that I'm not a kid anymore and this isn't a bad thing. Not being a kid anymore means I read the books I want, and not the books I feel I should read.It means not wasting my time at events I don't need to attend when I'd rather be with my family and friends. When I see my hair in the mirror,it's a reminder that my time is limited, and I should spend it doing what matters. There's nothing shameful about growing older. And pretending it's not happening is a way of giving up our power.I see my gray hair as a little act of rebellion(反叛)against the idea that people lose value as they age, instead of gaining it.I see gray hair as my “flag” and I'm letting it fly proudly.[语篇解读] 在文章开头,作者叙述了自己虽然头发变白但不再染发,从而受到别人的好评的经历,接着表达了自己对变老的看法。

The experiment of estimation he conducted showed that in some cases, the average of a large number of independent estimates could be quite accurate. This effect capitalizes on the fact that when people make errors, those errors aren’t always the same. Some people will tend to overestimate, and some to underestimate. When enough of these errors are averaged together, they cancel each other out, resulting in a more accurate estimate. If people are similar and tend to make the same errors, then theirerrors won’t cancel each other out. In more technical terms, the wisdom of crowds requires that people’s estimates be independent. If for whatever reasons, people’s errors become correlated or dependent, the accuracy of the estimate will go down. But a new study led by Joaquin Navajas offered an interesting twist (转折) on this classic phenomenon. The key finding of the study was that when crowds were further divided into smaller groups that were allowed to have a discussion, the averages from these groups were more accurate than those from an equal number of independent individuals. For instance, the average obtained from the estimates of four discussion groups of five was significantly more accurate than the average obtained from 20 independent individuals. In a follow-up study with 100 university students, the researchers tried to get a better sense of what the group members actually did in their discussion. Did they tend to go with those most confident about their estimates? Did they follow those least willing to change their minds? This happened some of the time, but it wasn’t the dominant response. Most frequently, the groups reported that they “shared arguments and reasoned together.” Somehow, these arguments and reasoning resulted in a global reduction in error. Although the studies led by Navajas have limitations many questions remain the potential implications for group discussion and decision-making are enormous.32. What is paragraph 2 of the text mainly about?A. The methods of estimation.B. The underlying logic of the effect.C. The causes of people’s errors.D. The design of Galton’s experiment.33. Navajas’ study found that the average accuracy could increase even if ________.A. the crowds were relatively smallB. there were occasional underestimatesC. individuals did not communicateD. estimates were not fully independent34. What did the follow-up study focus on?A. The size of the groups.B. The dominant members.C. The discussion process.D. The individual estimates.35. What is the author’s attitude toward Navajas’ studies?A. Unclear.B. Dismissive.C. Doubtful.D. Approving.【答案】32. B 33. D 34. C 35.

Plants can’t communicate by moving or making sounds, as m ost animals do. Instead, plants produce volatile compounds, c hemicals that easily change from a liquid to a gas. A flower’s sweet smell, for example, comes from volatile compounds tha t the plant produces to attract insects such as bugs and bees. Plants can also detect volatile compounds produced by other plants. A tree under attack by hungry insects, for instance, ma y give off volatile compounds that let other trees know about t he attack. In response, the other trees may send off chemical s to keep the bugs away—or even chemicals that attract the bugs’ natural enemies. Now scientists have created a quick way to understand what plants are saying: a chemical sensor(传感器) called an electronic nose. The“e-nose” can tell compounds that crop plants make when they’re attacked. Scientists say the e-nose could help quickly detect whether plants are being eaten by insects. But today the only way to detect such insects is tovisually inspect individual plants. This is a challenging task fo r managers of greenhouses, enclosed gardens that can hous e thousands of plants. The research team worked with an e-nose that recognizes volatile compounds. Inside the device, 1 3 sensors chemically react with volatile compounds. Based on these interactions, the e-nose gives off electronic signals that the scientists analyze usi ng computer software. To test the nose, the team presented it with healthy leaves fro m cucumber, pepper and tomato plants, all common greenho use crops. Then the scientists collected samples of air around damaged leaves from each type of crop. These plants had be en damaged by insects, or by scientists who made holes in th e leaves with a hole punch(打孔器).The e-nose, it turns out, could identify healthy cucumber, peper and tomato plants based on the volatile compounds they produce. It could also identify tomato leaves that had been damaged. But even more impressive, the device could tell which type of damage—by insects or with a hole punch—had been done to the tomato leaves. With some fine-tuning, a device like the e-nose could one day be used in greenhouses to quickly spot h armful bugs, the researchers say. A device like this could also be used to identify fruits that are perfectly ripe and ready to pi ck and eat, says Natalia Dudareva, a biochemist at Purdue U niversity in West Lafayette, Ind. who studies smells of flowers and plants. Hopefully, scientists believe, the device could bring large benefits to greenhouse managers in the near future.1. We learn from the text that plants communicate with each o ther by .A. making some soundsB. waving their leavesC. producing some chemicalsD. sending out electronic signals2. What did the scientists do to find out if the e-nose worked?A. They presented it with all common crops.B. They fixed 13 sensors inside the device.C. They collected different damaged leaves.D. They made tests on damaged and healthy leaves.3. According to the writer, the most amazing thing about the e -nose is that it can .A. pick out ripe fruitsB. spot the insects quicklyC. distinguish different damages to the leavesD. recognize unhealthy tomato leaves4. We can infer from the last paragraph that the e-nose .A. is unable to tell the smell of flowersB. is not yet used in greenhousesC. is designed by scientists at PurdueD. is helpful in killing har mful insects【参考答案】1—4、CDCB阅读理解。

强化训练05阅读理解(五)(45分钟,100分)ARecently, researchers have announced a breakthrough in the exploration of new energy-development of the first practical artificial leaf, an advanced solar cell that imitates the process, called photosynthesis(光合作用), that green plants use to make sunlight and water into energy.“A practical artificial leaf has been a dream of scientists for decades,” said Daniel Nocera, who led the research team. “We believe we have made it. The artificial leaf shows particular promise as an inexpensive source of electricity for homes of the poor in developing countries. One can imagine villages in India and Africa soon purchasing an affordable basic power system based on this technology. ”The leaf is like the shape of a poker card but thinner. Placed in water in a bright sunlight, it could produce enough electricity to supply a house in a developing country with electricity for a day by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen, which are stored in a fuel cell to produce electricity. The “artificial leaf” is not a new concept. The first artificial leaf was developed more than a decade ago by John Turner. However, it was impractical for wider use, as it was composed of rare, expensive metals and was highly unstable with a lifespan of barely one day.Nocera's new leaf overcomes these problems. It is made of inexpensive materials that are widely available, works under simple conditions and is highly stable. Laboratory studies showed that it could operate continuously for at least 45 hours without a drop in activity. The key to this breakthrough is Nocera's recent discovery of several new powerful, inexpensive catalysts, which are able to accelerate the chemical reaction under simple conditions. Right now, Nocera's leaf is about 10 times more efficient at carrying out photosynthesis than a natural leaf. Yet he is optimistic that he can boost the efficiency of the device much higher in the future.1. Daniel Nocera describes his artificial leaf as promising in __________.A. making an artificial plant that can feed itselfB. finding a new kind of catalyst to produce electricityC. providing electricity for the poor family at a low costD. changing the sunlight and water into electricity directly2. The underlined word “accelerate” in the last paragraph p robably means __________.A. reduce the loss of energyB. speed up the processC. work as a media to store collected energyD. control the operation of chemical reactions3. We can learn from the passage __________.A. There was nobody who had an idea of the artificial leaf before.B. Nocera's artificial leaf has advantages over Turner's in some ways.C. The first artificial leaf was once widely put into use in many countries.D. The new artificial leaf works well but can just keep operating only one day.4. The passage is most probably from __________.A. a science news reportB. a science fiction storyC. a fairy tale bookD. an advertisement for solar products【语篇解读】本文报道一则有关新型太阳能电池的新闻——“人造树叶”。

强化训练01阅读理解(一)(45分钟,100分)APeople aren't walking any more-if they can figure out a way to avoid it.I felt superior about this matter until the other day I took my car to mail a small parcel. The journey is a matter of 281 steps. But I used the car. And I wasn't in any hurry, either, I had merely become one more victim of a national sickness: motorosis. It is an illness to which I had thought myself immune(免疫的), for I was bred in the tradition of going to places on my own two legs. At that time, we regarded 25 miles as good day's walk and the ability to cover such a distance in ten hours as sign of strength and skill. It did not occur to us that walking was a hardship. And the effect was lasting. When I was 45 years old I raced-and beat-a teenage football player the 168 steps up the Stature of Liberty.Such enterprises today are regarded by many middle-aged persons as bad for the heart. But a well-known British physician, Sir Adolphe Abrahams, pointed out recently that hearts and bodies need proper exercise is more likely to have illnesses than one who exercises regularly. And walking is an ideal form of exercise-the most familiar and natural of all.It was Henry Thoreau who showed mankind the richness of going on foot. The man walking can learn the trees, flower, insects, birds and animals, the significance of seasons, the very feel of himself as a living creature in a living world, He cannot learn in a car.The car is a convenient means of transport, but we have made it our way of life. Many people don't dare to approach Nature any more; to them the world they were born to enjoy is all threat. To them security is a_steel_river thundering on a concrete road. And much of their thinking takes place while waiting for the traffic light to turn green.I say that the green of forests is the mind's best light. And none but the man on foot can evaluate what is basic and everlasting.1. What was life like when the author was young?A. People usually went around on foot.B. People often walked 25 miles a day.C. People used to climb the Statue of Liberty.D. People considered a ten-hour walk as a hardship.2. The author mentions Henry Thoreau to prove that __________.A. middle-aged people like getting back to natureB. walking in nature helps enrich one's mindC. people need regular exercise to keep fitD. going on foot prevents heart disease3. What is compared to “a steel river” in Paragraph 6?A. A queue of cars.B. A ray of traffic light.C. A flash of lightning.D. A stream of people.4. What is the author's intention of writing this passage?A. To tell people to reflect more on life.B. To recommend people to give up driving.C. To advise people to do outdoor activities.D. To encourage people to return to walking.【语篇解读】本文主要关于步行对于身体和心灵的益处。
2017高考英语阅读理解特训5及答案

2017高考英语阅读理解特训5及答案DWhen Doctor Gibbs wasn't saving lives, he was planting trees. He had some interesting theories about planting trees. He believed in the principle: "No pain, no gain". He hardly watered his new trees, an attitude which flew in the face of conventional wisdom.Once I asked why and he told me that watering plants spoiled them because it made them grow weaker. He said you had to make things tough for the trees so that only the strongest could survive. He talked about how watering trees made them develop shallow roots and how, if they were not watered, trees would grow deep roots in search of water. So, instead of watering his trees every morning, he'd beat them with a rolled-up newspaper. I asked him why he did that, and he said it was to get the tree's attention.Doctor Gibbs died a couple of years after I left home. Every now and then, I walked by his house and looked at the trees that I'd watched him plant some 25 years ago. They were tall and strong.I planted a couple of trees myself a few years ago. Two years of attending these trees meant they grew up weak. Whenever a cold wind blew, their branchestrembled. Adversity seemed to benefit Doctor Gibb's trees in ways comfort and ease never could.Every night before I go to bed, I check on my two sons. I often pray that their lives will be easy. But lately I've been thinking that it's time to change my prayer. I know my children are going to encounter hardship. There's always a cold wind blowing somewhere. What we need to do is to pray for deep roots, so when the rains fall and the winds blow, we won't be torn apart.31. With the trees planted, Doctor Gibbs often______.A. paid little attention to themB. talked to them to get their attentionC. kept watering them every morningD. beat them to make them grow deep roots【答案】A【解析】细节理解题。

强化训练05 阅读理解(五)(45分钟,100分)ARecently, researchers have announced a breakthrough in the exploration of new energy-development of the first practical artificial leaf, an advanced solar cell that imitates the process, called photosynthesis(光合作用), that green plants use to make sunlight and water into energy.“A practical artificial leaf has been a dream of scientists for decades,” said Daniel Nocera, who led the research team. 答案:ABThe Brown BearMy wife Laura and I were on the beach, with three of our children, taking pictures of shore birds near our home in Alaska when we spotted a bear. The bear was thin and small, moving aimlessly.Just a few minutes later, I heard my daughter shouting, “Dad! The bear is right behind us!” An aggressive bear will usually rush forward to frighten away its enemy but would suddenly stop at the last minute. This one was silent and its ears pinned back-the sign (迹象) of an animal that is going in for the kill. And it was a cold April day. The bear behaved abnormally, probably because of hunger.I held my camera tripod (三脚架) in both hands to form a barrier as the bear rushed into me. Its huge head was level with my chest and shoulders, and the tripod stuck across its mouth. It bit down and I found myself supporting its weight. I knew I would not be able to hold it for long.Even so, this was a fight I had to win: I was all that stood between the bear and my family, who would stand little chance of running faster than a brown bear. The bear hit at the camera, cutting it off the tripod. I raised my left arm to protect my face; the beast held tightly on the tripod and pressed it into my side. My arm could not move, and I sensed that my bones were going to break.Drawing back my free hand, I struck the bear as hard as I could for five to six times. The bear opened its mouth and I grasped its fur, trying to push it away. I was actually wrestling (扭打) with the bear at this point. Then, as suddenly as it had begun, the fight ended. The bear moved back toward the forest, before returning for another attack-the first time I felt panic. Apparently satisfied that we caused no further threat, the bear moved off, destroying a fence as it went. My arm was injured, but the outcome for us could hardly have been better. I'm proud that my family remained clearheaded when panic could have led to a very different outcome.1. The bear finally went away after it __________.A. felt safeB. got injuredC. found some foodD. took away the camera2. The writer and his family survived mainly due to their __________.A. prideB. patienceC. calmnessD. cautiousness3. When the bear moved back towards the forest, the family felt __________.A. relievedB. threatenedC. excitedD. puzzled4.
