Number Sense and Operations MA.K.NSO.1.1: Given a group of up to 20 objects, count the number of objects in that group and represent the number of objects with a written numeral. State the number of objects in a rearrangement of that group without recounting.
FOCUS on Major Work
Students count 15 objects in a group and represent the number of objects with the matching numeral.
RIGOR in the Lesson
• Conceptual Understanding Students model counting 15 objects using linking cubes.
? “How many more counters do you need to make 14?” Have a volunteer place 4 counters in the empty ten frame. Choral count to 14.
• Place one more counter. Point to each counter as students count, allowing voices to get slightly louder as they approach 15.
• “I need a helper. [Name], will you put ten counters in one of the ten frames?” Pause while the ten frame is filled. “Now, use your fingers to count to ten.” Choral count to 10 as each finger is raised.

Math Overview
In this lesson, students count groups of 15 objects and are introduced to writing 15. Five and ten are benchmark numbers and students should recognize models of each number in a ten frame. These models are placed together and referred to as a double ten frame. Like previously learned teen numbers, students need to write two digits to represent 15.
• Students bring their booklet from the circle to their seat.
