The “Give It Up for Earth Day” encourages people to commit to giving up actions that
are harmful to the environment, such as using poisonous cleaners.
Throughout the month of April, Canadians are being asked to “Give It Up for Earth
Day!” Earth Day has been celebrated every year on April 22 since 1970. Earth Day Canada
president Jed Goldberg says that as people become more environmentally aware, they
want to find ways to reduce their environmental influence, not just celebrate one
special event.
“Earth Day is a great launching_pad for thinking about environmental action every day,”said Goldberg. “Choosing healthier options, even for the short term, can lead to thinking about the influence of our decisions for a lifetime.”
That's the reason behind the “Give It Up for Earth Day” campaign. It's designed
to encourage healthy habits that benefit people and the planet. It challenges everyone
to help create a healthier world by making changes in their daily routine.
“We wanted to plan an actiontargeted campaign that will give people a chance to act
on their concern for the environment in a positive way,” said Goldberg.
The campaign has identified four daily actions that can add up to huge environmental
savings. They include pledging (保证) to turn off the TV, give up the use of poisonous
cleaners, reduce consumption of consumer products and cut out meat.
At the end of April, all of the pledges will be recorded and converted (转化) into
the number of TV hours not watched, dollars not spent on unnecessary items, electricity
saved, greenhouse gas emissions (排放) avoided by cutting out meat, and poisonous chemicals produced from homes and landfills.
“What we're trying to achieve this year for Earth Day is to give people a chance to do something that is meaningful and measurable,” said Goldberg.

2.The underlined word “launching pad” (in Paragraph 3) probably means “________”.A.starting point B.finishing line
C.exchanging stage D.reforming stage
画线词所在句意为:地球日是一个引发人们开始对人类日常活动对环境所造成的阻碍进行摸索的起点,由此结合上文“... they want to find ways to reduce their environmental influence, not just celebrate one special event.”和下文中“can lead to thinking about...”
3.We can conclude from the passage that ________.
A.Earth Day was first celebrated over half a century ago
B.short term decisions will by no means influence our lives
C.Earth Day Canada is actually an everyday environmental action
D.daily actions must be measured to benefit the environment

The world is filled with smart, talented, educated and gifted people. We meet them every day.A few days ago,my car was not running well.I pulled it into a garage and the young mechanic had it fixed in just a few minutes. He knew what was wrong by simply listening to the engine.I was amazed. The sad truth is,great talent is not enough.
I am constantly shocked at how little talented people earn.I heard the other day that less than 5 percent of Americans earn more than $100,000 a year.A business consultant who specializes in the medical trade was telling me how many doctors and dentists struggle financially. It was this business consultant who gave me the phrase,“They are one skill away from great wealth.”
There is an old saying that goes,“Job means ‘just over broke(破产)’”.And unfortunately,I would say that the saying applies to millions of people.Because school does not think financial intelligence is intelligence, most workers “live within their means”.They work and they pay the bills.Instead I recommend to young people to seek work for what they will learn, more than what they will earn.
When I ask the classes I teach,“How many of you can cook a better hamburger than McDonald’s?” almost all the students raise their hands.I then ask,“So if most of you can cook a better hamburger, how come McDo nald’s makes more money than you?”The answer is obvious:McDonald’s is excellent at business systems. The reason that so many talented people are poor is because they focus on building a better hamburger and know little or nothing about business systems. The world is filled with talented poor people. They focus on perfecting their skills at building a better hamburger rather than the skills of selling and delivering the hamburger.
1.The author mentions the mechanic in the first paragraph to show that .
A.he has a sharp sense of hearing
B.he is ready to help others
C.he is just one of the talented people
D.he knows little about car repairing
2.The underlined part in the third paragraph can be best replaced by “”.
A.spend more than they can afford
B.do in their own way
C.live in their own circle
D.live within what they earn
3.Why do talented people earn so little according to the author?
A.They lack financial intelligence.
B.They don’t work hard enough.
C.They don’t make full use of their talents.
D.They have no specialized skills.
4.The main purpose of the author is to tell us .
A.how young people can find a satisfactory job
B.what schools should teach students
C.how McDonald’s makes so much money
D.why so many talented people are poor
依照文章前两句“The world is filled with smart, talented, educated and gifted people. We meet them every day.”
依照文章第三段第一句话“工作意味着仅比破产高一点”以及此段中的“They work and they pay the bills.”
依照文章最后一段中的“The reason that so many talented people are poor is because they focus on building a better hamburger and know little or nothing about business systems.”

Once when I was facing a decision that involved high risk, I went to a friend. He looked at me for a moment, and then wrote a sentence containing the best advice I've ever had:Be bold and brave—and mighty(强大的) forces will come to your aid.
Those words made me see clearly that when I had fallen short in the past,it was seldom because I had tried and failed. It was usually because I had let fear of failure stop me from trying at all.On the other hand, whenever I had plunged into deep water, forced by courage or circumstance,I had always been able to swim until I got my feet on the ground again.
Boldness means a decision to bite_off_more_than_you_are_sure
__you_can_eat. And there is nothing mysterious about the mighty forces. They are potential powers we possess: energy, skill, sound judgment, creative ideas—even physical strength greater than most of us realize.
Admittedly, those mighty forces are spiritual ones. But they are more important than physical ones.A college classmate of mine,Tim,was an excellent football player, even though he weighed much less than the average player.“In one game I suddenly found myself confronting a huge player, who had nothing but me between him and our goal line,”said Tim.“I was so frightened that I closed my eyes a nd desperately threw myself at that guy like a bullet (子弹)—and stopped him cold.”
Boldness—a willingness to extend yourself to the extreme—is not one that can be acquired overnight. But it can be taught to children and developed in
adults.Confidence builds up.Surely, there will be setbacks(挫折)and disappointments in life;boldness in itself is no guarantee of success. But the person who tries to do something and fails is a lot better off than the person who tries to do nothing and succeeds.
So,always try to live a little bit beyond your abilities—and you'll find your abilities are greater than you ever dreamed.
1.Why was the author sometimes unable to reach his goal in the past?
A.He faced huge risks.
B.He lacked mighty forces.
C.Fear prevented him from trying.
D.Failure blocked his way to success.
2.What is the implied meaning of the underlined part?
A.Swallow more than you can digest.
B.Act slightly above your abilities.
C.Develop more mysterious powers.
D.Learn to make creative decisions.
3.What can be learned from Paragraph 5?
A.Confidence grows more rapidly in adults.
B.Trying without success is meaningless.
C.Repeated failure creates a better life.
D.Boldness can be gained little by little.
4.What is the author's purpose in writing this passage?
A.To encourage people to be courageous.
B.To advise people to build up physical power.
C.To tell people the ways to guarantee success.
D.To recommend people to develop more abilities.
