16、In the eyes of many foreig ners, Chinese are the best hosts and the worst guests in the world. They’re not really bad guests, but because the guest-host relationship in China is much different than in some western counties, it appears they are not nice guests. And western guests sometimes look rude (粗鲁的) in the eyes of Chinese guests.
In China, guests are almost like gods. Whenever I enter a Chinese person’s home, there is always fruit on the table for me, a nd someone is quick to bring me a cup of tea or water. In the west, generally the guest is not a god. Acting according to the host’s way of doing things is usual behavior for a guest.
My wife’s mother, a very kind elderly Chinese lady, doesn’t smoke. When I see some of her guests smoking in her house, as a non-smoker, I feel unhappy. Usually I want to stop them directly, but I must realize that in China, to be a good host, she must not do that. In most North America homes, if you are a guest, and the hosts are not smokers, you should not smoke in their house. At the very least, you could ask, “Is it OK if I smoke?” “But, don’t be surprised if they say, “No, you can’t smoke.” In our culture, if you smoke in their home, you are a bad guest, but if they don’t allow you to smoke in their house, they are n ot a rude guest.
Guests in China also have special habits. Some western people may not adapt to these habits very soon. Thankfully my wife is Chinese, so whenever we visit a Chinese family she tells me to buy them a gift. However, giving a gift to a host is not always necessary in my country. So, if you invite international guests to your home, don’t be too surprised if they don’t bring you a gift.
In China, you probably won't need to change the guest-host relationship very much because you will probably only be the host, and Chinese are naturally very good hosts. If western hosts invite you to their house, try not to be too surprised if their style of treating you is not what you have expected.
1.Many foreigners think that Chinese hosts are the _________in the world.
A.best B.worst C.most natural D.most difficult
2.If the writer’s guests want to smoke in his house, what will he probably say?
A.It’s OK if you smoke here.B.Let’s smoke together.
C.Sorry, you can’t smoke here.D.Smoking is a bad habit.
3.What is the m eaning of the underlined phrase “adapt to” in the passage?
A.think back to B.get used to C.look forward to D.keep close to
4.What is the main idea of this passage?
A.Foreigners should learn from Chinese.
B.Hosts must do things in the guest’s way.
C.Western hosts are always nice to guests.
D.People should understand cultural differences.

17、Libraries give kids a quiet and safe place to read and learn. For over 100 years, libraries have played an important role in Americans’ education. But how are these boo k-filled buildings changing with the times? You may be surprised to find out. Benjamin Franklin famously founded (创建) America’s first lending library in 1731. But the public library system got its biggest development in the American history in the late 1800’s. Businessman Andrew Carnegie donated millions of dollars to help build free public libraries across the country. Between 1886 and 1919, Carnegie’s donations helped build 1,679 new libraries.

18、A study of sleep in sparrows suggests the relationship between sleep and the ability to learn may be more complicated (复杂) than realized.
Niels C.Rattenborg of the University of Wisconsin—Madison wanted to find out how the sparrows were able to deal with getting so much less sleep. He and his team brought eight wild birds into a lab and watched them for one year. They invented a game to check how well the birds could learn. In the game, the sparrows had to peck (啄) three buttons (按钮) in a certain order to get a food treat. The scientists discovered that the birds' ability to learn the right button order depended on (依靠) two things, the time of year and the
amount of sleep the birds had had.
During the migration (迁徙) season, the sparrows were restless at night and got much less sleep than usual.Even so, they were able to understand how to get the food quickly as if they'd had a regular night of sleep.Outside the migration season, they found the sparrows that got less sleep than usual had much more difficulty learning how to get the food treats than birds that had a regular sleep.
The results show that the sparrows can deal with much less sleep during the migration season than usual. If scientists can find out why, they may learn from sparrows and find ways of helping people deal with getting much less sleep.Until scientists fully understand the relationship between sleep and learning, it's better to get plenty of sleep when preparing for an exam.
1.Why can sparrows deal with much less sleep during the migration season?
A.They eat more.
B.The climate is better.
C.They find enough food.
D.Scientists still don't know it.
2.What can we infer from the passage?
A.When tired, you should try to focus (聚焦) on your study.
B.You should get enough sleep before an exam.
C.You should migrate like sparrows.
D.You should sleep less at night.
3.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.Sleep lessons from sparrows
B.How to get good exam results
C.How sparrows get a food treat
D.Sparrows' migration

19、Hello, everybody. I am planning a summer trip called “Be a kid in the Mountains”. It will provide us with a meaningful week staying with the students in the mountains.
As many of their parents leave for the city to work, those students might feel lonely and some may even find it hard to go on studying. So we can bring them some school things like books and pens for their study, and prepare some interesting stories to share. In the daytime, we can go hiking and do some teamwork. In the evening, we can do such activities as popular games
and group dance around the fire.
Isn’t that exciting? Come and join us. Let’s be “a kid in the mountains”. I believe it will bring sunshine to the children in the mountains as well as more confidence to us.
Thank you!。
